The effect of rearing temperature on the growth and maturation of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) was investigated. Arctic charr juveniles were reared for 6 months (phase I, October–April, size range 20–500 g) at constant temperatures of 9, 12 and 15 °C and according to two temperature‐step groups (Tstep) i.e. fish transferred from 15 to 12 °C or from 12 to 9 °C. All the previous treatments were then reared either at 7 °C or at 12 °C for an additional 4 months (phase II, size range 300–1000 g) and then slaughtered in August 2008. The overall growth rate was the highest at a constant temperature of 15 °C for the first 6 months of the trial, with the fish in this group being 44% and 78% heavier than the fish reared at a constant temperature of 12 or 9 °C respectively. Arctic charr showed a negative response in terms of the growth rate when transferred from higher to lower temperatures, especially for groups previously reared at 15 °C. There was a trend for higher gonadosomatic index values at the end of the experiment for groups of fish that were exposed to higher rearing temperatures during the juvenile phase i.e. 4.18% (±0.79) and 7.29% (±0.89), for the temperature groups of 12 and 15 °C, respectively, compared with 2.49% (±0.74) for the 9 °C group. Our results suggest that for the production of fish >1000 g, moderate or low temperatures (here 9 °C) should be applied during the juvenile phase in order to reduce the negative effects arising from maturation. Farmers with access to heat sources should accordingly choose more moderate rearing temperatures during the juvenile stage, especially if the fish is to be moved down in the temperature regime during the on‐growing period.  相似文献

Migration success of hatchery-reared and wild sea trout smolts through the lower stretches and the estuary of a Baltic Sea river were studied. During 3 years, wild and hatchery trout smolts were implanted with acoustic transmitters and released 14 km upstream from the river mouth. In order to monitor their out-migration pattern, acoustic receivers were deployed along the migratory route. Data on number of fish detected and date and time of detections were analysed and the migratory performance of wild and hatchery-reared fish was compared. A significantly higher proportion of wild fish (80%) successfully migrated to the coast compared to fish of hatchery origin (27.5%) and migration was faster in wild smolts. Hatchery fish were larger and had a higher condition factor and lipid concentrations, which are proposed as possible reasons for the poorer migratory performance of the hatchery-reared fish.  相似文献

Female summer flounder grow considerably faster than males, and rearing temperature has been shown to influence sex differentiation in related species. The present studies were conducted to examine sex differentiation of post‐metamorphic juveniles reared at temperatures conducive for commercial production. In experiments 1 and 2, offspring produced from crosses with meiogynogenetic, sex‐reversed males and normal females were raised at 14, 16 or 18°C for ≥300 days or 12°C for 30, 60 or 120 days and then transferred to a male‐determining temperature (21°C). In all cases, the fish developed predominantly as phenotypic males (≥74%). In a third experiment, offspring produced from crosses with normal males and females were reared at 15, 17 and 19°C for 111, 227 and 278 days and then transferred to 21°C. Most fish (≥92.1%) developed as phenotypic males irrespective of rearing temperature or length of exposure. Several hypotheses are proposed for these findings and further research is necessary to understand the sex‐determining mechanisms in this species before the economic advantages associated with sexually dimorphic growth can be realized.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Fast skeletal muscles of Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus and red sea bream Pagrus major were examined for quantitative and qualitative changes of mitochondrial ATP synthase (FoF1-ATPase) in association with rearing temperatures. The specific activities of FoF1-ATPase from Japanese flounder reared at 10°C, 15°C and 25°C for 4 weeks were determined to be 81 ± 11, 74 ± 13 and 83 ± 11 nmol/min·mg mitochondrial protein, respectively. The corresponding activity from red sea bream reared at 8°C for 5 weeks was determined to be 65 ± 9 nmol/min·mg mitochondrial protein, which was higher than 33 ± 9 nmol/min·mg mitochondrial protein in fish reared at 23°C. The contents of α- and β-F1-ATPase in total mitochondrial proteins were not significantly different between fish reared at different temperatures for the two fish species. However, the contents of β-F1-ATPase in the total fast skeletal muscle extracts, prepared from Japanese flounder reared at 10°C, were 2.1- and 2.9-fold higher than those for fish reared at 15°C and 25°C, respectively. The corresponding content from red seabream reared at 8°C was 2.2-fold higher than that for fish reared at 23°C. Therefore, the changes in FoF1-ATPase depending on rearing temperatures were species-specific.  相似文献

The effect of nocturnal and diurnal releases on survival and migration of wild and hatchery‐reared Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, L., smolts (n = 82) was investigated by releasing acoustically tagged smolts at the lower end of the River Vosso, Norway. Hatchery smolts was registered in the estuary within hours of their release, whereas wild smolts migrated over a prolonged period. The time of estuary exit was affected by river discharge but not by time of release. Progression rates were slow through the estuary (0.25 BL/s ± 0.18 SD) and fast through the fjord (1.80 BL/s ± 0.69 SD), and they were not affected by the time of release or origin. Survival to the fjord was low (0%–15%). Survival was not affected by body length but was lower for wild smolts than for hatchery smolts, and survival of the former was lower when the fish were released in daylight.  相似文献

The River Dalälven Baltic salmon, Salmo salar L., population has been maintained by stocking reared fish since the early 1920s. Initially, all rearing was carried out at one hatchery, but since the late 1980s two have been used. Both hatcheries are situated 9–10 km from the river mouth but some 600 m apart. All broodfish were caught in a single fish trap situated some 700 m upstream of the upper hatchery. The salmon smolts were released just below the water outlets of each hatchery, respectively. About 2% of the released smolts from each hatchery were tagged annually with Carlin tags. Total recapture rates were higher for smolts from the lower hatchery. A higher proportion of recaptured fish was reported from the home river for salmon from the upper hatchery. The migration within the river to the fish trap was more precise for fish from the upper station. Strays were very late in the season and of a higher number from the lower hatchery. Observations of jumping salmon by the outlet from the lower station indicated that salmon returned to that point. The lower recaptures in the trap were considered a result of a shorter river migration of salmon from the lower hatchery.  相似文献

Abstract– The diet composition, movcments and growth of Atlantic salmon parr rearing in the estuary of Western Arm Brook, Newfoundland were compared with those of parr from riverine habitats over 2 years. Estuarine parr consumed a variety of prey, including many freshwater taxa (mainly insects), which indicated a dependence on freshwater drift from the river. Prey of estuarine origin (amphipods and sticklebacks) were increasingly consumed between spring and autumn. Prey volume per fish and number of prey per fish increased significantly for estuarine parr between spring and autumn, suggesting an improvement in food availability. Riverine parr, however, realized a general decrease in both parameters between spring and autumn. The recapture of 16% ( n = 131) of the 829 parr marked in the estuary in 1987 and 1988 indicated a directed movement toward the head of the estuary and river mouth, as also suggested by the diet analysis. Parr from outer estuary sites were very mobile compared with parr from the estuary site closest to the river mouth, which behaved more like parr in the river proper in displaying strong site fidelity. Movement patterns of parr were primarily along the shoreline. Individual growth rates were highly variable in both environments but especially in the estuary. The mean growth of estuarine parr was 0.23 mm. d−1 between May and October with some evidence of fastest growth having occurred in late spring and early summer (approx. 0.4 mm. d−1); mean growth rate of riverine parr was slower, at 0.12 mm. d−1. The results are discussed in the context that estuarine rearing by salmon parr represents an alternative life-history tactic for the species in river systems in eastern Canada.  相似文献

Reared salmon smolts have been released into the Burrishoole river system since 1957. From 1970 it has been possible to record all adult returns. Survival of reared smolts to adult, as measured by numbers of fish returning to fresh water, has averaged 2.1% cf. 8.4% for wild smolts. A number of factors contributing to the comparatively poor returns of reared smolts are outlined. The behaviour of reared adults on return to fresh water is described and it is concluded that once past their homing point, their contribution to the rod and line fishery diminishes. Thus, the exploitation rate of reared grilse below their homing point (L. Furnace) exceeds that above (L. Feeagh). In confirmation, whilst a positive correlation exists between total stock and total catch of reared grilse on L. Furnace, no significant correlation exists between stock and catch on L. Feeagh. In the Burrishoole system, the exploitation rate of wild grilse usually exceeds that of reared and it is only in L. Furnace that reared grilse make a significant contribution to the total rod catch. The mean exploitation rate obtained for Burrishoole reared grilse is low (10.8%) when compared with those recorded for salmon in other systems. The comparable exploitation rate of Burrishoole wild grilse is 14.3%.  相似文献

The timing of smolt migration is a key phenological trait with profound implications for individual survival during both river descent and the subsequent sea sojourn of anadromous fish. We studied relationships between the time of smolt migration, water temperature and light intensity for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (Salmo trutta). During 2006–2012, migrating smolts descending the southern Norway River Storelva were caught in a rotary screw trap located at the river mouth. The date of 50% cumulative smolt descent correlated significantly with the date when the river temperature exceeded 8°C for both Atlantic salmon and sea trout smolts. In 2010, smolts of both species were passive integrated transponder (PIT)‐tagged, and the diel timing of their migration was precisely documented. The degree of night migration decreased in both species as the river temperature rose, and at temperatures above 12–13°C, more smolts migrated during day than during night. A multinomial model was fitted for estimating temperature and species effects on probabilities of migration during night, daytime, dusk and dawn. Atlantic salmon smolts preferred migrating under lower light intensities than sea trout smolts during early, but not late spring when both species migrated during bright daylight. In accordance with the early‐season tendency to migrate at night, Atlantic salmon smolts migrated more during darker hours of the day than sea trout. In both species, smaller smolts migrated under dark conditions than during light conditions. Most of the findings on thermal, light and temporal effects on the observed smolt migration pattern can be explained as adaptations to predation avoidance.  相似文献

To characterize thermal-responsive genes in fish, firstly, juvenile rainbow trout were reared in four different temperature conditions (average temperatures were 10, 14, 18, and 22 °C, respectively) and differentially expressed genes were identified. Gene expression in the liver was analyzed by the differential display method, followed by validation using real-time PCR. Subsequently, to examine whether the identified genes show heritable differences, the gene expression levels were compared among juveniles of three genetically distinct lines of rainbow trout (a strain and two closed colonies) by rearing at two different temperature conditions (average 14 and 22 °C). By rearing at 22 °C, growth retardation was observed compared with fish reared at 14 and 18 °C, and six genes were identified as differentially expressed genes in response to the rearing temperature in the gene expression analyses. With the increase in rearing temperature, gene expressions of a complement C1q and two ribosomal proteins were significantly up-regulated. On the other hand, three metabolic genes (betaine homocysteine methyltransferase, triosephosphate isomerase, and glucose-6-phosphatase) were down-regulated, indicating a metabolic depression due to high temperature. In the subsequent analyses, in response to the rearing temperature (14 and 22 °C), there was a trend that the complement C1q and glucose-6-phosphatase genes showed different expression patterns among the three rainbow trout lines, suggesting heritable differences in these genes. Our study provides information on thermal-responsive genes in fish, and we anticipate it will facilitate further investigation in the thermal biology of fish.  相似文献

Two-summer-old Baltic salmon (Salmo salar) from three different stocks in northern Sweden held at Heden, Norrfors and Bergeforsen hatcheries were subjected to five successive seawater challenge tests each from 2 May until 5 July 1983. A pronounced seasonal pattern of plasma sodium levels was observed in sexually immature fish at Norrfors but not at the other two hatcheries. Response surface analysis of sodium data from the Norrfors fish predicted minimum plasma sodium concentration (i.e., maximum seawater adaptation) for transfer of 14.8-cm fish to sea water on 4 June. Precocious male parr at Norrfors had significantly higher plasma sodium concentrations after seawater challenge than did sexually immature fish in all tests. At the time of the fifth seawater challenge test in early July, a number of males at Bergeforsen and Norrfors were becoming sexually mature again and they suffered heavy mortality in sea water. The inhibitory effect of low temperature on testis regression in precocious male parr and its effect on their ability to smoltify is described. It is suggested that the seasonal variation in ambient water temperature near the time of the smolt-run might affect the proportion of precocious males which migrate from northern rivers. We view the seasonal pattern of seawater adaptability in juvenile Baltic salmon as an indicator of the endogenous annual timing system involved in the control of smolting and conclude that it can assist in deciding when to release Baltic salmon smolts from hatcheries.  相似文献

In order to successfully diversify Mediterranean aquaculture, it is necessary to determine optimum culture conditions of potential candidate species such as greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili). Among culture conditions, rearing temperature is a key factor for achieving optimum growth and maintaining fish welfare. However, little is known about the optimum culture conditions of greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili). Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of three different rearing temperatures (17, 22 and 26°C) during 120 days on growth performance, body morphometry, biochemical composition, gut transit and liver morphology of greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) juveniles. After 120 days of rearing, fish raised at 26°C showed higher (p < .05) body weight and specific growth rate than fish held at lower temperatures, as well as improved feed utilization, protein efficiency and nutrient retention percentages. Fish stomach emptying was faster (p < .05) in fish raised at 26°C than in fish held at 22°C and 17°C. Similar results were obtained for gut transit time, being gut emptying faster (p < .05) in fish reared at 26°C than in fish cultured at lower temperatures. Rearing temperature also induced changes in fish morphology which resulted in a higher (p < .05) caudal propulsion efficiency index for fish reared at 26°C. Based on these results, we conclude that greater amberjack fingerlings perform better at 26°C than at 22°C or 17°C.  相似文献

Effect of rearing salinity on the performance of juvenile golden pompano Trachinotus ovatus (Linnaeus 1758) was studied under a laboratory condition. Fish growth, survival, RNA/DNA ratio, pepsin activity, α‐amylase activity and FCR were used as evaluation criteria. The growth and RNA/DNA ratio were significantly affected by the rearing salinity. High growth rate and RNA/DNA ratio were observed when fish were reared at the salinity of 34‰. The pepsin activity of fish was not significantly affected by the rearing salinity. However, the α‐amylase activity of fish was significantly affected by the rearing salinity. The α‐amylase activity of fish reared at the salinity of 10‰ was significantly lower than fish cultured at the salinity of 34‰. Rearing salinity can significantly affect the FCR of juvenile golden pompano. The FCR of fish cultured at the salinity of 10‰ was 5‐times higher than the FCR of fish reared at 34‰. Results from the present study indicate that juvenile golden pompano can be reared above 26‰ without affecting fish performance, and the salinity of 10‰ may be too low to rear juvenile golden pompano as fish growth, RNA/DNA ratio and α‐amylase activity were reduced.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted in flow‐through tanks at 24, 27 and 30 C to evaluate growth, food conversion, morbidity, survival, and the cortisol stress response of surubim Pseudoplatystoma sp. at different temperatures. In Experiment 1, fish (mean initial weight, 33.3 ± 7.2 g) reared at 27 and 30 C for 60 d grew significantly faster than fish reared at 24 C (P < 0.05). Fish at the lowest temperature showed the poorest feed conversion ratio (FCR, 5:1), while fish at 27 and 30 C had FCRs of 2.5:1 and 3.5:1, respectively. Mortality and morbidity rates were inversely proportional to the temperatures tested. In Experiment 2, serum cortisol levels following an acute handling stressor peaked at 30 min after stress, returned to near‐resting levels at 1 h after stress, and completely returned to resting levels at 3 h after stress in fish at all temperatures tested. Peak serum cortisol levels were higher in fish at 30 C (321.1 ± 38.8 ng/mL) than those in fish at 27 and 24 C (143.3 ± 37.4 ng/mL and 104.2 ± 37.2 ng/mL, respectively). In Experiment 3, fish (mean initial weight, 67 ± 8.58 g) reared at 27 C for 137 d grew significantly faster than fish at 30 and 24 C. Virtually, all fish reared in 30 C had some sign of morbidity (skin lesions and fin abrasion) compared to only a small percentage of fish in the other two temperatures. Again, the highest cortisol peak level was measured in fish reared at 30 C (117.6 ± 16.7 ng/mL), as compared to fish at 24 and 27 C (99.2 ± 15.5 ng/mL and 80.2 ± 12.8 ng/mL, respectively). Our findings indicate that the optimum temperature for rearing surubim in tanks is 27 C. At 30 C, these fish may suffer from stress, as suggested by the elevated peak of cortisol and morbidity and mortality rates. The relatively rapid cortisol stress response of surubim suggests that they may be more tolerant to handling stressors than other fish species.

Experiments were conducted to control reproduction of Tilapia nilotica using cage culture compared with growth and reproduction in ponds. Three rearing densities (5, 15, and 45 fish per cage), and three kinds of aquatic plant (Hydrilla sp., Lemna sp., and Chara sp.) were used as feed. Results of the study showed that Tilapia reproduced in both cages and ponds; however, the intensity of reproduction was low. Growth rates of fish reared in cages were higher than those of fish reared in ponds.Lemna sp. as feed gave the best results in terms of growth rate and protein content of fish flesh. There was no interaction between feed and rearing density.  相似文献

The sex ratios of the nigorobuna Carassius auratus grandoculis reared in paddy fields during the sex differentiation periods of larval and juvenile stages were examined, since the phenotypic expression of sex in the fish is thermolabile, so that sex determination is under the control of genetic factors and temperature. After 2 days from hatching, the larvae were introduced into five paddy fields at five different densities in late May. After 37 or 41 days from hatching the juveniles were collected when the water was drained from the paddy fields, and reared in laboratory tanks supplied with running freshwater pumped from the lake shore until the age of 144–164 days. The mean water temperatures in the paddy fields were 22.4–24.1 ºC, and the maximum water temperature during the day frequently exceeded 30 ºC during the supposed critical period of sex determination of the fish. The sex ratios in the five paddy fields did not show a male-bias. Instead, all fields produced either balanced or slightly female-bias sex ratios. These results suggest that temporary high and fluctuating temperatures in paddy fields with low mean temperatures have hardly any masculinization effects on genotypic females of C. auratus grandoculis during sex differentiation stages.  相似文献

Abstract –  We compared timing of smolt migration for two populations of naturally spawned Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar , originating from an upper catchment (River Tummel) and a lower catchment (River Almond) tributary of the River Tay, Scotland. Smolts from the upper tributary began migration earlier than those from the lower tributary. On both occasions when fry derived from River Isla (lower tributary) stock were transferred to a location in the upper catchment, smolt migration was later than for native fish. Similarly, when fry from Tummel and Isla stocks were stocked in a common, upper catchment location, Isla origin fish migrated at a later date, in both of the two following smolt years. These differences are indicative of a genetic basis for the timing of smolt migration and suggestive of local adaptation. Mounting evidence points towards local genetic adaptation for the timing of expression of behaviours associated with migration. These aspects of variation should be accommodated in management theory and practices.  相似文献

Hydropower development has negatively influenced Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) populations. Compensatory hatchery‐rearing programmes exist, but released fish suffer from high mortality that may be related to the lack of experience from natural environments in hatchery‐reared smolts and their large body size and high energetic state. Here, we used acoustic telemetry to test how body size, energetic state, and the environmental conditions of the river affect migration in hatchery‐reared smolts. The study was conducted in three consecutive years between 2011 and 2013 in the lower part of the River Umeälven, Sweden. For individual fish, there was no effect of body size but the energetic state of the fish had a negative effect on sea entry. The most important factor affecting sea entry rate was the water discharge in the old river bed that differed among years. Smolts were more likely to enter the sea in years when the discharge was high or when the discharge increased substantially shortly after release. Hatchery‐reared fish had higher migration speed at a slower flowing section compared with a faster flowing section, which was likely a result of large hesitation to enter the rapid section. The increase in water discharge led to an increase in fish migration speed disproportional to the increase in water velocity. Our results highlight the importance of water discharge for the smolts during smolt migration, and we argue that concern should be given to migrating fish when managing regulated rivers.  相似文献

The effect of origin, smolt size and year of release on the sea migration pattern of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in the Baltic Sea was examined by tagging experiments conducted in 1991–1993 on wild and reared smolts of the Simojoki river salmon stock. The tag recovery data analysed by log-linear models revealed significant differences in both spatial and temporal sea migrations between the wild and reared salmon; the variation was attributed to the year of release and to the origin of the fish. Grilse accounted for the majority of reared returners (76%) but for a smaller proportion (46%) of the wild fish. The effect of smolt size could be studied only in the smolt groups tagged in 1991. Wild fish were more frequently (71%) caught in the Baltic Main Basin than were reared fish (51%) during their second sea year, and the size variation between wild and reared smolts did not explain the recovery site. No such differences in spatial distribution were found during the third sea year. The tagging place (hatchery/trap) of the reared fish did not affect their later sea migration. The differences in sea migration patterns suggest that the wild salmon are more vulnerable to the intensive salmon fishery in the Baltic Main Basin than are reared fish.  相似文献
