A 4-year-old, male castrated European shorthair cat was presented with a firm mass palpable on the right caudal rib cage. Lateral and ventrodorsal radiographs of the thorax revealed a 4x3x2cm large, expansile and radiodense mass originating from the distal part of the 13th rib. After removal of the tumour, which was histopathologically confirmed as feline osteochondromatosis, the diaphragm, omentum, external abdominal oblique and latissimus dorsi muscles were used to reconstruct the defect. Feline osteochondromatosis is induced by retroviruses, eg, feline leukaemia virus, for which the cat tested positive. The tumour was removed for palliative reasons, because such tumours have the tendency to transform into osteosarcomas. Six months after the surgical excision the cat showed no clinical signs of reoccurrence.  相似文献

Objective— To report diagnosis and treatment of bilateral iliopsoas muscle contracture in a dog with spinous process impingement. Study design— Case report. Animals— German Shepherd dog. Methods— A dog with chronic progressive lameness, flexion contracture of the coxofemoral joints, severe pain, and decreased femoral reflexes had severe spondylosis bridging the vertebral bodies from L1 to L4 and enlarged dorsal spinous processes from T8 to L6 with impingement and bony proliferation. Ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings were consistent with fibrosis, mineralization, and atrophy of the iliopsoas muscles bilaterally which was treated by staged tenectomy of the insertions of the iliopsoas muscles. Results— Because of severe perivascular fibrosis, the femoral vessels required ligation. Bilateral iliopsoas muscle tenectomy improved gait and provided pain relief. Histologic findings were consistent with fibrotic myopathy. Conclusions— Slow progression of severe clinical signs observed bilaterally in this dog differs from previous reports of iliopsoas myopathy. Findings were similar to the fibrotic myopathy of the gracilis or semitendinosus muscles described in dogs. Clinical Relevance— Iliopsoas muscle abnormalities should be considered in dogs with limited hip extension and pain. MRI is useful for diagnosing muscle fibrosis. Iliopsoas tenectomy may improve clinical function in dogs with fibrotic myopathy.  相似文献

A number of idiopathic degenerative diseases affecting the central nervous system, peripheral nerves and muscles of immature and young adult rottweilers are reported. Tetraparesis or ataxia causing abnormalities in gait and posture are clinical findings common to these conditions. The current knowledge about these syndromes is presented in this review, with an emphasis on the clinical characteristics. Knowledge of these syndromes and a methodical approach to neurological diagnosis can help the veterinarian to identify the underlying disease and establish a prognosis when presented with a tetraparetic or ataxic young rottweiler.  相似文献

An 11-year-old castrated male domestic medium hair cat was presented with neurological signs consistent with a right thalamocortical lesion. Computed tomography (CT) images revealed a heterogeneously, hyperattenuating, poorly contrast enhancing intra-axial mass within the right lateral ventricle. The histological diagnosis at post-mortem examination was vascular hamartoma with hemorrhage and necrosis. This is the first report of a vascular hamartoma affecting the thalamocortex in a geriatric cat. Also, this is the first time that CT images of a feline cerebral vascular hamartoma have been reported.  相似文献

Disorders affecting the control of saccadic eye movements result in involuntary saccadic oscillations and are widely reported in human medicine. Information regarding the occurrence and potential importance of saccadic oscillations in veterinary medicine is currently limited. The clinical histories of three dogs and one cat displaying involuntary eye movements consistent with opsoclonus are presented, with final diagnoses including idiopathic generalized tremor syndrome and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL). A dog with eye movements closely resembling macrosaccadic oscillations is also presented, for which a final diagnosis of NCL was made. All animals had clinical signs of cerebellar disease. As in human medicine, recognition of these forms of involuntary eye movement might suggest a cerebellar neuroanatomic localization. Opsoclonus and macrosaccadic oscillations are forms of involuntary saccadic eye movement that are both unrecognized and under‐reported in veterinary medicine.  相似文献

An 8-month-old, male domestic shorthaired cat presented for chronic weight loss, intermittent dyspnea, chronic diarrhea, hyperactivity, and weakness. The cat had a palpable thyroid nodule and increased serum total thyroxine and 3,5,3' triiodothyronine levels. The cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, and a unilateral thyroidectomy was performed followed by radioactive iodine at a later date. The clinical signs resolved following radioactive iodine, and the cat subsequently developed clinical hypothyroidism.  相似文献

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP)-like condition was diagnosed in a Japanese domestic cat with stiffness, marked atrophy of the muscles, and limited mobility of all joints in both the pelvic limbs. Etretinate, a retinoid, was used for medical management; however, no improvement in the clinical signs was observed. Inheritance of the disorder has not yet been demonstrated. Furthermore, the clinical signs and histopathological findings of feline FOP-like condition in the present case differed from those of the previously reported cases.  相似文献

A ten year old castrated male domestic short haired cat, was presented with clinical signs related to the cauda equina. The results of the neurological examination, diagnostic procedures, and clinical course are presented. At necropsy a glioblastoma of the caudal spinal cord was present. The difficulties in distinguishing between neoplasms arising in the cauda equina and the caudal spinal cord are discussed. A comparative discussion of the cauda equina syndrome is presented.  相似文献

Dysplasia of the tricuspid valve in 14 dogs and 13 cats was studied. The clinical, electrocardiographic, radiographic, hemodynamic, angiocardiographic, and pathologic findings were reviewed in each species. Alterations of the tricuspid valve complex included long, thick septal leaflets adhered to the septum; absent or short, stout fused chordae tendineae; hypertrophic fused papillary muscles; insertion of papillary muscles directly into the lateral leaflets; incomplete development of the valvular tissue; and enlargement of the right atrium and ventricle. Additional intracardiac anomalies included malformation of the mitral valve complex (5 dogs and 3 cats), ventricular septal defect (3 dogs and 3 cats), pulmonary stenosis (1 dog and 1 cat), aortic stenosis (1 dog and 1 cat), and persistent left cranial vena cava (1 dog).  相似文献

A 19-year-old, speyed, domestic short-hair cat was presented with an eyelid tumour of 3 months duration. Ophthalmic examination revealed a large, raised, ulcerated and bleeding mass affecting the left lower eyelid. The mass was 12 mm x 10 mm in size, extended to the medial canthus and had eroded 10 mm of eyelid margin. Mandibular lymph nodes were not palpably enlarged. A diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma was confirmed by histologic examination. Due to involvement of more than half the lower eyelid, it was decided that treatment with radioactive gold-198 seeds was appropriate. Nine radioactive gold-198 seeds were implanted, delivering a minimum tumour dose of 65 Gy. Three weeks postoperatively the mass had resolved, with only a small scab remaining. After a further 3 weeks, there was no evidence of the eyelid tumour. Although approximately 7 mm of eyelid margin was absent, this did not cause any clinical signs other than mild conjunctivitis. There was no evidence of the tumour 10 months postoperatively, when the cat was euthanased for unrelated disease.  相似文献

This paper describes a case of hypertrophic feline muscular dystrophy (HFMD) in the UK. The cat under investigation died unexpectedly following routine vaccination, and postmortem investigation revealed myopathy, particularly affecting the diaphragm as well as multiple skeletal muscles. The right lung lobes were also partially collapsed and this was considered secondary to the effect of the muscular dystrophy. Pathological and immunohistochemical findings are described, macroscopic and microscopic findings are compared with other recorded cases in the literature and a diagnostic overview of HFMD is given. Possible causes of death are also discussed and a novel immunohistochemical method of demonstrating dystrophin deficiency using formalin-fixed tissue is described.  相似文献

A 7-year-old, entire female, domestic shorthair cat presented with recurrent upper respiratory tract problems. Infectious otitis media caused expansion of the middle ear which ultimately resulted in complete obstruction of the nasopharynx. A ventral bulla osteotomy was successful in relieving the clinical signs.  相似文献

A 7‐month‐old domestic medium hair cat presented with facial asymmetry affecting the bony and soft tissue structures of the right side of the head including the maxilla, nose, eye and pinna of the ear. Additionally, neurological dysfunction of the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves on the affected side was present. A congenital malformation affecting the first and second embryologic pharyngeal arches was suspected. This is the first case of hemifacial microsomia of likely congenital origin reported in a cat.  相似文献

A 2-year-old, castrated, male European Shorthair cat was presented with inappetence, vomiting, and fever. Ascites and an irregularly nodular liver were observed on laparotomy; in view of the poor prognosis, the animal was euthanatized. Histopathologic examination of the liver showed a chronic hepatitis with cirrhosis associated with massive accumulation of copper in hepatocytes and macrophages, particularly in the fibrotic areas between the regenerative nodules. Electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis revealed lysosomal accumulation of copper in the hepatocytes. Analytical determination showed very high copper concentrations in the liver. No evidence for increased dietary or environmental copper could be found. This and the pattern of hepatic copper storage, the associated inflammation and fibrosis, strongly suggest a primary copper storage disorder.  相似文献

Fibrotic myopathy of the iliopsoas muscle developed in a dog, following extensive migration of a grass awn within the muscle and adjacent subcutaneous tissue. The dog was initially presented for evaluation of a fluctuant swelling over the right flank region. The clinical and imaging findings were suggestive of iliopsoas fibrotic myopathy and the diagnosis was confirmed by histopathology. This is the third report of iliopsoas fibrotic myopathy in a dog, the first report to describe the postmortem pathologic changes and the first report of iliopsoas fibrotic myopathy subsequent to foreign body migration.  相似文献

The incidence, distribution, and macro‐ and microscopic structures of left ventricular false tendons (LVFTs) in the cat heart were studied using 25 normal and 57 diseased hearts. The fibrous bands were observed in the left ventricle of all 82 cat hearts examined and most commonly extended between the papillary muscles and the ventricular septum. Histologically, the LVFTs were composed of central Purkinje fibres and surrounding dense collagenous fibres covered by endothelium. There was no appreciable difference in the incidence, distribution or morphology of LVFTs between the normal and the diseased hearts, indicating that LVFTs are a common anatomic variant in the cat heart.  相似文献

An 8-year-old FIV-positive Australian cat was presented with coughing, periocular alopecia, pyrexia and inappetence. Skin scrapings demonstrated Demodex cati mites. Antibiotics were administered and it was treated successfully for periocular demodectic mange, but the cat continued to exhibit respiratory signs and lose weight. Further investigation revealed an ascarid infection and active chronic inflammation of undetected cause affecting the lower airways. Repetitive treatment with pyrantel failed to eradicate the ascarid infection. The cat became cachectic and developed moist ulcerative dermatitis of the neck, severe non-regenerative anaemia, leucopenia and thrombocytopenia. Necropsy and histopathology revealed mycobacteriosis affecting skin, lungs, spleen, lymph nodes, liver and kidney. Attempted culture of frozen tissues at a mycobacteria reference laboratory was unsuccessful. Paraffin-embedded, formalin-fixed tissue was retrieved and examined using PCR to amplify part of the 16S rRNA gene. A diagnosis of disseminated Mycobacterium genavense infection was made based on the presence of acid fast bacteria in many tissues and partial sequence of the 16S rRNA gene. Although M genavense has been identified previously as a cause of disseminated disease in AIDS patients, this is the first report of infection in a cat. It was suspected that the demodecosis, recurrent ascarid infections and disseminated M genavense infection resulted from an immune deficiency syndrome consequent to longstanding FIV infection.  相似文献

In consideration of the sparcity of data regarding the anatomic organization of the innervation of the Rhomboideus, Serratus ventralis and Trapezius muscles in the general veterinary literature, a study of the innervation of these muscles was carried out. This work was done in the dog, the cat and the pig. Nerves supplying these muscles were studied through gross dissection, and described in regard to their origin, distribution and termination. The conclusions present a discussion of the relationship of muscle innervation to the ascending and descending branches of the ventral rami of spinal nerves. The pattern of innervation is discussed in relationship to the embryologic development and function of these muscles.  相似文献

The size, position and ease of demonstration of the major abdominal viscera have been recorded in a series of two hundred consecutive radiographic examinations of the dog and cat. Only the values for viscera either known to be normal following surgery or autopsy, or presumed to be normal on the basis of clinical findings, are presented. All values are expressed as a ratio of the length of the second lumbar vertebral body. The factors affecting organ visibility and the variations in normal organ size are discussed.  相似文献
