Leaf concentrations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) in ‘Sterling’ muscadine grapes (Vitis rotundifolia Michaux) grown for two years in sand culture were not influenced by different N‐fertilizer sources. Leaf zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) were higher with ammonium nitrate (NH 4NO 3)than ammonium sulfate [(NH 4) 2SO 4]. Shoot growth was greatest with NH 4NO 3. Leaf Ca, Mg, Mn, and Cu content decreased and leaf N increased as N‐fertilizer rates were raised. Plant growth was positively correlated with leaf N, but was negatively correlated with leaf Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Mn content. Percent Mg in the leaves was reduced when N levels, regardless of N source, were raised from the low (1.8 mM) to the middle (5.4 mM) rate. High leaf‐N levels were correlated with lower Ca and Mg in the leaves, indicating a relationship between N fertilization and the late‐season Mg deficiency often observed in muscadine grapes. 相似文献

’Shogoin’ turnip plants (Brassica rapa L.) were grown in sand culture under five nitrate:ammonium (NO 3:NH 4) ratios (N:N of 1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 0:1). The leaves expressed symptoms of NH 4 toxicity (reduced growth and curly leaves with dark‐green areas surrounding yellow spots) when NH 4 was the dominant nitrogen (N) form. Increasing NO 3 in the nutrient solution significantly (p<0.01) increased leaf and root fresh weight and dry weight. Leaf nutrient concentration and composition of all elements analyzed, except N and calcium (Ca), responded quadratically (p<0.01) to NO 3:NH 4 ratios, and the highest values were observed with the 1:0 [for molybdenum (Mo)], 3:1 ([or magnesium (Mg)], 1:1 [for boron (B), coper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn ), and zinc (Zn)] or 1:3 [for phosphorus (P) and potassium (K)] treatments. Nitrogen and Ca leaf concentration responses were linear and highest at 0:1 and at 1:0, respectively. Cultural practices and fertilizer applications should maintain NO 3 as the dominant N form in the root zone, and the continuous use of NH 4‐ based or NH4‐releasing fertilizers is not recommended for the production of high yields of turnip greens. 相似文献

Abstract Loss of soil‐water saturation may impair growth of rainfed lowland rice by restricting nutrient uptake, including the uptake of added phosphorus (P). For acidic soils, reappearance of soluble aluminum (Al) following loss of soil‐water saturation may also restrict P uptake. The aim of this study was to determine whether liming, flooding, and P additions could ameliorate the effects of loss of soil‐water saturation on P uptake and growth of rice. In the first pot experiment, two acid lowland soils from Cambodia [Kandic Plinthaqult (black clay soil) and Plinthustalf (sandy soil)] were treated with P (45 mg P kg ?1 soil) either before or after flooding for 4 weeks to investigate the effect of flooding on effectiveness of P fertilizer for rice growth. After 4 weeks, soils were air dried and crushed and then wet to field capacity and upland rice was grown in them for an additional 6 weeks. Addition of P fertilizer before rather than after flooding depressed the growth of the subsequently planted upland rice. During flooding, there was an increase in both acetate‐extractable Fe and the phosphate sorption capacity of soils, and a close relationship between them (r 2=0.96–0.98). When P was added before flooding, Olsen and Bray 1‐extractable P, shoot dry matter, and shoot P concentrations were depressed, indicating that flooding decreased availability of fertilizer P. A second pot experiment was conducted with three levels of lime as CaCO 3 [to establish pH (CaCl 2) in the oxidized soils at 4, 5, and 6] and four levels of P (0, 13, 26, and 52 mg P kg ?1 soil) added to the same two acid lowland rice soils under flooded and nonflooded conditions. Under continuously flooded conditions, pH increased to over 5.6 regardless of lime treatment, and there was no response of rice dry matter to liming after 6 weeks' growth, but the addition of P increased rice dry matter substantially in both soils. In nonflooded soils, when P was not applied, shoot dry matter was depressed by up to one‐half of that in plants grown under continuously flooded conditions. Under the nonflooded conditions, rice dry matter and leaf P increased with the addition of P, but less so than in flooded soils. Leaf P concentrations and shoot dry matter responded strongly to the addition of lime. The increase in shoot dry matter of rice with lime and P application in nonflooded soil was associated with a significant decline in soluble Al in the soil and an increase in plant P uptake. The current experiments show that the loss of soil‐water saturation may be associated with the inhibition of P absorption by excess soluble Al. By contrast, flooding decreased exchangeable Al to levels below the threshold for toxicity in rice. In addition, the decreased P availability with loss of soil‐water saturation may have been associated with a greater phosphate sorption capacity of the soils during flooding and after reoxidation due to occlusion of P within ferric oxyhydroxides formed. 相似文献

Nitrification inhibition of soil and applied fertilizer N is desirable as the accumulation of nitrates in soils in excess
of plant needs leads to enhanced N losses and reduced fertilizer N-use efficiency. In a growth chamber experiment, we studied
the effects of two commercial nitrification inhibitors (NIs), 4-amino 1,2,4-triazole (ATC) and dicyandiamide (DCD), and a
commonly available and economical material, encapsulated calcium carbide (CaC 2) (ECC) on the nitrification of soil and applied NH 4
+-N in a semiarid subtropical Tolewal sandy loam soil under upland [60% water-filled pore space (WFPS)] and flooded conditions
(120% WFPS). Nitrification of the applied 100 mg NH 4
+-N kg –1 soil under upland conditions was retarded most effectively (93%) by ECC for up to 10 days of incubation, whereas for longer
periods, ATC was more effective. After 20 days, only 16% of applied NH 4
+-N was nitrified with ATC as compared to 37% with DCD and 98% with ECC. Under flooded soil conditions, nitrates resulting
from nitrification quickly disappeared due to denitrification, resulting in a tremendous loss of fertilizer N (up to 70% of
N applied without a NI). Based on four indicators of inhibitor effectiveness, namely, concentration of NH 4
+-N and NO 3
–-N, percent nitrification inhibition, ratio of NH 4
+-N/NO 3
–-N, and total mineral N, ECC showed the highest relative efficiency throughout the 20-day incubation under flooded soil conditions.
At the end of the 20-day incubation, 96%, 58% and 38% of applied NH 4
+-N was still present in the soil where ECC, ATC and DCD were used, respectively. Consequently, nitrification inhibition of
applied fertilizer N in both arable crops and flooded rice systems could tremendously minimize N losses and help enhance fertilizer
N-use efficiency. These results suggest that for reducing the nitrification rate and resultant N losses in flooded soil systems
(e.g. rice lowlands), ECC is more effective than costly commercial NIs.

Abstract Efficient nitrogen (N) fertilizer management for paddy rice production is difficult because of potentially high N losses from denitrification, NH 3 volatilization, and leaching. The use of a nitrification inhibitor, by slowing the rate of nitrification of NH 4 +‐N sources prior to flooding, offers the potential to reduce denitrification losses that occur after flooding. Dicyandiamide (DCD) is one such nitrification inhibitor. The objective of this series of studies was to evaluate DCD for its effectiveness as a nitrification inhibitor in paddy rice production across an array of soils, management systems, and climate conditions. Studies were conducted on fine‐ and medium‐textured soils in Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Dicyandiamide was coated onto or formulated with urea (7 or 10% of total N as DCD‐N) and applied either broadcast pre‐plant incorporated or broadcast as a topdress application prior to flooding at the 4‐ to 5‐leaf development stage of the rice plant. These treatments were compared with urea applied either pre‐plant incorporated or in multiple applications timed to the peak N demand periods of rice. An array of N rates were used to model the yield response to levels of N. Similar studies utilizing 15N‐enriched urea were also conducted. The studies indicated that use of DCD delayed nitrification and tended to result in rice grain yield increases as compared with urea applied pre‐plant without DCD in drill‐seeded rice; however, proper application of urea in split applications gave more consistent results. In water‐seeded continuously flooded rice culture, use of DCD was advantageous only if the flood was delayed for more than 14 days after urea application. The 15N‐enriched studies indicated that highest N fertilizer recovery was associated with split topdress urea applications; however, addition of DCD resulted in increased immobilization of fertilizer N and release of soil N. 相似文献

Abstract When a soil is flooded, iron (Fe) reduction and methane (CH 4) production occurred in sequence as predicted by thermodynamics. The dissolution and precipitation of Fe reflected both soil pH and soil redox potential (Eh). The objective of our experiment was to determine both CH 4 production and Fe reduction as measured by Fe in solution in a flooded paddy soil over a wide range of closely controlled pH and Eh conditions. The greatest release of CH 4 gas occurred at neutral soil pH in combination with low soil redox potential (‐250 mV). Production of CH 4 decreased when soil pH was lowered in combination with an increase in the soil redox potential above ‐250 mV. Highest concentration of ferrous‐iron (Fe 2+) under reducing conditions occurred when soil pH was lowered. Thus Fe reduction influenced CH4 formation in the flooded paddy soil. Results indicated that CH 4 production was inhibited by the process of ferric‐iron (Fe 3+) reduction. 相似文献

Rabbiteye blueberries grown in sand culture were subjected to varying levels of N fertilization (0 ‐ 81 mg N/liter) applied in aqueous solution at the rate of 250 ml/plant daily. Essential elements other than N were kept constant. Shoot growth and leaf concentration of N, P, K, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, B, Zn, Co, and Al were determined. Shoot growth and percent leaf N increased with increased N levels. Shoot growth increased little at N fertilization levels of 0 ‐ 9 mg/ liter but increased rapidly at higher rates. N content in leaves followed a quadratic curve, with % N in leaves increasing more rapidly from 0 to 27 mg N/liter than from 27 to 81 mg N/liter fertilization levels. Leaf concentration of K, Ca, Mg, Mn, B, and Ca decreased linearly as N levels increased. Total content of all elements increased as N fertilization increased. Visual N deficiency became increasingly evident as % N content decreased below 1.4% N. Nitrogen, the most utilized element in plants, is usually the first to become deficient in sandy soils low in nutrient content (1). Rabbiteye blueberries (Vaccinium ashei Reade) are often grown on acidic, sandy, upland coastal plains soils that are low in cation exchange capacity, organic matter content, and available nutrients. In these acidic soils, NH4N is more available than in neutral soils (2). The NH4N source appears to be more suitable for blueberry growth, resulting in greater nutrient uptake, plant growth, and % N of leaf tissue than did the NO3N sources (5,6). Nitrogen deficiency symptoms in rabbiteye blueberries are characterized by small, yellow and/or red leaves and stunted plants (3). Since young rabbiteye plants are very sensitive to fertilizer, similar chlorosis symptoms (yellowing or reddening of leaves) can be associated with over‐fertilization, possibly due to root damage (7). Cain (2) found that leaves from healthy container‐grown highbush (V. corymbosum L.) blueberry plants contained about 2% N and higher levels of K and Ca than field‐grown plants. Greenhouse and Field studies indicate that leaf N content in rabbiteye blueberries is usually lower, ranging from about 1.5 to 1.8 (3,7,8). Increased N fertilization decreased the nutrient uptake of other essential elements (Ca and Mg) in rabbiteye blueberries (6). In highbush, Popenoe (4) indicated that a depression of P and K might occur under conditions of high N levels. This study was initiated to ascertain the effect of NH4N fertilization levels on uptake patterns of essential elements and to determine the relationships of N fertilization, leaf N content, plant growth, and visible deficiency symptoms. 相似文献

Forty‐five soil samples were collected from rice paddy land (R), tea garden land (T), forestland (F), brush land (B), and upland (U) in Jiangxi province, a subtropical region of China. These soils were derived from Quaternary red earth (Q), Tertiary red sandstone (S), and granite (G). Their denitrification capacities were determined after treatment with 200 mg NO 3−‐N kg −1 soil by measuring changes in NO 3−‐N content during a 28‐day anaerobic incubation under N 2 gas in the headspace, at 30°C. The subtropical soils studied here were characterized by generally small denitrification capacities, ranging from no denitrification capacity to complete disappearance of added NO 3−‐N within 11 days of incubation. With few exceptions, NO 3−‐N reduction with incubation time followed a first‐order relationship with reaction constants of 0 – 0.271 day −1, but the data could be simulated better by a logarithmic relationship. Thus, denitrification capacity was determined by the reaction constant of the first‐order reaction, the slope of the logarithmic relationship, and the averaged NO 3−‐N reduction rate in the first 7 days of anaerobic incubation (ranging from 0 to 28.5 mg kg −1day −1), and was significantly larger in the soils derived from G than from Q and S for all land uses except for rice paddy land. Soil organic carbon and nitrogen availability are the key factors that determine differences in denitrification capacity among the three soil parent materials. Rice cultivation significantly promoted denitrification capacity compared with the other four land uses and masked the effect of soil parent materials on denitrification capacity. This is most likely due to increases in organic carbon and total N content in the soil, which promoted the population and biological activities of microorganisms which are able to respire anaerobically when the rice soil is flooded. Neither the increased pH of upland soil caused by the addition of lime for upland crop production, nor the decreased pH of the tea garden soil by the acidification effect of tea plants altered soil denitrification capacity. Our results suggest that land use and management practices favour soil carbon and/or nitrogen accumulation and anaerobic microorganism activities enhance soil denitrification capacity. 相似文献

Abstract Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. Chinensis group) production is expanding in the U. S., and guidelines regarding its production under Western cultural practices are needed. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of N source and rate on Chinese cabbage yield, marketability, and wrapper leaf nutrient concentrations, and to estimate the critical wrapper leaf‐N concentration associated with maximum yield and marketability. Chinese cabbage was grown in five sequential plantings using raised‐bed, polyethylene mulch culture with subsurface irrigation on a sandy soil. Nitrogen fertilizer was applied at rates of 0, 67,112, and 157 kg/ha using the following sources: 1) ammonium nitrate. 2) calcium nitrate, 3) urea‐ammonium nitrate solution (Uram, 32% N), 4) urea, and 5) a urea‐calcium solution (18% N). Mature Chinese cabbage wrapper leaf concentrations of P, Ca, and Mg increased with increasing N rate, while leaf‐K concentration decreased. Leaf‐N concentration increased in response to N rate, but was not affected by N source or harvest date. Leaf‐P, K, Mg, and B concentrations were sufficient or high according to established standards, but leaf‐Ca was low. Leaf‐Ca and Mg concentrations were lowest with N sources containing only urea, and highest where at least part of the N was applied as NO 3 ‐. Chinese cabbage head weight and percentage marketable heads increased as N rate increased. Yield and quality were highest with N sources which contained NO 3 ‐, and were smallest where N was applied entirely as urea, which may have been due to plant sensitivity to NH 4 +. The critical value of mature cabbage wrapper leaf‐N concentration above which yield or marketability was not limited was estimated to be 36 to 41 mg/g, which agrees well with established standards. 相似文献

The influx and partitioning of sodium (Na) is controlled by potassium (K)/Na selectivity/exchange mechanisms. Since ammonium‐nitrogen (NH 4‐N) has been shown to inhibit K absorption and K/Na selectivity/exchange mechanisms control Na influx and partitioning, our objective was to observe if NH 4‐N affects Na influx and partitioning in muskmelon. Muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) were grown in a pH controlled nutrient solution with 100 mM NaCl in a complete nutrient solution containing either 10 mM nitrate‐nitrogen (NO 3‐N) or NH 4‐N. With NH 4‐N, Na accumulation and partitioning to the leaf blade increased while K absorption was almost completely inhibited. A second study omitted K to simulate the inhibition of K absorption by NH 4‐N and monitored Na accumulation and partitioning as K was depleted in the plant. Sodium accumulation and partitioning to the leaf increased as K decreased in the plant, mirroring the effect of NH 4‐N. Roots appeared healthy in both studies. Our work indicates that at a given level of NaCl stress, NO 3‐N reduces the level of stress experienced by muskmelon plants through reducing the net rate of Na influx and transport to the sensitive leaf blade, not by reducing chloride (Cl) absorption, thereby permitting these plants to “avoid”; this stress. 相似文献

Rice‐straw amendment increased methane production by 3‐fold over that of unamended control. Application of P as single superphosphate at 100 μg (g soil) –1 inhibited methane (CH 4) production distinctly in flooded alluvial rice soil, in the absence more than in the presence of rice straw. CH 4 emission from rice plants (cv. IR72) from alluvial soil treated with single superphosphate as basal application, in the presence and absence of rice straw, and held under non‐flooded and flooded conditions showed distinct variations. CH 4 emission from non‐flooded soil amended with rice straw was high and almost similar to that of flooded soil without rice‐straw amendment. The cumulative CH 4 efflux was highest (1041 mg pot –1) in rice‐straw‐amended flooded soil. Appreciable methanogenic reactions in rice‐straw‐amended soils were evident under both flooded and non‐flooded conditions. Rice‐straw application substantially altered the balance between total aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms even in non‐flooded soil. The mitigating effects of single‐superphosphate application or low‐moisture regime on CH 4 production and emission were almost nullified due to enhanced activities of methanogenic archaea in the presence of rice straw. 相似文献

A hypothesis has been presented and tested that bicarbonate (HCO 3) and nitrate (NO 3) are the most important anions inducing iron (Fe) chlorosis because these anions increase the pH of leaf apoplast which in turn depresses ferric‐iron [Fe(III]) reduction, and hence, the uptake of Fe into the symplasm. Experiments with young sunflower ( Helianthus annuus) plants showed that nutrition with NO 3 as the sole nitrogen (N) source induced chlorosis whereas ammonium nitrate (NH 4NO 3) did not. Monohydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate) also favoured the development of chlorosis. The degree of chlorosis was not related to the Fe concentration in the leaves. Both anion species, NO 3 and HCO 3, increased the pH of the leaf apoplast which was measured by means of the fluorescence dye 5‐carboxyfluorescein. A highly significant negative correlation between leaf apoplast pH and chlorophyll concentration in the leaves (r = ‐0.97) was found. Ferric‐Fe reduction in the apoplast—measured by means of ferrocene—provided evidence that a low leaf apoplast pH, obtained with ammonium (NH 4) supply, favoured the reduction of Fe(III) as compared with a higher leaf apoplast pH obtained with NO 3 supply. These results support the hypothesis tested. 相似文献

Rice straw including leaf sheaths and blades put in nylon mesh bags was placed in the plow layer of a Japanese paddy field after harvest under upland conditions and after transplanting of rice seedlings under flooded conditions. In addition, rice straw that was decomposed under the upland conditions during the off-crop season in winter was placed again in soil at the time of transplanting. The materials were collected periodically to analyze the community structure of the bacteria and fungi responsible for rice straw decomposition by PCR-RFLP analysis. The PCR products with 27f and 1492r primers designed for bacterial 16S rDNA and with EF3 and EF4 primers designed for fungal 18S rDNA were digested with four restriction endonucleases ( Hinf I, Sau3A I, Hae III, EeoR I). Bacterial communities in the decomposing rice straw were different from each other between upland and flooded conditions, between leaf sheaths and blades, and between straw samples with and without decomposition under upland conditions during the off-crop season. Fungal communities in the decomposing rice straw were also different between the leaf sheaths and blades under upland soil conditions. Score plots of bacterial and fungal communities in the principal component analysis were separated from the plot of the straw materials along with the duration of the placement, indicating the succession of bacterial and fungal communities in decomposing rice straw with time. 相似文献

Abstract The relationships between nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations in surface flooding water and those in the leachate of various soil depths were monitored, and temporal variation of leaching losses of N and P from a paddy plot during rice cultivation was estimated under the conditions of southern Korea. Even flooded conditions nitrification in subsurface soil was identified, but nitrate concentrations in leachate were less than 10 mg/L, the standard drinking water nitrate concentration set by the World Health Organization (WHO). The NO 3‐N and ortho‐P concentrations in the leachate were generally higher than those in the surface flooding water. Field data implied that leaching losses would not be accurately estimated under the flooded conditions of the paddy field when using the N and P concentrations of surface flooding water and infiltration depth. The leaching losses of NO 3‐N from paddy fields were high immediately after fertilization. The study results suggested that proper fertilization and irrigation strategies are required to reduce leaching losses of NO 3‐N from paddy fields. 相似文献

Nutrient concentrations in the soil and crop uptake from incorporated green manure and urea in flooded rice was studied in
field experiments. Release of plant-available nitrogen (NH 4
+-N) from green manure was slightly delayed compared with that from prilled urea (PU) because Sesbania rostrata L. and Aeschynomene afraspera L. released the N gradually after their decomposition, whereas N became available immediately after PU application. Exchangeable
NH 4
+-N concentration in soil peaked at 163 mg kg –1 in the transplanted rice (TPR) and 198 mg kg —1 in broadcast-seeded rice (BSR) at 0 and 1 week after PU application. Broadcast-seeded rice depleted NH 4
+-N faster than did TPR because of the crop‘s vigorous growth in the former during the early stage. Soil solution NH 4
+-N followed a similar trend to that of soil NH 4
+-N. Incorporation of S. rostrata and A. afraspera increased the concentration of P, K +, Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ in soil solution more than did the application of PU. However, zinc concentration decreased in all treatments. Both PU and
green manure increased the N status of the rice plants and enhanced the uptake of P, K, Fe, Mn and Zn by the rice crop. This
suggests that application of green manures improves the uptake of these nutrients by the crop. The highest apparent N recovery
was obtained with PU followed by green manure.

Poinsettia cultivars Supjibi and Freedom were grown in eight hydroponic solutions to develop a baseline solution for further nutritional studies. Four solutions contained nitrogen (N) from Ca(NO 3) 2‐4H 2O and KNO 3 (denoted as ‐NH 4) and four contained Ca(NO 3) 2‐4H 2O, KNO 3, nitric acid, and NH 4NO 3 as the N sources (denoted as +NH 4). The four ‐NH 4 and +NH 4 solutions were further divided by an IX or 2X rate of micronutrients [boron (B), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), and zinc (Zn)] (denoted as IX or 2X). A factorial of these four solutions at 2 concentrations (100 mg L 1 of N and potassium (K) and 15 mg L 1 phosphorus (P), or 300 mg L 1 of N and K and 46 mg L ‐1 P) was studied. Greater leaf and stem dry weight for both ‘Supjibi’ and ‘Freedom’ was observed in plants grown with the +NH 4 solutions, with a larger increase occurring with’ Supjibi’. Leaf NH 4‐N content for both cultivars was higher for both the 100 and 300 mg L ‐1 N and K fertilization rates when NH 4‐N was included. The leaf K content was highest for the plants grown with the +NH/2X solution for ‘Supjibi’, for both fertilization rates, and leaf K content increased as the K application rate increased. Results indicate that for nutritional studies with poinsettias, hydroponic solutions should include between 12.5% to 33% of the N in the NH 4 form, a calcium magnesium (Ca:Mg) ratio of 2:1, and a micronutrient concentration of (mg I/ 1) 0.5, 0.02, 6.6, 0.5, 0.1, and 0.05, respectively, for B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, and Zn, for adequate plant growth. 相似文献

Leaf chlorophyll content is closely related to leaf nitrogen (N) content, so it is reasonable to assume that ammonium‐N (NH 4‐N): nitrate‐N (NO 3‐N) ratio in the nutrient solution used to grow tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) hydroponically may affect leaf greenness, and consequently chlorophyll meter (SPAD) readings. It has also been shown that increasing nutrient solution strength (NSS) increases tomato productivity, but there are no reports regarding how NSS affects SPAD readings under greenhouse conditions. Genotype may also influence SPAD readings, and standardization for cultivar and sampling time may be needed. The objective of this study was to characterize SPAD readings for five tomato cultivars and SPAD reading response to a combination of two NSS (1X and 4X Steiner solution strength daily applied 18 days after transplanting at 7 p.m.) and two concentrations of NH 4‐N in solution (0 and 25%) in order to evaluate the potential of SPAD readings as a tomato yield predictor in greenhouse production systems. The SPAD readings were not uniform across tomato varieties tested, being consistently higher for ‘Max’ and lower for the other varieties. Initially, SPAD readings for tomato varieties used in this study were low at the vegetative stage, and increased up to 40 DAT, but subsequently decreased at 49 DAT, or the fruit set of the first and second clusters. After this time, SPAD readings showed no variation. Chlorophyll meter readings for ‘Max’ were higher in the top plant layers, but decreased in the top plant layer of the other tomato varieties. The SPAD readings were higher for plants supplied with 25% NH 4‐N than those without NH 4‐N in solution, but the use of a nighttime nutrient solution did not affect SPAD readings. None of the possible interactions among tomato variety, NH 4‐N: NO 3‐N ratio, and NSS were consistently significant. 相似文献

Cool white fluorescent (CWF) light reduces Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ while low pressure sodium (LPS) light does not. Cotton plants grown under CWF light are green, while those yrown under LPS light develop a chlorosis very similar to the chlorosis that develops when the plants are deficient in iron (Fe). It could be that CWF light (which has ultra violet) makes iron more available for plant use by maintaining more Fe 2+ in the plant. Two of the factors commonly induced by Fe‐stress in dicotyledonous plants‐‐hydroyen ions and reductants released by the roots‐‐were measured as indicators of the Fe‐deficiency stress response mechanism in M8 cotton. The plants were grown under LPS and CWF light in nutrient solutions containing either NO 3‐N or NH 4‐N as the source of nitrogen, and also in a fertilized alkaline soil. Leaf chlorophyll concentration varied significantly in plants grown under the two light sources as follows: CWF+Fe > LPS+Fe > CWF‐Fe ≥ LPS‐Fe. The leaf nitrate and root Fe concentrations were significantly greater and leaf Fe was generally lower in plants grown under LPS than CWF light. Hydrogen ions were extruded by Fe‐deficiency stressed roots grown under either LPS or CWF light, but “reductants”; were extruded only by the plants grown under CWF light. In tests demonstrating the ability of light to reduce Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ in solutions, enough ultra violet penetrated the chlorotic leaf of LPS yrown plants to reduce some Fe 3+ in a beaker below, but no reduction was evident through a yreen CWF grown leaf. The chlorosis that developed in these cotton plants appeared to be induced by a response to the source of liyht and not by the fertilizer added. It seems possible that ultra violet liyht could affect the reduction of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ in leaves and thus control the availability of this iron to biological systems requiring iron in the plant. 相似文献

As repeatedly reported, soil flooding improves the availability of P to rice. This is in contrast with an increased P sorption in paddy soils. The effects of soil flooding on the transformation of Fe oxides and the adsorption/desorption of P of two paddy soils of Zhejiang Province in Southeast‐China were studied in anaerobic incubation experiments (submerging with water in N 2 atmosphere). Soil flooding significantly increased oxalate‐extractable Fe (Fe ox), mainly at the expense of dithionite‐soluble Fe (Fe DCB), as well as oxalate‐extractable P (P ox), but decreased the ratio of P ox/Fe ox. Flooding largely increased both, P adsorption and the maximum P adsorption capacity. The majority of newly sorbed P in the soils was P ox, but also more newly retained P was found to be not extractable by oxalate. Flooding also changed the characteristics of P desorption in the soils. Due to a decrease of the saturation index of the P sorption capacity, P adsorbed by flooded soils was much less desorbable than that from non‐flooded soils. There are obviously significant differences in the nature of both, the Fe ox and P ox fractions under non‐flooded and flooded conditions. The degree of the changes in Fe ox, P ox, P adsorption and P desorption by flooding depended on the contents of amorphous and total Fe oxides in non‐flooded soils. Our results confirm that the adsorption and desorption behavior of P in paddy soils is largely controlled by the transformation of the Fe oxides. The reasons of the often‐reported improved P availability to rice induced by flooding, in spite of the unfavorable effect on P desorbability, are discussed. 相似文献

Denitrification has long been considered a major mechanism of N loss when N fertilizer is applied to flooded rice paddies. However, the direct determination of denitrification in soils is almost impossible because of the high atmospheric background of dinitrogen (N 2). Dissolved N 2 in a small water sample can be rapidly and precisely measured through membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS). This study is the first to directly measure N 2 flux through MIMS in flooded rice paddy plots that received different amounts of urea. Ammonia (NH 3) volatilization was measured simultaneously to verify whether NH 3 volatilization and denitrification are complementary loss mechanisms. The average cumulative N 2–N loss measured by MIMS 21 days after fertilization was 4.7?±?1.7 % of the applied N, which was within the range of the reported values obtained by cumulative recovery of (N 2 + N 2O)– 15N and 15N-balance technique. Underestimation or overestimation of denitrification can be prevented in MIMS given that N 2 can be measured directly without 15N-labeled fertilizer. A good positive correlation was found between the dissolved in situ N 2 concentrations of floodwater and the denitrification rates of intact soil cores. Urea incorporation reduced NH 3 volatilization unlike surface broadcasting. However, urea incorporation significantly increased cumulative N 2–N loss during the 21 days after fertilization. Correlation analysis showed that nitrate (NO 3 ?–N) concentration in floodwater could be the primary restricting factor for soil denitrification in the experimental field. Results suggest that MIMS is a promising technique for the measurement of denitrification in a flooded rice paddy. 相似文献
