Abstract Estimates of the growth parameters (L and K), mortality coefficients (Z, M and F) and exploitation rate (E) for the blackspot snapper, Lutjanus fulviflamma (Forsskål) from the Mafia Island Marine Park (MIMP) and adjacent intensively fished areas in Tanzania were determined. Sectioned otoliths showed that L. fulviflamma in the MIMP attained a maximum age of 18 years, with a high proportion of fish between 6 and 10 years old. The maximum age was 8 years in the intensively fished areas, with a preponderance of 2‐ and 4‐year‐old fish. The size structures of the populations in the MIMP and that in the intensively fished areas were markedly different, with the MIMP fish averaging (±SE) 211.4 ± 0.38 mm TL, but 154.6 ± 0.32 mm TL in the intensively fished areas. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L = 290.3 mm TL, K = 0.15 year?1 and t0 = ?2.7 years. There was no significant difference in growth between the four populations (L: F‐stat = 0.14, P = 1.000, and K: F‐stat = 0.26, P = 0.992). Total mortality was 0.55 and 1.64 year?1 in the MIMP and intensively fished areas, respectively, natural mortality 0.27 year?1 and fishing mortality 0.18 and 1.37 year?1 in the MIMP and intensively fished areas, respectively. The exploitation rate was 0.51 and 0.84 in the MIMP and intensively fished areas, respectively. The artisanal seine net fishery is directed mainly at younger fish in the intensively fished areas resulting in growth overfishing. The protracted life span, the slow growth and natural mortality rates imply that L. fulviflamma is vulnerable to overfishing and that the protection provided by the park, although limited, is vital for sustaining the fishery at Mafia Island.  相似文献

Effects of temperature on food consumption, growth and oxygen consumption were estimated for the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii postlarvae at 23 °C, 28 °C and 33 °C in the laboratory. The results showed that the animal's initial body weight had a close linear relationship with food consumption and growth. Food consumption increased directly with temperature. Consumption rates (C; mg day?1 ind?1 ) of the 28 °C and 33 °C groups were much higher than that of the 23 °C group (P < 0.001), and the 33 °C group's consumption rate was higher than that of the 28 °C group (P < 0.05). The relationship of food consumption with temperature and initial body weight (W; mg) could be described as: C = 0.0679W + 0.185t? 3.17. Growth increased significantly with increased temperature. The relationship among specific growth rate, temperature and initial body weight was as follows: SGR = ?0.110W + 0.213t + 0.176. However, temperature showed no effect on growth efficiency. Oxygen consumption increased significantly with temperature (P < 0.01). The weight‐specific oxygen consumption rates (mg O2 g?1 h?1) at 23 °C, 28 °C and 33 °C were 0.83, 1.16 and 1.49 mg O2 g?1 h?1 for 61.92 mg M. rosenbergii.  相似文献

Otolith microstructure analysis and hydrodynamic modelling were combined to study growth patterns in young‐of‐the‐year (YoY) sprat, Sprattus sprattus, which were sampled in October 2002 in the central Baltic Sea. The observed ‘window of survival’, approximated by the distribution of back‐calculated days of first feeding (DFF), was narrow compared to the extended spawning season of sprat in the Baltic Sea (mean± SD = 22 June ± 14.1 days) and indicated that only individuals born in summer survived until October 2002. Within the group of survivors, individuals born later in the season exhibited faster larval, but more rapidly decreasing juvenile growth rates than earlier born conspecifics. Back‐calculated larval growth rates of survivors (0.48–0.69 mm day?1) were notably higher than those previously reported for average larval sprat populations, suggesting that the YoY population was predominantly comprised of individuals which grew faster during the larval stage. Daily mean temperatures, experienced across the entire YoY population, were derived from Lagrangian particle simulations and correlated with (1) detrended otolith growth and (2) back‐calculated, daily somatic growth rates of survivors. The results showed that abrupt changes in ambient temperature can be detected in the seasonal pattern of otolith growth, and that higher temperatures led to significantly faster growth throughout the entire age range of YoY sprat.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were the determination of mortality, growth, condition factor and meat yield, biochemical variables, and somatic secondary production of Pinna rugosa (Sowerby, 1835) in suspended and bottom conditions in Bahia de La Paz, Mexico. The use of each of these parameters was analysed as a decision element for managing the resource. The experimental design was based on the recruitment of wild spat on collectors and introducing bivalves of the same size into different areas. In each area, bivalve samples were used both in suspended trays, and lying on the bottom, approximating their natural occurrence, but surrounded by a plastic mesh fence. The stocking densities in both cultivation systems were 50, 100 and 150 m?2. The organisms were checked monthly for almost 2 years, recording various measurements. In one of the treatments that most closely represented the average, the growth values were 19.5 mm month?1 and 14.5 g month?1 in the first year, a length-growth Von Bertalanffy K of 0.118 and an instantaneus growth rate in weight G of 4.77. During the first year, there was annual mortality of 22% on the bottom and 11% at the surface, with somatic secondary production, in dry weight, of 17.8 g per organism. The results of the estimation of each variable were submitted to a multifactorial anova . NO significant differences in K as a function of sites, cultivation systems or density could be found. The effect of site on instantaneous growth rate G was significant. The largest values were from the inner bay (site 1) where the highest mortality rate also occurred. Among condition factor, meat yield and biochemical components, only lipids showed a difference for systems and site factors. We concluded that secondary production gave statistical elements for the selection and culture decision-making in all factors tested. The results showed good aquaculture prospects for P. rugosa.  相似文献

Hatchery‐reared juvenile spotted babylon Babylonia areolata (mean initial shell length 12.8 mm) were cultured intensively to marketable size in three 3.0 × 2.5 × 0.7 m indoor canvas rectangular tanks. The duplicate treatments of flowthrough and semi‐closed recirculating sea‐water systems were compared at an initial stocking density of 300 individuals m?2 (2250 juveniles per tank). The animals were fed ad libitum with fresh carangid fish Selaroides leptolepis once daily. During 240 culture days, average growth rates in shell length and body weight were 3.86 mm month?1 and 1.47 g month?1 for the flowthrough system and 3.21 mm month?1 and 1.10 g month?1 for those in the semi‐closed recirculating system. Survival in the flowthrough system (95.77%) was significantly higher than that in the semi‐closed recirculating system (79.28%). Feed conversion ratios were 1.68 and 1.96 for flowthrough and semi‐closed recirculating systems respectively.  相似文献

Formulated abalone feeds used by the culture industry are believed to be unsuitable for use at elevated water temperatures (>20 °C). The aim of this study was to develop a feed that could safely be fed to abalone cultured at elevated water temperatures by optimizing dietary protein/energy levels. Abalone (54.90 ± 0.08 mm; 28.99 ± 0.16 g) were cultured at either 18, 22 or 24 °C, and fed diets containing graded levels of protein (18–26%) and energy (11.6–16.2 MJ kg?1). Abalone growth was temperature dependent, declining from 4.33 g month?1 at 18 °C to 0.77 g month?1 at 24 °C. Shell length and weight gain were independent of dietary protein, provided that the digestible energy content of the diet was not lower than 13.5 MJ kg?1. Dietary energy levels below 13.5MJ kg‐1 resulted in significant reductions in shell growth, weight gain and increased mortality from 5% to 27%. Feed consumption of the 22% and 26% protein diets with 11.6 MJ kg?1 was significantly higher (0.53 ± 0.04 and 0.55 ± 0.04% bd. wt. day?1 respectively) compared with abalone fed the 16.2 MJ kg?1 diets at the same protein levels (combined mean of 0.45 ± 0.04% bd. wt. day?1) indicating that consumption was linked to energy requirement. The growth and mortality results suggest that abalone cultured at these temperatures have a dietary digestible energy requirement of at least 13.5 MJ kg?1.  相似文献

Abstract Age and growth of Rachycentron canadum (L.) was studied in northern and eastern Australia to provide data for a preliminary assessment of the stock and to explore possible fisheries management strategies using minimum legal lengths. Fish collected from commercial and recreational fisheries ranged in size and weight from 125 to 1633 mm fork length (FL) and 0.031 to 55 kg respectively. Annual growth increments in sectioned otoliths formed by November–December. Estimated ages ranged from 0 to 7 yr for both genders. Longevity was estimated to be at least 13 yr. Von Bertalanffy growth function parameters were L = 1160 mm FL, K = 0.63 yr?1 and t0 = ?0.21 yr?1. Rachycentron canadum reach 600 mm FL in their first year and over 1000 mm FL in 3 years. Natural and total mortalities were estimated at 0.35 yr?1 and 0.85 yr?1, respectively. Populations of R. canadum may be vulnerable to growth overfishing under the current minimum legal length of 750 mm total length (TL) in Queensland waters. An increase in minimum legal length to 850 mm TL is recommended.  相似文献

Settlement, growth and mortality of the brown shrimp, Crangon Crangon L., were studied in the north Frisian Wadden Sea over a period of 19 months to fill existing gaps regarding the species' life cycle, and thereby to clarify points related to the fishery. Settlement of postlarval shrimp in the shallow areas occurred in three batches: in May; during summer; and an overwintering batch. Compared with an earlier model based on laboratory-derived data, a new growth model based on field data predicts similar growth rates for the earlier phase of the shrimp life cycle, but higher rates for the later stages of the cohorts. Mean growth rate of the different cohorts over the size range sampled was 0.23 ± 0.08 mm day?1. Of the factors tested, only temperature significantly influenced growth rates. Preliminary estimates of instantaneous total mortality values for shrimp cohorts from these shallow areas ranged from 0.03 to 0.12 day?1. Salinity explained most of the variation in mortality rates, but this most likely indicates an indirect effect of depth on emigration. The cumulative effects of growth rates estimated from the new model and lower losses through predation could imply a higher contribution of winter eggs to the autumn fishery. This, however, needs further evaluation to properly quantify the trade-offs between settlement and recruitment to the fishery, as well as the growth and mortality rates.  相似文献

The effect of diet on the growth and survival in captivity of the octopus Enteroctopus megalocyathus Gould, 1852 was researched to establish culture potential. This is one of two commercially important octopus species that inhabit the Chilean coast. A positive energy budget, averaging 678 J day?1 g of dry weight (dw), was recorded in specimens maintained in tanks and fed ad libitum on a diet of three species of crustacean decapods. On the other hand, the energy budget of octopus specimens fed on the mussel Mytilus chilensis (Hupé) was negative, averaging ?250.90 J day?1 g dw?1. Ingestion rates varied between diets (t=46.45; d.f.=18; P<0.001), but no variations were recorded in energy loss resulting from metabolism (t=0.67; d.f.=16; P>0.05) or ammonia excretion (t=1.39; d.f.=16; P>0.05). An average instantaneous growth rate (IGR) of between 1.96% and 0.49% was recorded in specimens fed on crustaceans, depending on the size of the octopus and the period of time. The IGR in specimens fed on mussels was ?0.32±0.05. The IGR of specimens fed on crustaceans and maintained in suspended systems was 1.36±0.9%. The mean mortality with crustacean and mussel diets was 11.07±5.5% and 74±1% respectively. The results indicate that E. megalocyathus can survive and grow in captivity, both in tanks and in suspended systems, when fed on a diet of crustaceans.  相似文献

In this paper the results of a study conducted on the culture‐based fisheries in small (ranging from 2 to 160 ha), farmer‐managed reservoirs in YenBai and ThaiNguyen Provinces in the northern highland region of Vietnam, for the production cycles of 1997/98, 98/99 and 99/00 are presented. The small reservoirs are leased to small farmers by the provincial authorities for fishery activities, and all lessees adopt culture‐based fisheries when fingerlings of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and mrigal (Cirrihinus mrigala) are stocked between March and mid‐April each year and harvested, using large seine nets, after approximately 11–12 months. The mean yields from reservoirs in YenBai and ThaiNguyen Provinces in 97/98, 98/99 and 99/00 production cycles were 251, 332 and 253, and 331, 372 and 210 kg ha?1 respectively. There were major differences in the fish productivity in the reservoirs in the two Provinces, and in a reservoir between culture cycles. The stocking strategies appeared to be rather ad hoc, being determined by the availability of seed stock and the financial status of the lessees. Accordingly, there was no apparent consistent trend in the improvement of yields from the culture‐based fishery practice throughout the growth cycles. The fish yields in reservoirs in each Province were significantly related to reservoir area (exponentially) and to mean weight of stocked fish and conductivity (logarithmically). Of the stocked fish, the highest returns were obtained with mrigal and bighead carp, which collectively contributed > 50% to the harvest. The return from common carp was the lowest. The mean growth rate of grass carp (2.7 g day?1), followed by bighead carp (2.0 g day?1) was the highest in reservoirs in YenBai Province, bighead carp (4.0 g day?1) followed by grass carp (3.2 g day?1) was the highest in ThaiNguyen Province. The seed stocked on average accounted for 65% and 48% of the total operating costs in YenBai and ThaiNguyen Provinces, and the mean cost:benefit ratio of the culture‐based fishery in the two Provinces was 0.35 and 0.37 respectively. The culture‐based fishery on average contributed about 28% to the gross income of a farmer lessee.  相似文献

Larval growth, age, growth effect and instantaneous mortality were estimated in anchoveta, Engraulis ringens, collected biweekly during the austral winter of 2014 in nearshore waters off Bay of Antofagasta (23°41′W–70°30′S), northern Chile. Through measuring standard length (SL) and sagitta microstructure analysis, it was estimated that the growth rate of E. ringens larvae decreased from June (0.85 mm day?1) to August (0.50 mm day?1). However, the water temperature was homogeneous during the sampling dates (14.6, 15.2, 14.4, and 14.6°C), suggesting that the decelerating larval growth was not linked to changes in sea temperature. Additionally, larvae with slow growth have larger otoliths compared with conspecifics with fast growth (growth effect). Larval mortality rates tended to decrease until the middle of July (0.18 per day) but increased to 0.25 per day in early August, which coincided with lower food availability (i.e., chlorophyll‐a, 2.7–5.6 mg m?3) and a high occurrence of smaller larvae (1.58–11.5 mm). Partial least squares analysis indicates low covariance between the biological and oceanographic variables (PLS: 11.71%), suggesting that other factors, such as parental effects, may explain the abrupt decrease in the larval growth rates.  相似文献

The middle stretch of the Madeira River has supported an intensive commercial fishery for several decades. Developed in an area of rapids and waterfalls, this fishery focuses primarily on catfish stocks, mainly pimelodids. Data from fish landings collected in the years immediately prior to the start in operations of two large hydroelectric dams were used to estimate growth and mortality rates for Pirinampus pirinampu (Spix & Agassiz) and Brachyplatystoma platynemum Boulenger. In addition, stock assessment was carried out for both species, and the results used to evaluate the status of the fishery. Mean population parameters were L = 80.85 cm (total length), k = 0.52 year?1, = 3.53, A0.95 = 6 year, = 0.87, = 1.41–1.64 and = 2.28–2.51 for P. pirinampu; and L = 95.55 cm (total length), k = 0.28 year?1, = 3.40, winter point = 0.41, A0.95 = 11 year, = 0.55, = 0.16–0.35 and = 0.71–0.90 for B. platynemum. Yield‐per‐recruit analysis indicated P. pirinampu was overfished and that the stock of B. platynemum was under‐exploited. Moreover, overfishing of the P. pirinampu stock and the effects of fragmentation caused by the construction of the dam should be monitored.  相似文献

Between 1989 and 1992, small-scale grow-out trials of cultured Tridacna gigas (L.) were established at 40 coastal villages in Solomon Islands. The juvenile giant clams were delivered to village participants at a mean size of 34.6 mm shell length (SL) and a mean age of 380 days. The clams were grown in cages of wire mesh placed on trestles in shallow, subtidal, coral reef habitats. After a mean grow-out period of 297 days, the clams were a mean size of 77.6 mm SL, a suitable size for sale to the aquarium market. Mean growth rate was 4.1 mm month?1. In 32 of the 53 cages involved in the trials, all clams were removed completely from the cage every 3 months for cleaning. The mean survival rate of these clams was 54%. The clams in the remaining 21 cages were not removed for cleaning and their survival was significantly lower (22%). The growth rate of clams removed for cleaning (3.7 mm month?1) was, however, significantly lower than the growth rate of undisturbed clams (4.8 mm month?1). At current prices for juvenile T. gigas in the aquarium trade, farmers who regularly cleaned clams would have netted a minimum of US$180 for a cage initially stocked with 390 clams. Fanners who did not clean their clams would have netted only US$40 per cage due to poorer survival.  相似文献

Abstract The catch by anglers of adult Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., was studied over a 5-year period in the River Gaula, Norway. Atlantic salmon were caught over a wide range (23–570 m3 s?1) of the observed extent of river discharge (13–950 m3 s?1) and throughout the range of temperature (4–23 °C), but both factors strongly affected catch rate. Significant correlations between the number of Atlantic salmon caught daily, and water temperature (r = 0.33) and river discharge (r = ?0.42) were found in 1987 and 1989, respectively. The highest daily catch occurred between 50 and 150 m3 s?1, and at temperatures between 13 and 16 °C. Threshold values for water discharge and temperature were found to exist at 250 m3 s?1 and 8 °C, with the highest catches below and above these values, respectively.  相似文献

The individual food intake of each fish in each of four groups of Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus (L.) (mean weight: 422 g) was monitored by direct observation over a period of 21 days. Gross feed conversion efficiency (= growth·feed intake?1), net feed conversion efficiency and maintenance ration were estimated by regression analysis. Specific growth rates were found to be linearly related to weight-specific consumption at a temperature of 8–9°C: growth = 1.922· feed intake ? 0.242. Maintenance ration was 0.126% of body weight day?1. The gross feed conversion efficiency increased asymptotically with increasing feed intakes and growth rates, and was found to approach 1.9 at high growth rates (0.5 on a dry weight basis). One feeding per day seemed to be sufficient for maximum food intake and growth rate.  相似文献

The Catarina scallop Argopecten ventricosus is a highly valued resource. Although its hatchery spat production has already been reported, the effects of initial larval stocking density have never been reported for production purposes. This study evaluates A. ventricosus growth and survival in triplicate using three stocking densities: low (LD; 2 larvae mL?1), medium (MD; 4 larvae mL?1), and high (HD; 6 larvae mL?1). Three-day old larvae were reared in 18-L plastic carboy at 25.6?±?0.5 °C and fed with a microalgal blend of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans (1:1 cell number ratio) for 7 days, equivalent to 10 post-fertilization days (PFD). Higher specific growth rate was recorded at LD (15.8?±?0.2%) after 8 PFD of culture compared to MD (1.6?±?0.5%) and HD (4.1?±?1.8%) densities. The least time required for 60% of the larvae to reach the pediveliger stage was recorded at LD condition (10 PFD). Higher survival was recorded at HD (58.8?±?3.1%) at 8 PFD compared to MD (53.5?±?3.1%) and LD (43.9?±?3.0%). After 8 PFD, stocking density was highly related to larval growth and survival. To increase production and growth, and reduce the time required to reach pediveliger stage, stocking density should start with 6 larvae mL?1 and be reduced to 2 larvae mL?1 at 7 PFD.

  1. Incidental capture by fisheries is one of the principal threats to sea turtles. This study analysed spatial and temporal patterns of sea turtle bycatch, and estimated the direct initial mortality rate of these animals, in the industrial double‐rig‐bottom trawl fishery in south‐eastern Brazil. This is also the first attempt to relate bycatch/at‐sea mortality in bottom trawling to stranded turtles found along the adjacent coast.
  2. The fishery was monitored from October 2015 to April 2018 through data collected voluntarily by the captains of eight industrial double‐rig trawlers. Two hundred and one sea turtles were captured during 9362 tows (43,657.52 trawling hours), resulting in a catch per unit effort (CPUE) of 0.0025 ± 0.0032 turtles h?1 with a standard net of 30.5 m headrope, with no significant difference between the estimated CPUEs for licensed shrimp and demersal fish trawlers.
  3. Caretta caretta (52.24%) and Lepidochelys olivacea (38.81%) were the most frequently captured species. According to Generalized Linear Models, C. caretta bycatch was significantly higher during winter, at lower latitudes (?24° to ?23°) and higher longitudes (?42° to ?40°), while the L. olivacea bycatch was significantly higher at higher latitudes (?23° to ?21°). The direct initial mortality rate of sea turtles in the shrimp trawlers was 7.65 ± 3.85%. However, none of the dead individuals subsequently released with plastic tags (n = 10) were found stranded on the coast. Mortality was not significantly related to the depth or duration of the trawling.
  4. The results of this study suggest the need for improvements to the current management of the bottom trawl fishery in Brazil, moving from a species‐based to a spatial and seasonal‐based approach. There is also a need to develop turtle excluder devices adapted to local fishing conditions.

The present study examined the possibility of long‐term storage, by cryopreservation in liquid nitrogen, of the sperm of filefish (Thamnaconus septentrionalis). Changes in motility, survival rate, ultrastructure and fertilization rate of the sperm after freezing and thawing were tested. For selection of the immobilizing solution, artificial seawater (ASW) of 250, 350 and 450 mOsmol kg?1 were tested. Sperm motility was significantly inhibited in 350 mOsmol kg?1 ASW, and restored entirely after 100% ASW (1200 mOsmol kg?1) was added. Two cryoprotectants, dimethyl sulphoxide and glycerol, were employed. The sperm was diluted at the ratio of 1:6 with the extenders, and frozen at a freezing rate of ?40°C min?1 to ?100°C after equilibration for 10 min at room temperature, followed by plunging into liquid nitrogen. The highest post‐thawed sperm motility and survival rate were obtained with 5% glycerol. Afterwards, the effect of different freezing rates was examined using 5% glycerol as a cryoprotectant, and the rate of ?30°C min?1 to ?100°C showed the best result.  相似文献

Juveniles of hatchery-reared oysters (Crassostrea belcheri) were grown in a semi-closed recirculation system at water flow rates of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 l min?1. Growth rate increased with increasing water flow rate (P < 0.05) over four weeks. No significant differences in survival were found among water flow rates (P > 0.05). Four stocking density treatments were compared: 4, 8, 12, and 16 juveniles cm?2. Stocking density affected the growth of animals, with higher growth rates obtained at the lower densities. Optimum stocking density based on growth rate was obtained for oysters at 12 juveniles cm?2. Survival of oysters declined with increasing density (P < 0.05) over four weeks. Among the treatments tested, a water flow rate of 4 l min?1 and stocking density of 12 juveniles cm?2 are suitable for nursing hatchery-reared juvenile oysters (C. belcheri) in a semi-closed recirculation system.  相似文献

Following the implementation of an experimental habitat improvement programme in the River Perry, a small lowland river in Shropshire, using low dams, current deflectors and artificial cover structures, marked changes in fish distribution and abundance were recorded in some study sections which appeared to be related to the effects of the improvement structures in recreating natural river features such as the pool-riffle pattern. Over the site as a whole, the population densities of dace and chub increased from means of 325 fish ha?1 and 229 fish ha?1 in the year before habitat improvement to means of 568 fish ha?1 and 313 fish ha?1 in the year following habitat improvement, increases of 75 and 37% respectively. Similarly, standing crops of dace and chub increased from pre-improvement means of 19.7 kg ha?1 and 66.6 kg ha?5 to post-improvement means of 25.8 kg ha?1 and 83.0 kg ha?1, increases of 31 and 25% respectively. Distribution mapping studies revealed considerable fish relocation following habitat improvement, with large concentrations of fish being recorded in the vicinity of the improvement structures. It is concluded that the improvement programme was successful in partially mitigating the adverse effects on the fishery of previous land drainage river channel works.  相似文献
