SUMMARY The extent and causes of sheep losses in the semi-arid Mallee region of north-western Victoria were assessed by interviewing the owners of 79 randomly selected farms running 241 flocks in 1987/88 and 245 flocks in 1988/89. Mean annual losses were higher in ram flocks (21%) than in ewe flocks (7%), in flocks of non-Merino sheep (rams 24%, ewes 11%, weaners 5%) than in Merino (rams 11%, ewes 6%, wethers 4%, weaners 4%) and in ewe flocks 3 or more years old (10%) than in young ewe flocks (3.5%). In flocks where losses exceeded 5%, the causes most often reported by farmers were blowfly strike (especially in Merino sheep and weaners), ewe losses in autumn close to lambing, and heliotrope (Heliotropium europaeum) poisoning. Heliotrope poisoning was considered by the authors to be the main reason for the higher losses in old ewes than in young ewes and in non-Merino sheep than in Merino sheep. Losses of ewes associated with pregnancy and lambing were considered by the authors to be often predisposed by liver damage caused by heliotrope poisoning, and high losses in non-Merino ram flocks were attributed to both heliotrope poisoning and their ability to escape through boundary fences. Reasons for continuing high losses due to enterotoxaemia are discussed. Losses due to gastro-intestinal parasites, footrot and foot abscess were low.  相似文献

Effects of Dorset, Finnsheep, Romanov, Texel, and Montadale breeds for performance as sires were estimated in the initial phase of a comprehensive evaluation of these breeds as contributors to sheep crossbreeding systems. Objectives were to evaluate the effects of ram breed, ewe breed, season of mating, and two-way interactions. Rams from the five breeds were single-sire-mated with ewes from two breed types to produce lambs over a 3-yr period. Ewes were assigned to one of three distinct 35-d mating seasons initiated each year in August, October, and December. A different sample of six rams per breed was used each year across all three seasons, and each ram was penned with ewes of both breeds. Traits evaluated and number of ewe records were conception rate and litter weaning weight per ewe exposed (n = 3,261) and number born, litter birth weight, average birth weight, number weaned, and litter weaning weight per ewe lambing (n = 2,751). Ram breed and ewe breed interacted (P < .01) for conception rate and litter weaning weight per ewe exposed, implicating mating preferences, particularly of Romanov rams. In mixed groups of ewes exposed to Romanov rams, conception rate was 12.7% lower and litter weight weaned was 8.4 kg lower in the ewe breed presumably less preferred for mating by the rams. On a per ewe exposed basis, Romanov-sired litters produced either the largest or the smallest values for litter weaning weight, depending on the breed of ewe. Effects of ram breed on number born and litter birth weight interacted (P < .05) with season of mating. The largest litters within each ram breed were associated with the October mating season. Montadale and Romanov rams sired larger and heavier litters from August matings than from December matings, whereas the opposite was true for Dorset-sired litters. Texel- and Finnsheep-sired litters were similar in size and weight from August and December matings. Breed of ram differences affected per ewe lambing productivity measurements (P < .01). Differences between ram breeds for ewe productivity were noted, with increased number born and improved survival of crossbred progeny to weaning for Romanov-sired litters. These results may have implications for using these ram breeds as sires in different crossbreeding systems. Structured mating systems or the creation of new composite populations involving these breeds could be used to match the resources, environment, and market of specific production situations.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which sexual performance (serving capacity) tests can be used to predict the sexual behavior and reproductive success of rams in the context of pen mating. Standard serving capacity tests were used to select four low (LP) and four high-performing (HP) rams from a population of 94 yearling males. Each selected ram was then exposed to approximately 30 estrus-synchronized ewes for a 9-d period. Ejaculations observed and mounting marks left on ewes confirmed the greater (P less than .001) sexual activity of the HP rams in the field. In addition, ewes exposed to HP rams had a higher lambing percentage, more lambs born, and more live lambs born per ewe. Ram classification was not related (P greater than .60) to the number of lambs born per ewe lambing (prolificacy). It was concluded that serving capacity tests, properly conducted, can be used to predict ram mating performance and thus aid in establishing more efficient ram-to-ewe stocking rates.  相似文献

Multiparous Suffolk and Suffolk-cross ewes were randomly allotted to treatments within breed and year to measure effects of ram exposure, during transition from anestrus to breeding activity, on reproductive performance. Treatments were: 1) ewes joined with two mature vasectomized Rambouillet rams for 15 d before breeding (DC), 2) ewes maintained across a net wire fence from two vasectomized rams for 15 d before breeding (FC) and 3) ewes maintained approximately 400 m away from rams (NC). At the end of the 15 d, all ewes were placed in one pasture and mated to three fertile Suffolk rams during a 34-d breeding season. A total of 96 Suffolk and 177 Suffolk-cross ewes was utilized during the 3-yr experiment. A greater (P less than .05) prebreeding ovulation percentage was observed in DC and FC than in NC ewes. Mating and lambing occurred approximately 6 d earlier for DC or FC ewes than for NC ewes. A similarly designed experiment was conducted using Suffolk and Suffolk-cross ewe lambs allotted to treatments within breed and year to measure effects of ram exposure during the natural breeding season, but prior to breeding. Treatment differences were not detected (P greater than .05) for date of first observed estrus, date of lambing, percentage of ewes lambing in the first 17 d of the lambing season, number of lambs born per ewe lamb exposed or number of lambs born per ewe lamb giving birth.  相似文献

In 1999, among 164 randomly selected Dutch sheep farmers, a questionnaire was carried out to estimate the prevalence of myiasis in sheep and to investigate factors associated with the occurrence of myiasis. The total number of sheep and/or lambs on the reference date 1 August 1999 was 12,200: 5243 ewes, 225 rams, 3393 ewe- and 3339 ram lambs. On 86 (52.4%) of the farms 349 (2.9%) of all sheep and/or lambs contracted myiasis, of which two died. Myiasis was seen significantly more frequently on farms with over 25 ewes compared to smaller farms. Cases of myiasis were detected from April to September, with a peak (47.1%) in August. Occurrence of myiasis was most frequently associated with hot and humid weather and was mainly observed (69.1%) in the area around the tail.Ewes and ewe lambs had significantly more myiasis when compared with rams and ram lambs. There was no relationship with tail docking, with breed, with the time of shearing, with the kind of soil (clay, sand, etc.), with the environment (bush, trees, water, etc.), with the type of treatment (pour on, dipping, spraying), the used insecticides (synthetic pyrethro?ds, diazinon, cyromazin, etc.), the number of preventive treatments, the time of treatment or the number of observations on the herd (once a day, once a week, etc.).  相似文献

In sheep, access to receptive females is affected by dominance relationships. The aim of the first experiment was to determine how the presence of high- or low-ranking rams affects sexual behavior of medium-ranked rams toward non-estrual ewes in pen tests. A complementary objective was to determine whether the presence of 1 or 2 rams has stronger effects. Social rank of 13 rams was determined using the food competition test. The number of courtship behaviors, mounts, and ejaculations was recorded in pen tests with non-estrual restrained ewes. In the first experiment, medium-ranked rams were subjected to 5 tests with: (1) the ewe alone, (2) the ewe and 1 restrained tied high-ranked ram, (3) the ewe and 2 restrained tied high-ranked rams, (4) the ewe and 1 restrained tied low-ranked ram, and (5) the ewe and 2 restrained tied low-ranked rams. The number of high- or low-ranked rams (1 or 2) present in the tests did not affect the results. There were no differences on courtship behaviors, but the number of mounts and mounts with ejaculation was greater when low-ranked rams were present. In a second experiment, it was determined whether the presence of medium- or low-ranked rams stimulates sexual behavior of high-ranked rams. The high-ranked rams were tested with: (1) the ewe alone, (2) the ewe and 1 restrained tied medium-ranked ram, and (3) the ewe and 1 restrained tied low-ranked ram. No differences were recorded in relation to presence of other rams during the tests. It was concluded that the presence of low-ranked rams stimulates sexual behavior of medium-ranked rams toward non-estrual ewes in pen tests. This effect was not related with the number of rams included in the test. The presence of medium- or low-ranked rams did not alter the sexual behavior of high-ranked rams toward non-estrual ewes.  相似文献

Three young Suffolk ram lambs had lesions which rendered them reproductively unsound. One had a unilateral scrotal hernia, detected by palpation, and two had sperm granulomas which were detected by trans-scrotal ultrasonography at 18 to 20 weeks of age, before they could be detected by palpation. Changes in the lesions were monitored ultrasonographically at two-week intervals with a 7.5 MHz linear array transducer. On the day of each examination, semen was collected from the rams with sperm granulomas by using an artificial vagina, and their libido was assessed. Semen could rarely be collected from the third ram. Comparisons were made with similar data obtained from two normal rams. When the rams were 20 to 21 months of age, they were vasectomised on the normal side, so that the influence of the lesions on semen composition and libido could be assessed, and semen was collected and evaluated until they were euthanised at approximately 24 months of age, when the genital system was examined for gross lesions. The sperm granulomas changed in size (one of them increased in size by about 30 times) and echotexture over the 19-month period of the study, whereas the scrotal hernia, which contained omental fat, remained fairly constant. The libido of the two rams with sperm granulomas was comparable with the two normal controls. The total mean (sem) number of sperm in the ejaculates were 1.11 (0.10) x 10(9) and 2.03 (0.17) x 10(9) sperm/ml in the affected rams and 4.11 x 10(9) sperm/ml in the normal rams over the same period; the differences were significant (P<0.05). After unilateral vasectomy, the ejaculates from these two rams contained small numbers of dead spermatozoa, mostly with degenerate heads. Postmortem examination confirmed the gross lesions identified ultrasonographically.  相似文献

A 3-yr study was conducted to comprehensively evaluate columbia, suffolk, usmarc-composite (composite), and texel breeds as terminal sires in an extensive rangeland production system. The objective was to estimate breed-of-ram effects on ewe fertility, prolificacy, and dystocia, and sire breed effects on lamb survival and growth until weaning at approximately 132 d of age. Data were from 22 columbia, 22 composite, 21 suffolk, and 17 texel rams with 957 exposures to 574 adult rambouillet ewes (3- to 7-yr-old at lambing), 908 lambings, and 1,834 lambs. Ram breed did not affect ewe fertility (mean = 94.9%; p = 0.73), total number born per ewe lambing (mean = 2.02 lambs; p = 0.20), number born alive per ewe lambing (mean = 1.90 lambs; p = 0.24), or number weaned per ewe lambing (mean = 1.45 lambs, p = 0.94). Dystocia rates were different (p = 0.01) for ewes mated to columbia (12.2%), composite (13.5%), suffolk (25.7%), and texel rams (31.9%) during 1 yr of the study, but differences among ram breeds were not repeatable (p ≥ 0.38) during the other 2 yr. Suffolk-sired lambs were heavier (p ≥ 0.02) at birth (5.5 kg) and weaning (40.3 kg) than lambs sired by the other breeds, which did not differ (p ≥ 0.34) for birth weight (mean = 5.3 kg). Texel-sired lambs (37.4 kg) were lighter (p ≥ 0.02) at weaning than columbia- (38.8 kg) and composite-sired (38.4 kg) lambs, which did not differ (p = 0.40) for weaning weight. Sire breed effect approached significance (p = 0.06) for lamb survival to weaning; estimated survival probabilities were 0.87 (columbia), 0.89 (composite), 0.93 (suffolk), and 0.86 (texel) for lambs reared by their birth dam. Interaction between sire breeds and birth weight affected (p < 0.001) lamb survival and revealed that lightweight columbia- and suffolk-sired lambs had a greater risk of death than lightweight lambs sired by composite and texel rams, but risk of death did not increase substantially for heavyweight lambs from any of the breeds. When mated to adult rambouillet ewes in an extensive rangeland production system, the use of suffolk rams is warranted to improve preweaning growth of market lambs and is not predicted to affect ewe fertility, ewe prolificacy, dystocia, or lamb survival compared with the other sire breeds we tested.  相似文献

Mating behavior is known to be heritable in several species, but it is not known if selection schemes for ewe reproductive traits affect mating behavior of rams. Therefore, our objectives were to determine if divergent (high vs low index) selection of a female reproductive trait (lambs born divided by age of ewe minus one) affects mating behavior patterns of male offspring during training to service an artificial vagina (AV) in a less than natural setting (Exp. 1) or during serving capacity tests (SCT) in simulated natural mating conditions (Exp. 2). The method for evaluating male mating behavior was a series of serving capacity tests to estimate sexual performance. For Exp. 1, five, 30-min observations were conducted to assess the mating behavior of 29 rams (22 mo old) being trained to service an AV. In Exp. 1, percentages of rams mounting (73 vs 36%) and ejaculating (67 vs 29%) differed (P < 0.05) between rams from high and low Rambouillet ewe selection lines, respectively. In Exp. 2, ram classification consisted of exposing each 22- to 24-mo-old ram (n = 48) to three unrestrained ewes in estrus for 18, 30-min tests. Any ram that had not mounted or ejaculated during SCT was evaluated for sexual orientation in a 30-min preference test in which each ram had access to both restrained estrual ewes and restrained rams. In Exp. 2, there was no difference (P > 0.2) in percentages of rams mounting (92 vs 78%) and ejaculating (88 vs 74%) between rams from high and low Rambouillet ewe selection lines, respectively. There was no difference (P > 0.33) between high and low ewe selection line rams for mounts or ejaculations for 18 SCT. Only one male-oriented ram was identified, which was from the high line. In Exp. 2, six SCT were necessary to obtain 95% reliability in sexual performance scores. Results of these studies indicate that long-term selection of ewes for litter size did not alter ram sexual performance after SCT under simulated natural mating conditions or affect incidence of male-oriented rams. Mating behavior observed during training to service an AV was lower for rams from ewes of the low selection line than for rams from ewes of the high selection line. We concluded that long-term selection for reproductive rate in ewes did not alter mating behavior patterns of male offspring; however, test conditions, such as restrained and unrestrained ewes and number of serving capacity tests, may affect conclusions in studies that evaluate sexual performance of rams.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the effect of the age of rams, used at a standardised ram-to-ewe ratio, on the breeding performance and pregnancy rate of ewe hoggets. METHODS: Ewe hoggets ((1/2) Romney x (1/4) Texel x (1/4) Finnish Landrace; n=582) aged 7-8 months were exposed to nine two-tooth, harnessed, vasectomised teaser rams for a period of 17 days (Days 1-17). The ewe hoggets were then weighed and randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups (on Day 18) and joined with either four ram hoggets not used previously (n=194), four two-tooth rams not used previously (n=196), or four mixed-age mature rams (n=192) that had been used previously to mate mature ewes immediately before breeding with the ewe hoggets. The breeding period was 34 days. Ewe hoggets were identified as having been mated during the first 17 days only, during both 17-day periods, during the second 17 days only, or not mated. All ewe hoggets were scanned for pregnancy using ultrasound, 54 days after the end of the breeding period. RESULTS: Liveweights of ewe hoggets did not differ between treatment groups. More ewe hoggets were mated by the mature rams in the first 17 days than by either ram hoggets or two-tooth rams (p<0.05). However, more of the ewe hoggets mated by mature rams returned to service (failed to conceive), and the percentage of ewe hoggets bred in the first 17 days only or pregnant from a service in the first 17 days did not differ significantly between groups. Fewer of the ewe hoggets joined with ram hoggets were diagnosed as pregnant after 34 days of breeding compared with those joined with either two-tooth or mature rams (p<0.05), as more ewe hoggets failed to be mated at all by ram hoggets compared with those joined with mature rams (p<0.05). There was also a tendency for more ewe hoggets joined with ram hoggets not to be mated at all compared with those joined with two-tooth rams (p=0.07). CONCLUSIONS: Two-tooth rams previously unused and mature rams previously used for mating were a better option than unused ram hoggets to maximise the pregnancy rate of ewe hoggets to a 34-day breeding period. However, further work is required as it was unclear why lower conception rates were observed in ewe hoggets joined with mature rams which had been used previously. As a result, the advantage of using mature rams may have been underestimated.  相似文献

A performance data set from 376 Ripollesa purebred ewes of the experimental flock of the Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona was analyzed using a bivariate Bayesian threshold-linear model. The data set contained 1,598 litter size records and 1,699 days-to-lambing records. The model included the additive genetic effect of each animal and 3 nongenetic sources of variation: ewe age, year of lambing, and the permanent environmental effect characterized by the ewe. The flock was phenotypically selected for litter size since 1986, and replacement ewes and rams were selected from the progeny of the more prolific ewes, which had at least 3 deliveries recorded. The phenotypic trend for litter size was positive, whereas days to lambing followed an unclear pattern. Both traits had low heritabilities; 0.13 for litter size and 0.11 for days to lambing. Response to selection was evaluated through (a) the average breeding value of the ewe lambs chosen annually, and (b) the average breeding value of the overall flock. The first measurement suggested a positive trend for litter size, although it showed important oscillations. On the other hand, the average breeding value for the overall flock showed a stable positive tendency after yr 4 of selection, with estimates clearly different from zero after yr 11 of selection. A significant increase in the incidence of multiple births was observed, with a mode of approximately 10%. The correlated response in days to lambing did not show a significant trend. The effect of year of lambing also positively influenced both litter size and days to lambing, although important oscillations were observed between years. Results indicated that litter size in sheep can be effectively improved through phenotypic selection, even in small flocks; moreover, days to lambing could also be genetically improved, given the estimate obtained for its heritability.  相似文献

Breeding activity (libido), testicular size, testosterone levels and seminal characteristics of 10 DLS adult rams (a population of 1/2 Dorset, 1/4 Leicester and 1/4 Suffolk selected for extended breeding season) were compared with those of 10 adult Suffolk rams. The study lasted 18 mo during which the data were recorded over 30 collection periods. All characteristics varied significantly with the season of the year, being lowest during the summer and highest during the fall. Suffolk rams had higher libido but lower testosterone levels than the DLS rams throughout the study. Testosterone increased earlier and decreased later in the breeding season in DLS compared with Suffolk rams, the interaction breed X period being significant. Testosterone concentration was highly associated with testicular size and libido, accounting for 65 and 28% of the variation in the Suffolk and 37 and 18% in the DLS rams, respectively. Seminal output and quality (motility and percentage of live spermatozoa) were highest in October and November and lowest in April and May. Rams within breeds differed significantly in the seminal characteristics studied. Results of the study showed that selecting the DLS ewes for extended breeding season may have altered the reproductive performance of the rams of that breed.  相似文献

Performance of three tropical hair sheep breeds.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The performance of three hair sheep breeds (Brazilian Somali, Morada Nova, and Santa Ines) was evaluated in the production environment of northeastern Brazil. Data from a total of 524 lambs sired by 21 rams and out of 190 ewes were analyzed. These data were collected from 1980 to 1983 at Sobral, Brazil from an experiment designed to compare performance of the three breeds. The traits included weights of lambs at birth, weaning, 8 mo, 10 mo, and yearling ages and ewe characters of weight at lambing (EWT), total lamb weight born (LWB), total lamb weight weaned (LWW), and prolificacy rate (PR). Differences (P < .01) among breeds were found for all characters. The Brazilian Somali, the smallest and slowest-gaining breed, was less sensitive to yearly variation than were the other breeds. The Santa Ines, the largest and fastest-gaining breed, was superior in LWB and LWW per ewe lambing. Averaged over the 4-yr period, the Morada Nova had the highest PR (1.82), and the Brazilian Somali and Santa Ines had similar PR (1.39 and 1.31, respectively). Environmental effects on PR due to yearly rainfall quantity and distribution pattern influenced lamb growth up to weaning and ewe reproduction performance. Breed x year (P < .05) interaction effects on PR were largely attributable to the Somali breed's exhibiting higher PR than the Santa Ines and Morada Nova breeds during the relatively wet years of 1981 and 1982.  相似文献

Four hundred seventy-four ewe lambs (5 to 6 mo of age) were assigned within breed to two postweaning feed treatments; 1 = alfalfa pellets ad libitum and 2 = alfalfa pellets plus 20% barley or wheat ad libitum. Ten days prior to the start of breeding, approximately one-half of the ewe lambs within each feed treatment were treated with a single injection of 2.5 mg of estradiol valerate and 1.5 mg of norgestomet and implanted with 3 mg of norgestomet for 8 d. At the start of breeding, fertile Suffolk rams were fitted with marking harnesses and penned with ewe lambs; evidence of estrus and breeding was determined on a weekly basis by visual examination for breeding marks. In the second year of the study, 7 to 13 d after recording estrous activity, all marked ewe lambs were bled; and blood was assayed for progesterone. In 1983, 60% of the ewe lambs showed estrus and 11% lambed compared with 48% exhibiting estrus and 30% lambing in 1984 (P less than .01). More (P less than .01) ewe lambs on feed treatment 1 displayed estrus, but more (P less than .05) lambed in the feed treatment 2 group. Steroid treatment resulted in more (P less than .01) ewe lambs showing estrus but fewer lambing (P less than .01). Examination of progesterone concentrations for evidence of ovulation and corpus luteum development indicated that treatment with steroids caused a large percentage of ewe lambs to exhibit estrus. However, many of these failed to develop a corpus luteum and become pregnant.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Rheotaxis of sperm using a microfluidic device was explored in human, mice and bull. However, the rheotaxis of ram sperm and its role in fertility are unknown. Herein, we described the sperm rheotaxis in ram using microfluidic devices and focused on rheotaxis as potential markers of in vivo fertility. Computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) with controlled flow velocity was used to explore the kinematic parameters of sperm, total motility and positive rheotaxis (PR). The percentage of PR was defined as the number of PR sperm cells over the number of motile sperm cells. Then, according to the percentage of PR sperm, rams were classified into two groups; sperm with ≥40% PR and <40% PR, although the two ram groups showed similar total motility and kinematic values of sperm evaluated by CASA (p > .05). Two groups of rams mated one hundred thirty ewes naturally (10 ewes/ram). In the results, the pregnancy rate was higher in ≥40% PR (94.4%) than in <40% PR (42.5%, p < .05) after natural mating. Besides, the pregnancy loss was higher in <40% PR (33.3%) than in >40% PR group (8.1%, p < .05). In conclusion, the PR examination in semen can contribute to evaluate the reproductive performance of ram that will provide valuable insights into the semen evaluation.  相似文献

Six ewe genotypes, generated by mating Coopworth (C), Polypay (P), and Suffolk (S) rams to P and Coopworth-type (Ct) ewes, were exposed to Hampshire rams for spring lambing from 1987 through 1990. Data from 1,013 exposures and 973 resultant lambings were used to analyze reproductive traits and cumulative ewe productivity over 4 yr. Ewe body and fleece weights were also analyzed. Ewes from S sires weaned the heaviest lambs and ewes from P sires weaned the largest number of lambs, resulting in similar total weight of lamb weaned per ewe mated. Coopworth-sired ewes weaned the least total weight of lamb per ewe mated. Ewes weaning twins produced 54% more total litter weight per ewe than those weaning singles. Annual ewe survival averaged 95%, ranging from 93% for S x P and C x P ewes to 97% for P x Ct and C x Ct ewes. When cumulative number and weight of lamb produced was assessed on the basis of all ewes starting the trial, P-sired ewes were highest, followed in order by daughters of S and C sires. Suffolk-sired ewes (67 kg) were 13% heavier than daughters of P rams and 19% heavier than daughters of C rams. Adjustment of lamb production for ewe metabolic body size resulted in C-sired ewes being more efficient than the heavier S-sired ewes. Coopworth-sired ewes produced 32% more wool than ewes sired by the other two breeds. Differences in wool production between ewes weaning one or two lambs were small.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A resource population of ewes derived from Dorset and Romanov grandparents was generated over 5 yr to provide genotypic and phenotypic data to estimate effects of each callipyge genotype on component traits of reproduction. Effects on ovulation rate were estimated from data recorded by examination of ovaries from serially slaughtered ewe lambs (n = 174) born in 1994 and 1995. Productivity and longevity through 5 yr of age were recorded on a total of 265 F2 ewes produced in 1996 through 1998. Number of lambs born, birth weights, and weaning weights of lambs were calculated for each ewe. Weaning weight was recorded for each lamb and adjusted for age to 56 and 32 d for dam- and nursery-reared lambs, respectively. Longevity was determined as a binary trait based on the presence or absence of the ewe in the breeding flock at 5 yr of age. Ewes generated 937 records for breeding weight and 925 records for conception rate, which was determined on ewes exposed and still present at the start of each lambing season. Seven hundred seventeen records were analyzed for traits based on the number of ewes lambing. Genotypes for the causative callipyge mutation were determined using a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry assay. Each ewe was classified into 1 of 4 genotypes; NMatNPat, NMatCPat, CMatNPat, or CMatCPat, where N represents wild type and C represents the mutant allele. The mean ovulation rate of the ewe lambs genotyped NMatNPat was greater (P < 0.02) than that exhibited by NMatCPat; however, the estimated difference of 0.25 ovum in the ewe lambs did not affect the number born. The live weight of NMatCPat ewes at breeding was 2.5 kg less than that of other genotypes (P < 0.01). The callipyge genotype class did not significantly affect conception rates, fecundity, maternal ability, or ewe longevity. Maintaining a ewe flock to produce homozygous mutant rams for use in terminal sire mating systems presents no unusual problems from a reproduction standpoint.  相似文献

Clinical examination of 31 rams with evidence of Actinobacillus seminis infection revealed 15 cases with marked lesions of the scrotal contents, two cases with very mild lesions, one with testicular atrophy but no abnormality of the epididymides, and another 13 without any palpable abnormalities of the genitalia. The rams were from a Border Leicester flock and included 27 un-mated rams from 6 to 12 months old. Histological examinations of affected epididymides showed a mixed purulent and non-purulent inflammation, with cystic hyperplasia of the ductus epididymis. Interstitial fibrosis and spermatic granulomas were seen in chronic lesions. Bilateral testicular atrophy and seminal degeneration were found in the nine rams that were autopsied. The clinical and pathological features of the disease are similar to those of ovine brucellosis. A pyelonephritis of unknown significance was found in four of the nine rams examined.  相似文献

Contact with oestrual ewes induces an increase in LH and testosterone concentrations in rams. LH provokes an increase in testicular capillary permeability in rodents and an increase in testicular fluid in rams. Therefore, the objectives of the present experiment were to determine whether contact with oestrual ewes, including courtship and mating, induces an increase in testicular fluid content and scrotal temperature in rams. During the breeding season, after 2 weeks isolated from females, a total of 18 tests were performed using one ram with one ewe. The rams were allowed to court and mate the ewes during 20 min. Testosterone blood concentrations were measured by RIA from blood samples taken before and immediately after each test. Rectal, scrotal surface and anal skin temperatures were measured before the test, at the end, and 30 min later. At the same moments, ultrasonographic examinations of the testes were performed. Testosterone concentrations increased after the tests (p = 0.016), and ultrasound images were darker at the end of the tests and 30 min later (p < 0.0001). Rectal, anal skin and scrotal temperatures increased at the end of the test, but decreased 30 min later to initials values. The stimulus of oestrual ewes determined an increase in testosterone secretion, which was associated with an increase in testicular fluid content. Fluid content remained increased at least for 30 min after the end of the ram-ewe contact. Contact with oestrual ewes triggered an increase in testicular fluid that remained higher after the end of the test.  相似文献

A field trial was performed in order to evaluate the effect on fertility of different straw types, freezing protocols (one- or two-step) and thawing procedures (35°C and 70°C) using frozen–thawed ram semen. A total of 791 Norwegian Crossbred ewes were artificially inseminated during natural oestrus with semen collected from nine mature and proven Norwegian Crossbred rams. A milk-based extender was used for dilution. The ewes were allocated into one of the following three groups based on the different straw types and thawing temperatures: medium straw (0.5 ml) thawed at 35°C for 20 s (Med35), medium straw thawed at 70°C for 8 s (Med70) and mini straw (0.25 ml) thawed at 35°C for 15 s (Mini35). The semen to be frozen in mini straws was re-concentrated by centrifugation. Sperm number in each insemination dose was approximately 200 × 106 spermatozoa. The fertility results [as 25-day non-return rate (NRR)] for Med35, Med70 and Mini35 were 53.1%, 50.8% and 58.3%, respectively, and the lambing rates 49.8%, 46.8% and 53.8%, respectively. No significant main effects were seen for straw type/thawing temperature (p = 0.17), ram (p = 0.06) or age of the ewe (p = 0.18) on NRR or lambing rates (p = 0.19, p = 0.16 and p = 0.27, respectively). Both NRR and lambing rate differed significantly among farms (p < 0.0001).  相似文献
