Abstract

The effect of additional iron (Fe) on arsenic (As) induced chlorosis in barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Minorimugi) was investigated. The treatments were: (1) 0?μmol?L?1 As?+?10?μmol?L?1 Fe3+ (control), (2) 33.5?μmol?L?1 As?+?10?μmol?L?1 Fe3+ (As-treated) and (3) 33.5?μmol?L?1 As?+?50?μmol?L?1 Fe3+ (additional-Fe3+) for 14?days. Arsenic and Fe3+ were added as sodium-meta arsenite (NaAsO2) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-Fe3+, respectively. Chlorosis in fully developed young leaves was observed in the As-treated plants. The chlorophyll index and the Fe concentration decreased in shoots of the As-treated plants compared with the control plants. Arsenic reduced the concentration of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc and copper. The additional-Fe3+ treatment increased the chlorophyll index in plants compared with the As-treated plants. Among the elements, Fe concentration and accumulation specifically increased in the shoots of additional-Fe3+ plants compared with As-treated plants, indicating that As-induced chlorosis was Fe-chlorosis. Arsenic and Fe were mostly concentrated in the roots of the As-treated plants. Despite inducing chlorosis in the As-treated plants, phytosiderophores (PS) accumulation in the roots and release from the roots did not increase, rather PS accumulation decreased, indicating that As toxicity hindered PS production in the roots. The PS accumulation in the roots was further reduced in the additional-Fe3+ treatment.  相似文献

Abstract

A hydroponic experiment was conducted to observe the effect of arsenic (As) on a number of physiological and mineralogical properties of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Akihikari) seedlings. Seedlings were treated with 0, 6.7, 13.4 and 26.8 µmol L?1 As (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg As L?1) for 14 days in a greenhouse. Shoot dry matter yield decreased by 23, 56 and 64%; however, the values for roots were 15, 35 and 42% for the 6.7, 13.4 and 26.8 µmol L?1 As treatments, respectively. Shoot height decreased by 11, 35 and 43%, while that of the roots decreased by 6, 11 and 33%, respectively. These results indicated that the shoot was more sensitive to As than the root in rice. Leaf number and width of leaf blade also decreased with As toxicity. Arsenic toxicity induced chlorosis symptoms in the youngest leaves of rice seedlings by decreasing chlorophyll content. Concentrations and accumulations of K, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu decreased significantly in shoots in the 26.8 µmol L?1 As treatment. However, the concentration of P increased in shoots at 6.7 and 13.4 µmol L?1 As levels, indicating a cooperative rather than antagonistic relationship. Arsenic and Fe concentration increased in roots at higher As treatments. Arsenic translocation (%) decreased in the 13.4 and 26.8 µmol L?1 As treatments compared with the 6.7 µmol L?1 As treatment. Arsenic and Fe were mostly concentrated in the roots of rice seedlings, assuming co-existence of these two elements. Roots contained an almost 8–16-fold higher As concentration than shoots in plants in the As treatments. Considering the concentration of Mn, Zn and Cu, it was suggested that chlorosis resulted from Fe deficiency induced by As and not heavy-metal-induced Fe deficiency.  相似文献

Abstract

Five dry bean cultivars (Coco blanc, Striker, ARA14, SVM29‐21, and BAT477) were evaluated for their resistance to iron deficiency on the basis of chlorosis symptoms, plant growth, capacity to acidify the external medium and the root‐associated Fe3+‐reduction activity. Plants were grown in nutrient solution supplied or not with iron, 45 µM Fe(III)EDTA. For all cultivars, plants subjected to iron starvation exhibited Fe‐chlorosis. These symptoms were more severe and more precocious in BAT477 and Coco blanc than in the others cultivars. An important acidification of the culture medium was observed between the 4th and the 8th days of iron starvation in Striker, SVM29‐21 and, particularly, ARA14 plants. However, all Fe‐sufficient plants increased the nutrient solution pH. This capacity of acidification appeared more clearly when protons extrusion was measured in 10 mM KCl + 1 mM CaCl2. The above genotypic differences were maintained: ARA14 showed the higher acidification followed by Coco blanc and BAT477. Iron deficiency led also to an increase of the root‐associated Fe(III)‐reductase activity in all lines. However, genotypic differences were observed: Striker shows the highest capacity of iron reduction under Fe deficiency condition.  相似文献

In a companion paper (10), varieties of four plant species [two monocotyledons (oats and corn) and two dicotyledons (soybeans and tomato)] were shown to differ widely in their ability to respond to Fe‐stress. The ability of the more Fe‐efficient varieties was manifested by a lowering of the pH of the ambient medium of the root and/or by loss of reductants from the root. Both effects can enhance uptake of Fe by the roots, since Fe is taken up primarily, if not entirely, as Fe2+ ions. Thus, a given stressed plant has a means, under some degree of metabolic control, for modifying the root environment and, thereby, alleviating its chlorotic condition.

The present investigation deals with environmental factors, particularly chemical inhibitors, modifying the effectiveness of the stress response. Without inhibitors, excised root samples of the four species exhibited a wide range of abilities to reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+. Roots of the dicotyledonous species reduced about twice as much Fe3+ as did equal weights of the monocotyledonous species. Iron‐efficient tomato, soybean, and oat roots reduced more Fe3+ than did roots of the Fe‐inefficient varieties. The two corn varieties were about equal in their effectiveness.

Comparable samples of roots were also exposed to chemicals that induce or aggravate Fe chlorosis. Those found to be very effective inhibitors of Fe3+ reduction by the roots included: hydroxide, orthophosphate, pyrophosphate, Cu2+ and Ni2+. Other ions (includ ing Mn2+, Zn2+ and molybdate) and ethyl ammonium phosphate also inhibited Fe3+ reduction but to a lesser degree. Citrate, however, enhanced Fe3+ reduction. The degree of inhibition or enhancement differed for each of the varieties. In general, the Fe‐efficient plants were best able to reduce Fe3+ in spite of the inhibitory influence of the imposed treatments. Thus, our findings indicated that inhibition of the Fe3+ ‐reduction process at, or near, the periphery of the root is an apparent cause of Fe chlorosis.  相似文献

Abstract

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is susceptible to iron (Fe) chlorosis, however, plant analysis diagnostic criteria are lacking for determining the intensity of chlorosis in this crop. As total Fe content is a misleading index of Fe nutritional status of plants, determination of physiologically active Fe fraction (Fe2+) is suggested for the purpose. In a nutrient indexing survey of the chlorosis‐affected peanut crop grown in the rainfed Potohar plateau of Pakistan, o‐phenanthroline extractable Fe2+ concentration in plants decreased with increasing severity of chlorosis and thus proved an effective technique for determining the intensity of Fe chlorosis. Green plants contained 40.1 to 67.3 mg Fe2+/kg, mildly chlorotic 32.1 to 40.0 mg Fe2+/kg, moderately chlorotic 28.0 to 32.0 mg Fe2+/kg, and severely chlorotic <28.0 mg Fe2+/kg. The minimum Fe2+ requirement in green plants was estimated to be 40 mg/kg on dry weight basis. In rainfed field experiments on a calcareous Typic Hapludalfs soil, foliar sprays of 1% solution of sequestrene (NaFeEDDHA) proved superior to the foliar sprays of 0.5% FeSO4.7H2O in correcting Fe chlorosis in two cultivars of peanut. Maximum increase in pod yield with sequestrene was 42% in cv. BARD‐92 and 27% in cv. BARD‐699 over the respective control yields. Ferrous concentration in plants increased with both the Fe sources, however, a substantial increase was recorded only with sequestrene. As peanut is a low‐input high‐risk rainfed crop, correction of Fe chlorosis by using sequestrene may not be economically feasible. Thus, development and/or screening of peanut varieties tolerant to Fe chlorosis is suggested by employing Fe2+ analysis technique.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Methane is a greenhouse gas, mainly generated from paddy fields and lakes by methanogens using hydrogen and acetic acid as substrates. In anaerobic environments with adequate Fe3+, iron-reducing microorganisms utilize these substrates, thus suppressing methane generation. We promoted Fe2+ oxidation to Fe3+ by physically stirring paddy soil and using a chelating agent (nitrilotriacetic acid; NTA) to evaluate the feasibility of the suppression of methane generation using Fe3+-reducing bacteria. Under anaerobic conditions, Fe3+ reduction to Fe2+ began immediately in the slurry made by adding water into air-dried paddy soil. Methane generation began on the 6th day when most Fe3+ was reduced. Under anaerobic conditions for 10 days followed by aerobic conditions, Fe2+ oxidation hardly progressed under static conditions. On stirring the slurry, Fe2+ oxidation progressed over 12 h (67% Fe2+ oxidized to Fe3+). When NTA was added under anaerobic conditions followed by stirring under aerobic conditions, Fe2+ oxidation was promoted further. The idea of physical stirring of paddy soil in the actual environment was derived from the effects of paddy soil stirring by ducks in interrelated rice–duck farming. In such farming, paddy soil contains more Fe3+ in its surface water compared with normal farming, resulting in suppressed methane generation.  相似文献

Abstract

Hydroponically grown barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Minorimugi) under iron-deficient (–Fe) and high phosphorus (P) conditions (500 µmol L?1) showed Fe chlorosis and lower growth compared with plants grown in –Fe and low P conditions (50, 5 and 0.5 µmol L?1). To understand the physiological role of P in regulating the growth of plants in –Fe medium, we carried out an Fe feeding experiment using four P levels (500, 50, 5 and 0.5 µmol L?1) and phytosiderophores (PS), mugineic acid. Our results suggest that plants grown in a high P medium had higher absorption activity of 59Fe compared with plants grown in low P media, irrespective of the presence or absence of added PS. Translocation of 59Fe from roots to shoots was not affected by the P level. The relative translocation rate of 59Fe increased with decreasing levels of P in the medium. In general, the addition of PS enhanced the absorption of 59Fe and its translocation. Taken together these results suggest that the lower relative translocation rate of Fe in high P plants may be induced by the physiological inactivation of Fe in the roots, and the higher absorption activity of Fe in high P conditions possibly results from the response of barley plants to Fe deficiency.  相似文献

Tumorous crown gall tissue induced on the stems of sunflower (Helianthus annus L. cv. Mammoth Russian) plants by the soil bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens strongly reduced Fe3+ to Fe2+ as evidenced by the formation of Fe2+ BPDS complex compared to surrounding “normal” stem tissue. Tumorous tissue contained significantly more Fe, Cu, K, and P, and less Zn and Mg than the nontumorous stem tissue. The reducing environment of the tumorous tissue appears to affect the general nutrition and growth of this tissue.  相似文献

Abstract

To clarify the mechanism of Magnesium (Mg) in alleviating cadmium (Cd) phytotoxicity, Japanese mustard spinach (Brassica rapa L. var. pervirdis) was grown for 10 days after treatment in hydroponics in a growth chamber under natural light. The treatments were: (1) nutrient solution alone (Control), (2) 10 mmol L?1 Mg (High-Mg), (3) 2.5 µmol L?1 Cd (Cd-toxic), (4) 2.5 µmol L?1 Cd plus 10 mmol L?1 Mg (Mg-alleviated). The Cd-toxic treatment showed substantial growth retardation and chlorosis of young leaves, such symptoms were not observed in Mg-alleviated plants. Magnesium-alleviated plants showed higher shoot growth, more than twofold, and decreased shoot Cd concentration, approximately 40%, compared with Cd-toxic plants. This increase in shoot growth and simultaneous decrease in shoot Cd concentration may explain the alleviation of Cd toxicity with Mg in Japanese mustard spinach. In Cd-toxic plants, concentrations of K in shoots and Zn in both shoots and roots increased compared with the other three treatments. Concentrations and accumulations of Fe and Mn in shoots decreased significantly in the Cd-treated (Cd-toxic and Mg-alleviated) plants compared with the control and High-Mg plants. Thus, the application of high amounts of Mg in the nutrient solution can alleviate Cd toxicity in plants.  相似文献

Cool white fluorescent (CWF) light reduces Fe3+ to Fe2+ while low pressure sodium (LPS) light does not. Cotton plants grown under CWF light are green, while those yrown under LPS light develop a chlorosis very similar to the chlorosis that develops when the plants are deficient in iron (Fe). It could be that CWF light (which has ultra violet) makes iron more available for plant use by maintaining more Fe2+ in the plant. Two of the factors commonly induced by Fe‐stress in dicotyledonous plants‐‐hydroyen ions and reductants released by the roots‐‐were measured as indicators of the Fe‐deficiency stress response mechanism in M8 cotton.

The plants were grown under LPS and CWF light in nutrient solutions containing either NO3‐N or NH4‐N as the source of nitrogen, and also in a fertilized alkaline soil. Leaf chlorophyll concentration varied significantly in plants grown under the two light sources as follows: CWF+Fe > LPS+Fe > CWF‐Fe ≥ LPS‐Fe. The leaf nitrate and root Fe concentrations were significantly greater and leaf Fe was generally lower in plants grown under LPS than CWF light. Hydrogen ions were extruded by Fe‐deficiency stressed roots grown under either LPS or CWF light, but “reductants”; were extruded only by the plants grown under CWF light. In tests demonstrating the ability of light to reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ in solutions, enough ultra violet penetrated the chlorotic leaf of LPS yrown plants to reduce some Fe3+ in a beaker below, but no reduction was evident through a yreen CWF grown leaf.

The chlorosis that developed in these cotton plants appeared to be induced by a response to the source of liyht and not by the fertilizer added. It seems possible that ultra violet liyht could affect the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ in leaves and thus control the availability of this iron to biological systems requiring iron in the plant.  相似文献

Nanofertilizers, which supply nutrients to the plant, are used to replace conventional fertilizers. Iron (Fe) is one of the essential elements for plant growth and plays an important role in the photosynthetic reactions. To study the effects of nano-iron fertilizer on Catharanthus roseus, plants were treated with different concentrations (0, 5 10 20, 30, and 40 mM) of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3) for 70 days. Fe2O3 nanoparticles increased growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments, and total protein contents in the treated plants significantly. The maximum amounts of growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments, and protein contents were obtained with 30 µM Fe2O3 and minimum values of these parameters were found with 0 µM Fe2O3. The highest value of total alkaloid content was obtained in 0 µM Fe2O3 and the lowest value was observed in control plants. Iron oxide nanoparticles increased potassium, phosphorus, and iron absorption but did not show a significant effect on sodium content.  相似文献

In growth chambers, cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. genetic selection ‘M8') was grown in a synthetic growth medium under four light regimes: low pressure sodium (LPS), LPS + Incandescent (Inc), cool white fluorescent (CWF) and CWF + Inc lamps at 22 C under LPS lamps. Less chlorosis developed at 26 C than at 22 C and less under LPS + Inc than under LPS lamps. All plants were green under CWF and CWF + Inc light. Green and chlorotic plant tissue contained about the same concentrations of Fe. The proposed hypothesis was that chlorotic tissue’ contained less Fe2+ than green tissue. Chlorotic leaves treated with FeSO4 turned a green color. Enough CWF + Inc light passed through an intact leaf to reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ in vitro. Also in vitro, Fe3+ was reduced by CWF, by Inc, but not by LPS light. The amount of Fe3+ reduced during an illumination period was directly proportional to the quantity of light used. In vitro, citrate and malate enhanced Fe3+ reduction, whereas phosphate, pyrophosphate, OH, Cu2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, and Fall inhibited Fe3+ reduction by light. Orthophosphate was about 8 times as effective as organic P in decreasing Fe3+ reduction. Citrate largely alleviated the inhibitory effects of Pi and pH (up to pH 6). The data also provide a possible explanation of a role for many of the elements known to induce or aggravate Fe chlorosis (inhibit Fe3+ reduction). Quantity and quality of light apparently play key roles in plant growth as related to reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ in plant tops.  相似文献

The importance of molybdenum (Mo) for plant growth is disproportionate with respect to the absolute amounts required by most plants. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cv. K-75 plants were raised in refined sand in glasshouse at graded levels from 0.002 to 1 µM for 100 days. Mo deficiency symptoms appeared as interveinal chlorosis of middle and old leaves. Compared with the control (0.2 µM Mo), dry matter, yield and seed protein decreased at low and excess Mo. The concentration of Mo in leaves and seed as well as the activity of nitrate reductase (NR) increased with an increase in Mo supply. The activities of antioxidative enzymes stimulate at both low and excess Mo supply. Low and excess Mo decreased the lipid peroxidation status in chickpea leaves, suggesting its antiperoxidative nature. The values of deficiency, threshold of deficiency and threshold of toxicity of Mo were, respectively, 0.38, 1.2 and 15 µg g?1 in leaves of chickpea.  相似文献

Black gram (Vigna mungo L.) var. Shyam plants were raised in refined sand at four levels of molybdenum (Mo), i.e., low (0.002 µM) to excess (2 µM) for 70 days. The molybdenum deficiency symptoms appeared as interveinal chlorosis of young and middle leaves. Compared to control (0.2 µM Mo), total dry matter, seed yield and seed protein decreased at low and excess Mo. The concentration of Mo in leaves and seed as well as activity of nitrate reductase increased with an increase in Mo supply. Low and excess Mo deteriorated the quality of seeds by lowering the content of starch, sugars, protein, and nitrogen and increasing electrical conductivity of seed leachate. Molybdenum deficiency and excess both resulted in production of lightweight immature seeds, poor in vigor and germination potential. The values of sufficiency and threshold of toxicity in leaves were 0.078 and 2.15 µg Mo g?1 dry matter of black gram.  相似文献

In comparison studies (11, 12), monocotyledonous corn (Zea mays L.) and oats (Avena byzantina C. Koch) did not respond to Fe stress as effectively nor to the same degree as the dicotyledonous soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) or tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Both the Fe‐inefficient and Fe‐efficient corn and oats developed Fe chlorosis; the Fe‐efficient dicotyledonous plants were green. In the present study, the method of inducing Fe stress was changed to make it less severe. Instead of using only NO3‐N and no Fe to induce Fe stress (11, 12), both NH4‐N and NO3‐N were used along with varied concentrations of Fe. Iron stress was induced with BPDS (4,7‐diphenyl‐l, 10‐phenan‐throline disulfonic acid) and phosphate; both competed with the plant for Fe. Phosphate also inhibits reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ (12). This method of inducing Fe stress in the plants was less severe than using only NO3‐N and no Fe in the nutrient solutions and we were able to measure a difference in Fe‐stress response for all four plant species (Fe‐inefficient and Fe‐efficient). At the lower Fe treatments, the roots of Fe‐efficient plants usually reduced more Fe3+ to Fe2+ than did the roots of Fe‐inefficient plants. The ‘inefficient’ ys1 corn and TAM 0–312 oat roots did not compete with BPDS or phosphate for Fe as effectively as did the ‘efficient’ WF9 corn and Coker 227 oat roots. The same type mechanism for solubilization, absorption, and transport of Fe seems to function in both monocotyledenous and dicotyledenous plants but it is more effective and more readily detected in the dicot than in the monocot plants. The reactions involved in reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ seemed to be confined inside or at the root surface for the inefficient genotypes; the efficient genotypes alter the ambient medium to a greater degree.  相似文献

Abstract

Root and leaf ferric chelate reductase (FCR) activity in Annona glabra L. (pond apple), native to subtropical wetland habitats and Annona muricata L. (soursop), native to nonwetland tropical habitats, was determined under iron (Fe)-sufficient and Fe-deficient conditions. One-year-old seedlings of each species were grown with 2, 22.5, or 45 µM Fe in a nutrient solution. The degree of tolerance of Fe deficiency was evaluated by determining root and leaf FCR activity, leaf chlorophyll index, Fe concentration in recently mature leaves, and plant growth. Root FCR activity was generally lower in soursop than in pond apple. Eighty days after plants were put in nutrient solutions, leaf FCR activity of each species was lower in plants grown with low Fe concentrations (2 µM) than in plants grown with high (22.5 or 45 µM) Fe concentrations in the nutrient solution. Leaves of pond apple grown without Fe became chlorotic within 6 weeks. The Fe level in the nutrient solution had no effect on fresh and dry weights of soursop. Lack of Fe decreased the leaf chlorophyll index and Fe concentration in recently matured leaves less in soursop than in pond apple. The rapid development of leaf chlorosis in low Fe conditions and low root and leaf FCR activities of pond apple are probably related to its native origin in wetland areas, where there is sufficient soluble Fe for adequate plant growth and development. The higher leaf FCR activity and slower growth rate of soursop compared to pond apple may explain why soursop did not exhibit leaf chlorosis even under low Fe conditions.  相似文献

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants grown under low pressure sodium lamps (LPS) developed chlorosis which was similar in appearance to iron‐stress induced chlorosis, while plants under cool white fluorescent lamps (CWF) at the same level of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) developed normally. These illumination sources differ in spectral irradiance; CWF lamps emit ultra violet (UV), whereas LPS lamps do not. Ultraviolet radiation is capable of reducing Fe3+ to Fe2+ through a chlorotic leaf which may be important in establishing an active iron fraction in the leaf. Root reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ was lacking in Fe‐stressed cotton under LPS light, but was present under CWF light. Net photosynthesis, photosynthetic electron transport, and leaf chlorophyll content were lower under LPS than CWF light in most of the growing media studies (soil or solutions with nitrate‐ or ammonium‐nitrogen supplied). Chloroplast ultrastructure and leaf thickness were also altered by LPS irradiance. Electron microscopic studies with plants grown in nutrient solutions for 4 weeks suggested that chioroplastic granal disorganization was more directly associated with diminished iron supplies than with light source. However, plants grown in soil for 6 weeks under LPS light had granal disorganization similar to that found in iron‐stressed plants. These studies suggest an important role for UV radiation in influencing the activity of iron in plants.  相似文献

Abstract

Wheat grown on cadmium (Cd)‐uncontaminated soils can still potentially translocate unacceptable levels of Cd to grain. The effect of zinc (Zn) and Cd levels on Cd uptake and translocation in “Grandin” hard red spring wheat (HRS‐wheat) (Triticum aestivum L.) was investigated using a double chelator‐buffered nutrient solution [EGTA used to buffer Cd, Zn, copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni); and Ferrozine (FZ) used to buffer Fe2+]. In the Zn level series of treatments, Cd2+ activity was held constant at 10?10.7 M, and the Zn2+ activity was varied from 10?7.6 to 10?5.2 M. As Zn2+ activity increased, the translocation of Cd to the shoots decreased. The shoot : root Cd concentration ratio decreased from 0.20 to 0.03 as pZn2+ went from 7.6 to 5.2, indicating that adequate to high levels of Zn are effective in reducing Cd translocation to the shoots of “Grandin” HRS‐wheat. In the Cd series, the Zn activity was at 10?6.6 M, while Cd activity was increased from 10?10.7 to 10?9.2 M. High levels of Cd did not significantly affect the uptake and translocation of Zn in the roots and shoots. While at pCd2+ of 9.2, the root and shoot Cd concentrations significantly increased, there was not a significant increase in the shoot : root Cd ratio. This would indicate that even at high Cd2+ activities, Zn is effective in regulating Cd uptake and translocation in “Grandin” HRS‐wheat.  相似文献

Sodium carbonate added to nutrient solution in sand culture depressed the growth of tomatoes both by the influence of high pH and HCO3? causing chlorosis and by the effect of Na+. Foliar sprays of iron and manganese removed chlorosis and increased growth but did not remove the effect of Na. In a sandy soil Na2CO3 did not cause chlorosis but Na+ depressed yield. Abstract

Uptake of arsenic (As) and its distribution in Chinese Brake fern (Pteris vittata L.), an As hyperaccumulator, and Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata L.), a nonhyperaccumulator, in the presence of phosphorus (P), were characterized by employing a hydroponic experiment with a complete three-factorial design. Two levels of As (100 and 1000 µM) and four levels of P (0, 100, 500, and 1000 µM) were used in this study. Arsenic uptake rates on the basis of root fresh weight for the two ferns were similar at low As concentration (100 µM). At high As concentration (1000 µM), however, As uptake rates (373–987 nmol g?1 f wt h?1) of P. vittata were significantly greater than those of N. exaltata (164–459 nmol g?1 f wt h?1). In both ferns, addition of P reduced their As uptake rate as well as accumulation. Pteris vittata had a greater As TF (Translocation factor = concentration ratio of fronds to roots) than N. exaltata. On the contrary, N. exaltata displayed a greater P TF than P. vittata. As a result, high P/As ratio was observed in the roots of P. vittata, whereas high P/As ratio was observed in the fronds of N. exaltata. The study illustrated that As hyperaccumulation by P. vittata may be facilitated by its high As influx rate and its high molar P/As ratio in the roots resulting from both high As TF and low P TF.  相似文献
