The relationship between water quality, weather, lunar phase and daily changes in crawfish (Proearnbums clurkii) catch per unit effort (CPUE) was determined in five experimental crawfish ponds from March through May, 1984 and 1985. Air and water temperatures, solar radiation, dissolved oxygen, wind velocity, barometric pressure, precipitation and lunar phase were recorded daily during the harvesting phase of the study. Crawfish CPUE (g/trap/24 h) was significantly correlated with water temperature, dissolved oxygen, lunar phase, barometric pressure, wind velocity and the relative density of harvestable size crawfish. Most statistically significant environmental or climatological variables explained less than 20% total daily variation in crawfish CPUE. The nine environmental variables were reduced to four factors—temperature-harvestable crawfish, cold fronts, rain showers, and lunar phase—with principal-components analysis. Eighty-five percent of the variation in daily crawfish catch was attributed to water temperature and relative density of harvestable crawfish, and 7.1% was explained by lunar phase. Rain showers and cold fronts accounted for 4.8 and 2.5% of the daily variation in crawfish CPUE, respectively. Crawfish catch increased with an increase in water temperature and relative abundance of harvestable crawfish, and with short duration rain showers. Conversely, crawfish CPUE declined with the approach of full moon and with passage of cold fronts.  相似文献

Procambarid crawfish aquaculture in the USA relies on an established forage‐based system for providing sustenance for growing crawfish. These systems may become inadequate at times for providing sufficient nourishment to support maximum growth of the population. Supplemental feeding is not routinely used because management recommendations for the cost‐effective use of supplemental feeds in ponds are not available. Because crawfish under confinement readily consume and grow well when fed single feedstuffs, such as rough rice seed and whole, raw soybeans, this study was initiated to investigate the use of these readily available low‐cost feedstuffs as supplemental feeds in aquaculture ponds. Earthen ponds (0.2 ha), constructed and managed to simulate commercial crawfish ponds, were used over three consecutive production seasons to evaluate the effects of supplemental feeding on yields and size of crawfish. Treatments for Seasons 1 and 2 consisted of (a) hull‐on rough rice seed, (b) whole raw soybean, (c) formulated 25% crude protein pellet, and (d) no supplementation and were replicated in four and three ponds for Seasons 1 and 2, respectively. Treatments for Season 3 consisted of (a) whole raw soybean and (b) no feed, with 10 replicated ponds each. Feeding frequency was established each year, and feeding rates were adjusted according to predetermined guidelines and monitoring of feeding trays. Crawfish harvesting was conducted by baited wire‐mesh traps and all harvested crawfish were subjected to a mechanical grader and sorted into three size classes. Results show that supplemental feeding, while trap‐harvesting operations are underway, can reduce yields and generate a negative economic benefit, perhaps as a result of residual feed within the pond rendering the baited trap less effective.  相似文献

The commercial crawfish industry in Louisiana is rapidly expanding. Because current harvesting methods are labor intensive and expensive, an automated mechanical harvester was developed.

The automated harvester is based on high density trapping with frequent trap movements. A linear move irrigator, which is adapted to large areas, was used as a chassis. Movement of the harvester was controlled automatically. The machine lowered traps for a preset trapping time, lifted and emptied the traps and moved a programmed distance before resetting the traps.

In a comparison test, the machine equaled or exceeded the efficiency of standard trapping methods. Little mechanical difficulty was experienced with the harvester.  相似文献

Trawling is a major concern worldwide and there is considerable debate about its impact on marine ecosystems. The Patagonian Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (PSLME) is an important fishing area in the Southwest Atlantic where bottom trawling is the dominant fishing method. We investigated the distribution of bottom trawl fishing within this region, defining the areas of highest trawling intensity (hotspots) and evaluating their relationship with marine fronts. We focused on the three main oceanographic fronts, the shelf‐break front, the southern Patagonia front and the mid‐shelf front. To estimate fishing effort and trawled areas, we used VMS data from 2006 to 2012. Despite being almost a fully trawlable shelf, we found that the spatial distribution of trawling activity is patchy and trawling hotspots were small, comprising annually <5% of the shelf extension or <7% of the total trawlable area. Contrary to what is believed worldwide, our findings suggest that over the PSLME the magnitude of habitat effects as a result of bottom trawling is relatively small. Regarding the three frontal systems studied, only the shelf‐break front showed a positive relationship with trawl fishing activity. Although trawling hotspots did not overlap with marine fronts, the shelf‐break front receives more trawling effort than expected. We hypothesize that this pattern is due to aggregation of species near or at the front taking advantage of the opportunities provided by this area.  相似文献

In the USA, cambarid crawfishes are harvested commercially with traps baited with fishes, formulated baits, or a combination of the two. Commercially formulated baits and fish baits, done and in combination, were evaluated to assess their relative effectiveness M attractants for crawfish. Traps baited with a combination of fish and formulated bait generally captured the most crawfish. Traps baited with common carp, the most effective natural bait, captured more crawfish than traps baited with skipjack herring, gizzard shad or channel catfish heads. Crawfish harvest from traps baited with several types of commercially formulated baits was equal to that obtained with traps baited with either gizzard shad or skipjack herring. Population density of crawfish and the availability of natural forage did not appear to influence relative effectiveness of either formulated baits or fish baits.  相似文献

The catch efficiency and retentive ability of 10 commercial crawfish traps were evaluated in commercial ponds. Trap designs with three entrance funnels caught significantly more crawfish than did trap designs with one or two funnels. Conversely, the retentive ability of the trap designs was inversely related to the number of entrance funnels.Traps constructed from PVC plastic-coated wire caught significantly more crawfish than identical trap designs made from galvanized wire; however, retentive ability of traps was not related to construction material. The posture (horizontal versus vertical) of identically designed traps when set in the pond did not affect the catch efficiency nor retentive ability of the traps. Traps with exposed bait caught 40–47% more crawfish than did traps with protected bait. An average of 84, 80 and 64% of marked crawfish were retained by traps after 12, 24 and 48 h, respectively.  相似文献

Physcial configuration and operational parameters of a prototype hydraulic soft-shell crawfish separator tray are described. The tray takes adavantage of the inability of soft-shell crawfish to resist a continuous water velocity to effectuate their rapid separation from a mixed population of pre-molts and intermolts. Removal of molted crawfish is rapid, and research therefore has focused on retaining intermolts in the separation tray. Given a well desigend separation tray, intermolt loss rates were found to be prinipally controlled by flow rate and intermolt retention time. Electrical inhibition gates powered by twelve-volt alternating current were used to discourage downstream migration of intermolts through administration of a mild shock upon contact. Crawfish became condioned to avoid the tray exit to the extent that they would not voluntarily approach the inhibition gate.  相似文献

This study utilized enclosures (cylindrical, 5-mm wire mesh, O.5 m2 bottom surface area) placed over rice-forage substrates in experimental crawfish ponds to contain crawfish under typical pond culture conditions. Juvenile Procambarus clarkii were stocked at six densities (2, 4, 6, 10, 14, and 18 crawfish/m2) for 12-wk growth trials in October and again in February. Crawfish relied solely on the detrital food system for their nutritional needs. Supplemental feed was supplied to crawfish in additional enclosures at two of the test densities (2 and 10 crawfish/m2). The commercially formulated feed (25% crude protein) was fed (2.02 g dry feed/m2) 3 d/wk (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). All treatments were replicated with six enclosures. Crawfish growth was inversely correlated to culture density. Mean final weights for crawfish feeding from the detrital-system only were 15.3, 13.8, 11.2, 7.9, 7.2, and 5.8 g for crawfish densities of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 14, and 18/m2, respectively. Mean final weights for crawfish receiving supplemental feed were 20.7 and 12.4 g for densities of 2 and 10 crawfish/m2. When compared with density as a factor influencing growth, feed influenced growth less than density abatement. Supplemental feeding improved crawfish growth in detrital systems an average of 46%, while decreasing initial density improved growth an average of 80.5%.  相似文献

A mathematical model was developed for soft-shell crawfish production management based on the assumption that the crawfish molt interval follows a normal distribution. The mean and standard deviation of the molt interval, the two main parameters of the model, were estimated to be 48 and 15 days, respectively, based on experimental data for the red swamp crawfish (Procambarus clarkii). The model was further verified through comparison with experimental data. Simulations using the model were conducted to evaluate the impact of mortality and management strategies upon soft-shell crawfish production. The results indicated that mortality is a major factor in determining the production rate of a soft-shell crawfish facility. For a 6-month operation period, the predicted total production is 263% of the loading capacity for a mortality rate of 1%/day. This production will drop to 101% of the loading capacity with a mortality rate of 5%/day. Besides variations in the mortality rate, loading and replacement strategies also affect soft-shell crawfish operation, as demonstrated by the simulation results.  相似文献

Three cultivars of Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench (grain sorghum, forage sorghum, and a sorghum sudangrass hybrid) were evaluated as planted forages for crawfish (Procambarus spp.) in two simulated culture systems, double cropping and crawfish monoculture. Based upon ease of culture, biomass production, and biomass degradation characteristics, grain sorghum and sorghum sudangrass exhibited great potential for either system. With the added advantage of grain production, grain sorghum represents the more attractive option and may provide farmers with a viable alternative to rice for double cropping with crawfish. The sorghum sudangrass produced large amounts of vegetative biomass and also represents a worthwhile forage option for the crawfish fanner. Either of these plants is conveniently incorporated into existing farm operations and could provide options as producers strive to integrate crawfish aquaculture with conventional agriculture.  相似文献

Bottom trawling (nets towed along the seabed) spread around the British Isles from the 1820s, yet the collection of national fisheries statistics did not begin until 1886. Consequently, analysis of the impacts of trawling on fish stocks and habitats during this early period is difficult, yet without this information, we risk underestimating the extent of changes that have occurred as a result of trawling activities. We examined witness testimonies recorded during two Royal Commissions of Enquiry (1863–66 and 1883–85). These enquiries interviewed hundreds of fishers about the early effects of sail trawling and the changes they were witnessing to fish stocks, habitats and fishing practises during this time. We converted all quantitative statements of perceived change in fish stocks and fishing practices to relative change. Witnesses from the north‐east of England interviewed during 1863 revealed an average perceived decline in whitefish of 64% during their careers, which many blamed upon trawling. Between 1867 and 1892, trawl‐landing records from the same location suggest that this trajectory continued, with fish availability declining by 66% during the period. Fishers adapted to these declines by increasing distances travelled to fishing grounds and increasing gear size and quantity. However, inshore declines continued and by the early 1880s even trawl owners were calling for closures of territorial waters to trawling in order to protect fish nursery and spawning grounds. Until now, these testimonies have been largely forgotten, yet they reveal that alterations to near‐shore habitats as a result of trawling began long before official data collection was initiated.  相似文献

The objective of this project was to develop a vision system that could predict when crawfish will molt. Different sections of the crawfish shell were examined to determine how the color changed as the time of molting approached. A strip on the tail section of the crawfish showed the greatest, most consistent color change. The average red/green × red/blue ratio decreased for every crawfish as the molting time approached. Using this ratio as a predictor, it was possible to predict the molting of a crawfish within 3 d with an accuracy greater than 80%. The limitation on accuracy was primarily the result of the large variations in natural shell color among the crawfish.  相似文献

The molting and mortality patterns at a crawfish density recommended for commercial-scale soft-shell crawfish culture systems showed that, over a 116 day period, 74% of the crawfish molted, 22% died, and 4% remained in the system at the end of the study. Approximately three weeks of adaption to the system were required before molting rates of the crawfish began to increase. By the sixth week, the number of malted crawfish per day exceeded the overall mean and remained at this level until 10 days before moltable crawfish were depleted. In a second study, three density levels (3.7,4.9, and 6.1 kg crawfish/m2) were tested for 60 days. The lowest density produced significantly fewer (P < 0.05) molted crawfish. Mortality was significantly greater (P < 0.05) at the highest density compared with the lowest density. The highest density (6.1 kg crawfish/m2) showed a higher molting rate than the lower densities, but it was not significantly different (P < 0.05) from the molting rate of 4.9 kg/m2.  相似文献

A 10 week laboratory growth trial was conducted with red swamp crawfish Procambarus clarkii to determine the amount of soybean protein that could be substituted for fish protein in formulated crawfish diets without reducing growth. Crawfish received 32% crude protein, isocaloric diets in which protein was supplied by soybean (soy) meal, menhaden fish meal or an isonitrogenous mixture of soybean and fish meal calculated to provide graded levels of each protein source. Dietary protein was provided as: 1) 100% soy protein; 2) 75% soy protein: 25% fish protein; 3) 50% soy protein: 50% fish protein; 4) 25% soy protein: 75% fish protein; and 5) 100% fish protein. Crawfish fed soy protein: fish protein (SP:FP) mixtures or fish protein alone exhibited better (P < 0.05) weight gain than crawfish fed a diet containing soy protein as the only protein source. Diets containing 25% soy protein: 75% fish protein (1:3 ratio) and 50% soy protein: 50% fish protein (1:1 ratio) produced greater (P < 0.05) weight gains than a diet in which fish protein was the sole protein source. Survival, feed efficiency ratio, maturation rate, net protein and energy retention, and body composition of crawfish did not differ (P > 0.05) among diets with SP:FP ratios of 1:3, 1:1 and 3:1. However, maximum (P < 0.05) weight gain occurred in crawfish fed the 1:3 SP:FP ratio. Although crawfish fed SP:FP ratios of 1:1 and 3:1 had lower weight gains in the laboratory than crawfish fed a 1:3 SP:FP ratio, SP:FP ratios of 1:1 and 3:1 might be adequate for supplemental diets fed to pond-reared crawfish that have access to natural sources of food.  相似文献

This study used a LA/AIDS model to estimate demand system for crustacean species, shrimp, crab, crawfish and lobster at the U.S. retail store level. Shrimp demand is price elastic; crab, crawfish and lobster are price inelastic. Shrimp price significantly affects market shares of crustacean products. Shrimp has more substitutes than other crustaceans, and lobster has less substitutes than others. The demand for crab and lobster grow faster than the demand for shrimp and crawfish when expenditure increases. Promotion has positive effects on market shares and sales volume of own products and negative effects on cross-products. Shrimp price-reduction promotion strategies will be effective in term of raising shrimp sales value. Marketing programs that increase consumers’ marginal utility with an additional small increase in the selling price of crab, crawfish and lobster products will be feasible, and bring higher sale values.  相似文献

One quarter of marine fish production is caught with bottom trawls and dredges on continental shelves around the world. Towed bottom‐fishing gears typically kill 20–50 per cent of the benthic invertebrates in their path, depending on gear type, substrate and vulnerability of particular taxa. Particularly vulnerable are epifaunal species, which stabilize the sediment and provide habitat for benthic invertebrates. To identify the habitats, fisheries or target species most likely to be affected, we review evidence of the indirect effects of bottom fishing on fish production. Recent studies have found differences in the diets of certain species in relation to bottom fishing intensity, thereby linking demersal fish to their benthic habitats at spatial scales of ~10 km. Bottom fishing affects diet composition and prey quality rather than the amount of prey consumed; scavenging of discarded by‐catch makes only a small contribution to yearly food intake. Flatfish may benefit from light trawling levels on sandy seabeds, while higher‐intensity trawling on more vulnerable habitats has a negative effect. Models suggest that reduction in the carrying capacity of habitats by bottom fishing could lead to lower equilibrium yield and a lower level of fishing mortality to obtain maximum yield. Trawling effort is patchily distributed – small fractions of fishing grounds are heavily fished, while large fractions are lightly fished or unfished. This patchiness, coupled with the foraging behaviour of demersal fish, may mitigate the indirect effects of bottom fishing on fish productivity. Current research attempts to scale up these localized effects to the population level.  相似文献

The effects of addition of substrate consisting of plastic mesh fencing to experimental earthen ponds were evaluated for the culture of the red swamp crawfish, Procambarus clarkii, without planted forage. Mean daily yield (kg/ha/d), number of crawfish harvested (number/ha/d), and mean individual harvest weight were compared for ponds with and without substrate during a 2‐yr period. The surface area of added substrate was equivalent to 50% of the bottom surface area of the pond. Mean daily yield in the ponds containing substrate, based on a comparison with that of the previous year, increased by 80.2% and was principally attributed to a 66.7% increase in the number of crawfish harvested. Comparative values for the ponds without substrate were ?13.1 and ?11.7%. For the second year, the treatment‐dependent response was consistent. Mean daily yield for the substrate ponds increased by 48.8% compared to 15.0% for the ponds lacking substrate. The primary benefit of the substrate appears to be provision of refuge and three‐dimensional distribution of crawfish in the pond, thereby reducing the incidence of cannibalism and increasing the total number of crawfish harvested per hectare per day. The benefit of the substrate in a commercial production setting must be weighed against its cost and longevity as well as the conditions of the particular management scenario into which it may be incorporated.  相似文献

Droughts are likely to increase in frequency and severity with climate change, modifying the economic viability of inshore fisheries in regions of hydrological extreme. Variation in the revenue and profit associated with different mixtures of fishing methods between non-drought and drought conditions was examined for commercial fishing businesses in three estuarine and coastal systems in eastern Australia from 1997 to 2007. Mean monthly revenue decreased from 8 to 36% between non-drought and drought. Decreased mean monthly revenue was primarily attributed to reduced revenue generation from ocean prawn trawling (≥20%) and estuarine prawn trawling (≥34%) during drought. Fishing method diversity (measured by a modified form of the Shannon index) and mean monthly revenue were positively related; however, mean monthly profit decreased between non-drought and drought under a range of alternative cost scenarios. Reduced mean monthly profit was primarily attributed to losses from ocean prawn trawling (≥15%) and estuarine prawn trawling (≥30%) during drought. Although diversified harvesting behaviour increased revenue generation, initial results indicated that this marginal economic benefit could have been compromised by the greater costs associated with the increased diversification which reduced overall profitability. Results of this analysis indicated that the commercial fishing sector is a drought-affected industry in New South Wales.  相似文献

A 4.5-m long bag seine was used to sample crawfish from six 0.04 ha experimental ponds. Length-frequency histograms were evaluated as a predictor of size structure and to detect stunted populations of crawfish. The findings demonstrated importance of determining size structure of crawfish in predicting stunting and harvest potential of a population. Distinct differences in size structure of crawfish populations were apparent by 6 and 12 weeks after flooding ponds. Crawfish populations, with over 45% of the individuals exceeding 75 mm total length after 12 weeks, produced 25 to 30% greater yields than populations in which less than 5% of the crawfish exceeded 75 mm at 12 weeks post-flooding.  相似文献
