Summary The reactions to infection with two cultures of Puccinia hordei were determined for 292 Hordeum spontaneum (syn. H. vulgare ssp. spontaneum) accessions, collected at 16 sites which encompassed the ecological range of H. spontaneum in Israel. Culture Tel-Aviv was from Israel and culture 57.19 was from the United States. Fifty-two percent of the accessions were resistant to culture Tel-Aviv and 67% were resistant to culture 57.19. Forty-three percent of the accessions were resistant to both cultures. The average infection type (IT) of accessions within sites ranged from 2.7 to 7.5 on a 0–9 rating scale. The results showed that the presence of Ornithogalum species, the alternate hosts of P. hordei, may increase the percentage of H. spontaneoum accessions resistant to P. hordei. More accessions were resistant at sites where humidity at 1400 was higher, the annual evaporation was lower, and where the glumes were shorter. Kernel weight and annual rainfall was not correlated with resistance. A lower percentage of H. spontaneum accessions were resistant to P. hordei culture Tel-Aviv from Israel than to culture 57.19 from the United States. In a previous study a lower percentage of H. spontaneum accessions also was found to be resistant to a culture of Erysiphe graminis hordei from Israel than to cultures from other countries. Previous studies also have shown that cultures of P. hordei and E. graminis hordei from Israel have many genes for virulence on barley, and that H. spontaneum accessions from Israel have many genes for resistance to these two pathogens. Previous results and the results reported in this paper support the hypothesis of coevolution of resistant host genes and virulent pathogen genes where hosts and pathogens have coexisted for many thousand years.  相似文献

Summary Improvements in the success of doubled haploid production have been achieved partly by screening new accessions of Hordeum bulbosum. In order to assess levels of variation within stocks of this species, rates of embryo differentiation from the cross between H. vulgare × H. bulbosum were recorded for selections derived from two different stocks of H. bulbosum. There was little difference within stocks for this character despite variation in the morphology and banding patterns of two enzyme systems of one of the stocks. It is proposed that to obtain further increases in success rates a few selections from many accessions of H. bulbosum should be screened rather than many selections from a few stocks.  相似文献

Summary The Near East Fertile Crescent extending from Iran to Israel is the centre of origin of cultivated barley and a region of great genetic diversity in wild barley, Hordeum spontaneum C. Koch (syn. H. vulgare ssp. spontaneum (C. Koch Thell)). Wild barley accessions collected from different parts of this region were evaluated for their reactions to infection with three isolates of Erysiphe graminis hordei and two of Puccinia hordei. One culture of each pathogen was isolated in Israel and the others, either in Japan or the United States. Out of a total of 330 wild barley accessions collected from 14 sites in Iran, Turkey and Syria, only 18.8% were resistant to the Israeli culture, and 14.8% were resistant to a composite of the Japanese and American cultures of E. graminis hordei. Out of 105 accessions collected from six sites in Iran and Turkey, none was found to be resistant to the Israeli culture and 34.3% were resistant to the American culture of P. hordei. Considerable variation was observed both within and among sites for reactions to infection with different cultures of each of the two pathogens. The results of this study were compared with those of an earlier study involving wild barley accessions from Israel to illustrate the relative importance of different subregions in the Near East Fertile Crescent as sources of new genes for resistance to E. graminis hordei and P. hordei. Implications of these studies for in situ conservation of genetic diversity in wild barley are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Twenty-seven accessions of Hordeum species and interspecific hybrids were screened in a growth chamber for resistance against the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi. Resistance measurement was based on the aphids' population growth during a 16-day period. The mean number of nymphs produced per female was only about 14% of that on the control cv. Tellus. H. bogdani was the most resistant accession. As a group, interspecific F1-hybrids with common barley (H. vulgare × H. sp.) held an intermediate position. Differences in resistance between hybrids as well as between species (H. jubatum and H. lechleri) were observed. The most resistant species were all diploids. No effects of the host plant on formation of alatae or on the within-plant distribution of aphids were found.  相似文献

Summary Accessions of Hordeum vulgare subsp. spontaneum, the progenitor of cultivated barley, were screened in field and glasshouse trials for resistance to the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi. A few selected lines were furthermore hybridized with a modern barley variety and the resulting populations evaluated. High levels of resistance were found among some of the spontaneum accessions resulting in lower aphid growth rates (maximum reduction 57%). Segregation patterns among siblings in F2 populations were continuous, indicating the presence of several genes with possibly additive effects. The usefulness of H. vulgare subsp. spontaneum for breeding aphid resistant barley is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The reactions of 233 Triticum dicoccoides acessions, collected at 10 sites in Israel and elsewhere, to infection with cultures of Erysiphe graminis tritici, were determined. The reactions indicated that the number of sources of resistance to E. graminis tritici which can be obtained from T. dicoccoides plants growing wild in Israel and elsewhere is almost unlimited. One hundred and fourteen or 49% of the accessions were resistant, and 137 or 59% of the accessions were resistant or moderately resistant to infection with four cultures of E. graminis tritici which possess the virulence genes corresponding to most of the identified resistance genes in wheat. Accessions collected at sites with marginal habitats where T. dicoccoides grows poorly and has lower grain weight, were more susceptible than were accessions collected at sites with an optimal habitat for growth of T. dicoccoides. The results agreed with those in a previous study with Hordeum spontaneum, and indicate that to obtain H. spontaneum or T. dicoccoides accessions with the highest level of resistance to the powdery mildew pathogens, plants should be collected at sites in ecological and geographic regions where those two species occupy optimum habitats and are exposed to the powdery mildew pathogens.  相似文献

Summary Hordeum chilense is a wild barley extensively used in wide crosses in the Triticeae. It could be a valuable source of resistance to Fusarium culmorum and Septoria nodorum. Some H. chilense x Triticum spp. amphiploids, named tritordeums, were more resistant than the parental wheat line to these diseases, others were not. Average contents of ergosterol and deoxynivalenol (DON) suggested that resistance to colonization by Fusarium was the highest for Hordeum chilense, followed by tritordeum and wheat in decreasing order. In particular, the H. chilense genotypes H7 and H17 enhanced the wheat resistance to F. culmorum in its tritordeum offsprings. Resistance to S. nodorum in tritordeum was not associated with tall plant height. There is sufficient genetic variation for resistance to F. culmorum and S. nodorum among tritordeum to allow the breeding of lines combining short straw and resistance to both diseases.  相似文献

Broad genotypic variation in the response to low soilmoisture and reduced nitrogen supply was found amongthe wild Hordeum spontaneum accessions and thelandraces and modern cultivars of H. vulgare ofdifferent geographic origin. Measurements at the endof vegetative growth in plants grown in soil culturesrevealed genotypically specific responses to the usedenvironmental factors. Cultivars and breeding linesfrom Syria and Ethiopian landraces combined bothdrought resistance and tolerance to low nitrogen. TheSyrian barleys were also distinguished by a highnitrogen utilization efficiency (NUE) under low Nnutrition. European cultivars indicated a pooradaptation to N shortage, but some of them wereresistant to soil drought. No stress resistant barleyswere found among the wild accessions and Sardinianlandraces. Genotypic differences in the relativevalues of NUE and water use efficiency were associatedwith low N-tolerance. Some Syrian selections,Ethiopian landraces and the modern German cv. Maresiwere found to be most drought resistant. Maintenanceof a relatively high photosynthetic activity of theuppermost leaves was associated with droughtresistance. As far as concerning with the vegetativegrowth phase, the modern Syrian germplasm andEthiopian landraces may be recommended as donors ofadaptative characters for local barley breeding.  相似文献

Between 580 and 700 accessions of related cultivated and wild species of the genus Beta were assessed for resistance to four soil-borne diseases of sugar beet: two seedling damping-off diseases caused by the fungi Aphanomyces cochlioides and Pythium ultimum and two diseases of more mature plants, Rhizoctonia root and crown rot, caused by the fungus R. solani, and Rhizomania, caused by Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), a furovirus transmitted by the plasmodiophorid Polymyxa betae. Analysis of resistance data (assessed on an international standardised 1–9 scale of Resistance Scores) indicated that the highest levels of resistance ({RS} 2) to A. cochlioides and P. ultimum were to be found amongst accessions of the more distantly related sections Corollinae (93% of accessions tested) and Procumbentes (10%), respectively; although useful levels could also be found in the more closely related, and sexually compatible, section Beta (1–6%). Resistance to Rhizoctonia was also found in section Beta (5–7%), depending on whether field or glasshouse tests were used, but there was little evidence of generally high levels of resistance to Rhizomania among accessions of this section. None of the accessions of sections Corollinae and Procumbentes exhibited any notable resistance to Rhizoctonia. However, all sections Procumbentes and some sections Corollinae (4%) accessions were highly resistant to Rhizomania. Individuals with high levels of resistance to Rhizomania were identified from within some section Beta and Corollinae accessions, in which there was evidence of segregation.  相似文献

Summary The effects of different spike covering materials have been investigated in crosses between Hordeum vulgare and H. bulbosum and in selfed H. vulgare. It was found that after lemmas and paleas were clipped, improvements in seed quality (H. vulgare × H. bulbosum) and weight (selfed H. vulgare) were obtained by covering heads with small brown paper bags compared with other treatments. Possible reasons for these effects are discussed but so far the mechanism has not been clarified. However, light is suggested as playing a major role.  相似文献

A species level germplasm collection representing 76% of known taxa in the genus Vigna subgenus Ceratotropis was evaluated for resistance to two species of bruchid beetles, Callosobruchus chinensis and C. maculatus. Seven taxa consisting of 29 accessions were found to be resistant to C. chinensis and 4 taxa consisting of 24 accessions were found to be resistant to C. maculatus. This compared with no resistant accessions being found in several hundred landrace accessions of mungbean, V. radiata var. radiata, in the same subgenus. Sometimes resistance was found in all accessions of a particular taxon, such as complete resistance to both C. chinensis and C. macualtus in V. umbellata. Other taxa showed intra taxon variation for resistance such as V. reflexo-pilosa andV. minima. The levels and patterns of resistance among taxa were diverse. The results suggest that various factors cause resistance to bruchid in the subgenus Ceratotropis. While the number of eggs laid on seeds generally reflected seed size, one small seeded cultivar of V. mungo var. mungo, black gram, had an unusually high number of eggs laid per seed. No correlation was found between seed size and levels of resistance. The species level germplasm collection, which reflects the core collection concept in trying to maximize genetic diversity in a limited number of accessions, has enabled a large number of potentially useful sources of resistance to bruchid beetles to be found efficiently. Zingiber zerumbet (L) Smith, a wild clonal species related to the cultivated ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe), is a potential resistance donor for soft rot disease in ginger caused by Pythium aphanidermatum (Edson) Fitzp. In this study we evaluated the genetic diversity and P. aphanidermatum resistance of 74 Z. zerumbet accessions belonging to 15 populations from eight districts in Kerala state, India. The disease index (DI) of the accessions varied from 0% to 72.24% and the accessions could be separated into six frequency classes according to their DI values. More than 65% of the accessions had a DI < 20%. Eight accessions were found to be immune to the infection. The relative frequency of resistant accessions was higher in the central and northern regions of Kerala. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis of Z. zerumbet accessions using five primer combinations yielded 215 bands in total, of which 175 (81.4%) were polymorphic. Nei’s genetic diversity (h) of 0.2738 and Shannon information index (I) of 0.4012 revealed a high genetic diversity in Z. zerumbet unexpected for a clonal species. In the UPGMA dendrogram, accessions were clustered mostly according to their geographical origin and no clear correspondence was observed between the clustering pattern of accessions and their responses to Pythium aphanidermatum. The study revealed high genetic diversity and variability for pathogen resistance among Z. zerumbet accessions and confirmed the value of Z. zerumbet as a potential donor for soft rot resistance for the genetic improvement of ginger.  相似文献

Diploid wheat, Triticum monococcum s.l., is a host for the wheat leaf rust fungus, Puccinia triticina. Some accessions have been reported to show a high degree of prehaustorial resistance. This is non-hypersensitivity resistance, which acts before the formation of haustoria by the pathogen. To assess the frequency of prehaustorial resistance 598 accessions of diploid wheat were inoculated with the wheat leaf rust isolate Felix. Most T. monococcum s.s. accessions (84%) were resistant whereas all T. urartu and all but three T. boeoticumaccessions were susceptible. Histological components analysis revealed that a high percentage of prehaustorial resistance to P. triticina was found in only three T. monococcum accessions. No haustoria were observed in such infection units confirming the prehaustorial nature of the resistance. Prehaustorial abortion of certain infection units in an accession always coincided with posthaustorial abortion of the other infection units. Seed dormancy is one of the most important parameters affecting the malting process and pre-harvest sprouting in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Variation of seed dormancy in 4365 cultivated and 177 wild barley (ssp. spontaneum) accessions derived from different regions of the world was investigated in Okayama University, Kurashiki, Japan. Seed dormancy of each accession was estimated from their germination percentages at 0, 5, 10 and 15 weeks post-harvest after-ripening periods. All of the wild barley accessions showed less than 10% germination at 0 week after-ripening period. Level of seed dormancy in 4365 cultivated barley accessions showed a clear geographical differentiation. Seventy seven percent of Ethiopian accessions showed high germination percentages, while 86% of Japanese, Turkish and North African accessions showed low germination percentages at 0 week after-ripening period. A half diallel cross using eleven barley accessions with different level of dormancy revealed that seed dormancy was predominately controlled by additive gene effects. These results suggest that large genetic diversity for seed dormancy in barley is explained as different levels of additive accumulation of genetic factors. Barley varieties showing appropriate dormancy could be developed by crossing among barley germplasm accessions used in the present study.  相似文献

Hordeum chilense exhibits resistance to Septoria tritici. Addition and substitution lines of H. chilensein wheat were utilized in growth chamber and field experiments to determine which H. chilense chromosomes carry resistance genes. Resistance is conferred by gene(s) on chromosome 4 and, to a minor extent, by genes on chromosomes 5, 6 and 7. Spodoptera litura (Fabr.), the tobacco caterpillar, is a major defoliator on sunflower in the tropics. Genetic variability for resistance to S. litura is limited in the cultivar germplasm of sunflower. In the present investigation, 43 accessions of 17 wild Helianthus species of the annual and perennial habit groups were evaluated along with cultivated sunflower under field and no-choice conditions in the laboratory for resistance to this pest. Under field conditions, H. occidentalis and H. argophyllus were found to be immune with no leaf damage and few accessions of the species belonging to section Divaricati were found to be resistant. Laboratory bioassays against neonate, two and 4-day-old larvae confirmed resistance both in terms of high larval mortality and low larval weight gain in eight species viz., H. occidentalis, H. argophyllus, H. tuberosus, H. maximiliani, H. mollis, H. simulans, H. divaricatus and H. hirsutus. Intra-accessional variability was observed and accessions of few species showed varied reaction (resistant, partially resistant to susceptible) to the target pest. Field evaluation of 224 backcross derived inbred lines from five cross combinations involving diploid species under high natural pest incidence revealed low damage in plants derived from crosses involving H. argophyllus and H. petiolaris.  相似文献

Summary Two tetraploid and two diploid clones of Hordeum bulbosum were screened for resistance to five isolates of powdery mildew which are virulent on cultivated barley. All were resistant and this resistance was also expressed in hybrids with H. vulgare. The tetraploid genotypes were also resistant to isolates of yellow rust and brown rust. These results show that H. bulbosum contains useful genes for resistance to these diseases and that there is a potential to transfer these into cultivated barley.  相似文献

Mist-chamber, field, and detached leaf inoculation procedures identified plants resistant to bacterial soft rot [Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora, (Ecc)] in Brassica rapa and related species. The mist-chamber seedling inoculation provided the best correlation of mean disease severity ratings with the field plant inoculation (r = 0.67**) and was used to identify resistant materials. The optimum mist-chamber incubation conditions to distinguish the resistance of accessions were 23 °C and 100% RH and were used for primary screening. A total of 752 accessions of B. rapa and related Cruciferae were screened. In general, accessions of B. oleracea were more resistant than accessions of B. rapa. Within B. rapa, subspecies pekinensis and chinensis were more susceptible than other subspecies. No completely resistant material was found. In species of B. rapa, only 7% of accessions showed some degree of resistance with plant-to-plant variation within the accessions. G30444, G30449, and AVRDC2837 were identified as the most resistant materials in B. rapa by both mist-chamber and field inoculations. The resistance was correlated between an USA isolate (Geneva-1) and two Chinese isolates (RL4-1 and RL-19) of Ecc. Resistance to four foliar diseases of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris), virus yellows caused by Beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV) and Beet yellows virus (BYV), powdery mildew (Erysiphe betae) and Cercospora leaf spot (Cercospora beticola), was assessed in up to 600 accessions of closely related wild and cultivated Beta species. Most accessions were from the Section Beta, a taxon containing types most closely related to, and sexually compatible with, sugar beet and therefore most valuable for use in crop improvement. Between 1–12% of accessions were highly resistant (resistance scores of 2 on an international standardised resistance scale of 1–9) to these diseases. These levels, however, underestimate the potential number of resistant sources available from this section as some accessions with intermediate mean resistance scores contained a significant proportion of highly resistant plants within segregating populations. Variation in resistance to all diseases except BYV was observed within the Section Beta. Much higher levels of resistance were observed, and more frequently, in more distantly related sections of the genus Beta. Accessions of the Section Corollinae were highly resistant to both viruses (>62% of accessions tested), but less so to Cercospora (15%) and they were very susceptible to powdery mildew. Section Procumbentes accessions were highly resistant to BMYV and Cercospora (100%) but less so to powdery mildew (50%) and BYV (20%). However, sexual incompatibility between these sections and sugar beet make utilisation of these sources impractical using conventional breeding methods.  相似文献

Summary Six wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum) accessions, from a diverse range of habitats, and two spring-cultivated barleys, were examined for variation in durations of development phases. The durations of the leaf initiation and spikelet initiation phases were longer and spikelet growth phases shorter, in wild than in cultivated barley. Across all wild and cultivated barleys the rate and duration of spikelet initiation were negatively correlated, but neither was related to the number of spikelets per spike. The number of spikelets was positively correlated with the number of leaves and the ratio of the number of spikelets to the number of leaves declined with increasing time to anthesis, indicating that each successive leaf was associated with a diminishing increase in the number of spikelets. The duration of culm elongation and final culm length were shorter in accessions of cultivated barley compared with wild barley. This paper also discusses the feasibility for increasing the number of spikelets per spike through breeding for genetic changes in lengths of pre-anthesis phases of development.Abbreviations ANOVA Analysis of variance - HV Hordeum vulgare - CE Culm elongation - DR Double ridge - HS Hordeum spontaneu - ° Cd Degree days  相似文献
