Abstract  The suitability of three anatomical structures to determine age and growth of bull trout, Salvelinus confluentus (Suckley), was assessed. Scales and pelvic fin rays collected from recaptured bull trout 96–265 mm TL were used to validate annulus formation and assess the accuracy and precision of back calculation. Ageing precision and agreement of assigned ages were compared among scales, fin rays and otoliths from bull trout 52–711 mm TL. Annulus formation was validated for 88% (14 of 16 fish) of recaptured bull trout using pelvic fin rays and 68% using scales (15 of 22 fish). Annulus formation in fin rays occurred between late April to early June, and the hyaline (non-growth) band began forming in late August. Back-calculated length was not significantly different from measured length at initial capture either for fin rays or scales ( P  ≥   0.19), and absolute percent error was 7.2 ± 1.2 (mean ± SE; n  =   14) for fin rays and 8.7 ± 1.9 ( n  =   15) for scales. Consistency of back-calculated lengths at age between tag and recapture samples for individual fish was similar for fin rays (mean absolute difference = 8.2% ± 0.9; n  =   33) and scales (9.4% ± 1.4; n  =   40). However, fin rays (87% precision) and otoliths (90%) provided notably higher ageing precision than scales (68%) and closer agreement of assigned ages, particularly for fish older than age 4. Pelvic fin rays appear to offer more accurate and precise age and growth determinations than scales and a non-lethal alternative to otoliths, but further work is needed to validate the accuracy and precision of ageing large, migratory bull trout.  相似文献

The effectiveness of pelvic fin ray microchemistry of muskellunge, Esox masquinongy Mitchill, to identify stocked individuals along with the potential to identify naturally reproduced fish were evaluated. Fish and water samples were obtained from one hatchery and seven lakes with natural differences in water Sr:Ca to determine whether location‐specific environmental signatures were recorded in sectioned muskellunge pelvic fin rays, including fish of known environmental history. Water and fin ray Sr:Ca were strongly correlated. Six lakes in Illinois possessed Sr:Ca signatures that were distinct from the hatchery where muskellunge were raised, resulting in pronounced shifts in Sr:Ca across sectioned fin rays of stocked fish. Hatchery and lake‐specific Sr:Ca signatures were stable across years. Sixteen of 19 individual fish known to have been stocked based on PIT tags implanted at stocking were correctly identified as hatchery‐origin fish using fin ray core Sr:Ca. Results also indicated that the hatchery Sr:Ca signal can be retained for at least 7 years in fin rays of stocked fish. Fin ray microchemistry is a non‐lethal approach for determining environmental history of muskellunge that could be used to assess movement patterns in lake and river systems and the degree to which muskellunge populations are supported by natural reproduction and stocking.  相似文献

Abstract Evaluating the response of fish populations to environmental influences requires precise age estimation. Pectoral fin rays and scales were compared to determine which is more precise for estimating age of blue sucker, Cycleptus elongatus (Lesueur), from the Missouri River, USA. Mean coefficient of variation was significantly lower for fin rays both among three novice readers (rays 19.9%; scales 23.1%) and among three reads by a single experienced reader (rays 11.8%; scales 18.6%). Additionally, exact per cent agreement (rays 20.0%; scales 14.3%) and within‐1‐year per cent agreement (rays 89.1%; scales 73.9%) were higher for fin rays compared with scales for multiple reads by the same experienced reader. Age–bias plots revealed that scale ages were lower than fin‐ray ages >7. The use of fin rays is recommended for estimating ages of blue sucker until validation procedures are conducted.  相似文献

Abstract  Fin rays are a common structure used in age and growth analyses, but many inconsistencies exist regarding removal and processing methodology. The purpose of this study was to evaluate precision of age estimates obtained from shovelnose sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus platorynchus (Rafinesque) fin rays sectioned at different locations. Fin rays were examined from 203 shovelnose sturgeon sampled from Pools 9, 13 and 14 of the Mississippi River. Three readers provided age estimates for sections acquired from five locations along fin rays to determine the optimum location for removing and sectioning fin rays. Precision and readability were generally greater for fin ray sections close to the articulating process on the fin ray (i.e. proximal) and decreased as sections approached the tip (i.e. distal). Based on these results, it is recommended that scientists remove shovelnose sturgeon fin rays at the articulating process and section immediately distal to the conspicuous curve in the fin ray close to the articulating process of the ray.  相似文献

Growth rate, survival and body composition of muskellunge Esox musquinongy (initial mean total length = 125 mm) and tiger muskellunge E. masquinongy × E. lucius (initial mean total length = 115 mm) fed semi-purified diets differing in protein level from 31 to 40% and 34 to 45%, respectively, were evaluated in 8-wk trials. The minimum protein level that yielded satisfactory growth rates for muskellunge was 37%, whereas tiger muskellunge growth rates were highest for fish fed a 45% protein diet. Growth differences were caused by changes in protein quantity, not quality, as amino acid ratios were similar for test diets and showed no imbalances among diets. Condition factors for both fishes increased with dietary protein. Survival of muskellunge (73%) and tiger muskellunge (97%) was not pffected by diet type. Body protein increased and fat content decreased in both fishes when fed higher dietary protein. Results suggest that both fishes respond similarly to dietary changes, but that substantial differences exist in protein requirements.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken with a view to compare the precision and reliability of the age readings obtained from different bony structures of some important freshwater teleosts viz., Labeo rohita (Hamilton), Catla catla (Hamilton) and Channa marulius (Hamilton). Standard procedures were followed to prepare and study the age structures. In L. rohita and C. marulius percent agreement between reader's age estimates was highest for scales, i.e. 96.3% and 90.5%, respectively and in C. catla percent agreement was highest (93.3%) for opercular bone. When scale ages were compared with other alternative structures viz., otoliths, opercular bone, vertebral centra and dorsal fin rays, percent agreement was found highest between scale and opercular bone age estimates (77.8%) in L. rohita and between scale and otoliths (94.8%) in C. marulius. In case of C. catla highest percent agreement was found between opercular bone and scale age estimates. In L. rohita each of the ageing structure showed significant (P < 0.05) underestimation of age in comparison to scales. In C. catla mean age estimates from opercular bone were comparable (P > 0.05) to the values obtained from all other structures except dorsal fin rays. In C. marulius mean age estimates from scales were comparable (P > 0.05) to those from all other structures except from dorsal fin rays. Results indicated scales to be the most suitable structure for ageing L. rohita and C. marulius and opercular bone for C. catla. However, in C. catla also scales may be used as a non-destructive method of age estimation with satisfactory results.  相似文献

Abstract – The relationships between size and age at smolting and juvenile growth rates were examined for 13 populations of white-spotted charr ( Salvelinus leucomaenis ). Mean smolt length (ranging 142–210 mm in fork length) and smolt age (2.4–3.7 years) varied significantly among populations and there was a significant negative relationship between smolt length and age. Mean smolt length was positively correlated with mean specific growth rate from age 0 to 1 year, whereas mean smolt age was negatively correlated with specific growth rate. The present study shows that the freshwater environment conditions operating on juvenile growth are important for moulding the phenotypic characteristics of size and age at smolting.  相似文献

Cobia Rachycentron canadum juveniles (119.7 mm TL, weight 8.5 g) were reared for 10 wk at three salinity levels: 5 ppt, 15 ppt. and 30 ppt. Growth and survival were determined through biweekly sampling. Blood samples obtained at termination of the study were analyzed to determine hematocrit, blood osmolality, and total protein. Results indicated that the overall growth of fish was significantly affected by salinity. Mean (± SE) total length (TL) and weight of fish reared at a salinity of 30 ppt were 201.7 ± 2.6 mm and 47.6 ± 1.9 g, respectively, followed by fish reared at 15 ppt (182.2 ± 1.7 mm, 34.1 ± 1.6 g). and 5 ppt (168.3 ± 5.8 mm TL, 28.3 ± 2.3 g). Differences in specific growth rates among treatments for the 10-wk period were also significant. No differences were detected in mean survival among fish reared at salinities of 5, 15, and 30 ppt (84, 94, and 94%, respectively). However, fish reared at salinity 5 ppt appeared to be in poor health as skin lesions, fin erosion, and discoloration were evident. Analysis of blood revealed that, while no differences existed among treatments with respect to plasma total protein, fish reared at a salinity of 5 ppt exhibited significantly reduced hematocrit (25% vs. > 30%) and plasma osmolality values (318 vs. > 353 mmolkg) relative to fish reared at higher salinities. Cobia can tolerate exposure to low salinity environments for short periods of time without mortality; however, moderate to high salinities are required for sustained growth and health of this species.  相似文献

Abstract –  We measured the growth and mortality characteristics of northern pike ( Esox lucius ) in a northern Ontario river and examined the influence of flow on these characteristics by comparing our measurements with those estimated for a lake at the same latitude based on published studies. Pike ranged in total length from 229 to 784 mm, in mass from 70 to 4250 g, and in age from 1 to 10 years. The population showed a preponderance of 2–5-year olds, with few fish surviving beyond 7 years of age. Growth, in terms of length increase, was similar to that reported for circumpolar populations. Mean total length at 5 years of age was 577 mm, growth rate of young adults was 62.5 mm year−1, growth was isometric, longevity was 10 years of age, and the adult annual mortality rate was 49%. Growth and mortality characteristics of this riverine population were similar to those estimated for a lacustrine population at the same latitude. Flow thus had little measurable effect on the growth or mortality of pike possibly because of the overwhelming effect of other abiotic variables such as temperature, length of growing season and productivity. Consequently, growth characteristics of lacustrine populations can be used to assess the health and condition of riverine populations.  相似文献

To determine the effect of development and environment on fin growth, we measured fin lengths of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from two hatcheries (August, October and April–May), stream-reared fish (July and October) stocked as fry into two tributaries, and smolts from the main stem of the Connecticut River (May). For stream-reared parr, there was a linear relationship between the dorsal, caudal and anal fins with fork length, while the pectoral, pelvic and adipose fins exhibited a curvilinear relationship with fork length. Parr from a high gradient stream had larger caudal fins than fish from a low gradient stream, but other fins did not differ. Regression lines for the fins of stream-reared smolts were all linear when fin length was regressed against fork length. Stream-reared parr had larger pectoral, pelvic and anal fins than smolts of similar size while dorsal and caudal fin lengths did not differ. Regression equations formulated using the fins of stream-reared parr were used to calculate the percent difference (100×observed fin length/expected) in fin lengths between stream- and hatchery-reared parr. The pelvic, adipose, caudal and anal fins of hatchery-reared parr showed no signs of degeneration by the first sampling period 7 months after hatching, whereas degeneration in the pectoral (13–20%) and dorsal (15–18%) fins was evident at this time. By the end of the study, degeneration was present in every fin except the adipose, with the pectoral (35–65%) and dorsal (32–58%) fins exhibiting the greatest amount of fin loss. All fins of hatchery-reared parr became shorter with time. There were minor differences in fin degeneration among parr from the two hatcheries, but the overall pattern of decreasing fin size was similar, indicating a common cause of fin degeneration. Comparison of stream- and hatchery-reared fish is a valuable means of determining the impact of captive environments on fin growth.  相似文献

Of 32 structures examined in the white sucker, annulus formation is potentially suited for age determination only on the dermethoid, frontal, lacrimal and rib bones, pectoral fin rays and body scales. Ages assigned by annulus counts on each of the above-noted structures, except scales, were in total agreement. Scale annulus counts were accurate determinants of age in slow-growing riverine stocks, but not in faster-growing lake fish using the same river for reproduction. A linear correlation (r=+0.978) between pectoral fin ray radii and standard length regardless of growth rate, and confirmed by tag-recovery data, permits the accurate back-calculation of white sucker growth using annuli formed on this structure.  相似文献

Wild and non-native hatchery-reared brown trout, Salmo trutta L., released when 2 summers old, were caught in the littoral habitat of Vinstervatna Reservoir, southern Norway. Hatchery-reared brown trout grew more slowly and had a smaller asymptotic length (293 ± 71 mm CL) than native fish (391 ± 56 mm CL). Hatchery-reared brown trout also exhibited significantly shorter life spans than native fish. This category consisted mainly of individuals aged 2+ and 3+ years, and only 1.5% of the specimens were aged ≥5 years. The ages of the native fish in the sample were between 2 and 8 years, and the most abundant age groups of trout were 4+ and 5+ years. It is suggested that the differences in life-history characteristics are related to adaptations by the native trout to the local environmental conditions. In this reservoir, which has a limited food supply as a result of water level fluctuations and a high level of inter- and intraspecific competition, environmental effects might be significant.  相似文献

Abstract. Oxytetracycline (OTC) was intraperitoneally injected into pike, Esox lucius L., to determine the validity of ages derived from cleithra and pelvic fin rays, to determine the rate of OTC incorporation into calcified structures, to decermine suitable marking dosages and to assess OTC-induced mortality.
The results showed that annuli were laid down on pike cleithra and pelvic fin rays. OTC was incorporated into most calcified structures as early as 6 h after injection and all structures were marked within 24 h. A dosage range of 25–50 mg OTC/kg fish was appropriate for marking pike. OTC-induced mortality was statistically insignificant.  相似文献

Triploid hybrid saugeyes may be a desirable stocking alternative because diploid saugeyes are fertile and can compromise the genetic integrity of parental stocks. Four groups of saugeye eggs were heat-shocked 5 min after fertilization for 15 min at 31 °C, which resulted in an 86.7 ± 9.4% triploidy rate and 57.8 ± 24.3% survival to the eyed-stage. Heat shocked and control saugeyes were stocked in two ponds for 40 days at 395 000 ind. ha–1. Mean length and weight of triploid and heat-shocked diploid saugeyes were greater ( P  < 0.01) than unshocked diploid saugeyes. Survival of heat-shocked saugeyes (22.4%) was lower than unshocked saugeyes (94.7%). Heat-shocked fish ( n =25 851) harvested from ponds were stocked for 153 days in O'Shaughnessy Reservoir, Ohio, USA. Triploids were 34 mm shorter and weighed 41 g less than heat-shocked diploids ( P  < 0.01). Mean length and weight of triploids were comparable with unshocked diploids elsewhere in Ohio.  相似文献

Abstract.— Fingerling rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss , were fed for 133 d by one of three feeding methods: one demand feeder per 5.5 m of raceway, 2 demand feeders per 5.5 m of raceway, and hand-fed controls. Mean weight, total length, mortality, and feed conversion were not influenced by the method of feeding. Size variation did not differ among treatment groups, as assessed by comparing the coefficient of variation of total length. Necropsy-based health and condition profiles were conducted three times during the rearing period, and results indicated that fish were generally normal and healthy in all treatments. Several parameters differed significantly over time, but no trends were observed except for the fin index and hematocrit. Over time, hematocrit decreased from 48.6 to 45.0%, and the fin index increased from 0.80 to 1.57. Fin index values did not differ among the feeding methods. Fin condition assessed by measuring relative fin length was better in the single feeder treatment than controls for caudal and ventral fins in the last sample. However, since fish from the two-feeder treatment did not differ from controls, demand feeding per se did not improve fin condition relative to fish that were fed by hand, four to six times per day. The lack of significant improvements in growth or health with the addition of another demand feeder indicated that using more than one feeder per 5.5 m of raceway length is unnecessary for culture of juvenile rainbow trout.  相似文献

This study selected small (100–120 μm) egg-bearing females from a local Thai ss population and characterized their first offspring's life history in an attempt to produce small-size rotifers. Mean lorica length of selected small adult females was 120 ± 6 μm at the time of collection, and this mean length did not increase over their lifetime. While their first offspring life span was only 5.11 ± 0.35 d, the reference population longevity was higher, 9.65 ± 0.4 d. The length of reproductive period of offspring from the small-size egg-bearing female was 2.58 ± 0.38 d, shorter than that of reference population 6.83 ± 0.58 d. Although the rate of egg production was not different between small egg-bearing female and reference population, the total number of eggs produced by the small egg-bearing female's first offspring was lower (4.78 ± 0.60) compared to the reference population (11.83 ± 1.26). The small egg-bearing female's first offspring had a higher egg to lorica length ratio (76.1 ± 1.64%) than the reference population (56.6 ± 1.3%), indicating a relatively high investment in reproduction. The small egg-bearing female's first offspring reached only 125 ± 6 μm in 36 h, and further culture of their offspring over 35 d resulted in a mean offspring size, 163 ± 11 μm, similar to the reference population (159 ± 16 μm). This shows that population mean size reduction is not likely to result from selecting small egg-bearing females within a single generation. The unique reproductive characteristics of small egg-bearing female place it in its own category.  相似文献

We estimated the stock size of Japanese sardine ( Sardinops melanostictus ) in the Sea of Japan and East China Sea since 1953 using cohort analysis based on the changes of growth patterns. Growth of Japanese sardine, estimated by using annual rings on archived scales since 1961, showed that body lengths were extremely stunted in the 1980–1987 year-classes. The body length at age 3 from February to April in the 1980–1987 year-classes, a period when the stock size exceeded 4 million tons, was 180.0 ± 2.6 mm (mean ± SD), and in the other year-classes was 195.1 ± 7.6 mm. The body length at age 3 and wet weight of zooplankton in August in the offshore area of the Sea of Japan had a significantly positive correlation. We assumed three scenarios for maturation ratios, and estimated Ricker's spawner–recruitment relationships. We analyzed the correlations between logarithmic recruitment residuals (LNRR) and environmental factors in winter, represented by the North Pacific index (NPI), Aleutian low pressure index (ALPI), Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), monsoon index (MOI), Arctic oscillation (AO) and Southern oscillation index (SOI). Significant correlations were observed between MOI and LNRR and between AO and LNRR. A combination of strong MOI and weak AO would increase the biomass of phytoplankton and zooplankton and subsequently increase the recruitment of Japanese sardine.  相似文献

This investigation examined the effects of temperature, density and early weaning on the survival and growth of Palaemonetes varians larvae. Survival of larvae raised at 17.5 °C was not significantly different (average + standard deviation) (94 ± 5%) from the survival of those raised at 19.5 °C (95 ± 5%) and at 21.5 °C (94 ± 4%). However, the duration of the larval stage was significantly longer for shrimp reared at 17.5 °C (17.3 ± 0.8 days) compared with shrimp reared at 19.5 °C (14.3 ± 0.7 days) and at 21.5 °C (11.3 ± 0.6 days). No significant differences ( P >0.05) were found in the survival rate, final weight and length of larvae reared at the densities of 5, 10, 20 and 50 larvae L−1. The survival of P. varians larvae fed solely on Artemia was significantly higher ( P <0.05) than larvae weaned with an artificial practical diet from Zoea II stage (94 ± 4% and 82 ± 1%, respectively, for Artemia and artificial diet-fed larvae), but no significant differences ( P >0.05) were observed in the final larval weight or length between these two treatments. The survival and growth of the larvae fed with the practical diet tested is a promising step ahead in the development of the culture of this species as it eliminates both the need for Artemia throughout all larval stages, and the need for more expensive artificial diets.  相似文献

Juvenile Haliotis rufescens were reared in the laboratory in order to investigate the extent to which fresh kelp and formulated feeds with 250 g kg−1 (25P) and 380 g kg−1 protein content (38P) affected their growth rate, gut residence time (GRT), food consumption ( C ), food conversion ratio (FCR) and digestibility. Abalone from 38P attained the highest growth rate (70.5 ± 4.2 μm day−1; 98.3 ± 6.95 μg day−1), followed by 25P (47.9 ± 2.79 μm day−1; 67.4 ± 2.82 μg day−1) and kelp (23.6 ± 3.36 μm day−1; 28.2 ± 4.11 μg day−1). No significant differences were observed in consumption rate among treatments (0.61–0.68% body weight per day), yet kelp-fed abalone exhibited higher FCR (2.44), protein efficiency ratio (4.42), and apparent digestibility of dry matter (69.5%), protein (69.8%) and gross energy (79.2%) than 38P organisms (59.8, 62.4 and 62.2%, respectively). They also showed longer GRT (23.1 ± 0.93 h). This study demonstrated that formulated diets with 250 g kg−1 and 380 g kg−1 protein inclusion can sustain higher growth rates of juvenile H. rufescens than fresh algae. These differences seem to be due to the amount of dietary protein. Kelp meal appears to improve the consumption and digestibility of balanced diets, and its inclusion in formulated diets is recommended.  相似文献

Abstract. Based on a pooled sample of 367 specimens of juvenile Atlanlic salmon, Salmo salar L., from eight geographically distinct home rivers, stocks from Scotland and Newfoundland can be distinguished by meristic and morphometric character sets using discriminant analysis procedures. Reduced character sets require meristic counts of pectoral fin rays, dorsal fin rays, gill rakers and vertebrae, and morphometric measurements of standard length, pectoral and pelvic fin lengths, body depth and gape width. Regional differences based on these morphometric and meristic sets are substantiated by monomorphism at each MDH locus in Scottish fish in contrast to polymorphism at the MDH-1 and MDH-3 loci in Newfoundland fish. Only the morphometric discriminant function is highly accurate (>80%) in identifying home river origins of the fish examined with the discriminating power increasing with increased fish size. These findings for juvenile fish indicate that, while meristic, morphometric and electrophoretic criteria provide a likely means for distinguishing regional fish stocks, morphometric character sets would seem to offer the best possibility for identifying home river origins of adult Atlantic salmon in mixed fisheries.  相似文献
