Four 9-month-old Simmental male calves were presented with a history of sudden death. The necropsy and microscopic findings allowed a diagnosis of enteritis and severe intraluminal hemorrhage with blood clots in the jejunum, suggestive of jejunal hemorrhage syndrome.  相似文献

An 11-year-old male intact Staffordshire Bull terrier was referred for diabetic ketoacidosis. Abdominal ultrasonographic examination revealed a 5 cm × 2 cm intraluminal caecal mass-like structure. Exploratory laparotomy and typhlectomy were subsequently performed. Histopathology of the caecal mass-like structure was consistent with a caecal mucocoele, defined as a cystic dilation of the caecal lumen with stasis of mucus. This lesion has been previously described in humans, where it is termed an appendiceal mucocoele. The patient was euthanased 58 days post-operatively due to unrelated diabetic complications.  相似文献

Hemorrhagic bowel syndrome in dairy cattle: 22 cases (1997-2000)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
OBJECTIVE: To determine signalment, history, and clinical, necropsy, and microbiologic findings in dairy cows with hemorrhagic bowel syndrome. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 22 adult dairy cows from a single farm in Colorado. PROCEDURE: Medical records were reviewed for information on signalment, medical and reproductive history, the owner's chief complaints, results of physical examinations and ancillary diagnostic tests, treatment and response to treatment, results of microbiologic testing, and, if applicable, postmortem findings. RESULTS: Common clinical signs were acute signs of profound depression, decreased milk production, tachycardia, ruminal stasis, abdominal distention, and dark clotted blood in the feces. Rectal examination revealed distended loops of small intestine in 7 of 14 cows. Transabdominal ultrasonography revealed small intestinal ileus and distention in 12 of 12 cows and homogeneous echogenic intraluminal material compatible with intraluminal hemorrhage and clot formation in 4. Seven of 8 cows treated medically died; 9 of 13 cows that underwent surgery died or were euthanatized. Clostridium perfringens was isolated from fecal samples from 17 of 20 cows. The most common morphologic diagnosis at necropsy was severe necrohemorrhagic enteritis or jejunitis with intraluminal hemorrhage or blood clots. The most prominent histologic finding was severe, segmental submucosal hemorrhage and edema of the small intestine. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results confirm that in adult cattle, hemorrhagic bowel syndrome is a sporadic acute intestinal disorder characterized by intraluminal hemorrhage and obstruction of the small intestine. Clostridium perfringens was consistently isolated from the feces of affected cows. The prognosis for affected cows was grave.  相似文献

The need for surgical hemostasis in patients treated with anticoagulant medications is a concern. This study assessed a bovine-derived topical hemostat (FastAct, FA) using a partial hepatectomy hemorrhage model in anticoagulated rats. Ninety rats were randomly assigned to receive preoperative heparin, warfarin, or nothing (n=30/treatment). Within each treatment group, FA, saline, direct pressure (DP), electrocautery, or nothing (n=6/group) was applied to the hepatectomy site. Eight additional rats were used for assessment of the preoperative anticoagulant regimen. Rats that were not anticoagulated and received FA had faster clot times and less hemorrhage than those receiving DP (P<0.05). In warfarin-pretreated rats, FA resulted in faster coagulation times than saline or DP and less hemorrhage than saline (P<0.05). No differences were detected in heparinized rats. Across all groups, rats receiving FA lost less blood and formed clots more frequently than saline (P<0.05). FA may be useful to treat hemorrhage from hepatic lacerations in anticoagulated patients.  相似文献

Two beef cows were presented with a history of anorexia and abdominal pain. Both cows were euthanized. Necropsy revealed the presence of a segmental area of ulceration, necrosis, and intraluminal blood clots in the jejunum. We experimentally infected pigs with the African swine fever virus (ASFV) Armenia 07 strain (genotype II) to analyze the effect of different dose injections on clinical manifestations, virus-shedding patterns, histopathology, and transmission dynamics by direct contact. Each three pigs and four pigs were injected intramuscularly with 0.1 fifty percent hemadsorbing doses (HAD50)/ml, 101 HAD50/ml and 106 HAD50/ml of ASFV Armenia 07 strain, respectively. Each two of three pigs injected with 0.1 HAD50/ml and 101 HAD50/ml died by 10 days post inoculation. All pigs had a gross lesion of splenomegaly. Perigastric and renal lymph nodes were enlarged and resembled blood clots in nine of ten pigs. It was revealed that 0.1 HAD50/ml of this ASFV was sufficient to infect healthy pigs by intramuscular injection and caused sub-acute lethal disease. For the transmission study, two 8-week-old pigs were injected intramuscularly with 103 HAD50/ml of the same virus. Each of the experimentally inoculated pigs was co-housed with two 8-week-old naive pigs. All contact pigs exhibited clinical manifestations at 6 or 7 days after the experimentally inoculated pigs developed pyrexia. These findings suggest that this strain may spread slowly within a herd. Histologically, lymph nodes resembled blood clots were formed by severe blood absorption and followed hemorrhage result of disruption of the lymphoid sinus filling with absorbed red blood cells. The severity of the gross and histological lesions depended on duration after infection, regardless of the difference of injection doses in this study.  相似文献

Dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (DLVOTO) is a common condition in cats and humans. In this case report, a dog is described with DLVOTO secondary to severe intra-abdominal hemorrhage caused by a hemangiosarcoma. The dog was a 9-year-old, 35.7-kg, spayed female German Shepard dog that presented with a history of tachypnea and collapse. A Levine II/VI systolic murmur was present at the heart base. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a splenic mass and a large amount of ascites. Echocardiography showed a reduced left ventricular diameter and an increased aortic velocity caused by systolic anterior motion (SAM) of the mitral valve apparatus. The heart murmur and the SAM were resolved after treatment including a splenectomy and a blood transfusion.  相似文献

Two adult Holstein cows were admitted with signs of acute gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Abomasal ulceration was diagnosed tentatively in both cows, but was later ruled out in 1 cow that had an abomasotomy performed through a right paramedian approach. Both cows failed to respond to treatment of blood loss and hypovolemic shock and became recumbent; one cow died and the other was euthanatized. Post-mortem examination determined the source of hemorrhage in both cows to be ulcerated small intestine with severe intraluminal hemorrhage. The cause of ulceration was undetermined. Small intestinal hemorrhage should be considered in cattle with signs of acute gastrointestinal hemorrhage.  相似文献

This study was conducted to assess time-sensitive magnetic resonance (MR) changes in canine blood using low-field MR. Arterial and venous blood samples were collected from eight healthy beagle dogs. Samples were placed in 5-mL tubes and imaged within 3 hours of collection at 1 day intervals from day 1 to day 30. The following sequences were used: T1-weighted (T1W), T2-weighted (T2W), fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), short tau inversion recovery (STIR), and T2-star gradient-echo (T2*-GRE). Visual comparison of the images revealed that four relatively homogenous blood clots and twelve heterogeneous blood clots developed. The margination of the clot and plasma changed significantly on day 2 and day 13. On day 2, heterogeneous blood clots were differentiated into 2 to 3 signal layers in the T2W, T1W, and especially the STIR images. Hypointense signal layers were also detected in the blood clots in STIR images, which have T2 hypo, FLAIR hypo, and T1 hyper intense signals. In all images, these signal layers remained relatively unchanged until day 13. Overall, the results suggest that hematomas are complex on low-field MRI. Accordingly, it may not be feasible to accurately characterize hemorrhages and predict clot age based on low-field MRI.  相似文献

Objective: To describe the clinical course of a dog presented with peliosis hepatis and hemoperitoneum in concert with anticoagulant rodenticide intoxication.
Case summary: A 7.75-year-old spayed female Shetland Sheepdog presented with clinical signs consistent with hypovolemia, hemoperitoneum, and a history of bright green stool 3 days before the onset of clinical signs. Initial packed cell volume/total solids were consistent with acute hemorrhage. A coagulation profile showed prolongation in activated clotting time and prolongation of both prothrombin and activated partial thromboplastin time, suggesting abnormal coagulation. Abdominal hemorrhage persisted in the face of normalization of the hemodynamic status and coagulation profile, and treatment with Vitamin K1. Abdominal ultrasound revealed multiple patchy hypoechoic areas throughout the caudate liver lobe. An exploratory laparotomy was performed 24 hours after presentation and revealed the caudate liver lobe as the source of the hemorrhage. Histopathologic examination of a specimen of the liver was consistent with peliosis hepatis. Toxicologic testing identified diphacinone levels in the blood consistent with anticoagulant rodenticide intoxication. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, and within 48 hours the dog was discharged. The dog returned to full function and a hepatic ultrasound performed 15 months postoperatively showed no significant abnormalities.

Cross-breed heifers given infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus by intrauterine inoculation 1 day after natural mating with a noninfected bull were killed on postinoculation days 4 to 14. When reproductive organs were examined for gross and microscopic lesions and for virus infection, the most severe uterine lesions were found in the body and caudal portions of the uterine horns of heifers killed between postinoculation days 4 and 9. Primary pathologic features were necrosis, edema, hemorrhage, and a diffuse accumulation of mononuclear cells, mostly lymphocytes; numerous lymphocytes were in mitosis. In cranial parts of uterine horns, the only lesions observed were a few small lymphocytic foci in the endometrial lamina propria. Lesions were not seen in the oviducts. In many heifers, the ovarian corpus luteum (CL) was cystic. In a few of these heifers, the cyst had a necrotic wall that was bordered by a zone of proliferating mononuclear cells. Focal necrosis and lymphoid proliferation were common in the parenchyma of cystic and noncystic CL. Similar necrotizing lesions were sometimes present in non-CL ovarian tissue. Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus was most frequently isolated from the uterine body, the internal os of the cervix, and the CL. Isolations were not made from blood samples taken at the time of necropsy. Isolation of virus from the CL correlated with the detection of luteal inflammation by light microscopy, but did not correlate with the presence of cysts. There also was no correlation between cystic CL and the severity of uterine lesions.  相似文献

Thrombolytic agents must be carried by the blood circulation to thrombi to exert their functions. Structural gaps exist between blood vessels and thrombi or in the area surrounding thrombi. Therefore, information about fundamental gap formation at thrombotic areas is critically important for thrombolytic therapy. We previously reported that t-PA accelerates the activities of bovine erythrocytes and hemoglobin (Hb) towards bovine plasminogen activation. Here, we examined gap generation by observing morphological changes during thrombolytic processes in rabbit blood clots deformation of erythrocytes from blood clots and Hb transfer from erythrocytes to serum in vitro. Rabbit venous blood samples (1 ml) were stored under sterile conditions in glass tubes at 37°C for 2, 24, 48 h, 1, and 2 weeks. We examined clot diameter, erythrocyte diameter and number as well as Hb volume in the serum, as well as histological changes in the clots. The diameter of blood clots did not change until 2 weeks after sampling. Erythrocyte diameter decreased within 48 h and at 2 weeks after sampling at the clot surface (p < 0.001) and interior (p < 0.001). The number of erythrocytes in the serum started to increase starting from 24 h after sampling (p < 0.01). Serum Hb volume also gradually increased from 24 h until 2 weeks after sampling (p < 0.01). The erythrocyte envelope became disrupted and cytoplasm started to flow through pores into the serum at 24 h. The results indicated that blood clots are reduced due to clot retraction, erythrocyte dissociation and cytoplasm leakage without a distinct fibrinolytic reaction. These results indicated that gaps start to form between 2 and 24 h after blood clotting.  相似文献

Objective – To describe a case of gastrointestinal tract perforation, septic peritonitis and coagulopathy caused by ingestion of multiple magnets in a dog. Case Summary – An 8‐month‐old castrated male Rottweiler, weighing 30.5 kg was presented for evaluation of vomiting and weakness. Abdominal radiography and abdominal ultrasonographic examination identified a metallic foreign object within the gastric lumen, presence of free peritoneal gas, and peritoneal effusion. Septic peritonitis was diagnosed by abdominal fluid analysis. Exploratory celiotomy revealed the presence of an omental abscess, and gastric and colonic perforations. Four magnetic foreign objects were found within the lumen of the perforated stomach. Surgical management including removal of the magnets, abscess debridement and excision, perforation repair, and abdominal drainage combined with intensive medical therapy resulted in complete recovery of this dog. New or Unique Information Provided – This report describes in detail the case management of a dog that developed both gastric and colonic perforations and severe morbidity secondary to ingesting multiple magnets.  相似文献

A 7-year-old male castrated domestic short-haired cat suddenly died. Gross examination revealed severe right-sided haemothorax with blood clots, four adult filarial nematodes in the blood clots and the caudal vena cava and haemorrhage dissecting into the tunica media of the right pulmonary artery. Histopathological investigation showed fibrosis of the tunica intima and disorganization/fragmentation of the elastic fibres accompanied by fibrous tissue deposition in the tunica media of both branches of pulmonary artery. Degenerative vasculopathy (intimal fibromuscular hyperplasia and medial hypertrophy/hyperplasia) involving pulmonary arteries was also observed. The polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing confirmed the identification of the parasite as Dirofilaria immitis. A diagnosis of pulmonary artery dissection with haemothorax and concomitant heartworm disease was formulated. Degenerative processes of the tunica media have been reported to cause pulmonary artery dissection in both humans and animals. Pulmonary artery remodelling induced by heartworms may be considered the underlying cause in the first case of feline pulmonary artery dissection, herein described.  相似文献

In bearded dragons, aneurysms are most commonly observed on the head and neck and in the cranial coelom. A nine-year-old male bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented for a ventral tail base swelling. Aspiration yielded frank blood, and Doppler ultrasonography confirmed an aneurysm by demonstrating pulsatile jets into the lumen. Three months later, the animal presented for acute regurgitation and tenesmus. Coelomic ultrasound showed a distended stomach and pyloroduodenal intussusception. An exploratory coeliotomy revealed a tortuous and distended ventral abdominal vein and mesenteric vasculature. The colon and cecum were markedly distended, and intracoelomic blood clots were discovered. Euthanasia was performed. Necropsy revealed a tail base aneurysm, presumably arterial. The walls of the aneurysm exhibited osseous metaplasia and smooth muscle replacement by fibrous connective tissue with no infectious organisms. This case report provides information on a differential diagnosis for tail base swellings in bearded dragons.  相似文献

Ninety-eight reproductive tracts from dogs at different postpartum time periods were used to investigate stages of normal involution. Seventy-eight reproductive tracts were obtained from the field, and 20 obtained surgically for gross and microscopic examination. Plasma progesterone was measured in 22 dogs at various times postpartum.

The uterine horns during the first week postpartum were dilated and edematous. The placental sites were 1.5-3 cm in width, rough, granular and covered with mucus and a few blood clots. By the fourth week the placental sites were thick, grayish-tan and nodular with a few blood clots within nodules. The uterine horns during the seventh week were greatly contracted and the placental sites were narrow and light in color. A few nodules were still present on the surface. By the ninth week the uterine horns were uniform in shape and contracted with a narrow lumen. The placental sites appeared as a narrow brown band.

Histologically the placental sites during the first week postpartum were covered by an eosinophilic staining necrotic mass and a few intact epithelial cells scattered on the surface as an interrupted single layer. Under the necrotic mass, large eosinophilic staining cells in moderate number were scattered throughout the lamina propria of the placental site. These cells were considered to be decidual cells. By the fourth week the placental sites were covered by a large lobulated mass of collagen fibers. The uterine glands were greatly dilated and degenerate, and mononuclear cell infiltration in the lamina propria was pronounced. By the seventh week, large masses of collagen fibers were detached from the surface, and endometrial glands were normal in size and shape. By the ninth week surface sloughing was completed. However, regeneration and replacement of the endometrial lining from the mouth of the uterine glands continued until the end of the twelfth week when the involution process was completed.

The progesterone levels were very low for eight weeks postpartum.

A 17-year-old Egyptian Arabian stallion was presented for haematuria and blood clots in the urine of 4 days’ duration. During micturition, haematuria was noted mid-stream with passage of blood clots occurring at the end of urination. Physical examination findings were unremarkable aside from pale mucous membranes. Cystoscopic examination revealed intermittent passage of frank blood (with clots) from the left ureteral orifice compared to grossly normal-appearing urine issuing from the right ureteral orifice. Transcutaneous ultrasonographic evaluation of the right kidney yielded normal findings while the left kidney exhibited pyelectasia, a decreased cortico-medullary ratio, and markedly increased echogenicity of the renal pelvis. Diagnosis of idiopathic renal haematuria was confirmed at necropsy.  相似文献

A three-month-old male Bull Terrier was referred to the Animal Medical Centre, Nihon University with chief complaints of subacute emesis and lethargy. Severe leukocytosis, high CRP, hypercalcemia and hypochloremia were detected. Moreover, severe calcification of gingival mucosa and abdominal skin, and abnormalities of the skeletal system were discerned. Abdominal X-ray and endoscopic examination revealed ulcer and hemorrhage on the mucosal membrane of the stomach. This might have been due to injections of high dose vitamin D at 3 and 2 weeks ago by another practioner, according to the detailed history of medication. After two months, a gastrointestinal and skin disorder disappeared, although calcification of the stomach membranes remained and abnormality of the skeletal system had worsened. Therefore, vitamin D should be carefully administrated to a puppy.  相似文献

Factor XII deficiency and impaired prekallikrein activity were diagnosed in a 1-year-old Chinese Shar Pei. The dog experienced repeated episodes of intestinal hemorrhage and diarrhea. Laboratory findings were compatible with blood loss (iron deficiency anemia and hypoproteinemia). Necropsy findings suggested mild infiltrative bowel disease that could have been responsible for the dog's diarrhea, but no explanation for the severe recurrent gastrointestinal hemorrhage could be found. Factor XII deficiency is uncommon in the dog and is not associated with hemorrhagic tendencies. The factor XII deficiency in this case may have contributed to the gastrointestinal hemorrhage.  相似文献
