Six fiberglass casting tapes were evaluated in bending, using an unstable fracture model. Cylindrical casts were constructed and evaluated in bending at 2, 3, and 24 hours after application. Scotchcast Plus (3M, St. Paul, MN), Vet Cast II (3M), and Zim-Flex (Zimmer, Warsaw, IN) were significantly stronger than other materials at 2 hours; however, by 24 hours, casts constructed from Delta-Lite (Johnson & Johnson Products, New Brunswick, NJ) were strongest. Delta-Lite Conformable casts were significantly weaker at all times.  相似文献

The physical and mechanical properties of four casting materials are compared with two plaster of Paris preparations. Properties evaluated include working and specific strengths, resistance to abrasion and radiolucency. Medical records of 5 calves with tibial fractures that were reduced and stabilized by transfixation pinning and casting were reviewed. Multiple Steinmann pins were placed transversely through proximal and distal fracture fragments, and the pin ends were incorporated in fiberglass cast material after fracture reduction. Cast material serves as an external frame to maintain pin position and fracture reduction. Calves were between 2 weeks and 6 months old and weighed between 40 and 180 kg. Three fractures were spiral in configuration and 2 were comminuted. One tibial fracture was open. After surgery, all calves were ambulatory within 24 hours. To improve tarsal flexion and achieve normal stance in 3 calves, cast revision was required on the caudal aspect of the limb. Good radiographic and clinical evidence of stability was observed in 5 to 10 weeks (mean 8 weeks), at which time the pis and cast were removed. Return to normal function was rapid and judged to be excellent at follow-up evaluation 3 to 12 months later. Advantages of transfixation pinning and casting in management of tibial fractures include flexibility in pin positioning, adequate maintenance of reduction, early return to weight-bearing status, joint mobility, and ease of ambulation. The inability to adjust fixation and alignment after cast application is a disadvantage of this technique compared with other external fixators.  相似文献

We reviewed the medical records of three calves with radial-ulnar fractures which were reduced and stabilized by transfixation pinning and casting. Multiple Steinmann pins were placed transversely through proximal and distal fracture fragments and the pin ends were incorporated in fiberglass cast material after fracture reduction. Cast material was placed from proximal to distal radius and served as an external frame to maintain pin position and fracture reduction.

At the time of injury, the calves ranged in age from one day to two months and weighed from 37-102 kg. Two fractures were comminuted and one was transverse. All fractures were closed. After surgery, all calves could walk within 24 hours. Radiographic and clinical evidence of fracture healing was present five to seven weeks (mean 6) after surgery. At that time, the pins and cast material were removed. Return to normal function was rapid and judged to be excellent at follow-up evaluation five to nine months later.

Advantages of transfixation pinning and casting in management of radial-ulnar fractures include flexibility in pin positioning, adequate maintenance of reduction, early return to weight-bearing status, preservation of joint mobility, and ease of ambulation. The inability to adjust fixation and alignment after cast application is a disadvantage of this technique compared with other external fixators. We concluded that transfixation pinning is a useful means of stabilizing radial-ulnar fractures in pediatric bovine patients.

OBJECTIVE: To determine in vitro effects of PBSS, milk, and bacteria-contaminated milk (BCM; contaminated by Streptococcus agalactiae) on properties of 3 synthetic absorbable suture materials. SAMPLE POPULATION: 3 types of synthetic absorbable suture materials (poliglecaprone 25, polyglycolic acid, and polydioxanone). PROCEDURES: Suture materials were tested to determine breaking strength and elasticity before (day 0) and after incubation in 3 media (PBSS, milk, and BCM) for 7, 14, and 21 days. A loop of suture material was elongated at a rate of 60 mm/min until it reached the breaking point. Tensile properties were statistically analyzed among media and incubation times. RESULTS: Incubation in milk and BCM significantly decreased breaking strength and elasticity of poliglecaprone 25, compared with results for incubation in PBSS. Incubation in BCM significantly decreased tensile properties of polyglycolic acid suture, compared with results for incubation in PBSS and milk. After incubation for 21 days, tensile properties of polydioxanone did not differ significantly among the media but were significantly decreased from values on day 0. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: On the basis of this study, poliglecaprone 25 is an inappropriate suture material for use in teat surgery. Polyglycolic acid suture should be avoided in teats of cattle with mastitis. Of the suture materials tested, polydioxanone was best suited for use in teat surgery, as determined on the basis of material testing after incubation in milk, even when the milk was contaminated with bacteria.  相似文献

Our objective in this study is to compare 4 of the most common bedding materials used by equine operations on the chemical and physical characteristics of composted equine stall waste. Twelve Standardbred horses were adapted to the barn and surrounding environment for 2 wk before the start of the study. Groups of 3 horses were bedded on 1 of 4 different bedding types (wood shavings, pelletized wood materials, long straw, and pelletized straw) for 16 h per day for 18 d. Stalls were cleaned by trained staff daily, and all contents removed were weighed and stored separately by bedding material on a level covered concrete pad for the duration of the study. Compost piles were constructed using 3 replicate piles of each bedding type in a randomized complete block design. Each pile was equipped with a temperature sensor and data logger. Water was added and piles were turned weekly throughout the 100-d compost process. Initial and final samples were taken, dried, and analyzed for DM mass, OM, inorganic nitrogen (nitrate-N and ammonium-N), electrical conductivity, and soluble (plant-available) nutrients. Data were analyzed using the GLM procedure, and means were separated using Fischer's protected LSD test (P < 0.05). No significant temperature differences were observed among the bedding materials. The composting process resulted in significant reductions (P < 0.05) in DM mass for each of the 4 bedding materials. The composting process resulted in significant reductions (P < 0.05) in OM and C:N ratio for all 4 bedding materials. The composted long straw material had greater concentrations of total Kjeldahl nitrogen (P < 0.05), nitrate-N (P < 0.05), and ammonium-N (P < 0.05) than the composted wood shavings. This study demonstrated that incorporating a simple aerobic composting system may greatly reduce the overall volume of manure and yield a material that is beneficial for land application in pasture-based systems. The straw-based materials may be better suited for composting and subsequent land application; however, factors such as suitability of the bedding material for equine use, material cost, labor, and availability must be considered when selecting a bedding material.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the tensile strength, elongation, and degradation of 4 monofilament absorbable suture materials that undergo degradation by hydrolysis in specimens of canine urine with various physical characteristics. SAMPLE POPULATION: 4 monofilament absorbable sutures (polydioxanone, poliglecaprone 25, polyglyconate, and glycomer 631). PROCEDURE: Voided urine was collected from 6 healthy dogs, pooled, filter-sterilized, and prepared to provide 5 media: sterile neutral (pH, 7.0), sterile acidic (pH, 6.2), sterile basic (pH, 8.8), Escherichia coli-inoculated, and Proteus mirabilis-inoculated urine. Ten strands of each suture material were immersed in each of the media for 0 to 28 days. Tensile strength and elongation of each suture material were evaluated by use of a texture analyzer on days 0, 1, 3, 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28. RESULTS: Reduction in tensile strength was detected for all materials in all urine specimens over time. Polyglyconate and polydioxanone had superior tensile strengths in sterile neutral and E. coli-inoculated urine, and polydioxanone retained the greatest tensile strength throughout the study period. All suture materials disintegrated before day 7 in P. mirabilis-inoculated urine. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Polydioxanone, polyglyconate, and glycomer 631 may be acceptable for urinary bladder closure in the presence of sterile neutral and E. coli-contaminated urine. Tensile strength of poliglecaprone 25 in urine may be unacceptable by the critical healing time for bladder tissue (14 to 21 days). During bladder surgery, exposure of suture material that degrades via hydrolysis to urine containing Proteus spp should be minimized.  相似文献

Cylindrical casts constructed from 2, 3, 4, and 5 inch widths of fiberglass casting material were evaluated for strength in bending using an unstable fracture model. Five-inch casting material produced the strongest casts. The effect of longitudinal splinting with 2-inch fiberglass tape was evaluated in cylindrical casts constructed from 4-inch tape. Casts with splints on the compression side or with splints on both the tension and compression sides were stronger in bending than casts with a single splint on the tension side or casts without splints.  相似文献

About 70 years ago, when the so‐called polymeric science succeeded in producing synthetic materials and making it available to industrial manufacturing, August Schummer intuitively recognized and reconnoitred the use of these new materials for corrosion casting anatomy. Through the employment of this method, which was named after him, an epoch‐making step was achieved in the anatomy of corrosion casting. In the year that followed there has been a very successful progress in the exploration of blood vessels right through into the capillaries of the organs. On the occasion of the 100th birthday of August Schummer (born 13th of December 1902 in Sǎli?te near Hermannstadt, died 1st of March 1977 in Gießen), former Professor of Veterinary Anatomy at the Universität Gießen, we commemorate the life and work of this exceptionally talented and passionate anatomist.  相似文献

In this paper,a amphiphilic brush copolymer poly(propylene oxide)-graft-poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)(PPO-gPDMAEMA)was successfully prepared via the combine of anionic ring opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP).The target products were confirmed by GPC and1H NMR.This well-defined copolymer can supply a promising material as drug and gene carriers and protective materials.  相似文献

Although the term "compassion fatigue" is often used interchangeably with the term "burnout", they are two different concepts. Compassion fatigue stems from an overcommitment to work that involves caring for others and is considered by some to be a kind of secondary posttraumatic stress disorder. Because they often invest themselves deeply in the animals they care for, veterinarians, technicians, and other members of an animal health team may be particularly vulnerable to compassion fatigue. This article summarizes the current state of knowledge about compassion fatigue, describes its symptoms, and suggests ways to prevent or overcome it.  相似文献

We evaluated the biological scaffold properties of canine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) compared to a those of polypropylene mesh in growing rats with full-thickness abdominal defects. SIS is used to repair musculoskeletal tissue while promoting cell migration and supporting tissue regeneration. Polypropylene mesh is a non-resorbable synthetic material that can endure mechanical tension. Canine SIS was obtained from donor German shepherds, and its porous collagen fiber structure was identified using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A 2.50-cm2 section of canine SIS (SIS group) or mesh (mesh group) was implanted in Sprague-Dawley rats. At 1, 2, 4, 12, and 24 weeks after surgery, the implants were histopathologically examined and tensile load was tested. One month after surgery, CD68+ macrophage numbers in the SIS group were increased, but the number of CD8+ T cells in this group declined more rapidly than that in rats treated with the mesh. In the SIS group, few adhesions and well-developed autologous abdominal muscle infiltration into the SIS collagen fibers were observed. No significant differences in the tensile load test results were found between the SIS and mesh groups at 24 weeks. Canine SIS may therefore be a suitable replacement for artificial biological scaffolds in small animals.  相似文献

The goal of the present study was to investigate whether new PCR-methods would improve diagnostic of R. equi. In a first step, sensitivity and specificity of the PCR-methods in respect to the"gold standard" microbiological culture were determined. Secondly, sensitivity and specificity of both microbiological methods were evaluated in respect to the clinical diagnosis. The tracheobronchial secretions of 48 foals with pulmonary abscesses and of 37 healthy foals were evaluated by bacteriological culture as well as by four PCR-methods: aceA-, ideR-, vapA- and VP-PCR. In respect to the"gold standard" microbiological culture, the sensitivity of most PCR methods lay between 63.9 and 69.4 % except the vapA-PCR (27.8 %).The specificity of all PCR methods in this comparison was between 98 to 100 %. In this analysis, clinical diagnosis had a low sensitivity (66.7 %) and a low specificity (51.0 %). In respect to the clinical diagnosis, microbiological culture sensitivity was 50.0 % and specificity 67.7 9%. In this analysis, sensitivity rates of aceA-, ideR and VP-PCR methods lay between 33.3 and 37.5 %, sensitivity of the vapA-PCR was lower (10.4 %).The specificity of all PCR methods ranged from 78.4 to 86.5 %. In conclusion, these results show that the diagnostic potential of the microbiological methods"Culture" and "PCR" is different and that for the diagnosis of R. equi-pneumonia in foals the combination of microbiological culture with PCR should be used for examination of samples of the airways of foals.  相似文献

Incisional abdominal hernias in three horses were repaired, using synthetic mesh with a fascial flap overlay. The repair of large ventral abdominal hernias of horses can be accomplished by using synthetic mesh that is sutured across the defect. This material can be placed subperitoneally, retroperitoneal but subfascial, retrofascial and subfascial, or retroperitoneal but subfascial with a fascial overlay. Advantages of using this material are that it can be used for repair of large hernias, it is easy to apply, it is strong and flexible, and it is less likely to be rejected, when compared with other synthetic materials.  相似文献

The tensile strength of egg‐shell material is believed to play an important role in determining whether or not a shell will crack when exposed to an environmental insult. Experiments are described in which shell tensile strength was measured. It is concluded that:
  1. the force required to produce tensile failure did not vary linearly with the width of the piece of shell under test, but with its two‐thirds power;

  2. it varied linearly with the thickness of the shell;

  3. the line relating force at tensile failure to shell thickness did not pass through the origin but intercepted the thickness axis at between about 90 and 130 μm, indicating that the inner layers of a shell, up to about a third of its thickness, contributed little or nothing to its tensile strength;

  4. the slope of the line did not vary with hen or strain of hen, indicating that the shells did not differ in the tensile strength of the material constituting their outer layers (i.e. about the outer two‐thirds);

  5. there were differences between hens and strains in the magnitude of the intercept: shells of the same thickness but from different hens or strains differed in force at tensile failure;

  6. the existence of between‐strain differences in intercept constitutes prima facie evidence that the variation in this trait is under genetic control;

  7. there was a fairly large within‐egg residual component of the variance of force at tensile failure; it represents real variation in tensile strength between apparently similar pieces of the same shell and is believed to be an effect of chance in the distribution of flaws in the shell material;

  8. for any one hen the intercept is the same as that found when shearing strength is measured, so shearing strength (which can be determined easily, quickly and precisely) can be used as a predictor of tensile strength.

Implications for poultry breeders are discussed; it is suggested that they should select for shell strength instead of shell thickness, measuring strength as shearing strength.  相似文献

介孔材料是一种孔径介于2~50 nm之间的新型多孔固体材料,由于其具有较大的比表面积、优异的化学和热稳定性、孔径可调、密度低等特点而受到广泛关注,已成为一种极具发展前途的药物传递载体系统(DDSs)。然而,基于介孔材料的DDSs在临床应用还面临一些挑战。为了系统总结介孔材料在药物传递中的研究进展以及更加高效地开发基于介孔材料的药物载体,作者将介孔材料分别按照空间的分布有序性和化学组成进行分类总结,根据空间分布是否有序将介孔材料分为有序介孔材料和无序介孔材料;按化学组成分为硅基介孔材料和非硅基介孔材料。作者介绍了介孔材料常用合成方法,包括溶胶-凝胶法、水热合成法、微波合成法、相转变法和沉淀法等,其中溶胶凝胶法和水热合成法最为常用;同时也介绍了典型的、研究最广泛的介孔材料在化学药物和生物技术药物传递中的研究进展以及介孔材料种类、孔径大小、表面官能团和物理状态对其药物传递效率的影响。作者在文章最后讨论了基于介孔材料的DDSs存在的问题和未来的发展方向。  相似文献

为建立稳定表达乙型脑炎病毒(JEV) NS1蛋白的真核细胞系,本研究将编码JEV NS1蛋白的人工合成基因克隆到真核表达载体pCAGG-TK-neo中,构建了重组质粒pCAGG-opti-NS1.重组质粒经脂质体转染RK-13细胞,以含G418的选择性培养基选择培养,经细胞克隆纯化,以间接免疫荧光试验(IEA)筛选表达目的基因的细胞.结果表明,转染的RK-13细胞经G418加压及IFA筛选后,获得表达JEV NS1蛋白的阳性RK-13细胞系.经RT-PCR、western blot和IFA鉴定,该细胞系在传代至第15代后仍然可以稳定表达NS1蛋白.本实验获得了能够稳定表达JEV NS1蛋白的细胞系,为进一步开展JEV相关的研究奠定了基础.  相似文献

Optimal selection on a single identified quantitative trait locus (QTL) with four modes of inheritance: normal autosomal, sex-limited, imprinting and X-linked, was evaluated in four breeding structures: single line selection (SLS), two-way crossing (2WC), three-way crossing (3WC) and reciprocal crossing (RC) by comparing extra benefit from mate selection over index selection to demonstrate effectiveness of mate selection in exploiting non-additive QTL. The results showed that the superiority varied at different QTL inheritance modes, initial favourable allele frequencies and breeding structures. The superiority tended to decrease with the increase of the favourable allele frequency except for over-dominant QTL and imprinted QTL in all breeding structures. Less superiority (below 9%) was observed for a recessive and a fully dominant QTL than for an over-dominant QTL (up to 27.11%). Normal autosomal and sex-linked QTL led to a similar trend of superiority from mate selection but the magnitude of the superiority with the latter was slightly higher than with the former for most combinations of the parameters. A high superiority (6.41-41.54%) was observed from mate selection over index selection for an imprinted QTL. A maternally imprinted QTL tended to lead to higher superiority from mate selection than a paternally imprinted QTL. X-linked QTL led to less superiority from mate selection than the other modes of QTL. A larger superiority from mate selection was observed for a recessive and a fully dominant QTL in structures 3WC and 2WC than structures RC and SLS. The superiority from autosomal QTL and X-linked QTL was lower in the structure RC than in other structures examined.  相似文献

Objective— To compare biomechanical properties of 3 new generation polyethylene sutures (FiberTape [FT], FiberWire [FW], and OrthoFiber [OF]) with nylon leader line (NL) for use during extraarticular fixation of cranial cruciate deficient stifles. Study Design— In vitro biomechanical testing of suture loops under monotonic tensile and cyclical loading until failure. Sample Population— Constructs of FT, FW, OF, and NL. Methods— Twenty loops of each of 12 combinations of fixation and suture had monotonic tensile and cyclical loading. Two knotting techniques (square knot [SQ], slip knot [SL]) and a crimp clamp (CR) system were evaluated. Elongation, stiffness, and strength of constructs was tested. The main effects of group, loop material, and their interaction were evaluated. Results— Knotted FT, FW, and OF had less elongation than knotted NL under monotonic tensile and cyclical loading. Under monotonic tensile loading, knotted FT and OF were stiffer than knotted NL. CR FT, CR FW, and CR OF were stiffer than CR NL and CR FT, CR FW, and CR OF were stiffer than knotted FT, FW, and OF. FW and OF knotted loops were weaker than knotted NL. CR FT was stronger than CR NL. CR FT and CR OF were weaker than knotted FT and OF. Conclusions— Polyethylene sutures are stronger, stiffer and elongate less than nylon leader. Crimping suture alters the biomechanical properties of the loop. Clinical Relevance— FW, FT, and OF may perform better in reconstructive procedures, where increased strength and stiffness are considered to be beneficial.  相似文献

We present a statistical framework for the comparative evaluation of ectoparasiticide efficacy in controlled animal studies. Such a comparative evaluation can have one of two objectives: an assessment of non-inferiority of a test parasiticide to a reference parasiticide, or an assessment of superiority of one treatment over another. We show that the observed efficacy of an ectoparasiticide can be viewed as a point estimate of its conditional "kill" probability. Thus concepts used in the comparative evaluation of human antibiotics, which involve the comparison of cure probabilities, can be applied to the situation of comparing parasiticide efficacy. In particular, we define non-inferiority of a test parasiticide to a reference parasiticide in terms of the "test - reference" difference of their efficacies. We outline the hypothesis testing framework and associated statistical decision rules for declaring either non-inferiority or superiority. Both non-inferiority and superiority can be evaluated statistically using confidence intervals. SAS and R code for data analysis is presented, and the methodology is applied to a data set from a controlled animal study.  相似文献
