In order to study the aerosol transmission of arthropathic and amyloidogenic Enterococcus faecalis strains, preliminary aerosol experiments were performed. The experiments were carried out in empty isolators to assess the yield and viability of E. faecalis and Newcastle disease vaccine virus (NDVV) aerosol particles with time. NDVV was aerosolized because this virus would be used in combination with E. faecalis in a subsequent study. Concentrations of about 10(5) colony-forming units (CFU) of E. faecalis/ml of air were still found 30 min after the aerosol application. At 45 min, however, E. faecalis concentrations dropped below the detection level. The average E. faecalis concentration during the aerosol experiment was estimated at 10(5) CFU/liter. The NDVV aerosol generated an average of 10(4)-10(5) 50% embryo infective dose per liter of air. In these experiments, E. faecalis and NDVV aerosols were successfully generated despite considerable initial particle loss. The bacteria and virus uptakes per chick are discussed in case day-old chicks would be exposed to these aerosols.  相似文献

The diseases caused by pathogenic Escherichia coli constitute a major economic loss to the poultry industry. The development of a live oral E. coli vaccine to prevent or reduce diseases in poultry had been the objective of our work. Four spontaneous streptomycin-dependent (str-dependent) mutants were generated from a virulent avian strain that contains a mutation in the fur region of the chromosome. Genetic analysis of the mutants indicated that the str-dependent phenotype was due to a base change of C --> T at base 272 in the rpsL gene. The mutants were tested for attenuation using the day-old chick model. Day-old birds, in groups of 20, were either challenged with 10(6) colony-forming units (CFU) of the str-dependent mutant, the parent strain (containing the fur mutation), or the wild-type strain without the fur mutation. The parent strain and the wild-type strain were highly virulent, and 80% or more of the birds died. None of the birds challenged with the str-dependent mutants died, indicating attenuation of the mutants. The protective effect of the mutant as a live vaccine against the challenge with 10(6) CFU of the wild-type strain EC317 was investigated. Vaccination by both aerosol (day 1) and oral (days 14 and 28) routes using 10(8) CFU of the str-dependent mutant (EC1598) had no effect on the occurrence of cellulitis in the birds. Two vaccinations given as aerosol on day 1 and given orally on day 14 also had no significant effect on the occurrence of systemic lesions. Three immunizations on days 1, 14, and 28 resulted in a significant reduction in the number of birds with systemic lesions. Antibody titers prior to challenge were not predictive of outcome of challenge.  相似文献

A tracer study with broiler chicks was conducted to determine endogenous Mn excretion in response to graded levels of dietary Mn supply by the isotope-dilution method. Starting with 46 day-old chicks, low-Mn diets were fed for 12 days before 8 chicks were slaughtered for assessing the initial Mn status and 38 chicks each were given an intramuscular injection of 555 kBq 54Mn. Four groups of six birds each were fed, one bird per cage, diets containing 2.8, 9.1, 25.8, and 59.7 ppm Mn for 16 days before slaughter and carcass analyses. Two groups of 7 birds were fed the diets with 9.1 and 25.8 ppm Mn for 8 days. Mn supply significantly affected 54Mn excretion and its distribution among various body organs, especially the liver. The specific activity of Mn in excreta and in whole-body declined exponentially with time and differed between groups. Endogenous Mn in excreta was estimated on the basis that the specific activity of excreta Mn from day 9 to 12 and day 13 to 16 was reflected, on the average, by that of liver Mn on day 10 and 14, respectively. It averaged in the order of increasing Mn supply 12.5 vs. 12.0; 7.7 vs. 8.5; 3.9 vs 4.3, and 2.0 vs 2.3% of total excreta Mn. Total Mn excretion from day 9 to 16 averaged 88.9, 95.0, 97.9, and 98.9% of Mn intake.  相似文献

The acquisition of immunity to Eimeria maxima by chicks infected 18 hr after hatch with a single dose of 100 oocysts was investigated. In the first experiment, birds were moved each day to clean cages in order to prevent the possibility of secondary infection resulting from ingestion of oocysts passed in their feces. Immunity was measured at 4 wk of age by calculation of oocyst production following challenge with 500 oocysts or weight gain following challenge with 100,000 oocysts. Large numbers of oocysts were produced by infected birds following challenge, although numbers were significantly less than those from birds that had been reared in the absence of infection (susceptible controls). The weight gain of infected birds following challenge was significantly greater than that of susceptible controls but less than that of unchallenged controls. Thus, only partial protection had been acquired, whether parasite replication or body weight gain was used to assess the extent of immunity development. In a second experiment, acquisition of immunity at 4 wk by chicks infected 18 hr after hatch with 100 oocysts of E. maxima and reared in floor pens in contact with their droppings was investigated. Infected birds produced no oocysts following challenge, and weight gains were not significantly different from the unchallenged controls, which indicates that full immunity had developed by 4 wk. It is concluded that if oocysts of Eimeria species are used to vaccinate day-old chicks, reinfection by oocysts present in the litter is necessary for the establishment of protective immunity.  相似文献

Poultry represents an important source of Salmonella infection in man. Despite intensive research on immunity, little is known about the involvement of T cell sub-populations in the immunological response of chickens against infection with non-host-adapted Salmonella (S.) serovars. In this study, the T cell composition of blood lymphocytes (CD4(+)CD8(+); CD4(+)CD8(-); CD4(-)CD8(+); CD8(+)TcR1(+); CD8(-)TcR1(+), CD8(+)TcR1(-)) after oral administration of the non-attenuated S. typhimurium wild-type strain 421 (infection) or the attenuated vaccine strain Salmonella vac((R)) T (immunization) to day-old chicks was investigated and compared with non-treated chickens by flow cytofluorometry. Additionally, the occurrence of T cell sub-populations (CD4(+); CD8(+); TcR1(+)(gammadelta); TcR2(+)(alphabeta(1))) in ceca, spleen and bursa of Fabricius of the birds was studied immunohistologically. Blood samples and tissues were examined between days 1 and 12 of age.Chicks inoculated with S. typhimurium 421 or Salmonella vac((R)) T showed significantly elevated percentages of CD8(+)TcR1(+) in blood on days 7, 8 and 9, or on day 8 in comparison to control animals. The CD4 to CD8 cell ratio was about 3:1 in infected animals on day 5 of age. In the organs of treated chicks the numbers of CD8(+)(gammadelta) and TcR1(+)(gammadelta) cells had markedly increased on days 4 and 5 in ceca, 8 and 9 in the bursa and 9 and 12 in the spleen. Moreover, infected or vaccinated birds revealed larger quantities of CD4(+) and TcR2(+) T cells in ceca on days 4 and 5. As shown by double staining, the TcR1(+) cells in the organs of infected animals additionally carried the CD8 antigen.In conclusion, immunization of day-old chicks with the attenuated Salmonella live vaccine strain resulted in the same changes in T cell composition as seen after infection with the non-attenuated Salmonella wild-type strain, but at a lower level. The remarkable increase of CD8(+)TcR1(+)(gammadelta) double positive cells in treated birds indicates an important role of this cell sub-population in the immunological defense of chickens against Salmonella exposure.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to analyse experimental transmission of Mycoplasma synoviae, an avian pathogen. Three experiments using specific pathogen-free day-old chicks placed in isolators were conducted. In the first experiment, the birds were introduced in an isolator previously contaminated with a M. synoviae broth culture. After 34 days, these birds were eliminated and, for the second trial, the chicks were introduced in the same isolator without disinfecting. In the third assay, the chicks were placed in an isolator containing a mixture of food, feathers and dust collected less than an hour earlier from a M. synoviae infected laying hen flock. In the second and third experiments in order to exacerbate the M. synoviae infection, the birds were inoculated with infectious bronchitis (IB) virus. The presence of M. synoviae in the environment and in tracheal swabs was monitored by culture, a multiplex PCR (mPCR) detecting M. synoviae and Mycoplasma 16S rDNA and a multiplex RT-PCR (mRT-PCR) detecting the M. synoviae mRNA coding for a membrane protein and Mycoplasma 16S rRNA. In in vitro experimental conditions, M. synoviae mRNA and 16S rRNA were detected up to 20 min and 23 h respectively after mycoplasma death. In the first assay, the first infected bird was detected on the 13th day. In the second trial, culturable M. synoviae or viable M. synoviae were detected in the isolator for 3 or 4 to 5 days respectively after depopulation of the birds of the first assay whereas the first culture positive tracheal swabs were detected on the 33rd day, after IB inoculation. In the third experiment, the first infected birds were detected on the 54th day. Thus, the different assays showed that M. synoviae contaminated material (dust, feathers and food) can infect chicks, sometimes after remarkably long silent periods.  相似文献

Specific pathogen free day-old chicks were inoculated with a virulent strain of Mycoplasma gallisepticum. Birds received either danofloxacin (50 ppm), tylosin (500 ppm) or no medication in the drinking water from 24 hours after infection for three days. The effects of medication on mortality, weight gain, serology, lesions and reisolation of M gallisepticum 21 days following infection were studied. Treatment with danofloxacin and tylosin significantly decreased mortality and increased weight gain compared with infected unmedicated birds. Twenty-one days after infection, M gallisepticum was isolated from 96 per cent of unmedicated birds compared with only 6 per cent of danofloxacin-treated and 40 per cent of tylosin-treated birds, and the percentage showing positive serological tests was reduced from 100 per cent of unmedicated birds to 0 per cent of danofloxacin-treated and 29 per cent of tylosin-treated birds. In both cases, the proportion of positive birds from the danofloxacin-treated group was significantly lower than that from the tylosin-treated group. The occurrence of air sac lesions was also significantly lower in danofloxacin-treated than in tylosin-treated birds.  相似文献

Experimental infections of Salmonella typhimurium, S. agona, S. enteritidis or S. infantis were studied in chicks infected with Eimeria tenella. In all experiments, 4-d old birds were given 5 daily oral doses of approximately 10(4) salmonella organisms per bird. One day before this inoculation one group of birds received a single dose, in the range 1 X 10(4) to 4 X 10(4) sporulated oocysts of E. tenella per os whilst the other group was not inoculated and served as the control. Chicks were examined post morten 7, 10 or 14 d after receiving coccidia. With S. typhimurium infection, the number of salmonellas in the caeca of the E. tenella-infected birds was greater than in those infected only with salmonella. With S. agona and S. enteritidis, the counts of salmonella in the caeca and the numbers of birds positive for salmonella in the caeca and liver were greater in the E. tenella-infected birds. The rate of infection of S. infantis was not increased by caecal coccidiosis.  相似文献

Oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) containing cytosine-phosphodiester-guanine (CpG) motifs have been shown to be effective immunoprotective agents in murine models for a variety of viral, intracellular bacterial, and protozoan infections. We recently have shown that CpG ODN protects against extracellular bacterial infections in mature chickens. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of CpG ODN on Escherichia coli septicemia in neonatal broiler chicks. Two-day-old chicks, or embryonated eggs that had been incubated for 18 or 19 days, received 50 microg CpG ODN. Three days after exposure to CpG ODN, a virulent isolate of E. coli was inoculated subcutaneously in the neck of each bird. Birds were examined for 7 days post-E. coli challenge and dinical, pathologic, and bacteriologic assessments were conducted. The control group of birds that received no CpG ODN had a survival rate of 0% to 20%. In contrast, groups that received CpG ODN, either by intramuscular or in ovo routes, had significantly higher survival rates (P < 0.0001). Bacterial counts in air sacs were significantly lower when birds or embryos were treated with CpG ODN as compared with controls. A dose as low as 10 microg of CpG ODN, administered intramuscularly, was able to protect birds significantly against E. coli challenge. Formulation of CpG ODN with 30% Emulsigen did not enhance the protection. This study demonstrates that CpG ODN has systemic protective effects in broiler chicks against E. coli infections. This is the first time that CpG ODN has been demonstrated to have an immunoprotective effect against a bacterial infection in chicks following in ovo delivery.  相似文献

We report that reduction of virulence for day-old chicks was achieved after eight-times-repeated heterophil passage of Salmonella pullorum (SP). The virulent source strain SP-V caused 64% mortality and 89% internal organ as well as 89% cecal colonization 10 days after administration of 10(7) colony-forming units (CFU) to day-old chicks. Eight-times-repeated passage of SP in heterophils resulted in attenuated strain SP-A that was nonlethal and reduced colonization of internal organs from 89% for SP-V strain to 4.3% for SP-A strain 10 days after administration of 10(7) or 10(8) CFU to day-old chicks. Cecal colonization was reduced from 89% for SP-V strain to 0 for SP-A strain 10 days after administration of 10(7) or 10(8) CFU to day-old chicks.  相似文献

为研究鸭源鸡杆菌的流行病学特性,本研究采用从自然病例分离得到的鸭源鸡杆菌人工感染4日龄SPF雏鸡,通过形态学、PCR、荧光定量PCR和组织学等方法分别对感染后SPF雏鸡的组织脏器进行了细菌分离、检测和鉴定,用ELISA对其血清抗体水平进行检测.结果表明,人工感染鸡无临床症状,组织学检查感染鸡的肝脏、气管和肺脏组织均有损伤.人工感染后第3d和同居感染第2d鸡体内可分离出鸭源鸡杆菌,人工感染后第96d仍能够分离到鸡杆菌.ELISA方法证实人工感染后47 d和同居后32 d出现抗体高峰,持续2~3周,人工感染组和同居组抗体水平均高于对照组(p<0.05);荧光定量PCR检测病料结果显示人工感染组和同居组的气管组织中细菌含量最高.本研究表明雏鸡在4日龄即可感染鸭源鸡杆菌,并能通过同居传播,长期带菌、排菌;感染后抗体产生缓慢、持续期短.本研究为鸭源鸡杆菌的流行病学、致病机理研究及防治措施的制定等提供了参考依据.  相似文献

Groups of 25 chickens free of maternal antibody to reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) were inoculated with either third or seventh passage REV at either one or seven days of age. Some of the birds inoculated at day 1 with REV were inoculated with Salmonella typhimurium either concurrently or six or 13 days later while some of those inoculated with REV at day 7 were inoculated concurrently with S typhimurium. At day old, infection with S typhimurium alone caused the death of 12 of 25 chicks whereas in the dual infection, using the third passage REV, 18 of 25 birds died. Similarly no seven or 14 day old chickens died when challenged with S typhimurium alone, but previous day-old infection with REV caused a respective mortality of eight of 25 and five of 25 birds. With the seventh passage REV a similar pattern was seen. At day old S typhimurium infection alone killed seven of 25 birds whereas combined with virus the mortality was 14 of 25 and while S typhimurium alone killed none of 25 chicks infected at seven days old, the mortality in birds also infected with REV was 14 of 25. Combined virus and bacterial infections did not increase the proportion of feathering defects in birds surviving S typhimurium infections. There was a significantly higher proportion of feathering defects in birds infected with third passage virus compared with seventh passage virus. Although a higher proportion of birds had antibody responses to REV in the seventh than in the third passage group, there was no discernible difference in the effect the different viruses had on chickens' susceptibility to S typhimurium.  相似文献

Proventriculitis of broilers can be reproduced by oral inoculation of day-old chicks with a proventricular homogenate from affected 3-wk-old broilers. The objective of the following studies was to isolate from this homogenate viral and bacterial isolates that could produce proventriculitis. A monoclonal antibody to infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) was used to precipitate virus from the homogenate. A primary chicken digestive tract cell culture system was also used to isolate virus from a 0.2-microm filtrate of the homogenate, and a bacterium was also isolated from the homogenate. In trial 1, day-old birds were orally inoculated with either proventriculus homogenate or monoclonal antibody immunoprecipitated IBDV (MAB-IBDV). At 4, 7, 14, and 21 days postinfection (PI), 12 birds from each treatment group were subjected to necropsy. In trial 2, day-old birds were orally inoculated with either infectious proventriculus homogenate, suspect virus isolated in cell culture and propagated in embryo livers and spleens, or a bacterial isolate. Twelve birds from each treatment were subjected to necropsy at days 7, 14, 21, and 28 PI. In trial 3, treatments were maintained in negative pressure isolation chambers, and an additional treatment included virus plus bacterial isolate. Twenty-four birds from each treatment were subjected to necropsy at day 21 PI. In trial 1, infectious homogenate decreased body weight and relative gizzard weights at 4, 7, 14, and 21 days PI. Proventriculus relative weight was increased at days 7, 14, and 21 PI, and proventriculus lesion scores were increased at days 14 and 21 PI. Bursa/spleen weight ratios were decreased at day 14, and feed conversion was increased at days 4 and 21. The MAB-IBDV treatment decreased proventriculus and gizzard relative weights at day 4 PI, increased proventriculus lesion scores and bursa/spleen weight ratios at day 14, and decreased heterophil/lymphocyte ratios at day 21. In trial 2, all infected birds had significantly higher mean relative proventriculus weights at 21 days PI and had higher 4-wk mean proventriculus scores as compared with both control groups. In trial 3, birds treated with homogenate and birds treated with both suspect virus and the bacterial isolate had significantly higher proventriculus lesion scores; higher relative weights of proventriculus, gizzard, liver, and heart; lower body weights; and lower relative bursa weights compared with the saline control group. These studies suggest that infectious proventriculitis has a complex etiology involving both viral and bacterial infection.  相似文献

Enterococcus faecalis-related amyloid arthropathy was diagnosed in a sample of birds from a flock of brown layer parent chickens aged 57 weeks. E. faecalis was isolated from amyloidotic knee joints and from blood samples from lame birds. From this flock a smaller one was kept for production purposes to study the vertical transmission of arthropathic and amyloidogenic E. faecalis. Three batches of non-soiled and thoroughly disinfected eggs, to prevent egg-shell contamination, were collected for 6 weeks and submitted for incubation every 2 weeks. No joint pathology was found in the offspring chicks (n = 458) monitored for joint disease until 16 or 21 weeks of age. Fresh and candled eggs (infertiles and dead embryos) obtained at day 18 of the incubation period had negative results at bacteriological examination of the yolk sac, except one non-hatched egg (late embryonal death in shell) from which E. faecalis was isolated. Genotyping by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of all E. faecalis isolates obtained from blood and joints (except one) of the parent birds and of the non-hatched egg after Sma I digestion showed that all isolates were genetically closely related or identical to a known arthropathic and amyloidogenic E. faecalis strain. In this study, vertical transmission of E. faecalis, although it may occur on a small scale as shown by PFGE, did not seem to play a significant role. Conversely, the chronicity of the condition and the development of an immune response may have affected the efficiency of its transmission.  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of ochratoxin A (OA) on Escherichia coli-challenged broiler chickens. Day-old broiler chicks were separated into two groups of 92 chicks each, with one group fed a control mash diet, and the other fed a mash diet containing 2 ppm OA. On day 14, each group was further separated into two groups, with one group inoculated with E. coli O78 (1 x 10(7) colony-forming units/0.5 ml), whereas the other group was not inoculated with E. coli. After E. coli inoculation on day 14, four birds from each group were euthanatized at 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, and 21 days postinoculation. Escherichia coli infection caused dullness, depression, huddling, and diarrhea. Mortality was 14.3% in chicks infected with E. coli but fed no OA. Mortality increased to 35.7% in chicks fed OA and infected with E. coli. Decreased body weight and reduced feed intake were observed in chicks fed OA, and the effects were more pronounced in chicks fed OA and infected with E. coli. Increased serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, uric acid, and creatinine and decreased levels of total proteins, albumin, globulins, calcium, and phosphorus were observed in OA-fed birds. Escherichia coli infection did not cause significant alteration in any of the serum biochemical parameters. The presence of OA in poultry rations increased mortality and the severity of an E. coli infection.  相似文献

The effects of concurrent cage contamination with Salmonella typhimurium and Eimeria tenella on the establishment of salmonella infection in day-old chickens were investigated. Chickens were divided into five groups: uninfected recipient birds placed in a cage contaminated by donor birds infected with E. tenella and S. typhimurium; E. tenella-infected recipients placed in a cage contaminated by S. typhimurium-infected donors; uninfected recipients placed in a cage contaminated by S. typhimurium-infected donors; E. tenella-infected recipients placed in a cage contaminated by uninfected donors; and uninfected recipients placed in a cage contaminated by uninfected donors. Three identical trials were conducted. Recipient birds were necropsied 4, 7, and 11 days after caging. In the cage where donor birds infected with both organisms had been reared, S. typhimurium counts in feces and number of feces positive for S. typhimurium were significantly (P less than 0.05) greater than those in the other cages on days 0, 4, and 7 after caging. Moreover, in this cage, more chicks died, counts of S. typhimurium in cecal contents were greater, and more birds were positive for S. typhimurium than in the other groups. This suggests that S. typhimurium infection in day-old chickens is enhanced in cages contaminated with E. tenella and S. typhimurium compared with infection in cages contaminated with S. typhimurium alone.  相似文献

The anticoccidial efficacy of amprolium, clazuril, and monensin were studied in sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) infected with a mixture of Eimeria spp. oocysts. Five groups of four 1-day-old sandhill crane chicks were maintained on a crumbled ration containing no coccidiostat, amprolium at 2.2 ppm, clazuril at 1.1 ppm, clazuril at 5.5 ppm, or monensin at 99 ppm. After 2 wk on their respective feeding regimens, birds in each of the five groups were administered 25 x 10(3) pooled sporulated Eimeria spp. oocysts per os and observed for another 3 wk. A sixth group of four chicks served as nonmedicated, nonchallenged control during the study. Clinical signs and lesions consistent with disseminated visceral coccidiosis were observed in all challenged controls and birds fed amprolium and clazuril. Birds in these groups died 9-10 days after challenge. In contrast, only one monensin-medicated bird had clinical signs of disseminated visceral coccidiosis, and it died 13 days after challenge (DAC). This and an asymptomatic bird that were necropsied at study termination had less-severe gross and microscopic lesions of disseminated visceral coccidiosis. Two of three monensin-treated birds that survived challenge passed from 50 to 500 coccidial oocysts 11 to 18 DAC but were negative at study termination. Of the coccidiostats tested, monensin, at the dietary level of 99 ppm, was the only anticoccidial drug that provided protection against experimentally induced disseminated visceral coccidiosis in sandhill cranes.  相似文献

The effect of a Lactobacillus spp.-based probiotic (FM-B11) on Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) recovery was evaluated in liquid (Expt. 1) and lyophilized (Expt. 2) forms in two separate experiments with two trials each. For each trial, 80 broiler chicks were randomly allocated into two treatments: control and probiotic culture. All chicks were challenged with SE (approximately 10(4) colony-forming units [cfu]) upon arrival at our laboratory. In both experiments, probiotic culture was administered in the drinking water for 3 consecutive days at a final concentration of approximately 10(6) cfu/ml, beginning 1 hr after SE challenge. Cecal tonsils were aseptically removed at 24 and 72 hr postchallenge, followed by enrichment and plating on xylose lactose deoxycholate (XLD) agar for the presence or absence of Salmonella-typical colonies. In Expt. 1, a significant reduction (P < 0.05) in SE-positive samples was observed in both trials at 24 and 72 hr postchallenge. Additionally, in Expt. 2, the lyophilized probiotic decreased (P < 0.05) SE recovery at both 24 and 72 hr postchallenge compared with the control group in trial 1. In trial 2, SE evaluation was performed only at 72 hr after challenge and fewer (P < 0.001) treated samples were positive for SE. Results showed that application of either liquid or lyophilized probiotic culture in the drinking water for 3 consecutive days can help to reduce SE recovery from young birds, although further research is needed to elucidate the mechanism of this response.  相似文献

The relationships between the severity of lameness, the presence of tibial dyschondroplasia, and the frequency of dustbathing behaviour and duration of tonic immobility were studied in 96 broiler chicks kept from day-old in groups of four in wire-floored cages. Dustbathing was observed when the birds were given access for one hour to a tray containing sand or straw. The duration of tonic immobility and the severity of lameness were scored during weeks 3, 4, 5 and 6. After slaughter at 41 or 45 days of age the birds were examined for tibial dyschondroplasia; 34 birds were classified as having tibial dyschondroplasia and 54 had detectable lameness problems. Birds with tibial dyschondroplasia had a higher lameness score (P < 0.001), dustbathed on fewer days (P < 0.0001), and had longer periods of tonic immobility (P < 0.03) at six weeks than birds which did not have the condition. However, almost all the chicks, including those with tibial dyschondroplasia dustbathed on day 27 after they had not been given access to the tray for three days, significantly more than on days when they had not been deprived of the tray (P < 0.0001). Furthermore, lame birds and birds with tibial dyschondroplasia also dustbathed less with age. Studies of the vertical wing-shaking element of dustbathing confirmed that tibial dyschondroplasia reduced dustbathing (P < 0.05) and also showed that during the one-hour tests, sand resulted in more dustbathing than straw (P < 0.01).  相似文献

The effects of probiotics and maternal vaccination with an inactivated Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) vaccine on day-old chicks challenged with SE were evaluated. A 2 X 3 factorial arrangement was used (with or without probiotics; breeders nonvaccinated, vaccinated intramuscularly, or vaccinated intraperitoneally). Three trials were conducted in isolation cabinets and SE challenge was different between trials. The number of SE organisms per chick and the time interval between housing and introduction of seeder birds (hereafter called challenge) were 1.6 X 10(8) and 1 hr (Trial I), 1.8 X 10(6) and 12 hr (Trial II), and 1.2 X 10(4) and 24 hr (Trial III). SE recovery was assessed in ceca and liver at 3, 5, and 7 days postchallenge, and the number of colony-forming units (CFU) in ceca was evaluated at 5 and 7 days postchallenge. The number of SE (log CFU) in the ceca reduced 0.56 log (from 7.59 to 7.03) and 1.45 log (7.62 to 6.17) because of the treatment with probiotics in Trials II and III, respectively. The greater reduction in Trial III indicates the importance of the early use of probiotics on the prevention of SE infection. Treatment with probiotics resulted in a smaller number of SE-positive livers after 5 days postchallenge on Trial III. Although there was no significant effect of maternal vaccination on the number of SE CFU in the ceca, a significant effect of maternal vaccination on the SE CFU was observed in the liver, but not in the ceca at 5 days after challenge.  相似文献
