Shortened and weakened oestrous signs in dairy cows may cause a failure of oestrus detection and artificial insemination timing error leading to poor reproductive performance. The aims of this study were to investigate the duration of standing oestrus in high-producing dairy cows under a free stall system, to determine the duration of expression of secondary oestrous signs before and after standing oestrus (Expt 1) and to compare the duration and intensity of oestrus between cows and heifers (Expt 2). Cattle were checked for primary and secondary oestrous signs at an interval of 4 h. Heat detection aids were also used. In Expt 1, of 56 cows which were detected in oestrus, 36 cows (64.3%) showed standing oestrus and other 20 cows (36.6%) showed secondary oestrous signs only. Duration of the standing oestrus was 6.6 +/- 6.3 h on average (+/-SD), ranging between 2 and 32 h. The cows in standing oestrus showed secondary oestrous signs during a period from 9.6 +/- 8.1 h before onset of standing to 18.4 +/- 18.8 h after the end of standing oestrus. In the cows that did not show standing oestrus, expression of secondary oestrous signs were observed for 25.7 +/- 20.5 h, which was 7.5 h shorter than the average duration of oestrus in cows showing standing oestrus. In Expt 2, nine (82%) of the 11 lactating cows in oestrus showed standing, while all the 10 heifers exhibited standing oestrus. Average duration of standing oestrus was 6.4 +/- 4.3 h in cows and 6.2 +/- 3.9 h in heifers, respectively. It may be concluded that the duration of standing oestrus is substantially shortened in lactating dairy cows, and more than one-third of cows did not show standing oestrus. In cows showing standing oestrus, duration of expression of secondary oestrous signs before and after standing is not shortened. Duration of standing oestrus in heifers was as short as that in cows.  相似文献

This present study, was designed to establish whether Neospora caninum infection affects the fertility of high-producing dairy cows, and was based on yearly serological screening for neosporosis and on the confirmation of N. caninum infection in aborted foetuses. Assessment was made of 7518 artificial inseminations (AI) (applied to parous cows) performed in three herds. Of these inseminations, 2540 (33.8%) resulted in pregnancy; 34% of which corresponded to seronegative cows (2226 of 6556 AI performed in seronegative cows) and 32.6% to seropositive animals (314 of 962). Abortion occurred in 97 (30.1%) of the 314 pregnancies recorded in dams seropositive for N. caninum, while only 93 (4.2%) of the 2226 pregnancies in seronegative animals ended in abortion. Logistic regression analysis indicated no significant effects of N. caninum antibody titre, days in milk and milk production at insemination on fertility. Factors found to affect fertility were herd, season of insemination, lactation and insemination number, semen-providing bull and AI technician. Our results indicate that N. caninum infection does not affect the fertility of high-producing dairy cows.  相似文献

A re-evaluation of results from ten trials conducted in commercial dairy herds between 1974 and 1981 in which lactating dairy cows were injected once or twice with either of two forms of prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF) showed that: the variation in the post-injection interval to oestrus was influenced by the stage of the oestrous cycle at which treatment was administered; this variation was sufficient to reduce pregnancy rates to set-time inseminations; an accurate aid for oestrus detection, such as tail painting, should be used routinely with PGF; if PGF-treated cows were detected in oestrus before being inseminated, the pregnancy rates to first insemination were usually 10% higher than in untreated herd mates. The results show that PGF systems in dairy herds should not be used as au alternative to accurate oestrus detection. These systems can be used to condense the breeding programme and increase pregnancy rates to first insemination. The exploitation of this fertility effect justifies the reassessment of PGF usage in New Zealand dairy herds.  相似文献

This report reviews the most recent developments in prostaglandin‐based oestrous synchronization programmes for postpartum dairy cows and addresses the efficiency of controlled breeding protocols based on such developments for cows with abnormal ovarian conditions. A double prostaglandin protocol applied 11–14 days apart seems to be capable of bringing most cows to oestrus. Because of varying oestrus onset times, improved conception rates are obtained following artificial insemination (AI) at detected oestrus rather than fixed‐time AI in prostaglandin‐treated cows. The administration of oestradiol or human chorionic gonadotrophin, or both these hormones, after prostaglandin treatment, improves the synchrony of oestrus yet does not enhance the conception rate. Progesterone‐based treatments for oestrous synchronization are considered the most appropriate for non‐cyclic or anoestrous postpartum dairy cows; prostaglandin alone being ineffective because of the absence of a mature corpus luteum in these cows. Improved oestrus synchrony and fertility rate have been reported using short‐term progesterone treatment regimes (7–9 days) with or without oestradiol benzoate combined with the use of a luteolytic agent given 1 day before, or at the time of, progesterone withdrawal. The ovulation synchronization (Ovsynch) protocol, based on the use of gonadotrophin releasing hormone and prostaglandin, was developed to coordinate follicular recruitment, CL regression and the time of ovulation. This protocol allows fixed time insemination and has proved effective in improving reproductive management in postpartum dairy cows. However, timed AI following Ovsynch seems to have no beneficial effects in heifers, because of an inconsistent follicle wave pattern, and in anoestrous cows, given their lack of prostaglandin responsive CL. To date, there are several prostaglandin based, fixed‐time insemination oestrous synchronization protocols for use in early postpartum dairy cows with ovarian disorders such as ovarian cysts and acyclicity.  相似文献

In order to evaluate an artificial insemination programme and reproductive efficiency of dairy herds in Uruguay, a survey was conducted with five dairy farms, utilizing a total of 768 lactating Holstein cows. Precision of oestrous detection was assessed by one milk progesterone sample taken on day of breeding and was 11.1%. Two additional samples taken at day 10 and 23 were used to confirm ovulation and early pregnancy. Accuracy of pregnancy estimation by milk progesterone was 70.4%. Reproductive efficiency was determined by the analysis of records. Average intervals from calving to first service were 101 days and to conception 132 days and these were affected by parity, body weight and body condition at calving, but not at breeding, or by milk production. Oestrous detection rates and pregnancy rates were 37.5 and 15.6%, respectively. It was concluded that losses in reproductive efficiency in dairy farms of Uruguay in a seasonal artificial insemination programme were mainly due to unobserved heats, rather than incorrect oestrous detection.

Two groups of lactating dairy cows in each of 4 dairy herds were injected with either 0.5 mg (219 cows) or 0.3 mg (118 cows) of Ooprostenol (I.C.I.) The first group of cows were injected from Day 6 to Day 17 of the oestrous cycle (Day 0 — oestrus) and the second group from Day 6 to Day 12. The four herds were selected specifically because oestrus-detection procedures were thorough and reliable. Of the cows receiving the 0.5 mg dose rate, 54.3% were observed in oestrus within 4 days of treatment. The remainder were in groups which were: (i) in oestrus from 5 to 10 days post-treatment (20.5% with prolonged response intervals), and 11 to 20 days post-treatment (15.5% with unaltered cycle lengths); or (ii) experienced a “silent oestrus” in the immediate post-treatment period and either did not show oestrus for a further 3 weeks (6.4% in oestrus from 21 to 29 days post-treatment) or conceived to a single set-time insemination 72 h after treatment (0.9%). Use of the lower dose rate resulted in fewer cows being observed in oestrus within 72 h (43.8% v 31.4%) and a corresponding rise in the percentage experiencing a “silent oestrus” and returning to service (6.4% v 13.6%) or conceiving to set-time insemination (0.9% v 3.4%). Most of the unaltered cycle lengths occurred with cows being treated on Day 6 of the oestrous cycle. The pregnancy rate for the 171 cows observed in oestrus within 4 days of treatment and inseminated at 72 h, or 72h and 96 h, was 57.3%.

Records from this trial, as well as previous trials in which cows were injected with 0.5 mg of Cloprostenol, showed that 446 of 524 cows (85%) injected at from Day 6 to Day 17 of the oestrous cycle were observed in oestrus within 5 days (144 h) of treatment. Amongthese 446 cows, the interval to post-treatment oestrus was influenced by the stage of the cycle at injection. Whereas 89% of the oestrous responses in cows treated on Days 6 to 9 were observed within 72 h of injection, the comparable figures for cows treated on Days 10 to 13 and Days 14 to 17 were 48% and 70% respectively.

Variation in the post-treatment interval to oestrus is greater in lactating dairy cows than in heifers and is not resolved by using double-injection regimes. The reasons for this variation have not been identified. The most effective use of prostaglandins for oestrus synchronisation in lactating dairy cows requires the treatment of groups of animals at similar stages of theiroestrous cycles and their post-treatment insemination at observed oestrus. These requirements may limit the usefulness of this technology in herds with poor breeding management.  相似文献

The effects of early initiation of first service for dairy heifers on their fertility and productivity up to the third lactation were examined under constant raising and management conditions. Eight Holstein heifers in their early breeding regimens and eight Holstein heifers in their late breeding regimens were initiated to be bred at 12 and 15 months of age, respectively, and were first calved at 21.5 and 25.1 months of age, respectively, with bodyweights of 563 and 638 kg after calving, respectively. Early first breeding resulted in a lower bodyweight and a lower body condition score, but it did not affect the fertility or milk production during the first lactation of heifers as cows. The calving intervals of cows to the second and third calving were similar in early and late bred heifers. Although the early bred heifers had a significantly lower fat‐corrected milk yield at the second lactation than that of the late bred heifers, early breeding did not impair the productivity indicated by the mean milk yield per day from birth to the end of the third lactation with a shorter production period.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the fertility of sexed semen compared with conventional semen with regard to the puberty and breeding ages of Holstein dairy heifers subjected to double Ovsynch protocol with fixed time of artificial insemination. A total of 468 Holstein heifers were divided into two groups. The first group was 122 dairy heifers inseminated via conventional semen, while the second group was 346 heifers inseminated with sexed semen. The puberty and breeding ages of heifers were determined from the farm records. Estrus was synchronized using the double Ovsynch protocol. Numbers were estimated for pregnancy at 40 and 60 days post insemination, embryonic loss, and abortion. The results revealed that the heifers inseminated with sexed semen had a significantly lower first-service pregnancy rate (51.45%) than those inseminated with conventional semen (61.47%). Heifers achieving puberty before 350 days old had a higher pregnancy rate. Embryonic losses and abortion rates did not differ between the two types of semen. Holstein heifers subjected to Ovsynch protocol with sexed semen had an acceptable first-insemination pregnancy rate. Even the applications of sexed semen reduce the reproductive fertility and pregnancy rate in Holstein heifers.

Objectives were to evaluate effects of feeding a calcium salt rich in linoleic and trans -octadecenoic acids (LTFA) on synthesis of prostaglandin F based on its metabolite (PGFM), uterine involution and pregnancy rates in lactating dairy cows. Five hundred and eleven Holstein cows were blocked according to parity, body condition score and milk yield in the previous lactation. Primiparous and multiparous cows were randomly assigned to one of the two treatments consisting of calcium salt (2% diet dry matter) of either palm oil (PO) or LTFA from 25 days prepartum to 80 days of lactation. Cows were time-inseminated at 70 ± 3 days postpartum. Feeding LTFA tended (p = 0.08) to decrease the incidence of puerperal metritis (15.1% vs 8.8%). Primiparous cows supplemented with LTFA showed larger increase in plasma PGFM concentration at day 1 postpartum (17018 vs 6897 p m ). Pregnancy rate after first insemination tended (p = 0.07) to be greater at 27 days after insemination (37.9% vs 28.6%), and was greater (p = 0.05) at 41 days after insemination (35.5% vs 25.8%) for cows fed LTFA compared with PO. These results indicate that unsaturated fatty acids fed in a rumen inert form have the potential to modulate reproductive events and improve pregnancy rates in lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

Most dairy farmers are not certain whether immediate insemination or delaying the insemination is the best economic decision for a cow in oestrus. A model was developed for determining, based on herd and cow characteristics, the economic consequences of immediate or delayed insemination. The model was based on literature information and expert knowledge. In the model, the oestrus detection and conception rates were made cow-specific. The utility of the model was illustrated using a standard cow and data on 90 cows in oestrus (provided by 10 Dutch dairy farmers). The model suggested that for the majority of cows, the best decision is to immediately inseminate the cow in oestrus, but for most heifers with a flatter lactation curve the best decision was to delay the insemination. The economic effect of delaying the insemination was however small, on average -€18 per cow per year. Immediate insemination of an individual cow did result in relatively low economic benefits, but for a whole herd they can be substantial. This model can be used by farmers to help making the best economic decision for a cow in oestrus.  相似文献

A study was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID) and prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2alpha) in synchronizing oestrus in N'dama and Bunaji cows and heifers and the fertility following artificial insemination at the synchronized oestrus. A total of 116 cows and heifers (58 N'dama and 58 Bunaji) were used in two separate trials. In the first trial, oestrus was synchronized using a PRID, which was inserted for 12 days; in the second trial, oestrus was synchronized by giving two injections of PGF2alpha 13 days apart. Only animals that did not respond to the first injection were given the second injection. At the end of each treatment period, the animals were observed for oestrus for 7 days and inseminated approximately 12 h following detection of oestrus. Standing to be mounted was the single criterion used to judge an animal to have been in oestrus. PGF2alpha and PRID were both effective in synchronizing oestrus in N'dama and Bunaji cows and heifers. The respective oestrus response rates, pregnancy rate and conception rates for PRID and PGF2alpha were 85.7%, 53.6% and 62.5% for PRID, and 91.7%, 68.3% and 74.6% for PGF2alpha. N'dama cattle showed significantly (p<0.05) better oestrus response rate, pregnancy rate and conception rate than Bunaji cattle following both PRID and PGF2alpha treatments. The pregnancy rate and conception rate following PGF2alpha treatment were better (p < 0.05) than for PRID, although the oestrus response rate did not differ. It is concluded that both PRID and PGF2alpha are effective in synchronizing oestrus in N'dama and Bunaji cattle in the hot humid zone of Nigeria and the fertility to artificial insemination at the synchronized oestrus was normal and acceptable. Thus, PRID and PGF2alpha can effectively be used in intensive breeding programmes for the rapid multiplication and distribution of both cattle breeds, especially the N'dama, which is a unique and beneficial animal genetic resource for the tsetse infested hot humid zone of Nigeria.  相似文献

Abstract

A re-evaluation of results from ten trials conducted in commercial dairy herds between 1974 and 1981 in which lactating dairy cows were injected once or twice with either of two forms of prostaglandin F2∞ (PGF) showed that:

  • Key points
  • ? the variation in the post-injection interval to oestrus was influenced by the stage of the oestrous cycle at which treatment was administered;

  • ? this variation was suffkient to reduce pregnancy rates to set-time inseminations;

  • ? an accurate aid for oestrus detection, such as tail painting, should be used routinely with PGF;

  • ? if PGF-treated cows were detected in oestrus before being inseminated, the pregnancy rates to first insemination were usually 10% higher than in untreated herd mates.

The results show that PGF systems in dairy herds should not be used as au alternative to accurate oestrus detection. These systems can be used to condense the breeding programme and increase pregnancy rates to first insemination. The exnloitation of this fertility effect justifies the reassessment of PGF usage in New Zealand dairy herds.  相似文献

Ten cows and heifers (Group B) were inoculated into the uterus at oestrus with semen followed by IBR virus for the first insemination and semen alone if a second insemination was necessary. All animals developed infectious pustular vulvo-vaginitis (IPV), and 2 cows conceived to the first and 2 to the second insemination (pregnancy rate of 40 percent requiring 4.5 services per conception). This group was compared with 10 control animals (Group A) which were treated similarly but received tissue culture fluid instead of virus at the first insemination. Group A had a pregnancy rate of 90 percent requiring 1.7 services per conception. Natural mating of 4 bulls with preputial infections due to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus with 9 susceptible cows and heifers (group D), resulted in the production of lesions of IPV. The IPV infection did not affect their fertility (pregnancy rate of 89 percent requiring 1.4 services per conception) when it was compared to a similar group of females (group C) mated to the same bulls prior to infection with IBR virus (pregnancy rate of 100 percent requiring 1.2 services per conception). The 6 animals in Group B that were not pregnant and returned to oestrus 3 times were found on slaughter to have endometritis, salpingitis and vaginitis. A high incidence, 5 out of 18 (28 percent), of shortened oestrous cycles (less than 18 days) was a feature of the breeding pattern of this group. The undesirable consequences of distributing semen contaminated with IBR virus from artificial insemination centres are apparent.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of two doses of oestradiol benzoate (ODB) administered as part of a treatment designed to resynchronise returns to oestrus on the reproductive performance of cows in a controlled breeding program. DESIGN: Cohort study. PROCEDURE: Lactating dairy cows on two farms were treated to synchronise three successive oestrous cycles. An intravaginal progesterone releasing insert (IVP4) was used to synchronise the first oestrous cycle. The cows were then treated 15 days after the first treatment by reinsertion of an IVP4 that had been used to synchronise the first oestrus and administration of 1.0 mg of oestradiol benzoate (ODB) i.m. at device insertion. The IVP4 device was removed 8 days later and either 0.5 (n = 421) or 1.0 mg of ODB (n = 446) was administered 24 h later. Injections of (ODB) with or without the use of an IVP4 were used to synchronise the third oestrous cycle. Different synchronisation treatments were used to synchronise first and third oestrous cycles but differences were included in statistical models to account for variation in the data. This enabled examination of effects due to differences in the dose of ODB used to synchronise the second synchronised oestrus. RESULTS: The dose of ODB (0.5 or 1.0 mg) administered just before the second synchronised oestrus did not significantly (P > 0.10) affect the cumulative pregnancy rates over three successive rounds of artificial insemination, the mating start date to the conception intervals, the conception rates to the first or second insemination, the proportion of cows submitted for insemination at the second synchronised oestrus or the proportion of cows that were not pregnant yet failed to show signs of oestrous (phantom cows) identified within each herd. CONCLUSION: There was no difference in reproductive performance between cows receiving either 0.5 mg or 1.0 mg ODB after removal of used IVP4 devices that had been inserted to resynchronise them for a second insemination.  相似文献

The present study was performed to test fertility in single‐ovulating and superovulated dairy heifers after insemination with low dose sex‐sorted sperm under field conditions. Some parameters, including the dosage, deposition site and timing, were assessed with the pregnancy rates after artificial insemination (AI). Moreover, the use of oestrus synchronization in combination with sorted sperm was evaluated. Besides that, we also improved the embryo production efficiency in superovulated dairy heifers by optimizing the timing of inseminations and repartitioning the sexed sperm dosage among multiple inseminations. The conception rate (52.8%) in heifers after low dose (2 × 106) insemination with sorted sperm deep into the uterine horn did not differ (p > 0.05) from that (59.6%) of conventional AI (1 × 107 non‐sorted sperm) and that of deep insemination with low dose non‐sorted sperm (57.7%). There was also no difference (p > 0.05) between conception rates after single (51.7%) and double (53.8%) deep insemination with sorted semen. Heifers inseminated with sorted sperm at synchronous oestrus had a lower pregnancy rate (48.1%) than heifers at spontaneous oestrus (53.6%), but this did not reach statistical difference (p > 0.05). The average number of transferable embryos collected in vivo from heifers inseminated with sorted sperm (4.81 ± 2.04) did not differ (p > 0.05) from that obtained from heifers after insemination with non‐sorted sperm (5.36 ± 2.74). Thus, we concluded that the pregnancy rate after deep intra‐uterine insemination with low dose sorted sperm was similar to that of non‐sorted sperm, which was either also deposited at a low dose deep intra‐uterine or into the uterine body. Sychronization of oestrus can be beneficial in combination with sorted sperm to optimize the organization and management of dairy herds. The results from superovulated heifers demonstrated that our insemination regime can be used to obtain a comparable embryo production efficiency with sorted sperm than with non‐sorted sperm.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of key parameters (donor parity, milk production, post-parturient day, season and milk recording data) associated with efficiency of embryo recovery (ER) in Holstein cattle. Elite Holstein cows and heifers were selected for ER, while Holstein heifers were used as recipients. The numbers of transferable embryos (TEs) produced were not significantly different when analyzed in terms of donor parity, milk production, postparturient day and season. However, the numbers of TEs were significantly increased when the milk protein (%; P)/fat (%; F) ratio was over 0.95 and/or the milk urea nitrogen (MUN) was between 12 and 18 dl/ml. The results from ET showed no differences in pregnancy rates among Holstein heifers receiving other types, developmental stage codes and quality grades of embryos. The mean interval from ER to artificial insemination was 60.6 days. Moreover, 19 offspring that had milk recording data showed a similar milk yield performance to that of the donor cows. In conclusion, this study showed that in Holstein cows, embryos were recovered and transferred and resulted in production of viable calves. Furthermore, P/F ratio and MUN could be candidate indicators for selection of high-efficiency donor cows.  相似文献

A system for the artificial insemination fo beef cattle was described. The system involved preparation of the cattle and facilities, visual oestrous detection twice a day, drafting each morning and insemination of oestrous cows twice a day. The AI program was evaluated during the course of the program and at pregnancy test 35 to 90 days after the end of the insemination period. The insemination period was from 25 to 60 days depending on efficiency, with programs from 25 to 35 days being favoured. Results for 12218 first inseminations (65.9%) and 2222 second inseminations (57.8%) in 56 AI programs compared favourably with results in dairy AI. Pregnancy rates in lactating cows (70.5%) were significantly higher than in nonlactating cows and heifers (66.1%). Overall efficiency of well-managed AI programs were represented by 63% of cows put into a program becoming pregnant in a 29-day insemination period. Seventy-two per cent of the cows put into the program were inseminated yielding an 88% pregnancy rate. The efficiency of visual oestrous detection was 95% but this estimate did not include false positives. Efficiency of AI programs were effected by management, nutrition, infection, inseminators, facilities and the origin and type of cattle put into a program. Environmental factors such as handling, stress and thunderstorms did not effect efficiency except via a nutritional effect.  相似文献

Genetic correlations between body condition score (BCS) and fertility traits in dairy cattle were estimated using bivariate random regression models. BCS was recorded by the Swiss Holstein Association on 22,075 lactating heifers (primiparous cows) from 856 sires. Fertility data during first lactation were extracted for 40,736 cows. The fertility traits were days to first service (DFS), days between first and last insemination (DFLI), calving interval (CI), number of services per conception (NSPC) and conception rate to first insemination (CRFI). A bivariate model was used to estimate genetic correlations between BCS as a longitudinal trait by random regression components, and daughter's fertility at the sire level as a single lactation measurement. Heritability of BCS was 0.17, and heritabilities for fertility traits were low (0.01-0.08). Genetic correlations between BCS and fertility over the lactation varied from: -0.45 to -0.14 for DFS; -0.75 to 0.03 for DFLI; from -0.59 to -0.02 for CI; from -0.47 to 0.33 for NSPC and from 0.08 to 0.82 for CRFI. These results show (genetic) interactions between fat reserves and reproduction along the lactation trajectory of modern dairy cows, which can be useful in genetic selection as well as in management. Maximum genetic gain in fertility from indirect selection on BCS should be based on measurements taken in mid lactation when the genetic variance for BCS is largest, and the genetic correlations between BCS and fertility is strongest.  相似文献
