Intra-abdominal umbilical cord remnant infections were diagnosed in 21 calves during a 5-year period. The urachal remnant alone was involved in 15 calves, umbilical artery remnant alone in 1 calf, and the umbilical vein remnant alone in 4 calves. Both urachus and umbilical vein were involved in 1 calf. All cases were managed surgically by ventral celiotomy. Infected urachal remnants not extending to the bladder, infected umbilical artery remnant, and infected umbilical vein remnants not extending to the liver were dissected free of surrounding adhered structures, ligated proximal to the infected segment, transected, and removed. Infected urachal remnants extending to the bladder were similarly isolated and removed after resection of the attached bladder apex. Infected umbilical vein remnants extending to the liver were marsupialized. Of 19 calves available for follow-up from 1 to 32 months after surgery, 15 recovered without any postoperative complications, 3 had short-term complications, and 1 calf developed an incisional hernia.  相似文献

The umbilical arteries, urachus, and umbilical vein were scanned ultrasonographically in 13 clinically normal foals that ranged in age from 6 hours to 4 weeks. Sonograms were obtained using a 7.5-MHz sector scanner transducer placed across the midline of the ventral portion of the foal's abdominal wall. The umbilical vein was scanned from the umbilical stalk to its entrance into the hepatic parenchyma. The mean (+/- SD) diameter of the umbilical vein was 0.61 +/- 0.20 cm immediately cranial to the umbilical stalk, 0.52 +/- 0.19 cm midway between the umbilicus and liver, and 0.6 +/- 0.19 cm at the liver. The urachus and umbilical arteries were scanned from the umbilical stalk to the apex of the urinary bladder and had a mean total diameter of 1.75 +/- 0.37 cm at the bladder apex. The umbilical arteries also were scanned along either side of the bladder and had a mean diameter of 0.85 +/- 0.21 cm. These measurements and the ultrasonographic appearance of the internal umbilical structures from clinically normal foals can be used as references to diagnose abnormalities of the umbilical structures in neonatal foals.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To develop a laparoscopic technique using an endoscopic suturing device for the resection of the apex of the bladder and the umbilical structures in large-animal neonates. Study Design-Experimental study. Animals or Sample Population-Seven healthy male Holstein calves. METHODS: A laparoscopic technique for resection of the apex of the bladder was developed on 2 calf cadavers, then evaluated on 5 anesthetized calves. The calves were positioned in dorsal recumbency, and 4 ventral abdominal portals were used. The umbilical vessels were double-ligated using an endoscopic suturing device and subsequently transected. The apex of the bladder was transected between a row of laparoscopic clips applied near the apex and atraumatic laparoscopic forceps applied distally; then, the edges were apposed using an endoscopic suturing device. The dissected umbilical remnants were removed from the abdomen through a small incision centered at the umbilicus. One month later, the calves were euthanatized and a second-look laparoscopy performed; then, bladders were collected for gross and histologic examination. RESULTS: No major complications occurred during or after surgery. The endoscopic suturing device permitted both effective ligation of the umbilical vessels and closure of the bladder. During second-look laparoscopy, healing of the peritoneal surface of the bladder and umbilical vessels was assessed to be excellent in 4 calves. A focal adhesion of omentum to the bladder suture line was observed in 1 calf. Focal adhesions of the omentum to the umbilical incision site occurred in 2 calves. The bladder mucosa was completely healed at the surgical sites. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Resection of the apex of the bladder and umbilical vessels in calves can be accomplished laparoscopically using an endoscopic suturing device.  相似文献

We determined the position, dimensions, and structure of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra in 20 healthy, adult rams by use of ultrasonography. The findings were compared with those of seven rams with obstructive urolithiasis, thus establishing criteria for the diagnosis of urolithiasis via ultrasonography. A 5.0 MHz convex transducer was placed over the right paralumbar fossa to examine the kidneys, and a 5.0 MHz linear rectal transducer was used to examine the bladder and urethra transrectally. All examinations were performed on standing rams. The left kidney had a length of 8.4 ± 0.3 cm (mean ± SD), a width of 4.7 ± 0.3 cm, and a depth of 4.4 ± 0.3 cm. The diameter of the renal sinus of the left kidney was 1.5 ± 0.2 cm. The circumference of the medullary pyramids measured 2.8 ± 0.3 cm. Similar ultrasonographic measurements were obtained for the right kidney. The mean diameter of the bladder of 12 rams was 7.5 ± 2.8 cm. The diameter of the bladder could not be determined in the remaining eight rams because it was greater than 10 cm and therefore beyond the penetration depth of the scanner. The only part of the urethra which could be visualized ultrasonographically was the internal urethral orifice. It had a diameter of 0.2 ± 0.1 cm.

Ultrasonographic examination of seven rams with obstructive urolithiasis revealed a markedly dilated urethra and urinary bladder. Due to severe cystitis, the contents of the urinary bladder appeared as multiple, tiny, uniformly distributed echoes. The renal pelvis and medullary pyramids of both kidneys were dilated in four rams. In two rams, uroperitoneum and accumulation of urine in the abdomen were diagnosed via ultrasonography. In one ram this was due to a ruptured ureter and in one to a ruptured bladder. The results of this study indicate that ultrasonography is a useful aid in the diagnosis of obstructive urolithiasis.

Under field conditions, the diagnosis of foal's diseases relies almost exclusively on the physical examination. As the signs of illness in the equine neonate are frequently vage and non-localizing, the diagnosis of diseases may be problematic. This often causes misinterpretations and leads to ineffective prophylaxis and treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of diagnostic ultrasonography of the foal's abdomen under field conditions to provide an optimized technique and to describe the normal findings. Diagnostic ultrasonography of the abdomen was performed after obtaining clinical history and passing the physical examination of 25 foals without signs of abdominal problems. The foals were scanned in a stable box, being restrained by three persons in semi-lateral recumbency. Usually, sedation was not necessary. The ventral abdominal wall was clipped, a generous amount of ultrasound coupling gel was applied and massaged on the skin surface. The ultrasonographic examination was carried out using a portable sector scanner ("Microimager 2000", Ausonics) with 5.0 and 7.5-MHz transducers or a combined 5.0 and 7.5-MHz transrectal linear-array scanner ("450 Enhanced", Pie Medical). Employing the 5.0-MHz sector scanner first, the abdomen was explored from caudal to cranial in left and right semi-lateral recumbency. The 7.5-MHz scanner was used to attain higher resolution of certain structures. The sector scanner turned out to be suitable under field conditions and adequate to examine the abdominal organs. The transrectal linear-array scanner also provided the most important informations, although it was difficult to maintain a good contact area of the scan head. By ultrasonography it was possible to identify the urinary bladder, kidneys, spleen, liver and part of the gastrointestinal tract. Thus, application of ultrasound could successfully be performed on newborn foals under field conditions.  相似文献

Omphalophlebitis with liver involvement was diagnosed by ultrasonography in 13 calves. In the initial surgical procedure, the infected umbilical vein was marsupialized by cranial trans-location in a median celiotomy and was flushed daily until healing occurred. In a second surgical procedure, the contracted umbilical vein was removed. Nine calves were clinically healthy after treatment. One had reformation of two abscesses because of inadequate post-surgical treatment. One calf was euthanatized because of an intussusception of the small intestine, and two calves had adverse reactions and developed septic shock when some of the lavage fluid, which was applied under pressure, entered the systemic circulation. It was concluded that umbilical vein abscesses should not be flushed under pressure in calves younger than 2 months of age. The principal advantages of cranial translocation of the umbilical vein in a median celiotomy are that only one abdominal incision is required and that the infected umbilical vein tissue does not have to be passed intraabdominally to a paramedian position.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the distribution of drying times of umbilical cords of dairy calves and to determine if cord dryness is a reliable indicator of age. DESIGN: An observational study was undertaken in a spring calving herd in Victoria, of the umbilical cords of 188 calves (82 Friesian bulls, 82 Friesian heifers, 24 crossbreds). PROCEDURE: Umbilical cords were examined daily, visually and by palpation, until the cord to the junction of the skin on the abdomen of the calf was dry, shrivelled and inflexible. RESULTS: Drying times ranged from 1 to 8 days. By the fifth day of life, the umbilical cords of 96.7% of all calves, 97.5% Friesian heifer calves, 87.5% of Friesian bull calves and 100% of cross-bred calves were dry. If cord dryness only was used to select calves for sale, 91.3% of all calves, 86.4% of Friesian bull calves and 100% of cross bred calves could have been sold before their fifth day of life. If calves were selected on age only, 3.3% of all calves, 2.5% of Friesian heifer calves and 12.5% of Friesian bull calves would have been sold before their umbilical cord was dry. CONCLUSION: The dairy industry cannot rely on cord dryness alone as an indicator of age for selection of calves for sale and transportation. Cord dryness is a poor indicator of age.  相似文献

The left and right kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra of 29 female clinically healthy Saanen goats were examined via transcutaneous and transrectal ultrasonography. In order to establish reference values the examinations were performed using a 5.0 MHz linear transducer to scan the right caudal costal part of the abdominal wall, right and left dorsal flanks and right and left inguinal regions of standing goats. A 5.0 MHz intracavity probe was used for transrectal ultrasonographic examination of the urinary bladder and urethra. The kidneys were examined in longitudinal and cross section and assessed subjectively. They could usually be seen from the 12th intercostal space on the right side and dorsal right flank. The right kidney was 8.0 ± 0.67 cm long and the left was 8.4 ± 0.64 cm long. The ureters could not be visualized in any of the goats. The length of the urinary bladder was 5.1 ± 1.38 cm, and its largest cross-sectional diameter was 2.6 ± 1.01 cm. The urethra was seen in 23 goats and appeared as echogenic lines with no visible lumen. The transition from the neck of the bladder to the internal urethral orifice extended beyond the brim of the pelvis in only one goat.  相似文献

Ultrasonography utilizes high frequency sound waves between 2 and 10 MHz. Returning echos from reflecting surfaces in the body are displayed as two-dimensional images on a CRT screen. Ultrasonography is particularly useful for analysis of internal structures of parenchymal organs such as liver, spleen, kidneys, prostate and uterus, as well as fluid filled organs such as heart, urinary bladder, gallbladder, and pregnant uterus. The clinical examination is safe. Sector transducers with frequencies between 5 and 10 MHz are useful for dogs and cats.  相似文献

Veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus) and panther chameleons (Furcifer pardalis) are the most popular chameleons over the world, and consequently, two of the most frequent species presenting to veterinary practices. However, published studies on normal ultrasonographic anatomy for these lizards are currently lacking. The objectives of this prospective anatomic study were to develop an ultrasound protocol for evaluation of the coelomic cavity in these species and describe the normal ultrasonographic anatomy of the coelomic organs. Seventeen healthy veiled chameleons and 15 healthy panther chameleons were included. A linear 18 MHz transducer was used. Chameleons were sedated and restrained in right lateral recumbency by an assistant. Longitudinal and transverse images were acquired, and authors recorded qualitative and quantitative ultrasonographic characteristics of the coelomic structures. The kidneys, liver, caudal vena cava, hepatic veins, portal vein, gallbladder, wall of the stomach and intestine, gonads and, when distended, urinary bladder could be visualized during ultrasonography of the coelomic cavity in both species. The spleen, pancreas, and adrenal glands could not be identified. Findings from the current study supported the use of ultrasonography for veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus) and panther chameleons (Furcifer pardalis) with suspected intracoelomic diseases and provided normal reference information for future studies of these chameleon species.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of ultrasonography in the evaluation of abdominal distension in 52 camels (Camelus dromedarius). The conditions included trypanosomiasis (n=35), intestinal obstruction (n=12) and ruptured urinary bladder (n=5). Fifteen clinically normal camels were included as controls. Transabdominal and transrectal ultrasonography was carried out on all camels. In animals with trypanosomiasis, ultrasonographic findings included accumulation of massive amounts of hypoechoic abdominal fluids where liver, intestine, kidney, spleen and urinary bladder were imaged floating. Except in two cases of bile duct calcification and one of hepatic abscessation, no detectable abnormal sonographic lesions were detected while imaging the hepatic and renal parenchyma, and the heart and its valves and major blood vessels. In camels with intestinal obstruction, ultrasonographic findings included distended intestinal loops with markedly reduced or absent motility. In one camel, the intestinal lumen contained localised hyperechoic material that was consistent with a foreign body. Hypoechoic fluid with or without fibrin was seen between intestinal loops. In camels with ruptured urinary bladder, ultrasonographic findings included collapsed and perforated bladder, echogenic blood clots within the urinary bladder and peritoneal cavity, increased thickness of the bladder wall, floating intestines in hypoechogenic fluid and echogenic calculi within the urethra. Ultrasonography was considered a useful tool for the evaluation of dromedary camels with abdominal distension.  相似文献

Abstract

CASE HISTORY:?A 3-month-old female Warmblood foal was presented after displaying signs of colic with pyrexia for 5 days.

CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS:?The foal continued to show signs of colic, frequently passed urine, and was pyrexic with an elevated white blood cell count. The umbilical stalk was thickened but there was no evidence of purulent material. Exploratory laparotomy revealed an enlarged left umbilical artery remnant tightly adhered to the bladder wall. The left umbilical artery continued to an aneurysm involving the distal aorta. The foal was subject to euthanasia and post-mortem examination confirmed a spherical aortic aneurysm, in the dorsal midline caudal to the kidneys that contained a large thrombus. Histopathological examination revealed inflammation and necrosis of the tunica intima and tunica media of the left umbilical artery with suppuration and bacterial colonies evident in the periarterial tissues.

DIAGNOSIS:?Infected aortic aneurysm presumably caused by an umbilical artery infection.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE:?A previously undetected umbilical infection appears to have resulted in an unusual delayed complication causing signs of colic in a foal. Veterinarians should be aware of this condition, and the possibility that it may be a cause of signs of colic in foals. Diagnosis based on ultrasonography should be possible, but may require sedation, visceral analgesia and careful examination.  相似文献

A newborn male foal was diagnosed with a greatly enlarged urinary bladder (megavesica), a urinary bladder diverticulum, and a herniated and abnormal umbilical remnant. Approximately 50% of the cranial bladder including the abnormal structures was surgically resected; the foal recovered and was still asymptomatic 15 months after surgery. The aetiology of megavesica in foals is unknown but successful outcome may be achieved with surgical intervention and adequate medical support.  相似文献

A 5-MHz transducer was used transrectally to image palpable structures in the caudal portion of abdominal and pelvic cavities of 12 horses. In 8 healthy horses, structures scanned transrectally included the left kidney, spleen, urinary bladder, urethra, accessory sex organs in the male, portions of the intestinal tract, caudal portion of the aorta, and iliac arteries, and, in small horses, the cranial mesenteric artery. The transrectal technique was used to evaluate these structures in 4 horses with clinical signs indicating intrapelvic or intra-abdominal disease. Seemingly, transrectal ultrasonography provided diagnostic information about structures accessible to transrectal palpation.  相似文献

A urinary bladder tumour was diagnosed in a two-year-old female Maltese with haematuria and pollakiuria on the basis of ultrasonography and pneumocystography findings. The mass was resected, and the bladder was preserved at surgery. Histological and immunohistochemical examination confirmed the tumour to be a rhabdomyosarcoma, which has rarely been reported in small breeds of dog. There was no recurrence of the tumour at the original site in the urinary bladder two months later, when the dog died due to metastasis to the liver. This is believed to be the first report of bladder rhabdomyosarcoma in a Maltese.  相似文献

We determined the position, dimensions, and structure of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra of 62 female sheep by use of ultrasonography. A 5.0-MHz convex transducer was placed over the right flank to examine the kidneys, and a 5.0 MHz-linear transducer was used to examine the bladder and urethra transrectally. All examinations were performed on sheep in standing position. The left kidney was 7.1 to 8.9 cm long, 3.4 to 5.5 cm wide, and 3.3 to 4.7 cm deep. Diameter of the parenchyma and renal sinus of the left kidney ranged between 1.1 and 1.9 cm and 1.1 and 2.0 cm, respectively. Circumference of the medullary pyramids varied between 2.1 and 3.3 cm. Similar ultrasonographic measurements were obtained for the right kidney. The diameter of the bladder varied between 0.3 and 6.9 cm in 96.8% of the sheep. The diameter of the bladder could not be determined in 32% of the sheep because it was > 10 cm, and, therefore, was beyond the penetration depth of the scanner. The only part of the urethra that could be ultrasonographically visualized was the internal urethral orifice. It had diameter between 0.1 and 0.2 cm. The ureters could not be ultrasonographically visualized in any of the sheep examined. The urinary tract of 8 sheep was examined 10 times within 2 weeks to examine whether measurements were reproducible. The interassay variation coefficient determined ranged from 3.1 to 31.8%, although for most variables, it ranged between 5 and 11%.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

An outbreak of a disease characterised by very high mortality occurred in a group of nine calves (1B4 months old) in a zero-grazing unit 2-3 weeks after an introduction of an apparently healthy alien sheep into the calf pen. Five of the six calves which contracted the disease died. The main clinical signs observed were marked depression, persistently high body temperature (40,5-41,5 degrees C), copious mucopurulent nasal and ocular discharges, dyspnoea, bilateral keratoconjunctivitis with corneal opacity, enlargement of the superficial lymph nodes and marked erythema and/or superficial erosions of the buccal mucosae. At necropsy there were lesions in the upper respiratory and digestive tracts, lymph nodes, brain, eyes, liver, kidneys and the urinary bladder. The lesions were histopathologically characterized by fibrinoid vasculitis which was accompanied by lymphocytic infiltration in the parenchyma of the affected tissues. Based on the evidence of contact between the calves and the recently introduced foreign sheep, the characteristic clinical signs and histopathological findings, a diagnosis of sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever was made.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the usefulness of diagnostic ultrasound for the detection of umbilical defects in calves. The medical records of 25 calves having undergone an ultrasound examination and for which a final diagnosis was available were reviewed retrospectively. Ultrasound was accurate (p = 0.05) for the diagnosis of umbilical defects in calves. Overall sensitivity (0.89) and specificity (0.83) were similar. Ultrasound was a better predictor of abnormal (PV' = 0.94) than normal PV- = 0.71) structures. Ultrasound was a good predictor (p < 0.05) of disease and normalcy in all umbilical region subdivisions except the umbilical vein (p = 0.16). Specificity was greater than sensitivity in all areas except the umbilical stalk. Sensitivity was lowest (0.50) for detection of umbilical herniae and lesions in the umbilical vein. When multiple umbilical areas were affected, ultrasound identified all lesions in 4 of 7 calves. Criteria determined to be subjectively useful in the sonographic diagnosis of infection in umbilical remnants were gas andlor echogenic fluid in the lumen and a thickened, hypoechoic wall.  相似文献

Eighteen cyclic Shiba goats were used in this study. Estrus was synchronized with a single injection of 125 microg of a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin F(2)alpha (PGF(2)alpha) after detection of at least one corpus luteum by B-mode ultrasonography. Blood samples were collected from each animal on days 0, 7 and 21 post-mating for progesterone assay. Animals in estrus were either allowed to be mated by fertile bucks twice during estrus (group I; n=12) or not at all (group II; n=6). Ultrasonographic examinations were performed transrectally or transabdominally using a real-time B-mode scanner equipped with a 7.5 or 5 MHz transducer. All animals exhibited estrus 56.0 +/- 2.7 h after injection of PGF2alpha. The results show that the accuracy of the progesterone assay in diagnosing pregnancy on day 21 after mating was 80% for pregnancy and 100% for non-pregnancy, retrospectively. Ultrasonographic examinations showed that gestational sac and embryos heartbeats were detected on days 20.2 +/- 0.6 and 24.3 +/- 0.7 of gestation, respectively. Placentomes were detected on day 35.4 +/- 1.0 of gestation as small nodules (0.7 +/- 0.2 cm in size). At two months pregnancy, skeletal structures like skull, thorax and long bones were clear. Biparietal diameter of the skull and length of long bones could be used as an estimate of gestational age. The accuracy of detection of fetal number using real-time B-mode ultrasonography was 91.7% on day 60 of gestation. In conclusion, progesterone assay at day 21 post-mating (cut-off value, 1 ng/ml) can be used for pregnancy diagnosis in goats. However, B-mode transrectal ultrasonography was more efficient due to detection of embryo and confirmation of its viability by heartbeats. In addition, fetal number and gestational age could be determined only by ultrasonography.  相似文献
