Bull calves (n = 143) were obtained from two strains of Angus and two strains of Hereford cattle for which replacements were selected on the basis of superior feedlot growth performance on either high- or medium-energy diets. From weaning to slaughter at 15 mo of age, bulls were fed either the high-energy (80% grain + 20% forage) or medium-energy diet (100% forage) corresponding to their strain. Bulls in high-energy diet groups had a greater (P less than .05) scrotal circumference at 12 mo, but not 15 mo of age, than bulls in medium-energy diet groups. Compared with Hereford bulls, Angus had greater (P less than .01) scrotal circumference (36.1 vs 33.9 cm) and greater (P less than .05) paired testes weight (570 vs 464 g) at 15 mo of age. Daily sperm production per gram testicular parenchyma (DSP/g) was affected by strain-diet (P less than .01) but not by breed. Bulls in medium-energy diet groups had 12% greater DSP/g than did high-energy diet bulls (17.4 X 10(6) vs 15.5 X 10(6)). Daily sperm production (DSP) was 9% and 30% greater (P less than .01) for medium-energy diet bulls in 1980 (8.2 X 10(9) vs 7.5 X 10(9)) and 1981 (8.0 X 10(9) vs 6.2 X 10(9)), respectively, compared with high-energy diet bulls. The effect (P less than .01) of breed on DSP was attributed to breed differences in paired testes weight.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effects of unilateral castration (UC) and induced unilateral cryptorchidism (UCR) on basal plasma luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone, and on the responses of these hormones to gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), were investigated in bulls altered at 3, 6 or 9 months of age. Blood plasma was collected before and after GnRH (200 micrograms) stimulation approximately 1 year following gonadal manipulation. Neither mean baseline concentrations nor GnRH-induced increases in plasma testosterone were altered (P greater than .1) by hemicastration or UCR (P greater than .1). Both mean baseline LH and GnRH-induced LH release were greater (P less than .05) in bulls altered at 3 months of age than in bulls altered at 9 months of age. UC increased (P less than .05) plasma LH response to GnRH over that observed in intact bulls, but not above that in UCR bulls. UCR had no detectable effect on either baseline concentrations or GnRH-stimulated LH release. FSH was increased (P less than .05) in hemicastrates, while UCR had a variable effect on peripheral FSH: FSH was reduced (P less than .05) in UCR animals altered at 3 months of age but increased (P less than .05) in UCR bulls altered at both 6 and 9 months of age when compared to FSH in intact bulls. The results indicate that, compared with intact bulls, UC bulls release increased amounts of both gonadotropins but similar amounts of testosterone in response to GnRH stimulation. UCR had a variable effect on FSH release and did not alter either LH or testosterone.  相似文献

Mean concentrations and the occurrence of pulsatile release of luteinizing hormone (LH) were determined in 14-wk-old crossbred boars (50.5 +/- 1.5 kg) after bilateral or unilateral castration at 10 wk of age. Blood was collected at 10-min intervals for 5 h. Then gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH; 40 micrograms) was given and sampling was continued at 5-min intervals for 1 h. Compared with intact boars, bilateral castration increased (P less than .001) mean LH (982 +/- 56 vs 389 +/- 56 pg/ml), pulsatile releases of LH (7.0 +/- .6 vs 2.0 +/- .6 pulses/5 h) and LH pulse amplitude (617 +/- 29 vs 360 +/- 58 pg/ml). Unilaterally castrated boars did not differ from intact boars in any of the above measures of LH secretion. Testis weight increased more between 10 and 14 wk of age in the unilateral castrates than in the intact boars (432 +/- 42 vs 245 +/- 34%; P less than .05). Thus, compensatory hypertrophy occurred within 4 wk of castration. Plasma testosterone was lower for bilateral castrates than for intact animals (.1 +/- .8 vs 3.6 +/- .9 ng/ml; P less than .05) while unilateral castrates (3.8 +/- 1.0 ng/ml) and intact boars did not differ. Plasma estradiol concentrations in bilateral and unilateral castrates were not different from levels found in intact boars (1.8 +/- 1.8, 8.8 +/- 2.1 and 6.0 +/- 1.8 pg/ml, respectively).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effects of unilateral castration (UC) and induced unilateral cryptorchidism (CR) on plasma hormones and testis anatomy were studied in 36 Holstein bulls altered at either 3, 6 or 9 mo of age (n = 12). Plasma hormone concentrations were determined in six samples collected at hourly intervals on d 0, 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30, and then at monthly intervals through 6 mo after gonadal manipulation. Although plasma testosterone (T) showed a transient decrease (P less than .05) immediately after treatment, mean plasma concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) and T were unaffected by UC or CR over the 6-mo period (P greater than .05). Both hormones increased (P less than .05) in concentration with advancing age. Plasma follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentration was greater (P less than .05) in UC than in intact (IN) bulls overall, while FSH in CR bulls did not differ (P greater than .05) from either group. At slaughter, 11 mo after gonadal alteration, mean testis weight, ratio of testis weight to body weight and mean testis sperm cell numbers were increased (P less than .05) in UC bulls compared with mean testis values in intact (IN) bulls. Unilateral castration increased (P less than .05) seminiferous tubuler diameter and seminiferous epithelial cell height from basement membrane to the border of the lumen, but did not alter the ratio of tubuler to interstitial space within the testis. Seminiferous tubuler diameter and epithelial cell height were increased (P less than .05) in CR compared with IN bulls. Unilateral gonadal alteration at 3 mo of age caused a greater (P less than .05) hypertrophy of the scrotal testis in both UC and CR bulls than alteration at 6 or 9 mo of age. Results indicate that unilateral gonadal disruption is followed by rapid compensation in testis T production, little change in systemic LH and a rapid increase in secretion of FSH in the bull within those ages investigated. Further, UC elicits a greater compensatory hypertrophy than CR and the pituitary-testis endocrine axis is more responsive to alteration at 3 mo than at 6 or 9 mo of age in the bull.  相似文献

The first phase of this study was the production of contemporary straightbred (SB) and reciprocal crossbred (F1) bulls by mating Angus (A) bulls to A and Santa Gertrudis (SG) cows and SG bulls to SG and A cows. Of the bulls produced during the 4-yr period, those used for breeding included 15 A, 15 SG, 8 A X SG and 8 SG X A. For 205-d weight and weight/day of age (W/DA) postweaning, A X SG had higher (P less than .05) performance than SG X A bulls and SG had higher (P less than .05) performance than A bulls. There was no difference (P greater than .05) between SG and A X SG for 205-d weight, postweaning average daily gain (ADG) or postweaning W/DA. Heterosis estimates were 5.2 (P less than .10), 9.9 (P less than .01) and 5.8% (P less than .01) for 205-d weight, postweaning ADG and W/DA, respectively. The second phase of this study was the comparison of SB and F1 bulls for reproductive and progeny performance by exposing them as yearlings to 25 Polled Hereford cows each. There were no differences (P greater than .05) among the four sire groups for proportion of cows exposed that had a calf, had a live calf or weaned a calf. Reproductive performance of sires also was evaluated in terms of number of days (NOD) from the beginning of the breeding period until calves were born. The NOD for calves by SG was greater (P less than .05) than for calves by A or F1 sires. Compared with calves from SB sires, the NOD for calves from A X SG and SG X A sires were 5.0 and 10.6 d (P less than .05) lower. Differences among sires within year and breeding of sire were significant for all preweaning traits and for W/DA postweaning of their progeny. The SG-sired calves were heavier (P less than .05) for birth and 205-d weight and had higher (P less than .05) postweaning ADG than A-sired calves. Mean performance of calves by reciprocal F1 sires did not deviate (P greater than .05) from the mean performance of those by SB sires. Calves by A X SG sires had higher (P less than .05) 205-d weight, postweaning ADG and W/DA than calves by SG X A sires. Results indicated that the primary genetic effects responsible for differences in performance of calves sired by F1 vs SB bulls were mean transmitted and mean heterotic effects.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Three levels of dietary P (.12%, .24% and .48% of dry matter) and three levels of roughage as ground corn cobs (25% 50% and 75% of dry matter) were fed in a 3 X 3 factorial metabolism trial, utilizing 36 crossbred (Hampshire X Columbia) intact male lambs, 6 to 9 mo of age. All diets contained cane molasses (5%), blood meal (13.5%), urea (1%), corn oil (1%) and salt (.5%). Limestone supplied supplemental Ca and treatment P levels were supplied by monosodium phosphate. Equal levels of corn starch and cerelose supplied the remainder of the diet. The diet was fed ad libitum, once daily. The highest P level (.48% P) resulted in a negative (P less than .01) Ca balance (-.23 g/d vs .12 g/d for .12% P and .31 g/d for .24% P groups), and apparent digestibility (P less than .01) of Ca (1.65% vs 17.18 and 22.2% for the two respective lower P dietary levels). Blood serum concentrations of Ca and Mg decreased (P less than .01) as dietary P level was increased. Apparent digestibility of Mg was decreased (P less than .05) by the highest P level (6.9% vs 21.58% and 18.80% for the two lower levels of dietary P). Level of roughage had no effect on Ca and Mg utilization; however, the highest level (75% corn cobs) resulted in improved (P less than .05) K balance (.85 g/d vs .30 and .50 g/d for the two lower levels of roughage).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A total of 144 male crossbred calves were allocated to four management treatments (bulls; steers; bulls implanted with zeranol at 100 d of age and re-implanted at 69, 93 and 56 d thereafter; bulls implanted with zeranol at 168 d of age and re-implanted at 93 and 56 d thereafter), and two pre-slaughter shipping treatments (minimum pre-slaughter stress with cattle shipped and slaughtered within 4 h of leaving the feedlot pen; moderate pre-slaughter stress with cattle mixed, trucked 160 km and slaughtered up to 24 h of leaving the feedlot pen) in a 4 X 2 factorial arrangement. Management treatment had no significant effect on carcass pH (45 min), carcass muscle temperature (45 min), or peak shear-force of cooked longissimus muscle. Steers had significantly lower dressing percentage, warm-carcass weight, hide weight and carcass-lean content, but higher marbling score, fat thickness and intramuscular-fat content than all treatments with bulls. Minimum pre-slaughter stress resulted in significantly lower dressing percentage, warm-carcass weight, and carcass pH (45 min), but generally had no effect on carcass tissue-yield measurements compared with the moderate stress treatment. Implanted bulls produced carcasses with significantly darker meat, higher 24-h pH and lower meat expressible juice than bulls and castrates for the moderate pre-slaughter stress treatment. These results provide evidence that zeranol implantation in bulls had a minor influence on carcass characteristics, and did not reduce the incidence of dark-cutting carcasses in young bulls subjected to moderate pre-slaughter shipping stress.  相似文献

The presence of free androgen (AR) and estrogen receptors (ER) was demonstrated in bovine skeletal muscle. Androgen receptor concentrations in neck muscle from cattle of different sexes and stages of development were related to hormonal status. In mature bulls (mean weight 600 kg), no free AR was detectable. Highest AR concentrations were measured in mature bulls (517 kg) castrated 24 h prior to slaughter (.85 +/- .21 fmol/mg protein). In female calves (155 kg), AR concentrations (.56 +/- .14 fmol/mg) were greater (P less than .01) than in male calves (.20 +/- .08 fmol/mg) of the same weight. Androgen receptors and ER in skeletal muscle of neck, shoulder, abdomen and hind leg of female and male calves were compared. There was no significant difference between AR concentrations in the neck, shoulder and hind leg, but concentrations were lower (P less than .05) in abdominal muscle. Estrogen receptor concentrations in neck, shoulder, abdomen and hind leg were not different between sexes (P less than .05). In male calves, ER content was lower (P less than .05) in abdominal than in other muscles. Estrogen receptor concentrations in muscles of female calves did not differ (P less than .05). The pronounced sensitivity to estrogens and androgens in the neck, shoulder, and hind leg of calves, being free of the respective hormone, may partly explain the characteristic conformation in calves treated with estrogenic and androgenic steroids and the sexual dimorphism of muscle growth.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the interrelationships of the various sexual and aggressive behaviors exhibited by Hereford bulls in sexual performance (serving capacity) tests and to determine the extent to which these interrelationships change with age (maturity). Correlation matrices were constructed for the frequencies of sexual and aggressive behaviors exhibited by two groups of 13 and 14 bulls, respectively, during 120-min tests with females when the bulls were 12, 18, and 24 mo of age. The frequencies of selected sexual behaviors recorded during individual tests at 18, 21, and 24 mo were factor-analyzed using a principle components analysis. Also, a comparison was made of the length of the refractory periods following various sexual behaviors at 12 and 24 mo of age. Bulls varied greatly in the way they responded to sexual stimuli. Few sexual behaviors were intercorrelated and the factor analysis of selected sexual behaviors was inconclusive. Frequencies of aggressive behaviors were more highly correlated. Age (maturation) did not affect the interrelationship of the sexual behaviors recorded. Aggressive behavior variables were more highly correlated at 12 mo than at 18 or 24 mo of age. The average length of the refractory period following ejaculation was longer (112 s; P less than .05) than the refractory period following mounts without ejaculation (50 s), and the latter had a longer (P less than .05) refractory period than mount attempts, mount intentions and head throws (26 to 38 s).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

One hundred ninety-five steer calves were assigned to five zeranol implant treatment (trial 1). Treatments were no implants (0000), two implants during the finishing period (00XX), three implants during growing and finishing periods (0XXX), one implant at 1 to 2 mo of age during the suckling period and two during the finishing period (X0XX) or four implants (XXXX). The growing period implant was administered at weaning. Weaning weights (211 vs 208 kg) of implanted and nonimplanted suckling calves were not different (P greater than .05). Calves implanted at weaning, before shipment to the feedlot, had greater (P less than .05) weight loss in shipment than nonimplanted calves. In the feedlot, finishing-period daily gains of steers implanted in the growing and finishing period (0XXX) were greater (P less than .05) than gains of steers that had received a suckling period implant (X0XX and XXXX). Nonimplanted steer gains were less (P less than .05) than gains of steers from the other four treatment groups. Postweaning daily gains and final weights were 1.18 and 517 (0000), 1.26 and 533 (00XX), 1.32 and 551 (0XXX), 1.26 and 540 (X0XX) and 1.25 and 533 kg (XXXX), respectively. Gains and final weights of nonimplanted steers were less (P less than .05) than gains of steers implanted only in the feedlot growing and finishing periods (0XXX). In a second trial, 82 steers were assigned either to a 0XXX or XXXX implant scheme. Weaning weights were 11 kg greater (P less than .05) for the implanted steers.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Sixty-three Angus x Simmental calves were allotted to a bull or a steer group based on sire, birth date, and birth weight to determine effects of castration status on performance, carcass characteristics, and circulating insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) concentrations in early-weaned cattle. At 75 d of age, calves in the steer group were castrated. Calves were not creep-fed prior to weaning. All calves were weaned and weighed at an average age of 115 d and transported by truck to the OARDC feedlot in Wooster, OH. Performance and carcass characteristics were measured in three phases. Phase 1 was from 115 to 200 d of age, phase 2 was from 201 to 277 d of age, and phase 3 was from 278 d of age to slaughter. Before implantation, four bulls and four steers were selected for serial slaughter and carcass evaluation. Steers were implanted with Synovex-C at 130 d of age and with Revalor-S at 200 and 277 d of age. Serum samples were collected from all calves on the day of implantation, 28 and 42 d after implantation, and at slaughter and analyzed for circulating IGF-I concentration. Bulls gained 9.7% faster (1.75 vs 1.60 kg/d; P < 0.01), consumed 25 kg more DM (521 vs 496 kg; P = 0.11), and were 3.3% more efficient (282 vs 273 g/kg, P < 0.10) than steers in phase 1. However, steers gained 10.5% faster (1.62 vs 1.46 kg/d; P < 0.02), consumed similar amounts of DM, and were 6.5% more efficient than bulls (214 vs 201 g/kg; P < 0.06) in phase 2. Overall gains and efficiency were similar between bulls and steers; however, bulls consumed 140 kg more DM (P < 0.05), were 27 kg heavier (P < 0.05), and had to stay in the feedlot 18 more days (P < 0.05) than steers to achieve a similar amount of fat thickness. Implanted steers had greater concentrations of circulating IGF-I than bulls (P < 0.01), and the pattern of IGF-I concentration over time was affected by castration status (castration status x time interaction; P < 0.01). Synovex-C had a lower impact on circulating IGF-I concentration (implant effect, P < 0.01) than either Revalor-S implant. Eighty-five percent of both bulls and steers had marbling scores sufficient to grade low Choice or better. Bulls achieved their target fat thickness later, increased muscle growth, and deposited fat more favorably than steers, possibly due to a gradual increase in IGF-I concentration as the testicles grew rather than the large fluctuations in IGF-I concentration observed in steers following implantation.  相似文献

The purpose of the following study was to determine the effects of group size and the male-to-female ratio on the sexual and aggressive behaviors of bulls in the context of serving capacity tests. Tests were administered to two groups of 13 and 14 polled Hereford bulls, respectively, under four test conditions in which the number of bulls and the ratio of males to females was varied. The test conditions were as follows: 1) individual tests (single males were exposed to single females), 2) small-group tests (three or four bulls:three females), 3) large-group tests (13 or 14 bulls:3 females), and 4) male-only test (13 or 14 bulls were placed in the test area in the absence of females). In addition, the sexual performance of 44 Hereford and 12 Angus bulls was compared when competing (small-group tests) vs not competing (individual tests) for females. Ejaculation rate (serving capacity) was similar in individual and small-group tests in which a male-to-female ratio of approximately 1:1 was maintained. Increasing the male-to-female ratio to approximately 4.5:1 enhanced levels of aggression and reduced overall sexual performance. Angus bulls were more aggressive than their Hereford counterparts when competing for females and exhibited lower (P less than .05) ejaculation rates in small-group tests than when evaluated individually. We concluded that the sexual performance of polled Hereford bulls can be reliably evaluated when tested in small groups as long as a 1:1 male-to-female ratio is approximated.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Three groups of 1/2 Simmental X 1/4 Brahman X 1/4 Hereford bull calves were used during two different years to study effects of zeranol on sexual development. At 154 d of age, half the calves were implanted with 36 mg zeranol and half, not implanted, served as controls. Implanted calves were reimplanted at 90-d intervals throughout the trial (9 mo) each year. Trial 1 was conducted with 24 calves and Trial 2 was conducted the following year with 10 bulls. Twenty-four days after weaning (200 d of age) and at 28-d intervals thereafter, bulls in drylot in Trial 1 were weighted, scrotal circumference (SC) was measured and an ejaculate of semen was collected by electroejaculation to determine puberty. At these times, bulls were given 200 micrograms of GnRH i.m. and blood was collected at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 h after GnRH. Serum concentrations of LH and testosterone (TEST) were determined. At slaughter, testis weight, length and circumference and pubertal status were recorded. Bulls implanted with zeranol had smaller SC than control bulls during the entire 9-mo period (P less than .0001). More control bulls reached puberty than did implanted bulls (82.4 vs 23.5%, respectively; P less than .001). Control bulls had larger testis measurements at slaughter (P less than .0001). Implants did not alter total weight gain or ADG (P greater than .10).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Metabolism and feedlot trials were conducted to evaluate increased dietary urea as a method of reducing detrimental effects of peanut skin (PS) tannins on nutrient digestibility and finishing steer performance. The PS fed in the trials contained 17.8% crude protein and 20.1% tannin. Urea (.7%) was included in a control (C) diet without PS, and with 15% PS in low-urea (.3%; LUPS), moderate-urea (.7%; MUPS) and high-urea (1.1%; HUPS) diets that contained ground corn and 15% peanut hulls. Apparent digestibility coefficients for dry matter, organic matter and crude protein were higher (P less than .05) for the C diet than for PS diets. Fecal N (g/d) was consistently higher (P less than .05) for PS diets than for the C diet. Retained N (g/d) was similar for steers fed C and HUPS diets, but lower (P less than .05) than C for LUPS and MUPS diets. Average daily gain at 91 d was highest (P less than .05) for C steers in the feedlot, intermediate (P less than .05) for MUPS and HUPS steers and lowest (P less than .05) for LUPS steers. Feed:gain ratio was 97% higher (P less than .05) for LUPS steers compared with C steers, but average daily feed intake was similar for all treatments. Rumen fluid propionic acid was lower (P less than .05) on all PS diets compared with the C diet on d 90. Plasma urea nitrogen (d 90) was reduced (P less than .05) by 48.5, 55.5 and 57.6%, respectively, on LUPS, MUPS and HUPS diets compared with the C diet.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Six Holstein (light-muscled type) and six Belgian Blue bulls (double-muscled type) were fed a finishing diet. Average daily gain was 1.36 kg for the Holstein bulls vs 1.24 kg for the Belgian Blue bulls (P less than .05). Holstein bulls consumed more feed (2.3 vs 1.8 kg/100 kg body weight, P less than .001) than the Belgian Blue bulls. The dressing percentage (55.4 vs 65.8%, P less than .001) and the proportion of muscle (56.1 vs 71.3%, P less than .001) in the carcass were less, whereas the proportions of adipose tissue (28.3 vs 15.4%, P less than .001) and bone (15.7 vs 13.4%, P less than .05) were higher in the Holstein bulls. Plasma creatinine determined in samples obtained once a week was lower (11.0 vs 20.3 mg/liter, P less than .001) in the Holstein bulls. In contrast, Holstein bulls tended to produce more triiodothyronine (2.3 vs 1.8 nM, P less than .10), tetraiodothyronine (71.9 vs 54.7 nM, P less than .10) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I; 340 vs 205 ng/ml, P less than .20) than the Belgian Blue bulls. Growth hormone, insulin, IGF-I and testosterone were measured at 20-min intervals during two 24-h periods. In wk 6, Holstein bulls tended to produce more growth hormone than the Belgian Blues, as indicated by higher total peak area (3,185 vs 2,431 ng), peak amplitude (34.1 vs 22.6 ng/ml, P less than .10) and baseline (4.6 vs 3.3 ng/ml, P less than .20). In wk 27, the trends were opposite.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Birth, weaning, feedlot and carcass traits were evaluated on 1,181 calves sired by Charolais and Limousin bulls out of eight crossbred dam groups (Hereford X Angus, Angus X Hereford, Simmental X Angus, Simmental X Hereford, Brown Swiss X Angus, Brown Swiss X Hereford, Jersey X Angus, Jersey X Hereford). Calves were born in the spring over a 4-yr period during which dams ranged from 3 to 8 yr of age. Charolais-cross calves were 2.7 kg heavier (P less than .01) at birth and had a 9.9% higher (P less than .01) incidence of difficult calvings and 4.6% greater (P less than .05) preweaning death loss than did Limousin crosses. Charolais-sired calves out-gained Limousin-sired calves by 31 g/d (P less than .01) from birth to weaning and were 9 kg heavier (P less than .01) at weaning. After weaning, calves were self-fed a finishing diet and slaughtered as each animal attained an estimated carcass grade of low Choice. Charolais-cross calves gained 60 g/d faster (P less than .01) than Limousin crosses, were fed 6.8 fewer d and were 17.3 kg heavier (P less than .01) at slaughter. Feed efficiency was similar for both sire breeds. On a grade-equivalent basis, Charolais crosses produced 7 kg heavier (P less than .01) carcass and had 22 g more carcass weight per day of age (P less than .01). Charolais crosses had slightly less internal and external fat. Dressing percentage was higher for Limousin cross calves (64.6 vs 63.9%, P less than .01). Longissimus muscle area and carcass cutability were similar for crosses of both sire breeds.  相似文献

A 2(3) factorial arrangement of treatments was utilized to determine effects of postweaning zeranol implantation, breed (Angus vs Limousin) and castration (bull vs steer) on growth, behavior and carcass traits. An initial slaughter group was used to account for breed differences in composition and to determine fat and lean growth in the 9-10-11th rib section (NTE). The remaining cattle were fed a finishing diet to a fat end point of .76 cm, as determined by a backfat probe. Control bulls outgained (P less than .01) control steers both to the first kill date and over the entire test and did not require significantly more time to reach the fat end point. The implant did not influence gain in bulls but did increase gain in steers. Angus and Limousins were similar in growth rate for the first 126 d before the first slaughter date. Limousins required more (P less than .01) time to reach the fat end point. Bulls and Limousins produced heavier (P less than .01) carcasses and larger rib eyes (P less than .05; bulls; P less than .01; Limousins). Steers and Angus had higher (P less than .01) marbling scores and lower bone maturity. Implanting decreased (P less than .05) marbling and increased carcass maturity. Small but significant shifts in carcass wholesale cut weight distribution were found between breed and sex condition groups. Bulls and Limousins had greater lean growth in the NTE. Bulls and steers were similar in fat growth, but Angus exceeded Limousin in this trait. Zeranol reduced scrotal circumference (P less than .01) and testicle weight at slaughter (P less than .05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A 2-yr study using crossbred male calves (n = 228) evaluated castrating at birth or at 4 mo of age and use of anabolic growth implants (none, zeranol or estradiol-17 beta). Angus, Hereford and Brahman crossbred calves produced in seven cow-calf units that varied by breed component, stocking rate and calving season were allotted to treatment at birth in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement. Growth implants decreased (P less than .01) testicular weight and expression (P less than .05) of male secondary sex characteristics in suckling bull calves at 4 mo. Implanted calves were shorter (P less than .05) at the hips and had shorter front legs (P less than .01) at both 4 mo and at weaning. Cannon bone circumference at weaning was increased (P less than .05) by growth implants. Age at castration did not affect (P greater than .05) calf performance or body characteristics. Calves given growth implants had higher (P less than .05) rates of gain from birth to 4 mo than did nonimplanted calves (.75 vs .71 kg/d). Implanted calves were heavier (P less than .01) at weaning and had higher (P less than .01) ADG from 4 mo to weaning than did nonimplanted calves. These data indicate no benefit from delaying age at castration, but implanting increased weaning weight an average of 8.2 kg.  相似文献

Feedlot traits, carcass traits and distribution of commercial cuts of crossbred intact male progeny (n = 556) from young and mature Hereford, Red Poll, Hereford X Red Poll, Red Poll X Hereford, Angus X Hereford, Angus X Charolais, Brahman X Hereford and Brahman X Angus dams were evaluated. First-calf heifers were bred to Red Angus bulls; Santa Gertrudis sires were used for each cow's second and third breeding seasons. Calves from these young dams were slaughtered at 13 mo. Calves of mature dams were all sired by Limousin bulls and slaughtered at 12 mo. Dam breed was a major source of variation in most bull traits. Progeny of Brahman-cross dams were inferior (P less than .01) in daily gain, final weight, carcass weight and in edible cuts/day of age compared with progeny from Bos taurus dams. Intact male progeny of Angus X Charolais dams ranked highest in longissimus area, cutability, and edible cuts/day of age. The range of dam breed means in percentage of steak, roast, bone-in cuts (chuck short ribs and back ribs), short plate and thin cuts, and lean trim was just over 1%. Greater variation among dam breeds existed in fat measurements. Analyses in which Hereford-Red Poll diallel data for young dams and mature dams were combined showed positive maternal heterosis for dressing percentage (P less than .05), carcass weight (P less than .05), carcass weight/day of age (P less than .05), estimated carcass fat (P less than .05), fat thickness (P less than .01) and marbling score (P less than .01). Reciprocal effects were inconsequential. Results illustrate the importance of dam breed-type effects in formulating breeding strategies for commercial beef herds.  相似文献

Interactions among grain type (grain sorghum, corn or wheat), roughage level and monensin level were studied in four feedlot trials using pen-fed crossbred yearling cattle. In Trial 1, cattle fed high-moisture corn (HMC) were more efficient (.1537 vs .1406 for gain/feed; P less than .01) than cattle fed dry-rolled grain sorghum (DRGS). As level (0, 3, 6, 9%) of dietary roughage was increased, feed efficiency (gain/feed) decreased (.1566, .1461, .1479, .1382; linear, P less than .01). In Trial 2, a grain type (DRGS; dry-rolled corn, DRC; dry-rolled wheat, DRW) x roughage level interaction was observed for daily gain and feed efficiency. Feed efficiency (gain/feed) was decreased when roughage was added to diets containing DRC (.1608 vs .1750) or DRGS (.1674 vs .1465), but not to the diet containing DRW (.1664 vs .1607). In trial 3, a grain type x roughage level x monensin level interaction (P less than .08) was observed for feed efficiency. The addition of 27.5 mg of monensin per kilogram of the 0% roughage-DRC diet tended to improve feed efficiency (.1633 vs .1531), but the addition of monensin to the 7.5% roughage-DRC diet tended to depress feed efficiency (.1476 vs .1575). The addition of either roughage (.1493 vs .1420) or monensin (.1500 vs .1413) to the DRW diet improved feed efficiency. In Trial 4, cattle fed a combination of 75% DRW and 25% DRC were more efficient (.1618 vs .1591; P less than .06) than cattle fed DRC. As level of roughage (0, 3.75, 7.5%) increased, feed efficiency decreased linearly (.1645, .1599, .1569; P less than .0001). Monensin had no effect on feed efficiency. The value of feeding roughage and monensin was variable both across grain types and within similar grain types.  相似文献
