Objectives— To report a technique for arthrodesis of the distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ) with two 6.5 mm Acutrak Plus (AP) compression screws from a solar approach and outcome in 7 cattle.
Study Design— Case series.
Animals— Cattle (n=7) with DIPJ arthritis.
Methods— Retrieved data from medical records of cattle that had undergone DIPJ arthrodesis using 2 AP screws via a solar approach were signalment, history, clinical signs, preoperative blood work, preoperative radiographs, complications, postoperative radiographs, and postoperative lameness evaluation. Outcomes, assessed by owner interview 6–26 months after surgery, were classified as excellent, good, or poor.
Results— Fusion of the DIPJ was evident by 6 months. All cattle returned to full function with minimal lameness and normal appearance to the distal aspect of the limb. Four thoracic limbs and 3 pelvic limbs were affected; 3 medial and 4 lateral claws. Complications included moderate lameness associated with implants (n=2) that resolved after screw removal.
Clinical Relevance— Use of the AP screw system in cattle is an excellent option for DIPJ arthrodesis with minimal postoperative morbidity and excellent return to function.  相似文献

Gastric myoelectric activity was measured after experimental gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), GDV and tube gastrostomy, or tube gastrostomy in 12 dogs. Gastric myoelectric activity was recorded for 1 hour before (hour 0) and at hours 5, 24, 48, 72, and 96 after surgically induced GDV in six dogs. Three dogs with induced GDV and tube gastrostomy, and three dogs with tube gastrostomy only were also studied at hours 120, 144, and 168. The only significant change in the slow wave appearance or frequency from hours 0 to 48 was bradygastria at hour 5 in all three groups. A relative increase in the mean percentages of dysrhythmia from hours 72 to 168 in the dogs with a tube gastrostomy was caused by increases in tachygastria and arrhythmias. Dogs with GDV and tube gastrostomy had the greatest mean percentages of dysrhythmia, which were significantly more than those in dogs with GDV alone at hours 48, 72 and 96. The mean percentage of spike activity was less than or equal to 31 and varied widely. In general, there was less spike activity when the frequency of dysrhythmias was high. Thus, gastric myoelectric activity was disrupted from hours 48 to 168 after GDV with tube gastrostomy and after tube gastrostomy alone. Surgically induced GDV alone did not produce any significant or sustained dysrhythmias.  相似文献

Partial laryngectomy, arytenoid disarticulation/lateralization, and arytenoidopexy were performed on cadavers from normal dogs. The change in glottic cross-sectional area was calculated from photographs. Partial laryngectomy and unilateral lateralization resulted in a 70 to 80% increase in glottic area. Bilateral lateralization resulted in a significantly greater increase (180%).  相似文献

Deux essais réalisés dans des conditions normales de culture de plein champ ont démontré la potentialité de ces antagonistes comme moyen de lutte contre la moucheture bactérienne, due àP. syringae pv. tomato. Des travaux complémentaires ont montré que ?activité antagoniste des deux germes inhibiteurs n'est pas semblable, ?un des deux agissant essentiellement par la production ?un sidérophore. Objectives— To compare compression pressure (CP) of 6.5 mm Acutrak Plus (AP) and 4.5 mm AO cortical screws (AO) when inserted in simulated lateral condylar fractures of equine 3rd metacarpal (MC3) bones. Study Design— Paired in vitro biomechanical testing. Sample Population— Cadaveric equine MC3 bones (n=12 pair). Methods— Complete lateral condylar osteotomies were created parallel to the midsagittal ridge at 20, 12, and 8 mm axial to the epicondylar fossa on different specimens grouped accordingly. Interfragmentary compression was measured using a pressure sensor placed in the fracture plane before screw placement for fracture fixation. CP was acquired and mean values of CP for each fixation method were compared between the 6.5 mm (AP) and 4.5 mm (AO) for each group using a paired t‐test within each fracture fragment thickness group with statistical significance set at P<.05. Results— AO screw configurations generated significantly greater compressive pressure compared with AP configurations. The ratio of mean CP for AP screws to AO screws at 20, 12, and 8 mm, were 21.6%, 26.2%, and 34.2%, respectively. Conclusion— Mean CP for AP screw fixations are weaker than those for AO screw fixations, most notably with the 20 mm fragments. The 12 and 8 mm groups have comparatively better compression characteristics than the 20 mm group; however, they are still significantly weaker than AO fixations. Clinical Relevance— Given that the primary goals of surgical repair are to achieve rigid fixation, primary bone healing, and good articular alignment, based on these results, it is recommended that caution should be used when choosing the AP screw for repair of lateral condylar fractures, especially complete fractures. Because interfragmentary compression plays a factor in the overall stability of a repair, it is recommended for use only in patients with thin lateral condyle fracture fragments, as the compression tends to decrease with an increase in thickness.  相似文献

This paper considers the behavior of actors in real estate markets in the face of environmental uncertainty. Environmental legislation has increased in scale and scope with obvious implications for property markets. Developers, investors, occupiers, and lenders may all be affected by changing environmental standards. Any factor that creates valuation uncertainty will have major impacts. Blighted sites and properties will be shunned, while existing real estate portfolios will be adversely affected. A survey of UK property practitioners on their attitudes to environmental hazard reveals that firms seem pessimistic as to their ability to quantify and model the economic and investment implications of environmental risk. There are concerns here for the wider economy and for the business community through supply-side constraints and suboptimal location. There are implications, too, for local and regional regeneration strategies as whole areas may be blighted by potential contamination. There may be mispricing and arbitrage opportunities in relation to such assets that can be exploited through first mover advantage by firms willing and able to develop effective risk-sensitive appraisal models.  相似文献

A frontal mucocoele in a 1-year-old dog resulted from trauma which caused obstruction to the naso-frontal opening. Patency of the naso-frontal opening was re-established surgically. The dog was in good health 2 years post-operatively.
Résumé. A la suite d'un traumatisme, un mucocèle frontal causait une obstruction de l'orifice nasofrontal chez un chien âgé d'un an. Par une intervention chirurgicale on a pu dégager l'orifice naso-frontal. Deux ans après l'opération le chien était encore en bonne santé.
Zusammenfassung. Eine frontale Mucocele bei einem 1 Jahr alten Hund war die Folge eines Traumas, welches Obstruktion der nasofrontalen Öffnung verursachte. Die Wiederherstellung der Durchgängigkeit der nasofrontalen Öffnung wurde chirurgisch vorgenommen. Der Hund befand sich 2 Jahre nach der Operation in gutem Gesundheitszustand.  相似文献

The term ‘intensive care’ is becoming increasingly popular in veterinary medicine to describe those techniques employed in caring for the critically ill animal. Application of the techniques required for intensive care is not difficult and can be employed in any veterinary practice. The purpose of intensive care is the uncomplicated conversion of a dramatic disease process into an uneventful one, not the performance of life-saving heroics. Critically ill patients share several common features, particularly the need for diligent monitoring and nursing. Regardless of the primary disease, the function of many organs is frequently impaired in these patients and they require total body care. Critically ill animals may have fluid, acid-base and electrolyte imbalances, increased caloric requirements and an increased susceptibility to infection. This paper describes the equipping and staffing of an intensive care unit and the various techniques for monitoring critically ill animals. It also reviews aspects of fluid and electrolyte disturbances and therapy, and the unusual respiratory problems and nutritional requirements of these patients.  相似文献

Objective— To evaluate the efficacy of a surgically placed, static hydraulic urethral sphincter (SHUS) for treatment of urethral sphincter mechanism incompetency (USMI).
Study Design— Prospective study.
Animals— Spayed female dogs (n=4) with acquired USMI.
Methods— Urinary incontinence was assessed using a subjective continence score before and after implantation of an SHUS on the proximal urethra via ventral median celiotomy. Dogs were assessed for urinary continence, urinary tract infections, and implant-associated complications for 30 months. Residual incontinence was treated with percutaneous inflation of the SHUS with sterile saline solution through a biocompatible subcutaneous administration port.
Results— At last follow-up (26–30 months after surgery), continence scores improved from a median preoperative score of 3/10 to a median postoperative score of 10. One dog developed wound drainage over the subcutaneously placed administration port but remained continent after port removal. Three occluders were percutaneously filled with additional saline (median, 0.18 mL; mean, 0.16 mL) to improve continence after surgery.
Conclusions— Application and adjustment of an SHUS provided sustained improvements in continence score in all dogs.
Clinical Relevance— In this pilot study, 3 of 4 dogs with hydraulic urethral sphincter implantation had successful percutaneous adjustment and maintained improved continence scores for 2 years after surgery. Continence was maintained in the 4th dog even after administration port removal. Based on this pilot study, the SHUS warrants further clinical evaluation for treatment of dogs with USMI unresponsive to medical management.  相似文献
