The genotypic classification of 84 U.K. isolates of bovid herpesvirus 1 was determined by the restriction endonuclease technique. Preliminary studies with six enzymes (EcoRI, HindIII, HpaI, BamHI, PstI and BstEII) showed that the principal genotypic variants, including the live vaccine strains used in the U.K., could be identified from the digestion patterns with just two endonucleases: HindIII and HpaI. Isolates from the 1960s were all categorised as genotype 2b. From 1977 onwards, genotype 1 has predominated in mainland Britain, with occasional type 2b isolates. Type 2b viruses were isolated from both respiratory and genital disease cases. There was no evidence of genotypes 2a or 3 in the U.K.  相似文献

Megakaryocytic infection and thrombocytopenia in African swine fever   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Pigs infected with an African swine fever field isolate of modified virulence became acutely thrombocytopenic four to five days after the onset of fever and viremia. By eight days after inoculation, all pigs were thrombocytopenic. Immunofluorescence microscopy demonstrated that 2 to 10% of the megakaryocytes were infected. By 13 days after inoculation, platelet counts returned to within normal limits, and there was megakaryocytic hyperplasia despite a continued viremia. Secondary complications delayed the return of normal circulating platelet levels in some pigs. The clinical findings of African swine fever are discussed in light of the gross and histologic lesions.  相似文献

Summary Four varieties of lupins were sown at three planting dates and the level of Phomopsis leptostromiformis measured on the mature stems. When averaged over planting dates the varieties did not differ in resistance to this disease, however there were highly significant interactions between varieties and planting dates for level of disease. The implications of this result for resistance breeding to Phomopsis leptostromiformis are discussed.  相似文献

Fifty sloping fields of barley with different short-term cropping histories across Prince Edward Island were examined for variations in root-zone depth and the severity of soil parasitic nematodes as part of a wider study of relationships between cropping sequence, topographic position, soil physical conditions and crop performance. Root lesion nematode (Pratylenchus penetrans) density in the roots was significantly greater (13%) at foot slopes than at top slopes, and stunt nematode (Tylenchorhynchus spp.) was significantly greater (8%) at top slopes where the soil was drier. The density of stunt nematodes and root lesion nematodes in the soil was significantly greater (>15%) under miscellaneous cereals-barley sequences than under potato-barley or hay-barley, attributable to level of carryover. Root lesion nematode density in the roots was significantly greater (12%) under hay-barley than either of the other two sequences. This nematode also showed a strong tendency to increase in number with increasing root-zone depth, and may be explained on the basis that increased root-zone depth provides increased host root mass (substrate). Stunt nematodes, on the other hand, increased with decreasing root-zone depth and may be explained by the known propensity of these organisms for drier, shallower soil conditions.  相似文献

Three triterpenoids, betulinic acid, oleanolic acid, and ursolic acid, were isolated as their methyl esters (treatment with diazomethane) from diethyl ether extracts of almond hulls (Nonpareil variety) using flash chromatography and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. The triterpenoids, which comprised approximately 1% of the hulls, were characterized using chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. These studies demonstrate that almond hulls are a rich source of these triterpenoids, which have reported anti-inflammatory, anti-HIV, and anti-cancer activities.  相似文献

The influence of various inorganic and organic fertilizers was assessed in three long-term “classical” experiments and two short-term field experiments, one on grass and one on wheat. The long-term experiments included Broadbalk which had grown continuous wheat since 1843, Barnfield, continuous root crops since 1843 and Park Grass, continuous grass since 1836. Annual fertilizer treatments were farmyard manure (48 and 96 kg N ha?1), various forms of inorganic nitrogen (48, 96, 144 and 192 kg N ha?1), liquid and solid sewage sludge and sewage cake in a wide range of doses.In the three arable experiments, all species of earthworms were more numerous in plots treated with organic fertilizers than in untreated plots.There was a strong positive correlation (r = 0.9825) between amounts of inorganic N applied and populations of earthworms. Plots receiving both inorganic and organic N had the largest populations of earthworms.The effects of both inorganic and organic N were much less on earthworm populations in grassland than on those in arable crops, even in the long-term experiments, and there was some evidence of adverse effects when an excessive amount of liquid sludge was applied in a single dose.Effects of organic fertilizers were greater on populations of Lumbricus terrestris than on those of Allolobophora longa, A. caliginosa or A. chorotica.  相似文献

Surface runoff is the major way of P transport from agricultural land to surface waters. To assess the potential of P loss in runoff in relation to soil P status, the chemical nature and distribution of soil P in different size classes of water-stable aggregates were quantified for two distinctive soil types. For both soils unfertilized areas under pasture and well-fertilized arable soils were sampled. The content of total P, organic P and microbial biomass P (Pmic) decreased in the aggregate size order <0.1, 1–2, and 0.1–1.0 mm respectively. In contrast available P (extracted by Bray I reagent) was lowest in the <0.1 mm aggregate size. Cultivation decreased the percentage of 1–2 mm aggregates but increased that of the <0.1 mm aggregates. Fertilization increased markedly both total P and organic P in the <0.1 mm fraction of arable soils compared to the corresponding samples from unfertilized grassland soils. During aggregate separation, most of P loss was in the form of particulate P and less than 1% in solution. More organic P and Pmic were lost from the grassland soils than from the arable soils.  相似文献
