We have previously shown that 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB-126) vertically transferred from dams potentially exerts a direct effect on the ovaries of offspring and adversely affects female puberty. To investigate its toxicological targets in ovarian tissues, mRNAs encoding representative peptides that regulate follicular development in granulosa cells, theca cells, and oocytes were quantified using ovaries collected on postnatal days (PND) 5, 15, and 24 from the offspring of dams administered oral doses of 0, 1 or 3 microg/kg PCB-126 starting 2 weeks prior to mating and continuing until 20 days after delivery. Quantification using the real-time RT-PCR method revealed that PCB-126 lowered the amounts of mRNAs that encoded the inhibin alpha- and inhibin/activin beta A-subunits from PND 15 onwards; the amounts of mRNAs for inhibin/activin beta B-subunit, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) receptor, and aromatase on PND 15; and the amounts of luteinizing hormone receptor mRNA on PND 24 compared with those of the age-matched controls. In contrast, no differences were noted for mRNAs encoding c-kit, growth differentiation factor-9, bone morphogenetic protein-15, or kit ligand for any of the age groups examined. The serum FSH level on PND 24 was higher than that in the control. Since the earliest effects on the mRNAs in the rat ovaries were observed in those expressed in the granulosa cells of the growing follicles after the antral follicles had developed, molecules in granulosa cells but not in oocytes during the early stages of the antral follicles might be the primary targets of vertically transferred PCB-126. 相似文献

The k-nearest neighbors (kNN) method is widely employed in national forest inventory applications using remote sensing data. The
objective of this study was to evaluate the kNN method for stand volume estimation by combining LANDSAT/ETM+ data with 622
field sample plots from the Japanese National Forest Inventory (NFI) in Kyushu, Japan. The root mean square error (RMSE) and
relative RMSE of the volume estimates rapidly decreased as the number of nearest neighbors (k) increased up to five, and then it slightly declined. They were consistently smaller for the Euclidean distance than for
the Mahalanobis distance. The estimation errors (RMSE and relative RMSE) were 169.2 m3/ha and 66.2%, respectively (k = 10). The relative RMSE was similar to the previous studies. The estimated values were more accurate towards the mean value
of the total volume, with an overestimation of the low volumes and an underestimation of the high volumes. We found a significant
linear relationship between the observed stand volumes and estimated errors, which suggests that systematic errors may be

The reaction of (+)-catechin with formaldehyde vapor was investigated as a model reaction of formaldehyde adsorption of (+)-catechin.
It was found by H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass
spectrometry, and gel permeation chromatography of the product that the vapor reaction of (+)-catechin with formaldehyde without
a solvent or a catalyst proceeds via methylolation, condensation, and polymerization. This is the same as the reaction in
a solvent in the presence of an acid or a base. The formation of polyoxymethylenes such as paraformaldehyde was not confirmed. 相似文献

The genome of the japonica subspecies of rice, an important cereal and model monocot, was sequenced and assembled by whole-genome shotgun sequencing. The assembled sequence covers 93% of the 420-megabase genome. Gene predictions on the assembled sequence suggest that the genome contains 32,000 to 50,000 genes. Homologs of 98% of the known maize, wheat, and barley proteins are found in rice. Synteny and gene homology between rice and the other cereal genomes are extensive, whereas synteny with Arabidopsis is limited. Assignment of candidate rice orthologs to Arabidopsis genes is possible in many cases. The rice genome sequence provides a foundation for the improvement of cereals, our most important crops. 相似文献

Molecular-weight distribution and characterization of tea tannin were investigated by high-performance liquid chromatography and the equivalent preparative exclusion gel chromatography using Sephadex G-25. The characteristics of the fractions were studied regarding the amounts of terminal catechin, sugar, and gallic acid, the color reaction of the Folin-Chiocalteu reagent, the UV absorbance, and the inhibition activity for the trypsin-caseinolytic activity per weight. Furthermore, we investigated the intercepting activities of the inhibition by the amino acids, peptides, their analogues, poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs), and histatin 5 using the inhibition of trypsin-caseinolytic activity by tea. Arg, Lys, and their peptides had strong intercepting activities for the inhibition, but only a weak activity was detected in the Pro peptides or gelatin-like peptides of (Pro-Pro-Gly)(n) (n = 5 or 10). The guanidyl group of Arg and the amino methylene group of Lys were important for the intercepting activity, but the activity was weakly dependent upon the peptide bond formation. The intercepting activity of the peptides or PEG exponentially increased with the number of polymerizations. Histatin 5 did not have a remarkably strong intercepting activity considering the peptide length. The activity of the synthetic histatin 5 in which all of the Lys and Arg were substituted by Ala was at the same level as histatin 5. 相似文献

Xyloglucan is thought to be a key hemicellulose cross-linking adjacent cellulose microfibrils in plant cell walls. The growth traits of transgenic poplars (Populus alba) with decreased xyloglucan from overexpression of Aspergillus aculeatus xyloglucanase were characterized during a 4-year field trial. The field-trial site consisted of two blocks, a fertile soil block and a non-fertile soil block, determined by soil analysis. In the fertile block, the growth of aboveground biomass of the transgenic poplars was reduced to 24?C44?% compared to that of wild-type poplars, in contrast to the growth seen in chamber and greenhouse conditions. In the non-fertile block, the aboveground biomass of transgenic poplars was also smaller than that of the wild-type poplars. Because poplars reproduce asexually by root suckers, we also compared the formation of root suckers from transgenic and wild-type poplars. Root suckers formed less frequently from transgenic poplars than from wild-type poplars. The growth rates of root suckers from transgenic poplars were also slower than those from wild-type poplars. The results showed that constitutive degradation of xyloglucan impairs poplar growth and vegetative reproduction ability. 相似文献
