The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the amount and type of lipids, starch composition and structure, and storage proteins on popcorn expansion and to evaluate whether popcorns could be discriminated from other types of corn based on the protein elution parameters. Seven commercial Argentinean popcorn samples were used in the study and significant differences were observed in the popping volume of these popcorns. A significant negative correlation was observed between oleic acid and popping volume and a positive correlation was observed between linoleic acid and popping volume. Popcorn starch properties were significantly different from normal corn but no particular measured attribute of starch correlated with popping volume. α‐Zein proteins and glutelins significantly correlated with popcorn expansion volume with R2 = 0.963 and 0.744, respectively. The elution patterns of corn proteins could also be used to discriminate between different types of corn including popcorn, dent, and flint corns.  相似文献

Pinus canariensis Chr, Sm. ex DC. samples showing severe damage produced by atmospheric pollution were taken from three locations under the possible influence of the emissions of a fuel-fired power plant in Tenerife. Other samples were taken at four control locations in Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro (Canary Islands, Spain), distant from local sources of pollution. Injury symptoms were evaluated by visual examination of the needles, and the data were correlated with the releasing rates of inorganic anions and cations from the needles when sonicated under water. For this purpose, the samples were sonicated 4-times during 10 min successive periods while renewing the water layer in between, and the leachates were analyzed by capillary zone electrophoresis. Measurable amounts of K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl- and SO4 2- were detected. Potassium ions were released in approximately constant or increasing amounts along the sonication series in the control samples, whereas the samples damaged by pollution released larger amounts during the first sonication treatment, and much lower amounts afterwards. Indices which estimated the initial releasing rate of the cations were examinated as possible indicators to evaluate atmospheric pollution. Only the K+ index showed a large positive correlation with the brown-reddish decoloration and tip necrosis of the needles. The correlation of the K+ index with flecking and steepling of the needles was much lower. After principal component analysis of the autoscaled data, the sampling sites and the variables were projected on the plane of the first and second eigenvectors. Using the visual examination parameters as variables, both without and with addition of the cation indices, the sampling sites appeared in the order of increasing damage along the first eigenvector. Evidence of the effects of long-range transported pollutants was obtained, and no relationship was demonstrated between damage of pine needles and emissions from the power plant.  相似文献

Soya bean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) monoculture can lead to a decrease in labile fractions of soil organic carbon (SOC). This study sought to evaluate the effects of cover crops (CC), application of fertilizer, and crop rotation on SOC, particulate organic carbon (POC), and soil carbon input in soya bean-based crop sequences under a no-till cropping system in the Argentinean Humid Pampas. Five crop sequences at two sites differing in initial SOC were evaluated: continuous soya bean (Sb), continuous soya bean fertilized with phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S) (Sbf), grass CC / PS-fertilized soya bean (CC/Sbf), nitrogen (N)-fertilized CC / PS-fertilized soya bean (CCf/Sbf) and NPS-fertilized crop rotation with high intensification sequence index (ISI) (Rot). At 0–5 cm, SOC and POC were higher (p < .05) in the sequences with higher residue-C supply (CC/Sbf; CCf/Sbf and Rot) at both sites. Changes in SOC at 0–20 cm simulated by AMG model closely tracked measured results at 0–20 cm. Findings from this study suggest that the inclusion of CC or crop rotation with high ISI improved C balance in soils under crop sequences with soya bean predominance.  相似文献

Hemostasis profiles from 101 cats presented for medical or surgical evaluation to The Ohio State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital from 1986 through 1991 were reviewed retrospectively; 69% were abnormal. Commonly identified abnormalities included a mixed hemostatic defect compatible with disseminated intravascular coagulation, thrombocytopenia, isolated prolongation of the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and prolongation of both the APTT and one-stage prothrombin time. The most common disorders associated with abnormal hemostasis profiles in this study were liver disease, neoplasia, and feline infectious peritonitis.  相似文献

Results from transabdominal fine-needle aspiration of the spleen in 28 dogs and 5 cats are reported. Splenomegaly was present in 79% of these patients, and splenic masses were present in 15%. Extramedullary hematopoiesis, the most common cytologic diagnosis, was found in 24% of the patients and was associated with a variety of diseases including immune hemolytic anemia, hemangiosarcoma, and bone marrow hypoplasia. Hematopoietic neoplasms including lymphosarcoma, plasmacytoma, myelogenous leukemia, and systemic mastocytosis were diagnosed in 24% of the patients. Other diagnoses included malignant neoplasia of undetermined cell type and lymphoreticular hyperplasia. Splenic aspirates were considered normal in 18% of the animals. Two (6%) of the aspirates contained liver tissue rather than spleen. Histologic evaluation of splenic tissue was performed in 42.5% of the patients. All cytologic diagnoses correlated well with their final histologic diagnoses. Complications from the aspiration procedure were not observed, even in thrombocytopenic patients.  相似文献

The combination of the organophosphate (OP) chlorpyrifos (CPF) and the pyrethroid cypermethrin (CPM) is commonly marketed as pour‐on formulations for the control of sheep lice, ked, and blowflies. CPF irreversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterases (AChE), while pyrethroids are not AChE inhibitors. However, combinations of pyrethroids with OPs showed a highly synergistic effect on AChE inhibition. Thus, the aim of the current work was to evaluate in vitro and in vivo the inhibitory potency of both pesticides, alone and in combination with AChE and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activities in sheep blood. In vitro, IC50 values were similar after CPF or CPF plus CPM incubations. The pour‐on coadministration of recommended doses of CPF and CPM did not cause a significant inhibition of AChE and BChE in sheep blood. Only slight percentages of inhibition of their catalytic activities were observed when both drugs were given at 4‐fold higher dose rates. The lower systemic availability of topical administration of OPs in sheep may help to explain the lower degree of inhibition of blood AChE and BChE in vivo. The results emerged from this research are a further contribution to the knowledge of the risks of implementing higher dosage regimens of OPs‐containing antiparasitic formulations.  相似文献

Occipital condylar fractures (OCFs) causing delayed onset lower cranial nerve paralysis (LCNPs) are rare. We present a 7‐year‐old Friesian horse with delayed onset dysphagia caused by vagus nerve (CNX) paralysis and suspicion of glossopharyngeal nerve (CNIX) paralysis developed several days after a minor head injury. Endoscopic examination revealed right laryngeal hemiplegia and intermittent dorsal displacement of the soft palate. An area of submucosal hemorrhage and bulging was appreciated over the dorsal aspect of the medial compartment of the right guttural pouch. Radiological examination of the proximal cervical region showed rotation of the atlas and the presence of a large bone fragment dorsal to the guttural pouches. Occipital condyle fracture with delayed onset cranial nerve paralysis was diagnosed. Delayed onset cranial nerve paralysis causing dysphagia might be a distinguishable sign of OCF in horses. Delayed onset dysphagia after head injury should prompt equine clinicians to evaluate the condition of the atlanto‐occipital articulation and skull base.  相似文献

To identify ways to improve water quality and shrimp production in closed systems, two parallel experiments (one in tanks and one in ponds) were conducted using Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, cultures. In both experiments, the effects of inorganic (Nutrilake®) and organic (molasses) fertilization on physicochemical parameters, bacterial concentrations, and shrimp performance under zero water exchange were evaluated. Fertilization with both molasses and Nutrilake enhanced the feed conversion rate, as well as shrimp survival and production. In tanks, the shrimp survival and production rates were highest in the molasses treatment, but this effect was not observed in ponds. In ponds, fertilization with Nutrilake increased nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations more than did the controls and molasses treatments toward the end of the experiment. In tanks, fertilization with molasses reduced ammonia concentrations toward the end of the experiment, but the same effect was not observed in ponds. In ponds, fertilization reduced the proportion of Vibrio spp. bacteria, which most likely reduced the incidence of disease from these potentially pathogenic organisms. In both culture systems, fertilization increased the proportion of Bacillus spp., which most likely enhanced food availability.  相似文献

Water use, hydraulic properties and xylem vulnerability to cavitation were studied in the coffee (Coffea arabica L.) cultivars San Ramon, Yellow Caturra and Typica growing in the field under similar environmental conditions. The cultivars differed in growth habit, crown morphology and total leaf surface area. Sap flow, stomatal conductance (g(s)), crown conductance (g(c)), apparent hydraulic conductance of the soil-leaf pathway (G(t)), leaf water potential (Psi(L)) and xylem vulnerability to loss of hydraulic conductivity were assessed under well-watered conditions and during a 21-day period when irrigation was withheld. Sap flow, g(c), and G(t) were greatest in Typica both with and without irrigation, lowest in San Ramon, which was relatively unresponsive to the withholding of irrigation, and intermediate in Yellow Caturra. The cultivars had similar g(s) when well watered, but withholding water decreased g(s) more in Typica and Yellow Caturra than in San Ramon. Typica had substantially lower Psi(L) near the end of the unirrigated period than the other cultivars (-2.5 versus -1.8 MPa), consistent with the relatively high sap flow in this cultivar. Xylem vulnerability curves indicated that Typica was less susceptible to loss of hydraulic conductivity than the other cultivars, consistent with the more negative Psi(L) values of Typica in the field during the period of low soil water availability. During soil drying, water use declined linearly with relative conductivity loss predicted from vulnerability curves. However, cultivar-specific relationships between water use and predicted conductivity loss were not observed because of pronounced hysteresis during recovery of water use following soil water recharge. All cultivars shared the same functional relationship between integrated daily sap flow and G(t), but they had different operating ranges. The three cultivars also shared common functional relationships between hydraulic architecture and water use despite consistent differences in water use under irrigated and dry soil conditions. We conclude that hydraulic architectural traits, rate of water use per plant and crown architecture are important determinants of short- and long-term variations in the water balance of Coffea arabica.  相似文献
