Verminous encephalomyelitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis larvae was diagnosed in 2 foals at necropsy. The principal clinical feature was tetraparesis, although history and neurological examination revealed progressive and multifocal neurological disease. At presentation, a tentative diagnosis of parasitic larval migration involving the central nervous system (CNS), presumably due to Strongylus vulgaris, was proposed. Dissection of the spinal cord in one case resulted in recovery of intact larvae of both sexes of A. cantonensis. In both foals, histopathology of the brain and spinal cord revealed nematode sections which were consistent with A. cantonensis larvae. 相似文献

Studies on the accumulation of cobalt by fish eggs are described. γ-Energy measurement of 57Co and atomic absorption with the flameless technique were used for the detection of the cobalt. The cobalt level of the eggs was found to be directly proportional to the cobalt content of the aquatic medium, and its uptake decreased with increasing calcium ion concentration in the water. The accumulation of bivalent cobalt ions was found to take place on the surface of the eggs, where they are reversibly bound by the binding force of chorion-mucopolysaccharide. The need for relatively high numbers of spermatozoa for artificial insemination limits our application of recently available technologies such as sex‐sorted semen. The fertility of two different methods of low dose insemination using fresh, frozen and sex‐sorted semen are compared in this overview. Satisfactory conception rates are described using very low doses of spermatozoa inseminated by either hysteroscopic or deep uterine insemination methods, proving the stallion is fully fertile. The hysteroscopic method appears to give higher conception rates when inseminating fewer than 5 × 106 spermatozoa and is therefore, the preferred method of insemination for sex‐sorted spermatozoa. However, hysteroscopic deposition of low numbers of spermatozoa from infertile stallions does not appear to improve their fertility. 相似文献

A new approach for the determination of the attenuation limit of beer samples using the specific fingerprint region of middle-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy in combination with multiple regression by partial least-squares (PLS) was developed using an attenuated total reflectance (ATR) module. A specific spectral region between 1200 and 800 cm(-1) was identified as highly informative for the quantification of the limit of attenuation. The absorptions in this region are induced by vibrational bands of ethanol (1080, 1040, and 880 cm(-1)) and dissolved extract, in majority maltotriose (1160-1140 and 1040-980 cm(-1)). The multivariate calibration results in a root mean squared error of calibration (RMSEC) of 0.40% and a validation procedure with independent samples results in a root mean squared error of validation (RMSEV) of 0.50%. A repeatability test, concerning the precision of the developed MIR method as well as the reference method, was analyzed using Student's t test. Deciphering the effects of disperser assemblages and seed mass on patterns of seed dispersal in a rodent community 下载免费PDF全文
The sizes of both seed dispersers and seeds are traits that are likely to interact to influence seed fate in many synzoochoric plant species. Here, we examined whether members of a granivorous rodent community consisting of species of different body size vary in their effectiveness as seed dispersers, and how this relationship may be altered by seed size. We marked northern red oak (Quercus rubra) acorns with plastic tags and placed them in size‐selective rodent exclosures. The exclosures allowed differential access of rodent groups based on different body size: (i) small (e.g. Peromyscus spp.); (ii) small and medium (e.g. Tamias striatus); and (iii) small, medium and large (e.g. Sciurus carolinensis) species of rodents. Acorn removal did not differ among exclosure types, but more seeds were missing when removed by small rodents, probably because of larderhoarding. The treatments did not influence the relative frequency of acorn consumption. However, small rodents cached considerably fewer and partially ate more acorns than the other 2 groups. The mean dispersal distance was the longest for cages with medium openings, intermediate for cages with large openings and the shortest for cages with small openings. Acorn mass positively affected the probability of caching and this relationship was unaffected by exclosure type. In conclusion, granivorous rodents of different body sizes strongly differed in their interactions with acorns, with small rodents acting primarily as acorn predators and medium and large species contributing significantly more to dispersal of red oaks. 相似文献

The small eccentricity of Neptune may be a direct consequence of apsidal wave interaction with the trans-Neptune population of debris called the Kuiper belt. The Kuiper belt is subject to resonant perturbations from Neptune, so that the transport of angular momentum by density waves can result in orbital evolution of Neptune as well as changes in the structure of the Kuiper belt. In particular, for a belt eroded out to the vicinity of Neptune's 2:1 resonance at about 48 astronomical units, Neptune's eccentricity can damp to its current value over the age of the solar system if the belt contains slightly more than an earth mass of material out to about 75 astronomical units. 相似文献

A field-based case-control study was conducted to assess the strength of association of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and some major swine viruses with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). Cases were defined as individual pigs with a clinical history of progressive weight loss and histopathological lesions characteristic of PMWS. Controls were pigs without clinical signs and histopathological lesions typical of PMWS. A total of 31 cases and 56 controls was identified from diagnostic submissions. Serum and various tissues were collected from all animals and assayed for PCV, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine parvovirus, porcine enterovirus types 1-3, swine influenza virus, porcine respiratory coronavirus, transmissible gastroenteritis virus, porcine endogenous retrovirus, porcine lymphotropic herpesvirus type 1, and bovine viral diarrhea virus. The proportion of case and control pigs positive for each virus was determined and statistically compared for determining the strength of the association that each virus had with PMWS individually or in combinations. Porcine circovirus type 2 had the strongest association (OR = 9.3, P = 0.006) with PMWS among the viruses tested for. Risk for PWMS was much higher (OR = 31.2, P = 0.0009) if the animal was concurrently infected with PCV2 and PRRSV, suggesting that development of PMWS may be enhanced by cofactor(s). Because PCV2 was also found in 62.5% of the controls, PCV2 from 5 cases and 4 controls were selected and genetically compared. Two experiments using commercial broiler‐type breeders and one experiment using commercial egg production‐type breeders were conducted to determine the effect of male to female ratios on fertility and hatchability. Breeding pens were made up with 36 females and 4, 3, 2 or 1 male(s) per pen giving ratios of one male to 9, 12, 18 and 36 females. Five replicate pens were used per treatment.
Within the ratios and genetic strains used, maximum fertility was obtained with male to female ratios of 1 to 12 with broiler‐type breeders and 1 to 18 with egg production‐type breeders. It is concluded that using fewer females per male than in these ratios would be unwarranted and in some cases more females per male would be feasible.
Hatchability of fertile eggs was not affected by male to female ratios. 相似文献
