A study was conducted in Phoenix, AZ on stressed and unstressed field plots of Anza wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) on an Avondale loam soil (a fine, loamy, mixed calcareous hyperthermic Anthropic Torrifluvent) to determine effects of panicles on the apparent canopy temperature and their consequent impact on the estimation of crop stress. The panicles were removed from a 1.5 × 4-m sample of each plot by extracting the peduncle from the upper sheath. For each treatment canopy radiative temperature measurements were made from vertical and oblique angles (30° from the horizontal), using an 8° field-of-view (FOV) infrared thermometer, at half-hour intervals from sunrise to sunset on 20, 22, and 30 April. Complementary measurements included leaf water potential and leaf diffusive resistance.Apparent canopy temperatures obtained from the oblique view of the canopy with panicles and under well-watered conditions were 2°C warmer than those of the unstressed canopy without panicles. In the stressed plot the canopy with panicles was 1°C cooler than that without panicles, but this effect was only noticed around 1200 MST. The temperature difference between viewing angles was apparently caused by different percentages of panicle area viewed by the radiometer. In the vertical view panicles contributed to 3% of the total viewed area while at the 30° oblique view panicles comprised 40% of the area. Since energy balance calculations of a non-transpiring cylinder with dimensions similar to a typical wheat panicle showed its temperature would remain very close to that of the surrounding air, canopy temperatures were adjusted for the proportion of panicles viewed assuming they were in equilibrium with air temperature. Results showed the corrected canopy temperatures of the canopy with panicles were the same as those measured in the canopy without panicles. Such a correction is necessary to avoid an overestimate of the stress level and an underestimate of differences between treatments. Crops with non-transpiring and/or well-ventilated morphological structures above the foliage will require this correction if radiative canopy temperatures are to be used in irrigation management programs or stress detection studies.  相似文献

Ferulate and diferulates mediate cell wall cross-linking in grasses, but little is known about their cross-coupling reactions with monolignols and their role in lignin formation in primary cell walls. Feruloylated primary walls of maize were artificially lignified and then saponified to release ferulate and diferulates and their cross-products with coniferyl alcohol for analysis by GC-FID, GC-MS, and NMR spectroscopy. Ferulate and 5-5-coupled diferulate had a greater propensity than 8-coupled diferulates to copolymerize with coniferyl alcohol, forming mostly 4-O-beta' and 8-beta' and some 8-O-4' and 8-5' cross-coupled structures. Some 8-beta' structures de-esterified from xylans, but these cross-links were subsequently replaced as 8-coupled diferulates formed stable cross-coupled structures with lignin. Based on the incorporation kinetics of ferulate and diferulates and the predicted growth of lignin, cross-products formed at the onset of lignification acted as nucleation sites for lignin polymerization.  相似文献

Neonatal lamb mortality is a major factor affecting profitability in the sheep industry, and lamb thermogenesis is a key element in neonatal lamb survival. Increased lamb vigor has been reported when ewes were supplemented during late gestation with algae-derived docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); however, the effects of DHA on lamb thermogenesis and immunocompetence have not been investigated. Eighty twin-bearing Targhee ewes (ages 2 to 5 yr; 68.5 ± 3 kg) were assigned randomly to 1 of 2 supplement treatments to determine the effects of feeding DHA to ewes during late gestation and early lactation on lamb thermogenesis, serum metabolites and hormones, and lamb growth. Supplement treatments were 12 g·ewe(-1)·d(-1) of algae-derived DHA (DHA Gold Advanced Bionutrition Corp., Columbia, MD; algae-derived DHA); and no algae-derived DHA (control). Supplements were individually fed daily during the last 30 d (±7 d) of gestation and pen fed (6 pens/treatment with 6 or 7 ewes/pen) during the first 38 d (±7 d) of lactation. One hour after lambing and before nursing, twin-born lambs were weighed, blood sampled via jugular puncture, and placed in a dry cold chamber for 30 min (0°C), and rectal temperatures were recorded every minute for 30 min. Lambs were removed from the cold chamber, blood sampled, warmed for 15 min, and returned to their dam. Ewes were blood sampled, and colostrum samples were collected 1 h postpartum. Ewe and lamb sera were assayed for glucose, NEFA, cortisol, and leptin. Lamb rectal temperature, glucose, NEFA, cortisol, leptin, and birth weights did not differ between treatments. The BW at 38 d was greater (P = 0.03) for lambs born to control ewes than for lambs born to algae-derived DHA-supplemented ewes; however, the colostrum of algae-derived DHA-supplemented ewes had a greater specific gravity (P = 0.05) than for control ewes. Overall, despite a potentially positive effect on ewe colostral IgG concentrations, supplementation of algae-derived DHA during late gestation and early lactation had a negative effect on lamb BW and did not affect indices of lamb thermogenesis.  相似文献

The efficacy of moxidectin was determined against ivermectin-susceptible and resistant strains of Haemonchus contortus. At the onset of the trial, 40 lambs were each infected with 5000 third stage larvae of one of two strains of Haemonchus contortus. The lambs were randomly sorted into eight treatment groups 28 days post-infection and were treated as follows: Group 1, susceptible strain with no treatment; Group 2, resistant strain with no treatment; Group 3, susceptible strain treated with 0.2 mg moxidectin kg-1 body weight; Group 4, resistant strain treated with 0.2 mg moxidectin kg-1; Group 5, resistant strain treated with 0.4 mg moxidectin kg-1; Group 6, susceptible strain treated with 0.2 mg ivermectin kg-1; Group 7, resistant strain treated with 0.4 mg ivermectin kg-1; Group 8, resistant strain treated with 0.8 mg ivermectin kg-1. The lambs were killed 1 week post-treatment. Comparisons were made among groups based on the number of eggs per gram of feces on the day of treatment and the numbers of worms recovered from each lamb. Both moxidectin and ivermectin were effective in removing susceptible Haemonchus with efficacies of 100% and 99.7%, respectively. The efficacy of moxidectin against the resistant strain was 99.9% and 100% at 0.2 mg kg-1 and 0.4 mg kg-1, respectively, whereas there were only 38.8% and 53.1% efficacies in the lambs treated with 0.4 mg ivermectin kg-1 and 0.8 mg kg-1 body weight, respectively.  相似文献

Medical records of 15 adult cows with a final diagnosis of pyelonephritis were evaluated retrospectively. Only 3 cows had obvious clinical signs that indicated urinary tract disease. Physical examination, including rectal and vaginal examinations, and urine chemical reagent strip screening detected abnormalities in all 15 cows and allowed subsequent confirmation by culture results of urine samples obtained using a catheter. Bacteriologic cultures of urine revealed Corynebacterium renale infection in 6 cows and Escherichia coli infection in 9 cows. Long-term treatment with antimicrobial drugs resulted in recovery in 9 of 11 treated cows. Of these, 4 of 4 cows with C renale infection and 5 of 7 cows with E coli infection recovered; the remaining 2 cows with E coli infection died.  相似文献

Six adult ponies were trained calmly to assume and maintain left lateral recumbency without the use of sedative or immobilising agents. During a 30 min recumbent period, pHa, arterial oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions (PaO2 and PaCO2) and heart and respiratory rates were monitored at regular intervals to evaluate ventilatory response. Overall, there were no statistically significant differences found between mean control and recumbent or final standing values. When lightweight ponies were compared to heavyweight ponies, only mean PaO2 at 10 mins recumbency was different. This information supports the hypothesis that ventilation impairment during the first 30 mins of equine general anesthesia is primarily drug-mediated, rather than initiated by recumbency per se.  相似文献

SUMMARY Subclinical nutritional myopathy was induced in 5-month-old sheep by feeding them a diet low in vitamin E and selenium. Subsequently clinical myopathy was induced by dosing with protected polyunsaturated fatty acids. Plasma activities of creatine kinase (CK), pyruvate kinase, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase and aldolase, enzymes of muscle origin, all remained above their reference ranges in clinically affected sheep, but fluctuated widely. Similar fluctuations occurred in subclinically affected animals, resulting in some activities being within the reference ranges and some above, at different times. Plasma malondialdehyde, an indicator of lipid peroxidation, proved of no diagnostic value. Terminal plasma CK activities were significantly correlated with microscopic damage in the vastus lateralis (VL), but not the vastus intermedius (VI) or the tensor fascia lata (TFL) muscles. AST was the most highly correlated with damage in VI and VL. In two clinically affected sheep successfully treated with an oral dose of α-tocopherol actetate all enzymes decreased steadily to within their reference ranges, at rates probably related to their plasma half-lives. These results suggest that measurement of plasma CK activity would be useful in monitoring recovery of treated sheep.  相似文献

There is a growing recognition of the harmful effects of lead exposure on avian and mammalian scavengers. This can lead to both lethal and non-lethal effects which may negatively impact wildlife populations. Our objective was to assess medium-term lead exposure in wild Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii). Frozen liver samples (n = 41), opportunistically collected in 2017–2022, were analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine liver lead concentrations. These results were then used to calculate the proportion of animals with elevated lead levels (>5 mg/kg dry weight) and examine the role of explanatory variables that may have influenced the results. The majority of samples analysed were from the south-east corner of Tasmania, within 50 km of Hobart. No Tasmanian devil samples were found to have elevated lead levels. The median liver lead concentration was 0.17 mg/kg (range 0.05–1.32 mg/kg). Female devils were found to have significantly higher liver lead concentrations than males (P = 0.013), which was likely related to lactation, but other variables (age, location, body mass) were not significant. These results suggest that wild Tasmanian devil populations currently show minimal medium-term evidence of exposure to lead pollution, although samples were concentrated in peri-urban areas. The results provide a baseline level which can be used to assess the impact of any future changes in lead use in Tasmania. Furthermore, these data can be used as a comparison for lead exposure studies in other mammalian scavengers, including other carnivorous marsupial species.  相似文献
