A central component of successful wildlife conservation is the understanding of public perceptions toward a species. We administered an online survey to Alabama waterfowl hunters (n = 284) to examine differences in awareness and knowledge of and attitudes toward Whooping Cranes. We investigated if these variables and/or birding specialization influenced likeliness to participate in conservation behaviors. Specialization level was positively related to awareness, knowledge, and conservation attitudes. Respondents with greater knowledge and favorable attitudes toward cranes were more likely to donate to a hypothetical crane conservation fund, and expert birdwatchers were more likely to belong to a birding organization than novice or intermediate birdwatchers. Our research supplements existing birding specialization literature by incorporating cognitive variables specific to Whooping Cranes. Findings suggested that enhancing knowledge regarding Whooping Crane conservation may be an advantageous strategy for promoting conservation and positive behaviors toward the species.  相似文献

Seven atopic dogs underwent intradermal allergy testing with 46 inhalant antigens before and after administration of a tiletamine/zolazepam solution (4 mg/kg of body weight, IV). This anesthetic protocol had no significant effect on the intradermal response caused by histamine, whole flea extract, or various inhalant allergens. Short-acting chemical restraint induced by the drug combination facilitated the intradermal testing procedure.  相似文献

The perennial Medicago sativa cv. Gabès is widely grown on saline soils in Tunisian oases. The mechanisms by which this NaCl‐tolerant cultivar maintains a positive growth balance were analyzed. In this plant of considerable agronomic interest, biochemical analyses were conducted in order to study the effects of salinity on mature leaves. Free‐radical detoxification mechanisms and changes induced by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in response to the NaCl stress were compared between the upper (young) and lower (old) carbohydrate source leaves. Long‐term NaCl (150 mM) treatment significantly reduced the size of source leaves supporting growth. Salinity damage was greater in the lower than in the upper leaves. This damage was associated with a high Na+ : K+ ratio and a decrease in the activity of H2O2‐scavenging enzymes, leading to lipid peroxidation. In lower source leaves that were mainly affected by ionic stress, superoxide dismutase (SOD) was overexpressed and guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) activity increased. In contrast, in upper source leaves that were mainly exposed to water deficit, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities increased whereas GPX activity was unchanged. The upper source leaves maintained adequate ionic and water status and an efficient ROS detoxification, allowing sinks to be supplied with photoassimilates and maintaining a positive growth balance in this cultivar of alfalfa.  相似文献

An exaggerated "horizontal" alignment of the heart (increased sternal contact) and tortuous, redundant aorta are often seen on thoracic radiographs of older cats. Eighty-five cats, divided into 3 age groups [young (6–15 months), middle aged (3–7 years), old (10–17 years)], were determined to be normal on history, auscultation, ECG, and echocardiogram. Lateral and VD thoracic radiographs were examined and measured for evidence of these changes. Forty percent of cats 10 years or older were found to have the horizontal cardiac alignment, and 28% had the redundant aorta. These changes were not seen in Groups 1 and 2 of younger and middle aged cats. The angle between the heart and sternum in Group 3 (old) cats was significantly smaller than the same angle in younger cats. Systemic hypertension and hyperthyroidism, possible pathologic causes for this variation, were unlikely related to the cardiovascular changes due to the large number of older cats with this change, and lack of evidence of left ventricular hypertrophy.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effect of the probiotics Pediococcus acidilactici and Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii on the intestinal colonization of O149 enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli harbouring the F4 (K88) fimbriae (ETEC F4) and on the expression of ileal cytokines in weaned pigs. At birth, different litters of pigs were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: 1) control without antibiotics or probiotics (CTRL); 2) reference group in which chlortetracycline and tiamulin were added to weanling feed (ATB); 3) P. acidilactici; 4) S. cerevisiae boulardii; or 5) P. acidilactici + S. cerevisiae boulardii. Probiotics were administered daily (1 × 109 CFU per pig) during the lactation period and after weaning (day 21). At 28 days of age, all pigs were orally challenged with an ETEC F4 strain, and a necropsy was performed 24 h later. Intestinal segments were collected to evaluate bacterial colonization in the small intestine and ileal cytokine expressions. Attachment of ETEC F4 to the intestinal mucosa was significantly reduced in pigs treated with P. acidilactici or S. cerevisiae boulardii in comparison with the ATB group (P = 0.01 and P = 0.03, respectively). In addition, proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6, were upregulated in ETEC F4 challenged pigs treated with P. acidilactici alone or in combination with S. cerevisiae boulardii compared with the CTRL group. In conclusion, the administration of P. acidilactici or S. cerevisiae boulardii was effective in reducing ETEC F4 attachment to the ileal mucosa, whereas the presence of P. acidilactici was required to modulate the expression of intestinal inflammatory cytokines in pigs challenged with ETEC F4.  相似文献

Clinical salmonellosis associated with Salmonella is increasingly reported in finishing swine. Since S. Typhimurium is often associated with these episodes and given that this serotype is among the most often reported in humans, we were interested to determine if various tissues and carcasses from animals coming from herds that were clinically affected were more likely to be contaminated by Salmonella compared to carcasses from animals raised in herds without any history of salmonellosis. Carcasses from animals from affected herds were significantly more contaminated by Salmonella while showing increased titers in antibodies directed against this bacterium. At the opposite, caecal contents and mesenteric lymph nodes from both groups of animals were similarly contaminated by Salmonella. In the second part of the study, we studied the persistence of the bacterium in various tissues after an experimental infection with S. Typhimurium. We found that, after the infection, Salmonella persisted for as many as 7 d in many extraintestinal tissues, while it was present in the feces of infected animals for all 14 d of the experiment. These findings indicated that carcasses from animals that experienced salmonellosis during their growth phase are more likely to be contaminated by this bacterium and that precautions must be taken in order to ensure that clinically affected animals should be kept on the farm for at least 7 d before being shipped for slaughter.  相似文献

Pathogenic microorganisms in manure represents a potential hazard to human and animal. Few data describing the microbiological content of liquid hog manure intended for spreading are available in the scientific literature. The objective of this project was to verify the presence and estimate the persistence of Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Yersinia enterocolitica and Cryptosporidium spp. in liquid hog manure from storages under conditions typical of commercial swine production in Québec. E. coli content of liquid hog manure taken during the spreading period in the 32 hog operations varied between 0 and 5.52 log10 CFU/g with a 95% confidence interval of 3.16–4.23 log10 CFU/g. Salmonella spp., Y. enterocolitica and Cryptosporidium spp. were detected in 37%, 9% and 3% samples, respectively. Under the conditions of this experiment, the predicted number of days required to obtain a 90% reduction of E. coli populations varied between 15 and 26 days, while the predicted storage period necessary to reach undetectable levels was 54–114 days. The maximal persistence of Salmonella observed in this study was 88 days. A 73-day storage time was insufficient for the elimination of Y. enterocolitica.  相似文献

Acquired tricuspid valve stenosis (TVS) is a rare complication of endocardial lead placement in humans that has not been described in the veterinary literature. We describe a 6.5-year-old Border terrier that was presented with right-sided congestive heart failure 5.5 years after placement of a transvenous pacemaker. Severe TVS was confirmed by cardiac ultrasonography and appeared to be secondary to excessive endocardial pacemaker lead within the right atrium. Repositioning of the lead proved impossible and subsequent postmortem examination demonstrated fusion of the tricuspid valve (TV) leaflets around the endocardial lead with associated narrowing of the tricuspid valve orifice. In addition, the loop of the endocardial lead was anchored by thick fibrous tissue to the right atrial wall. This case report suggests that if sufficient endocardial lead is left inside the heart, in dogs undergoing transvenous pacemaker therapy, the redundant lead can become adherent to the tricuspid valve apparatus and cause valvular stenosis.  相似文献
