Candidate male and female breeders from nine genetic lines of turkeys that were reared intermingled, with the sexes housed in different buildings on the same farm, were vaccinated with a live Newcastle disease virus vaccine (B1 type, LaSota) just prior to the commencement of egg production. In 1999, an average mortality for all lines of 5.8% occurred during the 10 days immediately following vaccination and the level of mortality varied among lines. Mortality was, in general, greater in large-bodied lines than in small-bodied lines. Affected birds exhibited gross multiple areas of focal necrosis in the liver and spleen and congestion of the heart and lungs. The percentage mortality occurring following similar vaccination in 2000 averaged 2.6 for the 10 days following vaccination and mortality was greater (P < or = 0.05) in one line (F line) than the other genetic groups and higher in females than in males. Mortality in the F line, selected for increased body weight and known to be susceptible to various diseases, averaged 15.1% for both years. Attempts failed in both years to isolate Pasteurella multocida or other bacteria. There was a positive correlation between increased body weight and increased mortality following vaccination with the live LaSota vaccine.  相似文献

In 2001 and 2002, an outbreak of a previously unreported disease, associated with a border disease virus (BDV), caused high mortality in the Southern chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica) population in the Alt Pallars-Aran National Hunting Reserve in the Catalan Pyrenees (NE Spain). Between 2002 and 2006, sera and/or tissue samples taken from 116 healthy chamois shot during the hunting season, plus 42 from chamois affected by different diseases, were studied. A blocking enzyme-immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to study pestivirus seroprevalence in 114 healthy hunted and 31 diseased chamois, yielding positive results in 73.7 and 22.6% of the chamois, respectively. Comparative virus neutralization tests (VNT) performed on 42 seropositive samples with 6 pestivirus strains yielded statistically higher titres to BDV Spain 97, followed by BDV chamois, BDV 137/4, BDV Moredun, Bovine Diarrhoea virus-1 (BVDV-1) NADL and BVDV-2 atypical. Virological investigations for pestivirus detection were performed using an antigen ELISA test in 82 healthy and 18 diseased chamois, RT-PCR in 16 healthy and in all diseased chamois, and virus isolation in 14 diseased chamois. No viral antigen was detected in any of the healthy animals. A pestivirus, characterized as BDV by monoclonal antibodies, was detected in the 10 chamois showing clinical signs consistent with BDV infection. Sequence analysis in the 5' untranslated region (5'-UTR) revealed that they were grouped into the BDV-4 genotype. In the remaining chamois, infectious keratoconjunctivitis, pneumonia, trauma and contagious ecthyma were diagnosed. The cause of death was unknown in five chamois. The results suggest that the infection has become endemic in the population and that it could have a significant impact on chamois population dynamics.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of Bacillus licheniformis strain CIGBC‐232, isolated from the gut of shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and having antagonistic activity against Vibrio harveyi, on the immunity and larval quality of L. vannamei at various ontogenetic stages, in two separate experiments: (1) PL2 to PL17 exposed to the strain CIGBC‐232 under laboratory conditions (2) zoea I to PL8 exposed to the strain CIGBC‐232 and EPICIN 3W probiotics under farming conditions. The first experiment showed that phenoloxidase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities were improved in animals grown with CIGBC‐232 compared to the untreated control. In tests, the resistance to osmotic stress was also enhanced. During the second experiment, animals treated with CIGBC‐232 exhibited significant (< 0.05) increases in phenoloxidase activity (30–40% higher in zoea I–II, mysis II–III and PL 2–7) and in the respiratory burst (30% higher from PL 2 to 7) as compared to those animals that received EPICIN 3W. There was no significant difference in the lectins and agglutinins (except in PL1, 6 and 7), in peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities, in the resistance to osmotic stress, nor in the survival rate among treatments. CIGBC‐232 treatment was able to reduce, the level of presumptive Vibrio spp. with respect to EPICIN 3W treatment in the tank water as well as in animals. At the end of both experiments, the growth of shrimp, i.e. weight and length was increased by CIGBC‐232 treatment. This study showed the probiotic effect of CIGBC‐232, which appeared to have a better probiotic performance than EPICIN 3W treatment.  相似文献

Enteromyxoses are relevant diseases for turbot and gilthead sea bream aquaculture. The myxozoan parasites invade the intestinal mucosa, causing a cachectic syndrome associated with intestinal barrier alteration; nonetheless, their pathological impact is different. Turbot infected by Enteromyxum scophthalmi develop more severe intestinal lesions, reaching mortality rates of 100%, whereas in E. leei-infected gilthead sea bream, the disease progresses slowly, and mortality rates are lower. The mechanisms underlying the different pathogenesis are still unclear. We studied the distribution and expression changes of E-cadherin, a highly conserved protein of the adherens junctions, in the intestine of both species by immunohistochemistry and quantitative PCR, using the same immunohistochemical protocol and common primers. The regular immunostaining pattern observed in control fish turned into markedly irregular in parasitized turbot, showing an intense immunoreaction at the host–parasite interface. Nevertheless, E-cadherin gene expression was not significantly modulated in this species. On the contrary, no evident changes in the protein distribution were noticed in gilthead sea bream, whereas a significant gene downregulation occurred in advanced infection. The results contribute to the understanding of the different host–parasite interactions in enteromyxoses. Host and parasite cells appear to establish diverse relationships in these species, which could underlie the different pathological picture.  相似文献

Breeding for tolerance to iron (Fe) toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa L.) is hindered by lack of a suitable screening technique. In the culture solution methods used to date, a major difficulty has been maintaining an excess level of iron concentration in order to reveal toxicity symptoms. Experimental results showed that this problem was solved by lowering the solution temperature to around 20°C, at which leaf discoloration in susceptible cultivars became more pronounced. At 20°C Fe uptake was increased from a threshhold content of 300 mg/kg of dry weight of shoot for toxic symptom to more than 1000mg/kg in susceptible and in tolerant cultivars. Concentrations of other related minerals in the plant tissue, i.e., potassium (K) and phosphorus (P), were not affected by the low solution temperature itself but by Fe content, which can be inferred on the basis of their response curves to the excess Fe treatment. Using the proposed screening method makes it possible to obtain reproducible results in screening a large number of plants or breeding lines.  相似文献

Two new polyisoprenylated benzophenones, 18-ethyloxy-17-hydroxy-17,18-dihydroscrobiculatone A and 18-ethyloxy-17-hydroxy-17,18-dihydroscrobiculatone B, together with the known scrobiculatones A and B, were isolated from Venezuelan propolis. Forty-five-day-old seedlings of sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) and Citrus macrophylla Wester, the most commonly used rootstocks in lemon orchards, were grown in nutrient solutions containing 1 (control), 10, 20, 30 or 60 mM NaCl for 14 days. The effects of salinity on growth, uptake, transport and accumulation of Cl- and Na+ ions in leaves, stem and four root segments were studied. The 60 mM NaCl treatment reduced leaf dry mass more in C. macrophylla (40%) than in sour orange (20%), whereas it reduced root dry mass more in sour orange (36%) than in C. macrophylla (20%). In C. macrophylla, Cl- and Na+ uptake rates were high at the beginning of the saline treatments, but low at the end of the 14-day experiment. In contrast, sour orange showed high uptake rates at the beginning and end of the experiment. In response to increasing salinity, root and shoot concentrations of Cl- and Na+ increased in sour orange, but not in C. macrophylla. Different loading characteristics of Cl- and Na+ were observed between young and old segments of the root system. In general, old root segments reached quasi-steady-states later than young root segments. These results suggest that sour orange and C. macrophylla have different regulatory mechanisms for uptake and transport of Cl- and Na+.  相似文献
