Objective
To examine the effect of sternal or lateral recumbency, with or without cranial extension of the hindlimbs, on the distance between the dorsal lumbosacral laminae in dogs.Study design
Blinded, randomized, crossover, experimental study.Animals
A total of 19 canine cadavers.Methods
Computed tomography of the lumbosacral junction was performed in four positions: sternal and right lateral recumbency, with hindlimbs extended cranially or not. Order of positioning was randomized. The lumbosacral interlaminar (LSI) distance, defined as the distance between the dorsal laminae of the seventh lumbar vertebra (caudal margin) and sacrum (cranial margin), was measured for each position by two independent assessors who were unaware of positioning. Mean distances in each position were compared using a paired t-test, corrected for multiple comparisons.Results
For n = 19 cadavers [6 female; median (range) age 9 (0.3–16) years; weight, 20.4 (1.0–34.0) kg], cranial extension of the hindlimbs increased the LSI distance, compared with control, in both sternal (9.2 ± 2.2 mm versus 3.1 ± 1.3 mm, p < 0.001) and right lateral recumbency (8.2 ± 1.9 mm versus 4.9 ± 1.5 mm, p < 0.001). With the hindlimbs extended cranially, sternal recumbency increased LSI distance when compared with right lateral recumbency (p < 0.001).Conclusions and clinical relevance
Cranial extension of the hindlimbs in both sternal and lateral recumbency increases the LSI distance to an extent that is both statistically significant and of potential clinical relevance. Although ease of epidural access or injection was not assessed, the small (1 mm) difference in LSI distance between cranial hindlimb extension in sternal and right lateral recumbency is unlikely to be of clinical relevance. Conversely, cranial extension of the hindlimbs in either sternal or lateral recumbency would be expected to facilitate epidural injection. 相似文献22.

The use of non invasive sampling, such as collection of conjunctival swabs, as a diagnostic tool for the detection of Leishmania DNA is of interest. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic utility of detecting Leishmania infection with the use of conjunctival swab samples in dogs living in a highly endemic area for leishmaniosis and to investigate, for the first time, the presence of Leishmania DNA in oral swabs in the same population. One hundred sixty-three dogs living outdoor and recruited in various provinces of Sicily were studied. Leishmania infantum indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT), delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction to leishmanin (DTH) and real-time PCR of blood (BL), lymph node (LN), conjunctival (CS) and oral swab (OS) samples were performed. The positive PCR percentages in LN, CS, OS and BL samples were: 24.5%, 22.1%, 8.7% and 5.5%, respectively. Serological and DTH positive percentages were 27.0% and 73.8%, respectively. Seropositive and LN-PCR positive dogs had a high likelihood to be positive by CS-PCR. The similar positive PCR percentages found in CS and LN samples suggest the use of CS-PCR as non-invasive alternative technique to LN-PCR for the detection of Leishmania infection in dogs. Plant proteins are being used as a replacement for animal proteins in wine fining. The surface hydrophobicity of plant proteins in four commercial preparations differing for their origin and processing was assessed by using a fluorescent hydrophobic probe in wine-like media. Displacement of the probe by addition of wine phenolics was measured as a way to compare and predict to some extent the efficiency of these proteins in wine fining. It was found that the binding of polyphenols was much more specific than that of the hydrophobic probe. Further analysis of the polyphenol pattern in protein-treated wine-like solutions pointed out two relevant facts: (1) proteins may interfere with the chemistry of the interactions between polyphenols and other wine components; (2) individual protein preparation having different surface hydrophobicities also have different specificities in binding different polymeric forms of the polyphenols and in their substitution products. These findings are related to the possible carry-over of transition metals and may be worth exploring for custom tailoring the fining process. Whether the practical application of the latter finding will call for production and/or screening of plant-derived proteins with features appropriate to this task remains to be investigated. However, the approaches presented in this study may be used for large-scale screening of protein suitability for fining application under laboratory conditions, providing guidelines for their use in actual winemaking applications. 相似文献

Artichoke Italian latent virus (AILV), Artichoke latent virus (ArLV), Artichoke mottled crinkle virus (AMCV), Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV), Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Pelargonium zonate spot virus (PZSV), Tomato infectious chlorosis virus (TICV), Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) are damaging to artichoke. We have developed a protocol enabling the simultaneous detection of these artichoke viruses by non-isotopic dot blot hybridisation with DNA probes. The probe mix detected all viruses with high specificity and identical to that obtained using individual probes. Thirty 6-trifluoromethylpyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidines were synthesised and tested for antifungal activity in vitro against ten phytopathogenic fungi of different taxonomic classes. Six of the compounds had noteworthy activity against Sclerotinia minor, Corticium solani and Phoma betae. Bergamot (Citrus bergamia, Risso) is a fruit most knowledgeable for its essential oil (BEO) used in aromatherapy to minimize symptoms of stress-induced anxiety and mild mood disorders and cancer pain though the rational basis for such applications awaits to be discovered. The behavioural and EEG spectrum power effects of BEO correlate well with its exocytotic and carrier-mediated release of discrete amino acids endowed with neurotransmitter function in the mammalian hippocampus supporting the deduction that BEO is able to interfere with normal and pathological synaptic plasticity. The observed neuroprotection in the course of experimental brain ischemia and pain does support this view. In conclusion, the data yielded so far contribute to our understanding of the mode of action of this phytocomplex on nerve tissue under normal and pathological experimental conditions and provide a rational basis for the practical use of BEO in complementary medicine. The opening of a wide venue for future research and translation into clinical settings is also envisaged. 相似文献

Collagen has become a key-molecule in cell culture studies and in the tissue engineering field. Industrially, the principal sources of collagen are calf skin and bones which, however, could be associated to risks of serious disease transmission. In fact, collagen derived from alternative and riskless sources is required, and marine organisms are among the safest and recently exploited ones. Sea urchins possess a circular area of soft tissue surrounding the mouth, the peristomial membrane (PM), mainly composed by mammalian-like collagen. The PM of the edible sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus therefore represents a potential unexploited collagen source, easily obtainable as a food industry waste product. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to extract native collagen fibrils from the PM and produce suitable substrates for in vitro system. The obtained matrices appear as a homogeneous fibrillar network (mean fibril diameter 30–400 nm and mesh < 2 μm) and display remarkable mechanical properties in term of stiffness (146 ± 48 MPa) and viscosity (60.98 ± 52.07 GPa·s). In vitro tests with horse pbMSC show a good biocompatibility in terms of overall cell growth. The obtained results indicate that the sea urchin P. lividus can be a valuable low-cost collagen source for mechanically resistant biomedical devices. 相似文献
