On the basis of routine diagnostic examinations of 12424 bovine faeces samples for larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus, performed during the period 1963 through 1977, some calculations and reflections have been made on the incidence and epidemiology of lungworm infection in cattle in Denmark. It seems justified to conclude that dictyocaulosis is an important disease in heifers and cows as well as in calves. A distinct seasonal variation in the incidence of lungworm infection is apparent, in that more than 85% of the faeces samples were submitted within the period July through October. Lungworm larvae could be demonstrated in faeces samples from cattle during the winter and spring- This is considered to be of great importance with a view to re-establishment of the infection in the following grazing season. Overwintering of larvae on pastures seems possible. too, since patent infections among calves were demonstrated already in May and June. A comparison of meteorological data with totals of samples submitted and with relative numbers of positive samples seems to confirm, that both the level and the spread of lungworm infections are influenced by the amount of rainfall during the period June through August.  相似文献

Insect resistant Bt-maize (MON 810) expresses active Cry1Ab endotoxin derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Snails constitute non-target soil species potentially exposed to Bt-toxin through consumption of plant material and soil in fields where transgenic plants have been grown. We studied the effect of the Cry1Ab toxin on survival, growth and egg hatchability of the snail Cantareus aspersus. From the age of 4 to 88 weeks, snails were fed either powdered Bt-maize or non-Bt-maize and exposed to soil samples collected after harvesting either the Bt-maize or non-Bt-maize. We applied four treatments: non-Bt soil + non-Bt-maize (MM); Bt soil + Bt-maize (BB), non-Bt soil + Bt-maize (MB), Bt soil + non-Bt-maize (BM). Eggs laid by snails not exposed to Bt-toxin were also exposed to the two types of soils (Bt and non-Bt soil).At the end of growth (47 weeks of exposure), snails exposed to Bt-toxin in food and soil (BB) had a growth coefficient (GC) 25% lower than unexposed snails (MM). After the first period of reproduction (68 weeks) a significant difference remained for body mass GC between the BB and MM treatments. Differences in body mass were not significant at the end of exposure (88 weeks). For snails not previously exposed to Bt material, hatchability of eggs was similar in the soils tested. The outcome of the experiments indicates that, in growing snails, long-term exposure is needed to reveal an effect of Bt-maize. The hazard analysis of Bt-maize which we performed, based on a worst-case scenario, i.e. snails having no food choice, should now be complemented by other simple measurements, e.g. food intake, to understand the underlying mechanisms involved.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to assess the effect of soil cracks on soil moisture distribution under various sprinkler irrigation applications and to identify the optimal irrigation strategy that enhances soil moisture distribution and reduces water drainage for the upper soil layer 0–250 mm. The assessment was made for six irrigation events: the first two were for 10 and 46 mm water applications using a hand shift-set sprinkler system. The second set was for 43 and 19 mm water applications using the lateral move system with fixed sprayer heads and the third pair of events were for 43 and 32 mm water applications using the lateral move system with rotating sprinklers. The experiments were conducted on two adjacent fields at the University of Queensland, Gatton, Australia. Each field was divided into 2 m × 2 m grids that covered 62 sampling locations. For each event, the initial soil moisture content (SMC) was measured at each sampling location before irrigation. After irrigation, catch can readings were recorded for each sampling location. After 12 h overnight, the second set of soil moisture measurements was taken at each location. The area1 distribution of SMC for the studied applications was quantified. An attempt was made to identify the relationship between the applied water uniformity using catch cans and the soil moisture uniformity using gravimetric water content measurements. The study also took into consideration variables that could affect the soil physical and hydrological properties including the field slope, the soil texture, the infiltration rate, the salt content and the soil organic matter content of the two fields. Since the soils were cracking clay Vertisols, further analyses were conducted on the crack dynamics, size and distribution using image analysis techniques. The research findings demonstrated that the cracks were the main contributors to water drainage below 250 mm soil depth due to the micro-run off from the crust surface to the cracks. The cracks ranged from a few millimeters to more than 40 mm in width. It was observed that the cracks which were wider than 15 mm remained open after irrigation for the specified application rates. Improving the irrigation system application uniformity did not always result in higher uniformity of the surface SMC (0–250 mm). The event that best enhanced soil moisture distribution and thus improved soil moisture recharging was observed after the sixth irrigation event when the field received 32 mm water application. The soil was at a relatively high initial SMC of 25%, (which represented 43.3% of the plant available water range) and the sprinkler water uniformity was rather high above 87% Christiansen coefficient of uniformity (CUc). At this SMC, the extent of soil cracking is limited.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The phytoplasma "Candidatus Phytoplasma australiense" has been reported from New Zealand and Australia, where it has been associated with a range of host plants, especially since the 1970s. Partial tuf gene sequences of 36 New Zealand (NZ) isolates from four different host genera revealed nine different variants, which clustered into two distinct groups without any obvious correlation with host or geographic region. Phylogenetic analysis of these sequences, together with those available from Australian isolates, revealed three distinct clades: one found solely in Australia, one found solely in NZ, and a third with representatives from both countries. These divisions are consistent with differences observed in the 16-23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer region; therefore, we conclude that they represent three distinct subgroups: tuf 1, tuf 2, and tuf 3. We estimated a time of divergence for the three clades based on a synonymous substitution rate calculated by comparing the complete tuf gene sequence from the Loofah witches'-broom phytoplasma and "Candidatus Phytoplasma australiense". Using a calibration date of 110 million years, the estimated time to a common ancestor for all clades (6 to 9 million years ago) suggests divergence during the Miocene, well after the geological separation of NZ and Australia.  相似文献

Two-year seedlings of Quercus robur (pedunculateoak) were root-pruned before transplanting in order toevaluate the importance of coarse versus fine roots onregrowth. Root systems were pruned by leaving c. 19,13 or 7 cm root from the root collar. Alternatively,coarse roots (>2 mm in diameter) were removed, leaving only the taproot and the fine roots (<2 mm)attached, or fine roots were removed from coarse rootsand taproot. Growth of shoots and roots after onegrowing season was compared to an unpruned controlunder standard nursery conditions. Seedlings rootpruned to 19, 13 or 7 cm were further tested undercompetition achieved by transplanting into a mixtureof clover and grass. Pruning of the root systemsignificantly reduced regrowth in terms of total plantDW in accordance with the severity of pruning, shootDW being more affected than root DW. Removal of coarseroots depressed final root DW whereas removal of fineroots reduced shoot DW and hence root:shoot ratioincreased. The study suggests that fine and coarseroots have different roles in root:shoot allocation.The competition test increased root:shoot ratioindicating that competition induced seedlings toallocate more of their resources into growth of theroot system.  相似文献

Deeper plant root systems are desired for improved water and nitrogen uptake in leaching environments. However, phenotyping for deep roots requires methods that enable plants to develop deep roots under realistic conditions. Winter cereals raise further complications as early growth occurs under low light and temperature during autumn and winter—conditions not met in standard glasshouse facilities. This study used tube rhizotrons of 2 m length, positioned outdoor under a rainout shelter to screen for depth penetration rates (DPR) of roots. Rooting depths of 1 to 1.5 m were achieved with 23 widely grown North European winter wheat cultivars in two autumn/winter and two summer experiments and nine of the cultivars were represented in two or more experiments. Heritability of DPR of roots was only consistent in autumn/winter experiments (27 %) signifying the importance of phenotyping in relevant seasons and environments. Depth penetration rate of roots varied significantly within the tested cultivars, from 1.39 (±0.35) mm °C?1 day?1 for cv. Tuareg to 2.07 (±0.34) mm °C?1 day?1, for cv. Mercedes. This study documented consistent differences of DPR among North-European winter wheat cultivars in long tube rhizotrons under semi-natural conditions, which may form part of future phenotyping facilities for deep rooting traits.  相似文献
