A 13-year-old, intact male, golden retriever was presented for glossomegaly. A diagnosis of a caudal lingual abscess was made by fine needle aspiration under general anesthesia. The dog showed marked clinical improvement following abscess drainage. Lingual abscesses should be included as a differential diagnosis in any dog with an unexplained acute glossomegaly. 相似文献

Ultrasound can be used to detect and evaluate both normal and abnormal lymph nodes, as well as aid in biopsy sampling procedures, an important part of staging procedures in cancer patients. Several parameters can be evaluated using ultrasound; lymph node size, margins, echogenicity, echopattern (echotexture), acoustic transmission, presence and distribution of vascular flow, and vascular flow indices. The most diagnostically helpful include the short/long axis ratio of the lymph node, the pattern of distribution of the blood vessels within the lymph node, and to some extent the resistive and pulsatility indices. This review discusses the use of ultrasound for detecting, evaluating, and sampling peripheral, abdominal and thoracic lymph nodes in small animals. 相似文献

The influence of the network structure of wheat gluten on the barrier properties against enzymes was investigated in vitro. The changes in the network structure were introduced by different temperature treatments. The modifications were assessed with solubility studies of wheat gluten proteins in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The physical barrier properties of wheat gluten membranes were investigated with transport studies examining the transfer of a model protein with no enzymatic activity (BSA) through gluten membranes. The protein network was an effective barrier for BSA, although lightly cross‐linked films were mechanically instable. Membrane breaks occurred in function of the cross‐linking density (percentage of SDS‐insoluble proteins) after only 24 hr for lightly cross‐linked films (≈30% SDS‐insoluble proteins), while highly cross‐linked membranes (≈80% SDS‐insoluble protein) were tight up to more than 33 days. The digestion experiments of the gluten films with pepsin showed that the hydrolysis of wheat gluten films with >72% of SDS‐insoluble protein was significantly retarded. In conclusion, technological treatments to increase the cross‐linking density of gluten have the potential to slow the digestion of cereal‐based foodstuff and to reduce the degradation rate of composite biomaterials. 相似文献

Protein to carbohydrate ratio in high-energy diets for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of dietary protein to carbohydrate ratios (P/CH, weight percentage) of P34/CH21, P39/CH15 and P44/CH10 was studied in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) with respect to growth and feed conversion ratio (FCR) in one medium-scale experiment (Experiment 1) and to slaughter quality in two production scale experiments (Experiments 2A and 2B). The dietary fat was maintained at 290 g kg−1 whereas the protein (fish meal) was exchanged with carbohydrate (wheat). Fish grown from approximately 1 to 4 kg were fed a restricted diet (iso-energetic on gross energy basis) or to satiation. Nitrogen, fat, starch and energy digestibilities were measured in a separate experiment. There were slight tendencies for lower growth (P = 0.06) and for higher FCRs (P = 0.06) in Experiment 1, and a slight tendency for a lower dress-out percentage in Experiments 2A and 2B (P = 0.10 and 0.20 respectively) with decreasing P/CH. The P/CH had no effect on the fat concentration of fillets, flesh colour or sexual maturation. The digestibility of starch decreased from 62.1% to 46.1% and the digestibility of energy from 84.9% to 79.5% when P/CH decreased from P44/CH10 to P34/CH21. Growth per unit digestible protein increased with decreasing P/CH. Feeding to satiation improved the growth but the FCR was higher than it was for restricted feeding. The calculated starch load per kg of fish growth increased with decreasing P/CH, whereas the effluent nitrogen decreased. 相似文献

Yeast is a potential alternative to fish meal in diets for farmed fish, yet replacing more than 50 % of fish meal results in reduced fish growth. In a 4-week experiment, 15 rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were cannulated and fed three diets each week: 30 % fish meal as a control (FM); 60 % replacement of fish meal protein, on a digestible basis, with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC); and 60 % replacement with Wickerhamomyces anomalus and S. cerevisiae mix (WA). Blood was collected at 0, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h after feeding. In the final week, fish were exposed to a 1-min netting stressor to evaluate possible diet–stress interactions. Significant increases in pH, TCO2, HCO3 and base excess were found after fish were fed the SC and WA diets compared with FM, which elevated blood alkaline tides. Yeast ingredients had lower buffering capacity and ash content than fish meal, which explained the increase in alkaline tides. In addition, fish fed the WA diet had significantly reduced erythrocyte area and fish fed SC and WA diets had increased mean corpuscular haemoglobin levels, indicating haemolytic anaemia. Higher levels of nucleic acid in yeast-based diets and potentially higher production of reactive oxygen species were suspected of damaging haemoglobin, which require replacement by smaller immature erythrocytes. Acute stress caused the expected rise in cortisol and glucose levels, but no interaction with diet was found. These results show that replacing 60 % of fish meal protein with yeasts can induce haemolytic anaemia in rainbow trout, which may limit yeast inclusion in diets for farmed fish. 相似文献

Trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) is found at high levels in wild Atlantic cod. Trimethylamine oxide is reduced to trimethylamine (TMA) during iced storage. In this study, the levels of TMAO and TMA in wild and farmed cod and the impact of storage, gender and season on these levels were investigated. Wild cod had higher levels of TMAO than farmed cod. Wild cod also had higher levels of TMA after 15 days of iced storage. Farmed cod were found to have levels of TMA‐N <5 mg/100 g after 15 days of iced storage, which is below the maximum permitted level for fresh fish. Therefore, TMA appears to be an unsuitable measure of freshness in farmed cod. Female farmed cod had higher levels of TMAO than male farmed cod; no such difference between genders was found in wild cod. Female and male farmed cod had similar levels of TMA after post‐mortem iced storage. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) of female farmed cod was higher than that seen in male cod and this may be the underlying reason for the differences in muscle TMAO. Levels of TMAO in male farmed cod were higher during the autumn and were correlated with a larger HSI during the same period. 相似文献

- 1 Despite conservation programmes (India 1975, Nepal 1978) gharial populations (Gavialis gangeticus) have declined over their entire distribution range. Information about the current status and main threats is needed to implement effective conservation measures.
- 2 This study presents a survey (2003/2004) of the largest Nepalese gharial population in the Chitwan National Park that has benefited from regular re‐introduction of young gharials since 1981.
- 3 Population size estimates fluctuate between 34 (2003) and 38 (2004). The reintroduction programme, although of limited success, has helped to maintain the gharial population.
- 4 Gharials bask preferentially in large sand banks, and these sites must be protected.
- 5 The main threats are from a dam that causes fish depletion and flushes gharials from the protected area, sand mining and grazing that destroy basking sites, fishing that causes food shortage, drift nets that kill gharial, and water pollution.
- 6 Improvement in the survival of reintroduced gharials is needed. Strict protection of preferred basking sites and prohibition of fishing in the main settling zones are the principal conservation measures while in the long term, education and participatory management by local people are also necessary.
