1. Nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolisable energy values (AMEN) of three varieties of sorghum (white-low tannin, brown-medium tannin and red-high tannin) were measured in three species of poultry (cockerel, guinea fowl and Japanese quail) by a practical diet replacement (total collection) method. 2. Each variety of sorghum was tested at two concentrations (200 and 400 g/kg of reference diet) in 6 replications with one cockerel or guinea fowl or two quails per replication. The duration of the trial included a 10 d preliminary feeding period (on conventional grower diet) followed by a 12 d adaptation period (on reference and test diets) and a 3 d balance period (with recording of feed intake and excreta output). 3. The calculated AMEN values of different sorghum varieties were: white--12.9, 12.8 and 12.7; brown--12.7, 12.3 and 12.6; and red--11.4, 11.1 and 11.6 MJ/kg for cockerels, guinea fowls and quails, respectively. The mean AMEN value of red sorghum (11.3 MJ/kg) was significantly lower than those of brown (12.5 MJ/kg) or white sorghum (12.8 MJ/kg). A negative correlation was observed between tannin concentration and AMEN. 4. There was no significant difference in the AMEN values of white, brown and red sorghum varieties to the different poultry species. AMEN values of sorghum for the cockerel could, therefore, be used in practical feed formulation for guinea fowl and quail. 相似文献

The ability of two scented geraniums, Pelargonium sp. `Frensham' and Pelargonium sp. `Citrosa' to tolerate and accumulate salt was assessed in a hydroponic system under greenhouse conditions. Rooted cuttings were exposed to a range of salt concentrations (0 to 200 mM NaCl) over a two-week period. No visible signs of phytotoxicity were observed on scented geranium plants grown in solutions up to 100 mM sodium chloride. Tolerance to salt exposure was assessed with chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters. A significant decline in the efficiency of the photosystem (Fv/Fm) was observedin Frensham plants exposed to 200 mM NaCl for 14 days. The numberand size of active reaction centers (Fv/Fo) declined with increasing NaCl treatments in both species. Total chlorophyll content of both species decreased with increasing salt treatmentas a result of significant reductions in the chlorophyll acontent. At higher levels of sodium chloride treatment, salt extrusion was observed on the petioles and the leaf lamina. An accumulation in excess of 3.7 and 2.6% of the dry weight of Frensham plants as sodium was observed in shoots and roots, respectively. The effect of the accumulated sodium on the physiology of scented geraniums was assessed through biochemicalanalysis. The determination of amino nitrogen and stress-relatedmarkers revealed an initial increase in 4-aminobutyrate, proline, asparagine, glutamine, and alanine in the root tissues. Shoot analysis showed gradual increases in asparagine, aspartate, andalanine. These data provide the first evidence for the salt tolerating and accumulating potential of Pelargonium sp. and demonstrate the efficacy of this plant species for the remediation of salt contaminated hydroponic solutions. 相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L. cv. 777) plants grown in hydroponic culture were treated with 100 µM NiSO4 (moderate nickel (Ni) excess). In addition to growth parameters, metabolic parameters representative of antioxidant responses in leaves were assessed 24 h and 3, 7, and 14 d after initiating the Ni treatment. Extent of oxidative damage was measured as accumulation of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide in leaves 7 and 14 d after treatment initiation. Apart from increasing membrane‐lipid peroxidation and H2O2 accumulation, excess supply of Ni suppressed plant growth and dry mass of shoots but increased dry mass of roots and decreased the concentrations of chloroplastic pigments. Excess supply of Ni, though inhibited the catalase (EC 1.11.1.6) activity, increased peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7), ascorbate peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.11), and superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1) activities. Localization of isoforms of these enzymes (peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase) on native gels also revealed increases in the intensities of pre‐existing bands. Enhanced activities of peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase, however, did not appear to be sufficient to ameliorate the effects of excessively generated reactive oxygen species due to excess supply of Ni. 相似文献

Detection of infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV) in shrimp is complicated by the fact that certain virus-related sequences are integrated into the genome of Penaeus monodon in some parts of the world, which has been reported so far from Africa and Australia. In this study, we evaluated the highly specific and sensitive diagnostic primer sets for detection of infectious IHHNV and integrated virus-related sequence in 177 samples of P. monodon from India. A nested primer set, IHHNV648F/R and IHHNV309F/R was used to specifically detect infectious IHHNV and not the virus-related sequences. IHHNV was detected in 67.4% postlarvae (PL) and 34% adult samples using this primer set. The OIE recommended primers IHHNV392F/R and IHHNV389F/R gave positive reaction for 86.7% PL and 67% adult samples, while the primer pair 77012F and 77353R gave positive reaction with 46.7% PL and 20% adult samples. These primers were found to detect virus-related sequence integrated into the shrimp genome. The analysis of virus-related sequence by MG831F/R primers showed that 33.7% PL and 31.7% adult shrimp possessed Type A virus-related sequence. 22.8% PL and 10.5% adults had both IHHNV and Type A virus-related sequence. Cloning and sequencing 832 bp virus-related sequence from P. monodon from India revealed presence of five shrimp DNA markers between 439 and 825 bp. This study is the first conclusive report on the presence of Type A virus-related sequence in P. monodon from India. 相似文献

Parents and 318 F8 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from the cross, TAG 24 × ICGV 86031 were evaluated for peanut bud necrosis disease (PBND) resistance and agronomic traits under natural infestation of thrips at a disease hotspot location for 2 years. Significant genotype, environment and genotype × environment interaction effects suggested role of environment in development and spread of the disease. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis using QTL Cartographer identified a total of 14 QTL for six traits of which five QTL were for disease incidence. One quantitative trait locus q60DI located on LG_AhII was identified using both QTL Cartographer and QTL Network. Another QTL q90DI was detected with a high PVE of 12.57 using QTL Cartographer. A total of nine significant additive × additive (AA) interactions were detected for PBND disease incidence and yield traits with two and seven interactions displaying effects in favour of the parental and recombinant genotype combinations, respectively. This is the first attempt on QTL discovery associated with PBND resistance in peanut. Superior RILs identified in the study can be recycled or released as variety following further evaluations. 相似文献

Stocking density is an important factor in cage aquaculture of finfish. Effects of high stocking density (35 fish cubic m?1) on a range of biochemical and immunological parameters in Asian seabass reared in open sea floating net cages were compared to fish held in relatively low density (15 fish cubic m?1). The results revealed that chronic stress due to high stocking density induced variations in most of the parameters studied as evidenced by increased cortisol and glucose levels and decreased activity of lysozyme, myeloperoxidase and complement. Production of reactive oxygen species, total leucocyte count and total serum protein were also decreased, whereas anti-protease, alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase activities were increased in high stocking-density group when compared to low stocking-density group. Effects of chronic stress due to high stocking density were discussed in relation to variations in these parameters. 相似文献
