A three-year-old female spayed Golden retriever presented with a two-week history of regurgitation due to oesophageal stricture formation. Further diagnostics revealed two oesophageal strictures located at the thoracic inlet and caudal to the heart base, respectively. Endoscopic balloon dilation was performed four times at weekly intervals but recurrence of stricture formation was noted clinically within a few days after each procedure and was confirmed endoscopically. Finally, intralesional injection of triamcinolone acetonide was performed in combination with the fifth balloon dilation procedure. The dog recovered clinically and a final endoscopic examination performed 16 weeks after the injection did not reveal any evidence of oesophageal strictures. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the magnitude and consequences of agricultural injuries, and to reveal potential risk factors among agricultural household members. The Regional Rural Injury Study (RRIS-II) collected injury and exposure data on agricultural households of 16,538 people in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska for each six-month period of 1999. Adjusted injury rates, consequences, and potential risk factors were identified through analyses. Selection of variables for multivariate analyses was based on a causal model. Injuries reported here occurred while the individuals were involved in activities associated with their own farm or ranch, unless otherwise stated. Estimates of injury rates and the effects of various exposures were derived by Poisson and logistic regression. These models accounted for correlation within both subject and household, and were adjusted for non-response. The rate of agricultural injury to household members on their own operation was 74.5 injuries per 1,000 persons per year. Differences in rates due to age and gender diminished when rates were calculated according to hours worked. Although only 5% of injured persons required in-patient hospitalization, 28% required emergency department treatment, and 84% required some type of professional health care. Moreover, 47% of all injuries required time off from agricultural work, and 7% required time off from non-agricultural work. In multivariate analyses, decreased risks were associated with Minnesota, and increased risks were identified for those with prior injuries and for males.This study provides a basis for further research on agricultural injuries and their prevention. 相似文献

A previous proteomic study examining the plasma acute‐phase response of rainbow trout to sterile inflammation highlighted an unidentified 9.5‐kDa spot using 2D‐PAGE, which was dramatically increased. The 15 amino acid sequence obtained from this protein spot allowed rapid amplification of cDNA ends PCR to generate a 443‐bp nucleotide sequence that was 98.6% similar to type‐4 ice‐structuring protein LS‐12 from Atlantic salmon Salmo salar Linnaeus. Quantitative reverse translation PCR and an ELISA were used to measure gene expression and plasma concentrations of LS‐12 following experimental intraperitoneal injection of rainbow trout with either 106 or 108 colony‐forming units (CFU) of Flavobacterium psychrophilum. There was no significant change in the plasma concentration of LS‐12 up to 15 days post‐infection in any group. Hepatic LS‐12 gene expression was significantly reduced at 3 and 6 days (p < 0.001) post‐infection in fish injected with 108 CFU of F. psychrophilum relative to control fish, while branchial or head kidney expression was unchanged. Infected fish had significantly increased hepatic gene expression of serum amyloid A, confirming an acute‐phase response. Salmon of the Southeastern U.S.: Sucker migrations deliver resource subsidies to oligotrophic stream

The ability for migratory fishes to move commonly limiting resources such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) between discrete environments can have pronounced effects on recipient ecosystems. To further understand the geographic and taxonomic scope of migratory fish resource subsidies, we quantified N and P subsidies delivered by adfluvial suckers (Smallmouth Buffalo, Ictiobus bubalus) via excretion, eggs and carcasses to a small oligotrophic stream during their annual spawning migration. We also compared nutrient inputs from migrant buffalo with watershed nutrient export to assess the likelihood that delivered nutrients were ecologically important. We estimated that approximately 67,000 buffalo delivered 730 kg of N and 80 kg of P to Citico Creek as a result of excretion and egg subsidies across three migration waves. We estimated that carcasses delivered negligible amounts of N and P due to extremely low retention. The ratio of migrant inputs (Mw) to system export (Ew; Mw/Ew) varied amongst three migration waves and compounds (i.e. dissolved inorganic nitrogen, ammonium and soluble reactive phosphorus), with values for Mw/Ew ranging from 0.25 to 5.10, reflecting the potential of nutrient subsidies to exceed nutrients exported from the system under certain conditions. Our findings suggest that suckers have the potential to deliver large resource subsidies to their spawning habitats and that these subsidies may be ecologically important, thus warranting additional consideration of the functional relevance of nongame fishes and their migrations. 相似文献
