The response of bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to different levels of arsenic (As) and salinity was investigated, including the processes of uptake, distribution, and accumulation of As and the effect of arsenite and salinity on plant growth and fruit production. The experiment was performed in soilless culture at two levels of As: 2 and 5 mg As L‐1 [added as sodium arsenite (NaAsO2)], and three saline levels [only sodium chloride (NaCl) was added]: 1,000,2,000, and 4,000 μS#lbcM‐1. Arsenic uptake and concentration in root increased upon increased NaAsO2 concentration in the nutrient solution. However, the increase in the As root content was not proportional to the As level in the nutrient solution. High levels of salinity in solution decreased As uptake and the concentration of As in root, stem, and leaf. Upon uptake, As was readily translocated to the aerial organs and approximately half of the absorbed As was transported to the upper parts of the bean plants. The As concentration in fruit always remained below the recommended limit for As content in fruit and edible vegetal products. While salinity did not significantly affect plant growth, arsenite was found to be phytotoxic to the bean plants. 相似文献

Tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum), cucumber (Cucumis sativus), pepper (Capsicum annuum), and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) were grown on rockwool or perlite substrate with nutrient solution. Fe was administered as the Fe complex of the chelator ethylenediamine di-(o-hydroxyphenylacetic acid) (EDDHA) or Fe(NH4)2(SO4)2 in the nutrient solution or as inorganic iron in the substrate. Roots and leaves of plants grown on Fe-EDDHA contained EDDHA in quantities up to 0.27 × the amount of Fe, which is interpreted as an indication of the contribution of passive chelate absorption to Fe uptake. Fruits of tomato and pepper, and leaves of lettuce contained only traces of EDDHA. Breakdown of the chelator in leaves of pepper and tomato is estimated to have been between 0.5 and 2% per day. In tomato fruits, lycopene content was lowered in plants growing on Fe-EDDHA. Cucumber growing on Fe-EDDHA suffered from serious infection by the mildew Sphaerotheca fusca; the plants growing on an inorganic source of iron were resistant. The impact on soil of applying sugarbeet vinasses (V) was analyzed through a field experiment in horticulture greenhouse, arranged in a 23 factorial design. Two levels of three independent variables--application of V, use of polyethylene cover (PC) on the soil. and soil depth (D)---on various dependent variables were studied. Vinasses favoured crop yield and reduced the number of Meloidogyne incognita juveniles in soil. The concentrations ofN. P and K increased with the interaction VxD, with PC also increasing N concentration. The amounts of humic acids and humin decreased with D; fulvic acid concentration increased with V, but decreased with the interaction VxPC. Soil physical factors were improved mainly with D and V. Aromaticity of humic acid-like fractions increased ~'itb V. In general, V showed significant effects mainly on the topsoil, suggesting low leaching risks. The results indicate that the levels of the independent factors improving a group of variables were not the same that those contributing to another group. Therefore, their best combination should be determined for each scenario to achieve optimum agroecological performance. 相似文献

One-day-old turkeys were inoculated per os with material shown previously to induce stunting syndrome (SS). Weight gain and feed efficiency of inoculated poults from 1 to 13 days of age were impaired (P less than 0.01) compared with uninoculated poults. Examination of the jejunal mucosa by scanning and transmission electron microscopy showed the presence of long-segmented filamentous organisms (LSFOs) in poults that had been inoculated with SS. These organisms were not seen in jejuna of uninoculated poults. Further research is needed to characterize LSFOs and to determine their involvement, if any, in the adverse effects associated with SS. 相似文献

Increased pulmonary arterial pressures as a result of pulmonary disease are described in two cows with chronic pneumonia and one cow with acute pneumonia. Based on clinical signs of congestive right heart failure, increased pulmonary arterial pressure, and right ventricular hypertrophy, cor pulmonale was diagnosed in one cow. Two cows had increased pulmonary arterial pressure and signs of right heart insufficiency, but right ventricular hypertrophy was not identified. Two of the cows had ventral edema and exercise intolerance. All cows had jugular venous distention and increased right atrial and pulmonary arterial pressures. Peripheral arterial PaO2 was decreased in two cows, and not measured in the third cow. Although an uncommon cause of congestive heart failure in cattle at low altitudes, pulmonary hypertension should be considered in cattle with clinical right heart failure. 相似文献

The effects of biochar addition in improving soil physical properties are not clearly understood in mining tailings. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of three different types of biochars, in addition to marble mud (MM) and their mixtures, on the structural stability and water retention of mine wastes in Cartagena, Spain. Biochars were produced at 500 °C from pig manure (PM), cotton (Gossipium hirsutum L.) crop residues (CR) and municipal solid waste (MSW). Biochars were added to the mine waste (MW) along with MM and a control (no amendments added). These mixtures were incubated in cores for 90 days (25 °C). PM and CR mixed with MM decreased soil bulk density (from 0 · 98 g cm‐3 to 0 · 89 and 0 · 84 g cm−3, respectively). Amendments had no significant effect on total porosity whereas they increased gas diffusion by 100%, except for MSW. MM improved the plant available water from 0 · 59 to 2 · 56 cm as its combination with biochars, extremely relevant in water scarce climates. The micropores were likely replaced by mesopores when application of PM, CR, MM, and biochars + MM and they improved water retention. Total carbon (TC) and total nitrogen (TN) increased by using biochars and MM and no significant effects were assessed on aggregates. In general, MM mixed with PM and CR derived biochar improved the structural stability and exhibited a strong impact in reclaiming physical quality on mine tailings. A study of the anaerobic digestion of wastewater from the pressing of orange peel generated in orange juice production was carried out in a laboratory-scale completely stirred tank reactor at mesophilic temperature (37 degrees C). Prior to anaerobic treatment the raw wastewater was subjected to physicochemical treatment using aluminum sulfate as a flocculant and to pH reduction using a solution of sulfuric acid. The reactor was batch fed at COD loads of 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0 g of COD. The process was very stable for all of the loads studied, with mean pH and alkalinity values of 7.5 and 3220 mg of CaCO3/L, respectively. The anaerobic digestion of this substrate was found to follow a first-order kinetic model, from which the specific rate constants for methane production, K(G), were determined. The K(G) values decreased considerably from 0.0672 to 0.0078 L/(g h) when the COD load increased from 1.5 to 5.0 g of COD, indicating an inhibition phenomenon in the system studied. The proposed model predicted the behavior of the reactor very accurately, showing deviations of <5% between the experimental and theoretical values of methane production. The methane yield coefficient was found to be 295 mL of CH4 STP/g of COD removed, whereas the mean biodegradability of the substrate (TOC) was 88.2%. A first-order kinetic model for substrate (TOC) consumption allowed determination of the specific rate constants for substrate uptake, K(C), which also decreased with increasing loading, confirming the above-mentioned inhibition process. Finally, the evolution of the individual volatile fatty acid concentrations (acetic, C2; propionic, C3; butyric, C4; isobutyric, iC4; valeric, C5; isovaleric, iC5; and caproic, C6) with digestion time for all loads used was also studied. In this paper we report the antioxidant activity of different compounds which are present in coffee or are produced as a result of the metabolism of this beverage. In vitro methods such as the ABTS*+ [ABTS = 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] decolorization assay and the oxygen radical absorbance capacity assay (ORAC) were used to assess the capacity of coffee compounds to scavenge free radicals. The importance of caffeine metabolites and colonic metabolites in the overall antioxidant activity associated with coffee consumption is shown. Colonic metabolites such as m-coumaric acid and dihydroferulic acid showed high antioxidant activity. The ability of these compounds to protect human low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation by copper and 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride was also explored. 1-Methyluric acid was particularly effective at inhibiting LDL oxidative modification. Different experiments showed that this caffeine metabolite is not incorporated into LDL particles. However, at physiologically relevant concentrations, it was able to delay for more than 13 h LDL oxidation by copper. 相似文献

In recent years, the use of cyclodextrins (CDs) as antibrowning agents in fruit juices has received growning attention. However, there has been no detailed study of the behavior of these molecules as substances, which can lead to the darkening of foods. In this paper, when the color of fresh banana juice was evaluated in the presence of different CDs, the evolution of several color parameters was the opposite of that observed in other fruit juices. Moreover, a kinetic model based on the complexation by CDs of the natural browning inhibitors present in banana is developed for the first time to clarify the enzymatic browning activation of banana juice. Finally, the apparent complexation constant between the natural polyphenoloxidase inhibitors present in banana juice and maltosyl-beta-CD was calculated (Kci = 27.026 +/- 0.212 mM (-1)). 相似文献

An intense proteolysis of muscle proteins, mainly due to the action of endogenous proteolytic enzymes, has been reported to occur during the processing of dry-cured ham. This gives rise to an important generation of free amino acids and peptides of small size that contribute directly or indirectly to flavor characteristics of the final product. The nature and properties of the free amino acids generated during postmortem proteolysis have been well established. However, little is known about the identity of peptides generated during the processing of dry-cured ham. In the present paper, we describe the isolation (by ethanol precipitation followed by size exclusion and reverse phase chromatographies) and identification (by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight MS and collision-induced dissociation MS/MS) in a Spanish dry-cured ham of the following four oligopeptides: (A) TKQEYDEAGPSIVHR, (B) ITKQEYDEAGPSIVHRK, (C) DSGDGVTHNVPIYE, and (D) DSGDGVTHNVPIYEG. This is the first time that these peptide fragments have been reported in dry-cured ham at the end of processing. Sequence homology analysis revealed that the four peptides originated from muscle actin, indicating an extensive hydrolysis of this protein during dry-curing. Some of the cleavage sites corresponding to these fragments in actin were reproduced by other authors through the incubation of this myofibrillar protein in the presence of cathepsin D (EC 3.4.23.5), thus supporting a relevant action of this enzyme during the processing of dry-cured ham. 相似文献
