Laminitis is a debilitating disease of the equid foot and appears to result from altered metabolism due to insulin resistance (IR) or hindgut acidosis. These disorders may be elicited by high intakes of simple sugars or fructans in pasture grasses. The aim was to determine in vitro (i) whether grass fructan is degraded in the equid foregut and (ii) the fermentation kinetics and organic acid production in cultures containing grasses differing in fructan content incubated with an equid hindgut microbial inoculum. When grass fructan was incubated with equid gastric and small intestinal digesta, polymeric fructan was partially degraded to oligo‐fructan. When incubated with small intestinal digesta, but not gastric digesta, there was limited net loss of total fructan (oligomeric + polymeric fructan). When Lolium perenne of elevated (PRGH) or moderate (PRGL) fructan content was incubated with an equine hindgut microbial inoculum, the rate of fermentation and accumulation of lactate 6 and 9 h post‐inoculation were significantly greater for PRGH than for PRGL (P < 0·05). This may suggest that grass fructan ingested by grazing horses is incompletely digested in the foregut and passes into the hindgut, resulting in elevated production of lactate, which may indirectly lead to metabolic disorders such as laminitis.  相似文献

Algae contain a number of anti-inflammatory bioactive compounds such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) and chlorophyll a, hence as dietary ingredients, their extracts may be effective in chronic inflammation-linked metabolic diseases such as cardiovascular disease. In this study, anti-inflammatory potential of lipid extracts from three red seaweeds (Porphyra dioica, Palmaria palmata and Chondrus crispus) and one microalga (Pavlova lutheri) were assessed in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated human THP-1 macrophages. Extracts contained 34%–42% total fatty acids as n-3 PUFA and 5%–7% crude extract as pigments, including chlorophyll a, β-carotene and fucoxanthin. Pretreatment of the THP-1 cells with lipid extract from P. palmata inhibited production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-6 (p < 0.05) and IL-8 (p < 0.05) while that of P. lutheri inhibited IL-6 (p < 0.01) production. Quantitative gene expression analysis of a panel of 92 genes linked to inflammatory signaling pathway revealed down-regulation of the expression of 14 pro-inflammatory genes (TLR1, TLR2, TLR4, TLR8, TRAF5, TRAF6, TNFSF18, IL6R, IL23, CCR1, CCR4, CCL17, STAT3, MAP3K1) by the lipid extracts. The lipid extracts effectively inhibited the LPS-induced pro-inflammatory signaling pathways mediated via toll-like receptors, chemokines and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) signaling molecules. These results suggest that lipid extracts from P. lutheri, P. palmata, P. dioica and C. crispus can inhibit LPS-induced inflammatory pathways in human macrophages. Therefore, algal lipid extracts should be further explored as anti-inflammatory ingredients for chronic inflammation-linked metabolic diseases.  相似文献

The structure of paranasal sinuses in cattle is difficult to understand due to its complexity, age-related changes, and insufficient published data. In this prospective, anatomic study, we described the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses in the Holstein cow using computed tomography (CT) and cross-sectional anatomic slices. Twelve healthy adult Holstein cow heads were used for this study. The heads were scanned using CT, and frozen anatomical sections were taken. The locations, borders, and relationships of the paranasal sinuses were defined on the anatomical sections and CT images. The paranasal sinuses on each side of the head consisted of conchal (dorsal, middle, and ventral), maxillary, lacrimal, palatine, frontal, sphenoid sinuses, and ethmoidal cells. The frontal sinus pneumatized all bones surrounding the cranial cavity, except for the ethmoidal and body of basisphenoid bones. The sphenoid and ventral conchal sinuses were the most asymmetrical, and the middle conchal sinus was the simplest. The ventral conchal sinus was detected in eleven animals, one of which was unilateral. This sinus communicated with the middle nasal meatus (13/21) and ventral nasal meatus (8/21). Findings can be used as background for interpreting CT studies of cattle with clinical signs of sinonasal region diseases. Future cross-sectional radiological and reconstructive anatomical studies and investigation of the postnatal development of related structures in cattle are needed.  相似文献

Two-year-grafting experiments within and between Gossypium barbadense and Gossypium hirsutum accessions were conducted to study the source, transfer, and alteration of gossypol and methylation of (+)-δ-cadinene synthase (CDN) genes along with whole chromosomes of A01, A04, A11, D01, D05, and D11, harbouring the cotton CDNs, using the whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) method. The results revealed that although a glandless line used in this study had a low level of gossypol in the seeds, it did not contain any pigment glands, indicating that expression pathways of gland and gossypol were under genetic control of different loci in cotton. Grafts with glandless rootstocks produced significant amounts of total gossypol in the seeds, clearly demonstrating that the source of gossypol biosynthesis was not specific to the root. Heterografts consisting of scion GN, a glandless line, and scion TM-1 grafted on Pima 3-79 rootstocks caused increased total seed gossypol levels whereas homograft TT had decreased total seed gossypol levels. Alteration of total gossypol levels was also associated with gland density, and DNA demethylation levels of (+)-δ-cadinene synthase genes.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine the effect of olive leaf water extract (OEx) on the physical properties of chicken breast sausage (CBS) and the preventive effect of OEx against lipid oxidation in CBS during frozen storage. CBSs, to which 0.1 and 0.5% (w/w) OEx were added to minced meat, were stored frozen at −20°C for 60 days. The thawing weight loss of control CBS without OEx increased with the frozen storage period, while OEx-CBSs did not change, from 15 to 60 days in storage. The water-holding capacity, breaking strength, elasticity, and viscosity of control CBS decreased upon frozen storage, while those of OEx-CBSs did not change. The observation of CBSs using scanning electron microscopy showed that OEx-CBSs that were stored frozen, unlike control CBS, maintained a structure similar to their unfrozen counterparts. These results indicate that OEx confers resistance to CBS upon freezing. Furthermore, the application of OEx to CBS suppressed lipid oxidation, decrease in pH and discoloration induced by frozen storage. Thus, this natural OEx is useful in improving the physical and chemical qualities of frozen processed poultry foods.  相似文献
