Russet Burbank potatoes grown on Owyhee silt loam were subjected to early-season moisture stress by delaying initiation of furrow irrigation up to seven weeks after planting. A range of water stress treatments from 4 to 7 weeks after planting resulted in reduced plant size, tuber number and total tuber weight per plant 8 1/2 weeks after planting. Early-season water stress resulting from delayed irrigation onset was associated with improved tuber quality at harvest. Plants water stressed before tuber initiation had fewer tubers with dark stem-end fry colors, reduced percentage of US No. 2 potatoes, and increased percentage and size of US No. 1 potatoes. Increasing duration of soil water potential below -60 kPa early in the season was associated with declining total yield in 1985 but not in 1986. To obtain optimum yield and processing quality, the first irrigation should be no sooner than full plant emergence.  相似文献

Summary Two modifications of the selective-diagnostic crystal violet pectate (CVP) medium for soft rot erwinias were developed using a new formulation of sodium polypectate; these were a single layer medium and a double layer medium consisting of an agar base with a pectate overlayer. Both media contained 0.1% tryptone to promote growth and cavity formation by erwinias and 40 μg ml−1 novobiocin instead of sodium lauryl sulphate to increase recovery rate and selectivity. Colonies of the three erwinias commonly associated with potatoes formed characteristic deep cavities in the single layer modified CVP. Cavities in the double layer CVP although deep were smaller but remained distinct longer. Recovery rate and selectivity with both media were better than with the original CVP.  相似文献

Relating fish physiology, behaviour and experience to fitness‐related outcomes at the individual scale is ecologically significant, but presents difficulties for free‐ranging fishes in natural systems. Physiological state (e.g. level of stress or maturity) and experience (e.g. habitat use or exposure to stressors) may alter the probability of survival or reproduction. This study examined the relative influence of physiology and migratory experience on survival, migration duration, reproductive longevity, and egg retention in adult female sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) from a Fraser River population. One hundred and thirty‐five females were plasma sampled and tagged with radio transmitters and archival temperature loggers. Fish were tracked 55 km through two natal lakes to spawning grounds, following passage of a hydroelectric dam. For 39 females, we assessed the proportion of time within an optimal temperature (ToptAS) window (13.4–19.5°C), which provides ≥90% of maximum aerobic scope. Females with lower plasma glucose concentrations were more likely to reach spawning grounds. Early migrants spent longer in natal lakes. More time in the ToptAS window was associated with greater reproductive longevity and lower probability of egg retention. Later arriving females had reduced longevity on spawning grounds, as did females that retained eggs. Exposure to higher dam discharge was associated with reduced reproductive longevity and greater probability of egg retention, but not lower survival, indicating a delayed effect of dam passage. Our results underscore the complexity of factors governing fitness‐related outcomes for salmonids, particularly the importance of female experience in the days and weeks prior to spawning.  相似文献

Resveratrol has generated interest in cats due to reported health benefits. Cats have low activity of β‐glucuronidase, and we hypothesized they could not form two common resveratrol metabolites, resveratrol‐3‐O‐glucuronide and resveratrol‐4′‐O‐glucuronide. Resveratrol, 3 mg/cat/day, was given orally to intact male (= 5) and female cats (= 5) for 4 weeks. A control group (8 intact males) was used for comparison. Plasma and urine were collected weekly and analysed using high‐pressure liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Resveratrol and resveratrol‐3‐O‐sulphate, but no glucuronide metabolites, were detected in plasma and urine. Median (range 10–90th percentile) plasma resveratrol for control and treatment groups was 0.46 ng/ml (0.02–1.74 ng/ml) and 0.96 ng/ml (0.65–3.21 ng/ml). Median (range) plasma resveratrol‐3‐O‐sulphate for control and treatment groups was 6.32 ng/ml (2.55–10.29 ng/ml) and 11.45 ng/ml (1.47–53.29 ng/ml). Plasma resveratrol differed from control in week 4, while plasma resveratrol‐3‐O‐sulphate was different in all weeks (p < 0.05). Median (range) urine resveratrol for control and treatment groups was 0.28 ng/ml (0.05–1.59 ng/ml) and 19.98 ng/ml (8.44–87.54 ng/ml). Median (range) urine resveratrol‐3‐O‐sulphate for control and treatment groups was 26.71 ng/ml (10.50–75.58 ng/ml) and 108.69 ng/ml (11.83–231.05 ng/ml). All time points for urine resveratrol and resveratrol‐3‐O‐sulphate were significantly different from control (p < 0.05), except for weeks 1, 3 and 4 for resveratrol. The results support our hypothesis that cats are unlikely able to glucuronidate resveratrol, most likely due to a reduction in the activity of β‐glucuronidase.  相似文献
