We studied the development of rust disease, and biochemical and physiological responses, on Apocynum venetum plants inoculation with Melampsora apocyni that were growing in a greenhouse at four relative soil water contents. The soil conditions were 25% (severe drought), 50% (mild drought), 75% (optimal) and 100% (waterlogging) relative soil water content. Plants exposed to drought and waterlogging stress had a lower number of open stomata before inoculation, corresponding with the disease index on the 10th day after inoculation being lower than that of the optimal soil water condition. Inoculated plants exposed to severe and mild drought stress had a gradually enhanced resistance to the rust disease from the 10th day after inoculation, corresponding with the enhanced activity of polyphenol oxidase and phenylalanine ammonialyase. For the inoculated plants exposed to severe drought stress, hydrogen peroxide always remained at the highest level for any treatment, and they had a rapidly enhanced activity of peroxidase, two factors that were associated with suppression of disease development. A. venetum plants exposed to double stress of waterlogging and disease had a high activity of peroxidase that not only removed reactive oxygen to prevent or reduce cell injury but also enhanced resistance to the rust disease. In addition, a rapidly enhanced activity of phenylalanine ammonialyase in the waterlogging condition from the 25th day after inoculation was also associated with an enhanced resistance to the rust disease. Drought and waterlogging stress had a negative effect on the leaf photosystem, and in particular, there was a significant decrease in the net photosynthetic rate with an increase in the duration and degree of drought stress, and this lead to a statistically significant decrease in the weight of aboveground tissue compared with that of plants under optimal soil water condition (P < 0.05). Inoculating with M. apocyni had a slight effect on photosynthesis of plants during early disease development, but the physiological function of diseased leaves under the drought stress was damaged more seriously than that of non-inoculated plants in later disease development, leading to a large reduction in the net photosynthetic rate. However, this reduction did not cause a statistically significant (P > 0.05) decrease in the weight of aboveground tissue compared with that of non-inoculated plants under drought stress.  相似文献

In a previous study (Christensen, 1996. Prev. Vet. Med. 26, 107-118), an effect parameter changed from positive to negative depending on the model used. The study considered lameness in suckling piglets and the dataset included 7632 litters from 35 herds from the Health and Production Surveillance (HEPS) system database. To further investigate the change in the effect parameter, we performed a simple test to demonstrate the presence of herd-level variation. Finding substantial herd-level variation, we have re-analysed the data with special attention to the herd-level variation, and how to account for it. When herd-level variation was not accounted for in the model, a detrimental effect of prior treatment of the sow was seen but this turned into a beneficial effect when we accounted for the herd-level variation. The treatment of sow refers to any therapeutic treatment given to the sow after farrowing but before lameness or weaning occurred. This is, therefore, an example where not only the variances but also the effect parameters changed when we accounted for herd-level variation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess a ready-to-use formulation of dicyclanil to prevent blowfly strike on Merino sheep under Australian conditions. DESIGN: Randomised clinical trials conducted in an environment house and in the field. PROCEDURE: Two environment house trials were used to measure the protection against flystrike provide by a jetting or a ready-to-use 5% spray-on formulation of dicyclanil over 22 and 31 weeks respectively. Oviposition and strikes were recorded weekly for each sheep. In two field trials the occurrence of strike in Merino sheep treated off-shears or in long wool with dicyclanil or with cyromazine was compared for up to 38 weeks after treatment. Efficacy was assessed by calculating the cumulative percentage of sheep struck. RESULTS: Under environment house conditions, sheep jetted with dicyclanil at 1.50, 0.75 and 0.30 g per sheep developed 0, 8 and 9 strikes respectively during the 22 weeks of the trial, whereas there were 358 strikes present in the placebo group. Sheep sprayed with dicyclanil at 2.25, 1.50 and 0.75 g per sheep developed 5, 11 and 29 strikes respectively between weeks 15 and 31 after treatment, whereas there were 185 strikes present in the untreated controls. In field trials the cumulative percentage of sheep struck reached 1% between weeks 12 to 13 after sheep had been treated with cyromazine. Sheep treated with dicyclanil reached the 1% limit at week 21 after treatment. CONCLUSION: Under Australian field conditions, a ready-to-use 5% spray-on formulation of dicyclanil applied off-shears or to long wool protected Merino sheep from blowfly strike for a period of at least 20 weeks.  相似文献

From 1990 to 1994, a total of 21 sediment cores and 37 grab sediment samples were collected from the Milwaukee Harbor Estuary. Each sediment core was sectioned and dated using 210Pb and137 Cs radioisotope techniques. A total of 305 samples were analyzed for sixteen polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs). Grain size distribution, porosity, and total organic carbon content as measured by loss on ignition were also determined. The results provide a historical overview of the impact of industrialization in the Milwaukee area. Although highly variable, the concentration profile of PAHs show, in general, peaks in the 1950's through 1980's. The PAH concentrations have declined since then for most sediment cores. The current levels of total PAHs in most surface sediment samples range from 25 to 200 ppm. A few cores, some of which were collected in 1994, have an elevated PAH concentration at the surface. Toxicity of the surface sediments was evaluated by comparing with the benchmark values developed by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The most heavily contaminated area was found in the Kinnickinnic River between the Becher Street Bridge and the Wisconsin Wrecking Company Wharf. The highest total PAH concentration determined from seven vibra cores collected in this area ranges from 380 to 1000 ppm. The former Wisconsin Solvay Coke Company may have been a major point source of PAHs until the 1970's. Highway traffic and various industrial discharges also contribute to the sediment PAHs in this area.  相似文献

The mean trophic level of the species groups reported in Food and Agricultural Organization global fisheries statistics declined from 1950 to 1994. This reflects a gradual transition in landings from long-lived, high trophic level, piscivorous bottom fish toward short-lived, low trophic level invertebrates and planktivorous pelagic fish. This effect, also found to be occurring in inland fisheries, is most pronounced in the Northern Hemisphere. Fishing down food webs (that is, at lower trophic levels) leads at first to increasing catches, then to a phase transition associated with stagnating or declining catches. These results indicate that present exploitation patterns are unsustainable.  相似文献
