Using a mechanistic model, we compared five alternative farming systems with the purpose of transforming monoculture (MON) banana farms into mixed farming systems (MFS) with ruminants feeding banana by-products (leaves, pseudostems and nonmarketable fruits) and forage from the fallow land. The paper presents the main structure of the model (land surface changes, available biomass for animals, stocking rates, productive or reproductive indicators), and impact assessment (change in farm productivity) is discussed. Five MFS with typical local ruminant production systems were used to compare MON to the strategies using forage from fallow and/or integrating Creole cattle (CC), Creole goats (CG) or Martinik sheep (MS) into banana farming. One hectare MON shifted into an MFS allows a stocking rate of 1,184, 285, and 418 kg of live weight per hectare for CC, CG and MS, respectively. Banana by-products seem to be better valorized by the CC scenario. However, parameters such as length of the cycle, local prices for cattle, goat and sheep meat, work time and farmer's skills in ruminant management may have been taken into account by the farmer when choosing the ruminant species to rear.  相似文献

Background

The objective of this study was to investigate the association between average daily gain and the number of Lawsonia intracellularis bacteria in faeces of growing pigs with different levels of diarrhoea.

Methods

A longitudinal field study (n = 150 pigs) was performed in a Danish herd from day 29 to 47 post weaning. Every third day all pigs were weighed, subjected to a clinical examination and faecal samples were obtained. Faecal samples were subjected to dry matter determination and absolute quantification by PCR for L. intracellularis and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2). Association between average daily gain, faecal dry matter content, numbers of L. intracellularis bacteria and PCV2 genome copies in faeces was investigated in a multilevel mixed-effects linear model.

Results

Increasing numbers of L. intracellularis log10 bacteria/g faeces were significantly associated with decreasing average daily gain (P < 0.001). The association was decreasing with increasing faecal dry matter content (P < 0.01). The number of PCV2 log10 copies/g faeces was not significantly associated with average daily gain of the pigs (P > 0.5).

Conclusion

The results suggest a potential application of a PCR quantifying L. intracellularis in growing pigs. Faecal dry matter content must be taken into consideration in interpretation of such test results.  相似文献

The concept of autonomous farming concerns automatic agricultural machines operating safely and efficiently without human intervention. In order to ensure safe autonomous operation, real-time risk detection and avoidance must be undertaken. This paper presents a flexible vehicle-mounted sensor system for recording positional and imaging data with a total of six sensors, and a full procedure for calibrating and registering all sensors. Authentic data were recorded for a case study on grass-harvesting and human safety. The paper incorporates parts of ISO 18497 (an emerging standard for safety of highly automated machinery in agriculture) related to human detection and safety. The case study investigates four different sensing technologies and is intended as a dataset to validate human safety or a human detection system in grass-harvesting. The study presents common algorithms that are able to detect humans, but struggle to handle lying or occluded humans in high grass.  相似文献

Small-area estimation is a subject area of growing importance in forest inventories. Modelling the link between a study variable Y and auxiliary variables X—in pursuit of an improved accuracy in estimators—is typically done at the level of a sampling unit. However, for various reasons, it may only be possible to formulate a linking model at the level of an area of interest (AOI). Area-level models and their potential have rarely been explored in forestry. This study demonstrates, with data (Y = stem volume per ha) from four actual inventories aided by aerial laser scanner data (3 cases) or photogrammetric point clouds (1 case), application of three distinct models representing the currency of area-level modelling. The studied AOIs varied in size from forest management units to forest districts, and municipalities. The variance explained by X declined sharply with the average size of an AOI. In comparison with a direct estimate mean of Y in an AOI, all three models achieved practically important reduction in the relative root-mean-squared error of an AOI mean. In terms of the reduction in mean-squared errors, a model with a spatial location effect was overall most attractive. We recommend the pursuit of a spatial model component in area-level modelling as promising within the context of a forest inventory.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo describe the pharmacokinetics of intra-articularly (IA) administered morphine.Study designExperimental randomized, cross-over study.AnimalsEight adult healthy mixed breed horses aged 6.5 ± 2.3 (mean ± SD) years and weighing 535 ± 86 kg.MethodsUnilateral radiocarpal synovitis was induced by IA injection of 3 μg lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on two occasions (right and left radiocarpal joint, respectively) separated by a 3-week wash-out period. Treatments were administered 4 hours post-LPS-injection: Treatment IA; preservative free morphine IA (0.05 mg kg?1) plus saline intravenous (IV) and treatment IV; saline IA plus preservative free morphine IV (0.05 mg kg?1). Concentrations of morphine, morphine-3-glucuronide and morphine-6-glucuronide (M6G) were determined repeatedly in serum and synovial fluid (SF) by high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, at 2 and 4 hours and then at 4 hours intervals until 28 hours post-treatment.ResultsInjection of LPS elicited a marked and comparable synovitis in all LPS-injected radiocarpal joints. IA administered morphine was detectable in SF of all eight joints 24 hours post-treatment and in 6/8 joints 28 hours post-treatment. The terminal half-life of morphine in SF was estimated to be 2.6 hours. IA administration of morphine resulted in mean serum concentrations of morphine below 5 ng mL?1 from 2 to 28 hours after treatment.Conclusions and clinical relevanceIntra-articularly administered morphine remained within the joint for at least 24 hours. At the same time only very low serum concentrations of morphine and M6G were detected. The present results suggest that IA morphine at 0.05 mg kg?1 may be used for IA analgesia lasting at least 24 hours and give strong support to the theory that previously observed analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of IA morphine in horses are most likely to be mediated peripherally.  相似文献

Microbial biomass in soils of Russia under long-term management practices   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
 Non-tilled and tilled plots on a spodosol (Corg 0.65–1.70%; pH 4.1–4.5) and a mollisol (Corg 3.02–3.13%, pH 4.9–5.3), located in the European region of Russia, were investigated to determine variances in soil microbial biomass and microbial community composition. Continuous, long-term management practices, including tillage and treatment with inorganic fertilizers or manure, were used on the spodosol (39 years) and mollisol (22 years). Total microbial biomass (Cmic), estimated by the substrate-induced respiration (SIR) method, and total fungal hyphae length (membrane filter technique) were determined seasonally over a 3-year period. Long-term soil management practices (primarily tillage and fertilizer application) led to decreases in total microbial biomass (80–85% lower in spodosol and 20–55% lower in mollisol), decreases in the contribution of Cmic to Corg (2.3- to 3.5-fold lower in spodosol and 1.2- to 2.3-fold lower in mollisol), and 50–87% decreases in total fungal hyphae length compared to non-tilled control plots. The contribution of fungi to total SIR in virgin mollisol and fallow spodosol plots was approximately 30%. However, the contribution of fungi to SIR was approximately two times greater in tilled spodosol plots compared to a fallow plot. In contrast, the contribution of fungi to SIR in tilled plots of mollisol was less (1.4–4.7 times) than for a virgin plot. In summary, long-term soil management practices such as tillage and treatment with organic or inorganic fertilizers are important determinants of soil microbial biomass and the contribution of fungi to total SIR. A new species richness estimator applicable to probability sampling with fixed-area (a) plots in a finite-area (A) population is presented and tested in simulated sampling from three stem-mapped forest compartments, and from six large collections of forest inventory data. The estimator of richness is the average number of species per plot times the sum—over the N = A/n plots in a population—of the probability (p m ) of observing a new species in the mth plot (m = 1,…, N). A Cauchy distribution function is used to capture trends in p m . The parameters of the Cauchy distribution were estimated by optimizing a weighted maximum likelihood function. In comparison to five presumed best alternative estimators, the new estimator was ‘average’ with respect to bias, but best in terms of average root mean squared error. Taking the average of the estimates of richness produced by the five alternate and the new estimator would, generally, keep bias below 15 %. With relatively large sample sizes, the bias is moderately small (<10 %).  相似文献

We have previously presented an integrated linkage map of tomato chromosome 6, that showed the position of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers relative to a variety of classical markers. As for the short arm, map resolution has now been improved by crossing the chromosome 6 substitution line WSL6 to additional tester lines, carrying markers on the short arm. Molecular linkage analysis of the F2 populations enabled us to produce an integrated linkage map showing the position of molecular markers relative to the classical markers Aps-1, yv, Mi, Cf-2/Cf-5, tl and pds. In order to incorporate the centromere into the integrated map, a radiation-induced deletion mapping strategy was applied, using irradiated pollen from L. pennellii LA716 in crosses to a L. esculentum line recessive for the markers yv and tl, that flank the centromere. Molecular analysis of the hemizygous yv-deletion and tl-deletion plants identified among the F1 progeny, provided an estimate of the size of the respective deletions and, thus, of the position of the centromere relative to the molecular markers linked to yv and tl. This radiation mapping approach also provided evidence showing that, unlike published data, the root knot nematode resistance gene Mi as well as the Cladosporium fulvum resistance genes Cf-2/Cf-5 are located on the short arm.  相似文献

Grain legumes in crop rotations cause significant increases in yield for succeeding non-legumes, which cannot be explained simply by the small effect that legumes have on the soil nitrogen balance, as found in the analysis of N in crop residues. Besides known positive non-N-effects, other effects, mainly rhizodeposition and its contribution to the N balance and nitrogen dynamics after harvesting the grain, are poorly understood. In this study, N rhizodeposition, defined as root-derived N in the soil after removal of visible roots, was measured in faba bean (Vicia faba L.), pea (Pisum sativum L.) and white lupin (Lupinus albus L.). In a pot experiment the legumes were pulse labelled in situ with 15N urea using a cotton wick method. About 84% of the applied 15N was recovered for the three legume species at maturity. The 15N was comparatively uniformly distributed among plant parts. The N rhizodeposition constituted 13% of total plant N for faba bean and pea and 16% for white lupin at maturity, about 80% of below ground plant N, respectively. Some 7% (lupin)-31% (pea) of the total N rhizodeposits were recovered as micro-roots by wet sieving (200 μm) the soil after all visible roots had been removed. Only 14-18% of the rhizodeposition N was found in the microbial biomass and a very small amount of 3-7% was found in the mineral N fraction. In pea, 48% and in lupin 72% of N rhizodeposits could not be recovered in the mentioned pools and a major part of the unrecovered N was probably immobilised in microbial residues. The results of this study clearly indicate that N rhizodeposition from grain legumes represent a significant pool for N balance and N dynamics in crop rotations.  相似文献
