During the last 15 years a number of studies have shown increasing forest growth in central Europe, rather than a decline as was expected due to negative effects of air pollution. We have here used data from intensive monitoring plots spread over Europe for a five year period in order to examine the influence of environmental factors on forest growth. Evaluations focussed on the influence of nitrogen, sulphur and acid deposition, temperatures, precipitation and on a drought index calculated as deviation from the long-term mean. The study included the main tree species Norway spruce, Scots pine, common beech as well as European and sessile oak and was based on data from 363 plots. As many other factors besides nitrogen and temperature influence tree growth, expected stem volume increments were modelled using site productivity, stand age and a stand density index. Relative volume increment was then calculated as actual increment in % of expected increment. The site productivity, assumed to be given by site conditions and past environmental conditions, was either taken from expert estimates or computed from site index curves from northern, central and southern Europe. The model explained between 18% and 39% of the variance with site productivity being positively related and age negatively related to actual increment. The various models and statistical approaches were fairly consistent, and indicated a fertilizing effect of nitrogen deposition, with slightly above one percent increase in volume increment per kg of nitrogen deposition per ha and year. This was most clear for spruce and pine, and most pronounced for plots having soil C/N ratios above 25. Also, we found a positive relationship between relative increment and summer temperature, i.e. May–August mean temperature deviation from the 1961–1990 means. The cause–effect relationship here is, however, less certain. Other influences were uncertain. Possibly, sulphur and acid deposition have effects on growth, but these effects are obscured by, and outweighed by the positive effect of nitrogen deposition, because of collinearity between these variables. Drought effects were uncertain also, and one reason for this might be large uncertainties in the precipitation data: precipitation measured on some 50% of the plots correlated poorly with the precipitation data obtained from Europe-wide databases. The major finding of this study was a positive relationship between higher than normal volume increment on one hand and nitrogen deposition on the other hand.  相似文献

Forty-four Asparagus officinalis cultivars, gene bank accessions and breeding lines as well as thirty-four accessions of wild relatives of Asparagus were evaluated for resistance to Asparagus virus 1. Three different test strategies were developed for the assessment of individual plants: (1) natural infection under field conditions, or two vector-mediated infection assays using the green peach aphid Myzus persicae (2) in an insect-proof gauze cage or (3) in a climate chamber. The AV-1 infections were verified by DAS-ELISA and RT-PCR approaches. All tested 660 individual plants of A. officinalis germplasm were susceptible to AV-1 infection. In contrast, in 276 plants of 29 Asparagus wild accessions no virus infection could be detected. These resistant accessions comprised of nineteen diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid species of both the Eurasian clade and the African clade of the asparagus germplasm. Data of the AV-1 resistance evaluation are discussed in relation to the genetic distance of the resistance carrier and potential application in breeding.  相似文献

Beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) was modified with 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU). The equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of wood modified with DMDHEU calculated on a dry modified basis is reduced. Previous results have shown that the modification with DMDHEU does not alter the capillary condensation; therefore, the reduction in EMC seems exaggerated. The equilibrium constants of the Hailwood–Horrobin model (K d and K h) and the molecular weight of a hypothetical polymer of modified wood capable of adsorbing one molecule of water (W i) were calculated from the EMC on a dry modified wood basis (M) and on a dry wood basis (M R). The hypothetical polymer was also calculated by stoichiometry (W c) and compared to W i to estimate the number of operative OH groups. The number of operative OH groups decreased when M was used, in contradiction with the previously obtained results of differential heat of adsorption (∆H s). Therefore, the use of M R is recommended for the analysis of moisture sorption in wood modified with DMDHEU.  相似文献

Purpose

Flood events are expected to increase both in intensity and frequency due to climate change in the near future. From an environmental toxicology perspective, there is concern that such flood events could lead to the remobilization of contaminated sediment layers in rivers. The aim of this pilot study was to establish a novel and interdisciplinary framework combining methods of hydrodynamic engineering and ecotoxicological assessment to enable investigation of the potential risks associated with such remobilization events.

Materials and methods

Formulated sediment was prepared according to OECD guideline 218 and spiked with a mixture of four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (phenanthrene, chrysene, pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene) at concentrations of 3.3?C8.3?mg?kg?1 dry weight. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed as test animals to re-suspended sediments in three out of five experiments. The experiments were carried out in an annular flume designed to investigate transport behaviour of fine-grained sediments. Several physicochemical (e.g. pH) and sedimentological (e.g. turbidity) parameters were measured to characterise environmental conditions and erosion behaviour of sediments. Furthermore, exposure concentrations were measured by means of an in vitro assay (7-ethoxyresorufin-o-deethylase (EROD), RTL-W1 cell assay) and chemical analysis.

Results and discussion

Preparation and spiking of large amounts of formulated sediments were feasible but not practical. Successful spiking could be confirmed by the bioanalytical methods with the spiked sediments showing significantly elevated EROD induction compared to control sediments. Conditions within the annular flume remained stable throughout all experiments and were adequate to support rainbow trout. Flood events were successfully simulated, resulting in re-suspension of formulated sediment. Different erosion behaviours of sediments during the simulated flood events were observed and could be associated with changes in microbial composition of sediments due to differences in storage conditions. Therefore, maintaining constant storage conditions of formulated sediments is crucial to enable consistency and comparability among erosion experiments.

Conclusions

This study clearly demonstrated the feasibility of a combined hydro-toxicological approach in support of the investigation of the potential ecotoxicological relevance of sediment re-suspension events. However, based on the results presented here, it is recommended to include additional physicochemical parameters, such as redox potential and conductivity, and to extend the experimental setup to natural sediments and different aquatic organisms. Future studies will use natural sediments containing representative microbial communities and extracellular polymeric substances to enable extrapolation from the annular flume to conditions in natural flowing waters.  相似文献

? Recent studies indicate that fatty acids are formed in significant concentrations during the composting of organic household residuals. Their presence may be one major reason for depressed germination and seedling development that often result following application of compost. Experimental results in Sweden indicate that at least five to six months should elapse before low levels of fatty acids for cropping are reached in the composts. Purpose

Electromagnetic induction based metal detectors are commonly used in landmine clearance operations. Their performance can be seriously deteriorated by magnetic properties of the soil in which the landmines are buried.

Materials and methods

Soil magnetic parameters were studied at three locations in Southern Mozambique where soils had caused severe problems during former landmine clearance campaigns. Field work comprised a geological and pedological survey of soils and the parent rock materials. Soil and rock samples were analyzed to determine pedological standard parameters and magnetic susceptibility. Geochemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and thermomagnetic analysis helped to clarify the mineral composition and to specify the origin and properties of the magnetic minerals. The spatial distribution of the topsoil magnetic susceptibility was investigated in the field and characterized using geostatistical analyses.

Results and discussion

Despite different degrees of weathering of the investigated soils, their magnetic mineral composition is dominated by lithogenic (Ti-) magnetites. Moreover, there are clues for the pedogenic neoformation of ultrafine-grained ferrimagnetic minerals in two of the three topsoils. The deterioration of metal detector performance at the sites results from the high frequency dependence of magnetic susceptibility at two locations and from the distinct spatial variability of topsoil magnetic susceptibility at all locations.

Conclusions

To assess soil effects on the performance of modern metal detectors the investigations of frequency-dependent susceptibility and of spatial susceptibility distribution are the most meaningful tools. Summarizing, the topsoil magnetic properties of the investigated sites are predominantly influenced by their parent material and to a minor degree by pedogenic neoformation.  相似文献
