Structure-activity relationships between antibacterial activities and physicochemical properties of sulfonamides

Relationships between the antimicrobial activities of sulfonamides and physico-chemical properties including the acid dissociation constant (p K _a) and the hydrophobicity constant (π) were determined. The minimal inhibitory concentrations ( MIC ) of sulfonamides against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae , a gram-negative veterinary pathogen, were used. High performance liquid chromatography was applied for the determination of the electronic and hydrophobic parameters. Empirically determined relationships pointed out the dominant role of the degree of ionization on the antimicrobial activity. The data indicate that hydrophobic properties of sulfonamides, characterized by π, are of minor importance for the in vitro antibacterial activity. Because of the restricted p K _a range (4.9–7.7) it could not be established whether the relationship between pK _a and activity was linear or bilinear. Whenever o,m -disubstituted sulfonamides were included correlations decreased substantially. Relationships based on multicompartment equilibrium models were derived and indicated a bilinear relation between p K _a and MIC . Model-based equations showed that the antibacterial activity was governed by the extracellular ionic concentration of the sulfonamides whenever different intra and extracellular pH values were assumed in the equilibrium model. The antimicrobial activities of the sulfonamides against gram-positive organisms were also related to the degree of ionization of the sulfonamides in the agar medium.  相似文献

Summary A cat with weight loss, pyrexia and recurrent lethargy and depression was found to have pleural and peritoneal eosinophilic effusions, peripheral eosinophilia, eosinophilic lymphadenitis and a massively enlarged mesenteric lymph node. Visceral mast cell neoplasia was diagnosed after histopathological examination of a biopsy of the mass. Palliative chemotherapy was attempted unsuccessfully and the cat was euthanased.  相似文献

Observations of solar irradiance variability

High-precision measurements of total solar irradiance, made by the active cavity radiometer irradiance monitor on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite, show the irradiance to have been variable throughout the first 153 days of observations. The corrected data resolve orbit-to-orbit variations with uncertainties as small as 0.001 percent. Irradiance fluctuations are typical of a band-limited noise spectrum with high-frequency cutoff near 0.15 day(-1) their amplitudes about the mean value of 1368.31 watts per square meter approach +/- 0.05 percent. Two large decreases in irrradiance of up to 0.2 percent lasting about 1 week are highly correlated with the development of sunspot groups. The magnitude and time scale of the irradiance variability suggest that considerable energy storage occurs within the convection zone in solar active regions.  相似文献

Development of an Increased Signal Intensity in Fat-Suppressed Images into a Navicular Cyst of an 11-Year-Old Warmblood Horse Evidenced by Six Follow-Up Standing Low-Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging Examinations Over 2 Years

This case report demonstrates the development and management of an osseous cyst-like lesion in the spongiosa of the navicular bone in a high-level show jumper with chronic intermittent forelimb lameness. The first evidence of navicular bone pathology was increased signal intensity on fat-suppressed images in the medulla of the right navicular bone, which progressed to a cystic lucency identified on radiographs at 24 months. The horse's progress was documented over a period of 2 years and 2 months, including lameness investigation, treatment, radiographs, and six follow-up standing low-field magnetic resonance imagings. At the last clinical recheck, the horse showed no signs of lameness and continued to compete in show jumping at an international level event.  相似文献
