It has been established that the plant leaves and other above‐ground parts are capable of absorbing chemicals and nutrients. However, there is great paucity of information regarding the mechanisms of ion uptake by leaves and their transport to other parts. Equally not well understood is the phenomenon of retranslocation of elements from one leaf to another during the different stages of plant growth. The results of investigations carried out in this area of foliar uptake and translocation in the last few years are described. In this review, the importance of future studies to investigate the mechanisms involved in foliar transport, the influence of plant growth substances, and the effectiveness of timely supply of specific nutrients during the grain development stage, is stressed.  相似文献

The effects of Zn‐stress on pH of the nutrient medium and the occurrence of Zn deficiency symptoms were examined in 12 cotton and 10 peanut cultivars widely grown in several parts of India. It was found that many of the cotton cultivars were able to reduce the pH, but however unable to recover from Zn deficiency. In contrast, all the peanut cultivars tested did not develop Zn‐chlorosis when subjected to Zn‐stress, although the pH reduction was less significant. The study with these crop cultivars revealed that Zn‐stress tolerance response was not related to pH changes in general. The mechanism by which the peanut cultivars made Zn available and thus averted the onset of Zn‐chlorosis was therefore not adaptive to the changes in pH. This feature appeared to be different from the pattern of correlative pH reduction and recovery from Fe‐chlorosis observed in several Fe‐stress tolerant crop cultivars.  相似文献

Zinc deficiency was induced in two sorghum hybrids and their parent cultivars by growing them in complete nutrient medium for 30 days and then transferring to minus zinc medium at pH 6.4. The onset of Zn chlorosis and recovery as well as the change in the pH of the nutrient medium under Zn‐stress conditions were recorded. It was found that chlorotic symptoms due to Zn deficiency appeared after 2 days of stress and persisted for a long period in the cultivars, 36‐A and 168, while the hybrid CSH‐7 (36‐A X 168) recovered from chlorosis after 12 days. The hybrid CSH‐8 (36‐A X PD‐3) was chlorotic after 2 days, but recovered after 15 days.

A significant hybrid vigor was observed for Zn‐stress tolerance in the hybrid CSH‐7 and CSH‐8.  相似文献

Zinc absorption and transport patterns were examined in sorghum and maize hybrids and their parent cultivars with a view to observe, if any, and relate the differences amongst them meaningfully to traits like hybrid vigor. Short term uptake by excised roots or intact seedlings, from different concentrations of ZnCl2 or ZnEDDHA and also, time course from 50 μM ZnCl2, were measured. The results showed significant differences in the Zn absorption patterns by excised roots of sorghum cultivars. The rate of Zn transport to shoot in CSH‐8 was found to be higher than in others. The amount of Zn transported from ZnEDDHA was also more than that from ZnCl2 in all sorghum cultivars. Furthermore, significant hybrid vigor was observed in Zn transport from ZnEDDHA for the two hybrids CSH‐7 and CSH‐8. The resemblance of absorption and transport patterns of Zn in CSH‐8 to those of 36‐A strongly suggests that the trait is inherited from the female parent.

No heterosis was observed in the absorption and transport of Zn in maize hybrids. However, a linear and an exponential isotherms for Zn transport in Ganga‐5 and Ganga‐2 hybrids indicates some hybrid vigor.  相似文献

Infection with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), particularly Haemonchus contortus, is the biggest constraint to profitable goat production in the United States (US). Due to widespread prevalence of anthelmintic resistance in goat GIN, alternative, non-chemical control methodologies are needed to increase profitability of small ruminant industries. A study was designed to test the efficacy of a high condensed tannin (CT) legume, sericea lespedeza [SL, Lespedeza cuneata (Dum.-Cours. G. Don)] against GIN of goats fed in confinement. The goats were given a trickle infection of 500 H. contortus larvae/animal three times per week during the trial to simulate natural infection. Twenty Boer bucks (6-8 months old) were fed bermudagrass [BG, Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] hay plus concentrate for 5 weeks in confinement and then 10 animals were switched to SL hay for an additional 7 weeks. Throughout the trial, feces and blood were collected weekly from individual animals to determine fecal egg count (FEC) and blood packed cell volume (PCV). Fecal cultures were made weekly from pooled samples to determine treatment effects on GIN larval development. All goats were slaughtered at the end of the trial, with adult worms in the abomasum and small intestine of each goat recovered, counted, and identified to species. Feeding SL hay to goats significantly (P<0.01) reduced FEC and increased PCV compared with BG hay. In addition, a lower percentage of ova in feces from SL-fed goats developed into infective (L3) larvae. There was a direct effect of SL hay on adult worms, with significantly (P<0.01) lower numbers of both abomasal (H. contortus, Teladorsagia circumcincta) and small intestinal (Trichostrongylus colubriformis) nematodes compared with goats fed BG hay. Feeding SL hay to goats is an effective means of controlling parasitic nematodes and may be a potential supplement/replacement for chemical anthelmintics.  相似文献

Salannobutyrolactone and its deacetylderivative were tested for insect antifeedant and growth regulatory activities against the tobacco cutworm, Spodoptera litura. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of preslaughter isolation and feed withdrawal duration on physiological responses and shrinkage in goats. A total of 84 Spanish does (36 mo of age, average weight 35 kg) were individually weighed and scored for excitability before two replicate (day) trials. The does were feed-deprived (FD) or fed (F) in holding pens (treatment, TRT) for either 0, 7, 14, or 21 h (TIME). At the end of the holding periods, FD and F does were blood-sampled (n = 6 does/treatment/time/replicate) and weighed again to assess physiological responses and shrinkage, respectively. Individual does from each pen were blood-sampled again after imposing one of three handling post-treatments: a 15-min isolation with no visual contact with other does (I); a 15-min isolation with visual contact (IV); or no isolation (C, control). Plasma cortisol concentrations were higher at 0 h than at other holding time periods (P < 0.01). Plasma triiodothyronine, thyroxine, and leptin concentrations, and differential leukocyte counts were not influenced by any of the factors. The rate of decline in glucose concentrations over TIME was greater in FD than in F group (TRT x TIME, P < 0.05). The overall plasma creatine kinase activity peaked at 7 h before reaching a lower level at 14- and 21-h holding (P < 0.05). Plasma urea nitrogen concentrations were higher at 0- and 21-h than at 7- and 14-h holding (P < 0.01). Plasma nonesterified FA concentrations in the FD group remained at an elevated level during holding, but in the F group the levels decreased at 7 h and remained at that level (TRT x TIME, P < 0.01). Excitability scores did not have any effect on the variables measured. Shrinkage increased with longer holding time, but more prominently in the FD group (TRT x TIME, P < 0.01). Plasma cortisol concentrations were greater in I and IV groups than in the C group (P < 0.01). The novelty of environment during preslaughter holding, and social isolation may be more potent stressors than feed deprivation in goats, although shrinkage may increase with increasing feed-withdrawal times.  相似文献

Sixteen crossbred buck goats (Kiko x Spanish; BW = 32.8 kg) and wether sheep (Dorset x Suffolk; BW = 39.9 kg) were used to determine the effect of preslaughter diet and feed deprivation time (FDT) on physiological responses and microbial loads on skin and carcasses. Experimental animals were fed either a concentrate (CD) or a hay diet (HD) for 4 d and then deprived of feed for either 12-h or 24-h before slaughter. Blood samples were collected for plasma cortisol and blood metabolite analyses. Longisimus muscle (LM) pH was measured. Skin and carcass swabs were obtained to assess microbial loads. Plasma creatine kinase activity (863.9 and 571.7 ± 95.21 IU) and non-esterified fatty acid concentrations (1,056.1 and 589.8 ± 105.01 mEq/L) were different (P < 0.05) between sheep and goats. Species and diet treatments had significant effects on the ultimate pH of LM. Pre-holding total coliform (TCC) and aerobic plate counts (APC) of skin were significantly different between species. Goats had lower (P < 0.05) TCC (2.1 vs. 3.0 log10 CFU/cm2) and APC (8.2 vs. 8.5 log10 CFU/cm2) counts in the skin compared to sheep. Preslaughter skin E. coli counts and TCC were different (P < 0.05) between species. Goats had lower (P < 0.05) counts of E. coli (2.2 vs. 2.9 log10 CFU/cm2) and TCC (2.3 vs. 3.0 log10 CFU/cm2) in the skin compared with those in sheep. Diet, species, and FDT had no effect (P > 0.05) on E. coli and TCC in carcass swab samples. The APC of carcass swab samples were only affected (P < 0.05) by the FDT. The results indicated that preslaughter dietary management had no significant changes on hormone and blood metabolite concentrations and sheep might be more prone for fecal contamination than goats in the holding pens at abattoir.  相似文献

Fourteen species of wild growing mushrooms and surface (0–10 cm) soils were collected near Lake Wdzydze in the northern part of Poland in 1996–1997 to understand the status of mercury pollution. Concentrations of mercury in mushrooms varied between 100±30 and 2400±1900 ng g-1 dry matter in caps and 60±1 and 1300±1500 ng g-1 dry matter in stalks. Concentrations of mercury in underlying soil were between 30±1 and 140±120 ng g-1 dry matter (between 36±18 and 63±100 ng g-1 depending on the soil type). Bioconcentration factors (BCF: concentrations in mushroom/concentrationin soil) of total mercury were between 2.3±1.1 and 90±110 for caps, and between 2.1±1.0 and 53±56 for stalks. Scaly tooth (Sarcodon imbricatum) contained the greatest concentrations of mercury in the flesh. However, there was no significant relationship (p >: 0.05) between mercury content in the fruiting bodies of this speciesto soil mercury concentrations. A significant (p < 0.01) positive relationship between mercury content in caps to underlying soil was noted for European cow bolete (Suillus bovinus), while a negative relationship between mercury content in caps and stalks to underlying soil was observed for Sandy knight-cap (Tricholomaflavovirens), Shaggy scale-head (Pholiota squaroso-adiposa),Gypsy mushroom (Rozites caperata) and Pine spike cap (Chroogomphus rutilus).  相似文献
