In humans, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is the method of choice for the diagnosis of stress fractures. In this paper, bilateral stress fracture of the lateral condyle of the third metacarpal bone in a French trotter is described. Results of the radiographic, MR imaging, and histologic examinations are presented, with a focus on the MR signal abnormalities found. Based on this patient, the potential use of MR imaging for the diagnosis of stress fractures in horses is discussed. 相似文献

The current epizootic of rabies in Europe has as its main host the fox. Oral vaccination of the fox population has proven to be particularly effective. It is clear that the major components for a successful vaccination programme are a potent and stable vaccine, and an effective baiting system; the latter should attract the target animal but no non-target species. Recently, vaccines of increased stability have been generated; amongst these is a vaccinia recombinant virus which expresses rabies virus glycoprotein. Fertility of hybrid tea roses is often reduced due to their interspecific origin but also to intensive inbreeding. New genotypes
used as pollen donors represent an economic risk for a breeding programme, as their influence on seed production is unknown.
In this study 11 cut rose genotypes were selected from a company database as high fertile or low fertile male parents, according
to the number of seeds per hybridisation. Pollen morphology and in vitro germination of the selected genotypes were characterised.
Pollen was either small (mean diameter <30 μm), shrunken, and irregular (abnormal), or large (mean diameter >30 μm), elliptical
and crossed by furrows (normal). High correlations were found between the number of seeds produced per hybridisation and the
pollen diameter (r = 0.94) or the percentage of normal pollen (r = 0.96). In order to evaluate the predictive power of the models, we conducted regression analyses and performed a validation
experiment on genotypes not present in the database and without background information on fertility. Pollen diameter and percentage
of normal pollen were characterised and fitted in the regression models for seed set predictions. Validation with an independent
dataset gave a good prediction for 83.3% of the data. This indicates that using either the mean pollen diameter or the percentage
of normal pollen resulted in effective fertility prediction. This tool could enhance the genetic variability in crossings
between hybrid tea roses, thus creating possibilities for less economically risky exploitation of new tetraploid genotypes

Phosphonic acid (phosphorous acid), H — PO(OH)2, the active breakdown product in plant tissues of the systemic anti-oomycete fungicide fosetyl-aluminium was investigated in order to assay the stability of the labelled compound. There is a strong and fast isotopic exchange in unbuffered aqueous solutions of 2H — PO(OH)2, and therefore 3H — PO(OH)2, so that Fenn and Coffey's experiments must be reinterpreted because these authors used a stock solution of pure labelled phosphonic acid. However, it is possible to use this last compound for biological experiments under the following conditions: (1) Keeping the dry sodium salt 3H — PO(ONa)2. 5H2O in small flasks (100 mg, 37 MBq each) in a vacuum desiccator for individual use without fractionation; (2) using the compound at neutral or slightly acidic pH. 相似文献

Veterinarians have recognised a nonpruritic skin disease in the Golden retriever breed characterised by excessive scaling of large, variably pigmented flakes of skin in otherwise healthy dogs. This prospective case series describes clinical, histopathological, ultrastructural and genetic features of this cornification defect in 17 affected dogs. The condition affects young dogs of either sex and is characterised by symmetrical, predominantly ventro-lateral scaling and hyperpigmentation of the trunk. Histopathological and ultrastructural changes of the stratum corneum are suggestive of delayed degradation of corneodesmosomes. A genetic aetiology is proposed and a single-trait autosomal recessive mode of inheritance discussed. 相似文献

Shigella, the leading cause of bacillary dysentery, uses a type III secretion system (TTSS) to inject proteins into human cells, leading to bacterial invasion and a vigorous inflammatory response. The bacterium is protected against the response by the O antigen of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on its surface. We show that bacteriophage-encoded glucosylation of Shigella O antigen, the basis of different serotypes, shortens the LPS molecule by around half. This enhances TTSS function without compromising the protective properties of the LPS. Thus, LPS glucosylation promotes bacterial invasion and evasion of innate immunity, which may have contributed to the emergence of serotype diversity in Shigella. 相似文献

The distribution of bisphenol F (4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl-methane, BPF) was studied in female Sprague-Dawley rats. Pregnant and nonpregnant animals were gavaged with a single dose of 7 or 100 mg/kg [3H]BPF and were kept for 96 h in metabolic cages. The excretion of BPF residues occurred mainly in urine (43-54% of the administered dose), which was found to contain at least six different metabolites, and to a lesser extent in feces (15-20% of the administered dose). Sulfatase treatment and subsequent high-performance liquid chromatography analyses suggest that the major urinary metabolite (more than 50% of the radioactivity present in urine) is a sulfate conjugate of BPF. At 96 h, BPF residues were detectable in all tissues examined with the largest amounts in the liver (0.5% of the dose). In pregnant rats dosed at day 17 of gestation, BPF residues were detected in the uterus, placenta, amniotic fluid, and fetuses (0.9-1.3% of the administered dose). Large amounts of radioactivity (8-10% of the dose) were still located in the digestive tract lumen at the end of the study. After administration of a single oral dose of [3H]BPF, 46% of the distributed radioactivity was excreted in bile over a 6 h period. In rats, BPF and/or its metabolites very likely undergo enterohepatic cycling, which could be responsible for the relatively high amounts of residues still excreted 4 days after BPF administration. This bisphenol is efficiently absorbed and distributed to the reproductive tract in female rats, and its residues pass the placental barrier at a late stage of gestation in rats. 相似文献

This study investigates the capacity of the antimitotic agents colchicine, oryzalin and trifluralin for inducing polyploidisation
of Ranunculus asiaticus ‘Alfa’ in vitro shoots. Flow cytometry was used to evaluate the optimal concentration of each antimitotic agent for polyploidisation.
Trifluralin at a concentration of 2 μM resulted in the highest percentage of polyploidisation (27.5%), followed by a colchicine
treatment of 200 μM, which induced 23.3% of polyploids. For oryzalin the highest percentage was achieved using a concentration
of 1 μM. Different exposure periods were tested and turned out to be an important factor. The maximal exposure period tested
(10 weeks) resulted in a significant increase in polyploidisation by oryzalin and trifluralin. In contrast, for colchicine
(100 μM) exposure times of either 16 or 24 h did not significantly influence polyploidisation. Additionally the effect of
the antimitotic agents on the viability was analysed. For colchicine no significant effect on the survival rate was observed,
for trifluralin only a concentration of 10 μM affected viability whereas for oryzalin, concentration as well as exposure period
were significant parameters. Flow cytometric data were confirmed by counting chromosomes in root tip cells. 相似文献
