Amyloid protein was isolated from the cerebral meninges of 4 aged dogs with cerebral amyloid angiopathy. By immunoblot analysis, antiserum against synthetic oligo-peptide consisting of 1-28 amino acid of amyloid beta protein recognized prominent wide band ranging from 14 to 18 kilodalton (kd). When amyloid samples were solubilized by formic acid, the antiserum recognized lower molecular weight band ranging from 3 to 4 kd. Immunohistochemical studies on cerebral amyloid angiopathy and senile plaques were performed in 17 aged dogs. Anti-amyloid beta protein serum labeled amyloid deposits in cerebral vessel walls and senile plaques. Compact deposits of beta protein were detected in primitive or classical plaques. After using formic acid pretreatment, diffuse deposits of beta protein in the neuropil representing diffuse plaques were detectable. Classical and primitive plaques reacted with antiserum against glial fibrillary acidic protein, while not with antisera against alpha 1-antichymotrypsin, IgG and IgM. In aquatic environments, viruses play an important role in the microbial food web through microbial mortality from viral lysis. Bacteriophages (phages) compose the majority of viral communities in the floodwater of paddy fields. The present study evaluated bacterial mortality from phage lysis in the floodwater of a Japanese paddy field based on the frequency of phage-infected bacterial cells by transmission electron microscopy. Floodwater was sampled five times during the rice cultivation period from two plots of NPK plus lime (no-compost plot) and NPK plus lime and compost (compost plot) under a long-term and ongoing fertilizer trial that began in 1925. The frequency of visibly infected cells in the compost plot was larger, ranging from 2.4 to 3.6% (average 3.0%), than that in the no-compost plot, which ranged from 1.6 to 2.9% (average 2.0%). The fractions of bacterial mortality from phage lysis in the floodwater samples were estimated to range from 12.8 to 27.3% (average 17.2%) and from 21.7 to 35.0% (average 27.9%) for the samples collected from the no-compost plot and the compost plot, respectively. This is the first study to estimate bacterial mortality from phage lysis in the paddy field ecosystem, and the frequency of phage lysis in floodwater was found to be within the frequency ranges observed in other aquatic environments. 相似文献

Poly(butylene terephthalate) sheets were prepared by roller-drawing method with various draw ratio. The drawing temperature
is 100 °C and draw ratios were varied 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4. The effect of draw ratio on the crystal structure, the molecular
orientation, dynamic viscoelastic properties, sonic modulus and tensile properties of the roller-drawn PBT sheets were investigated.
In WAXD results, with increasing of the draw ratio, (010) and (100) planes of preferred orientation have the strongest intensity
on the equator. In the meridional scans, it was confirmed that α and β crystal co-existed in the roller drawn PBT sheets with
various draw ratio. Uniaxially roller-drawn PBT sheets clearly increased orientation along the stretched direction at high
draw ratio. And the four-methylene groups of PBT orient along the surface of the sheet. The mechanical properties of PBT sheets

Large quantities of cotton gin byproducts (CGB), also known as cotton gin trash or cotton gin waste, are being produced across the cotton belt of the United States annually. Similarly, guayule wastes after rubber latex production is expected to increase as this industry begins to expand. Use of these waste materials in value-added products can help the economics of the crops and aid in alleviating waste management issues and environmental problems. Conventional wood preservatives used to protect wood from insect and microbial damage are of concern to human health and the environment. Guayule bagasse (GB) has been shown to have termite control properties, and a combination of cotton gin and guayule wastes could also have such valuable properties. An initial study evaluating the physical and mechanical properties of boards produced from these two biomasses was published in 2009, this study is a continuation focusing on the termite resistance of boards produced. Thus, the objective of this research was to determine the termite resistance property of experimental composition boards made from CGB and GB. Composition boards were made from five different ratios of CGB to GB: 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100 (C100, C75-G25, C50-G50, C25-G75, and G100, respectively). Additionally, three-layered boards (3-layer) consisting of 25% GB (upper layer), 50% CGB (middle layer), and 25% GB (bottom layer) were made. For comparison, a commercial southern pine lumber board (SPB), a commercial oriented strandboard (OSB), and a commercial preservative treated medium density fiberboard (MDF) were included in the testing. This testing was an extension of a previous study where the mechanical properties of the CGB and GB composition boards were compared to select commercial standards. Five specimens were cut from each of the nine different board treatments and tested using Eastern subterranean termites. Weight loss, termite survival days, and visual grade of each specimen were determined according to testing standards. Results confirmed good termite control quality for boards made from GB alone. Boards containing CGB to GB ratios of 75-25 and 50-50 obtained similar termite resistance as the commercial OSB based on the total weight loss and one-week termite mortality rate. Visual grading of tested specimens revealed all six CGB and GB composition boards and the treated MDF showed better rating than the commercial OSB and pine lumber. No differences were noted among the total termite surviving days for the six CGB and GB composition boards. Overall, the biobased CGB and GB boards showed promise with the boards containing GB exhibiting improved termite resistance properties than SPB and OSB. 相似文献

To evaluate the nursery value of the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) for the anadromous engraulid fish Coilia nasus, physical and biological samples were collected along the macrotidal Chikugo River estuary, southwestern Japan, from June 2005 to January 2006. Generally, eggs were distributed upstream of the ETM, whereas larvae were distributed in the ETM. The first cohort was washed out of the estuary by a large flood in early July. The second cohort appeared after the flood, gradually extending its distributional area through the estuary and growing to 100 mm in standard length (SL) by December. Larvae and juveniles (20–100 mm SL) fed selectively on copepods, specifically large calanoid species, whereas more developed juveniles fed on mysids. Prey organisms in guts were significantly more abundant and present in greater weights in the ETM (salinity <10) than in the lower estuary (salinity >10). The better feeding conditions were primarily attributable to consistently high densities of two large calanoid species, Sinocalanus sinensis and Pseudodiaptomus inopinus, in the ETM. In contrast, the poor feeding conditions in the lower estuary were likely due to a seasonal decrease in copepod density and the dominance of small copepods such as Oithona spp. Given that better feeding conditions contribute positively to the growth and survival of larvae and juveniles, we conclude that the ETM has a significantly higher nursery value for C. nasus compared with other habitats in the Chikugo River estuary. 相似文献

A 10-year-old American Shorthair cat with nasal discharge, anorexia, and weight loss was found to have pancytopenia and hyperproteinaemia. Bone marrow aspiration revealed atypical plasma cells that totalled 50% of the nucleated bone marrow cells. The number of atypical plasma cells progressively increased in the peripheral blood during the observation period of 64 days. The cat did not respond to treatments with melphalan, chlorambucil, and prednisolone, and died 71 days after the initial presentation. Clinical, cytological, histopathological, and immunohistochemical findings in this case supported the diagnosis of myeloma-related disorder (MRD) with leukaemic progression. 相似文献
