Exhaled breath condensate hydrogen peroxide and pH for the assessment of lower airway inflammation in the horse

Measurement of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) concentration and pH in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is useful for detection and monitoring of asthma in humans. In contrast, limited information on the use of these parameters for the investigation of lower airway inflammation (LAI) is available for horses. Aims of the current study were to investigate the intra- and inter-day variations of EBC H₂O₂ concentration and pH in horses and establish any relationship(s) with LAI. Both intra- and inter-day variability of EBC H₂O₂ concentration were large, while those of pH were small. No significant difference in the intra-day or inter-day H₂O₂ concentrations or pH measurements were found in control or LAI horses, except for inter-day H₂O₂ concentration in horses with LAI (p = 0.019). There was no significant difference in EBC pH or H₂O₂ concentration between control and LAI horses, however a trend for a reduced pH in horses with LAI was observed.  相似文献

In grasslands, saprotrophic fungi, including basidiomycetes, are major decomposers of dead organic matter, although spatial distributions of their mycelial assemblages are little described. The aim of this study was to characterise the scale and distribution of saprotrophic fungal communities in a coastal grassland soil using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP).Soil fungi were sampled at Point Reyes, California, USA, by taking forty-five 26 mm diam. cores in a spatially defined manner. Within each sampled core, complete core sections at 1-2 cm and 14-15 cm depths were removed and sub-sampled for DNA extraction and amplification using the primer pairs ITS1F-FAM/ITS4 (general fungi) or ITS1F-FAM/ITS4B (basidiomycete-specific).Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling showed that general fungal communities could be clearly separated by depth, although basidiomycete communities could not. There were no strong patterns of community similarity or dissimilarity for general or basidiomycete fungal communities at horizontal geographical distances from 25 cm to 96 m in the upper horizon. These results show considerable vertical, but little horizontal, variability in fungal community structure in a semi-natural grassland at the spatial scales measured here.  相似文献

Acute phase protein levels in dogs with mast cell tumours and sarcomas

The acute phase proteins (APP) form part of a non-specific host response to inflammation. They may be induced by a range of different causes, including infection, inflammation, cancer and trauma. As they form part of the earliest response to such insults, they have potential for early identification of disease. In people, APP levels have been shown to correlate both with the extent of disease and also the prognosis in several forms of neoplasia, including prostate, oesophageal and colorectal cancer. As such, they can be used as prognostic and monitoring tools. To date, similar studies in veterinary patients have been limited, largely retrospective in nature and many are non-specific for tumour type. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a panel of four APPs in dogs with naturally occurring mast cell tumours (MCTs) and sarcomas to identify in the first instance whether increased levels of individual APPs, or identifiable combinations of APPs, was linked with the presence of disease. In the patients with MCTs, C-reactive protein (CRP) and α-1 acid glycoprotein levels increased, with a concurrent drop in serum amyloid A levels. In the sarcoma patients, CRP, α-1 acid glycoprotein and haptoglobin were increased. These findings suggest that specific solid tumour types in dogs may be associated with specific changes in APP profiles.  相似文献

The costs of death in a model 100-doe commerical rabbit unit were calculated on the basis of two levels of breeding (7.5 and 10.0 litters per doe per year) and two levels of feeding, (ad lib and controlled). Although the cost of individual deaths from stillbirth and other perinatal and neonatal deaths was half or two-thirds the cost of an individual death later in the rabbit's life, the total cost of these early deaths was three times the total cost of the later deaths. Early death thus plays a major part in the profitability of a commercial rabbitry.  相似文献
