Post-exercise carbohydrate supplementation has been routinely used to enhance glycogen concentrations in skeletal muscle, particularly during multiple-day athletic events. Consumption of protein hydrolysates mixed with carbohydrate supplements during the post-exercise period may increase insulin response and cause glycogen repletion in skeletal muscle. A group of Alaskan sled dogs were selected to examine post-exercise supplementation in a paired crossover study design. The dogs were subjected to the same exercise regimen and provided one of three treatments-water, glucose polymers, or glucose polymers with protein hydrolysates-over a 2-month period. Parameters tested at various post-exercise time points included plasma insulin, glucagon and glucose concentrations, and skeletal muscle glycogen content to gain a better understanding of glucose metabolism and glycogen repletion. The results showed an enhanced insulin, glucose, and glucagon response immediately after supplementation and significantly increased glycogen concentrations in skeletal muscle within 24 hours when dogs received either of the glucose-containing supplements compared with water alone. There were no differences in the plasma parameters or skeletal muscle glycogen stores in dogs provided the glucose polymers alone or the glucose polymers plus protein hydrolysates. Thus, post-exercise carbohydrate supplementation increased muscle glycogen repletion, but inclusion of protein hydrolysates in the supplements provided no additional benefits.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine mortality rates and causes of death for thin (i.e., lean or emaciated) cats and, if mortality rates were high, to determine factors associated with risk that cats would be thin. DESIGN: Cohort study. ANIMALS: 1,138 cats examined at 27 private veterinary practices in the northeastern United States. PROCEDURE: Body condition of the cats was scored (emaciated, lean, optimally lean, optimal, heavy, obese) between 1991 and 1992. Follow-up information on whether cats had developed any illnesses, whether cats had died, and, if cats had died, cause of death was obtained between 1994 and 1996. Mortality risk for emaciated cats was estimated, using cats in optimal condition as the reference group. RESULTS: Survival curves for emaciated cats were significantly lower than those for cats of other body conditions. Compared with cats in optimal condition, emaciated cats were 4.4 times as likely to die during the follow-up period. However, after adjusting for age and excluding cats that died within 1 year after body condition was scored, emaciated cats were no longer significantly more likely to die. Emaciated cats were more likely to die of an unknown cause than were cats of optimal condition. Risk factors for emaciated body condition included preexisting illness, age, and Siamese breed. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that emaciated cats had a significantly higher risk of death, compared with cats in optimal body condition. Serious illness and advancing age accounted for much, and perhaps all, of this increased risk of death.  相似文献

The antimicrobial enrofloxacin (Baytril®, Bayer) was evaluated under field conditions in the winter months for treatment of clinical Aeromonas salmonicida infections in salmonids by feeding medicated diets. Two trials in which lake trout Salvelinus namaycush were treated with enrofloxacin at 10mg/kg per d for 10d resulted in reduced mortalities when compared to non-medicated controls. A third trial in which Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were treated required 20d for the fish to consume the 10d medicated ration, due to poor feeding. This resulted in an effective dose of 5mg/kg per d for 20d. In spite of the lower feeding activity, a reduction in mortalities in medicated fish was observed. Tissue concentrations of drug were in excess of minimum inhibitory concentrations of the drug for the A. salmonicida isolates tested.  相似文献

The frequency of diagnosis of feline hyperthyroidism has increased dramatically since the late 1970s. Whether this increase reflects enhanced diagnostic acumen or an actual increase in the incidence of this disease, or both, is unknown. It seems likely, in view of the distinctive nature of the signs and the lack of evidence of thyroid enlargement and clinical signs in previous feline necropsy series, that feline hyperthyroidism is truly occurring with increased frequency today.

A case-control study was undertaken to identify possible risk factors for this disease. Owners of 56 cats with feline hyperthyroidism and 117 controls were questioned about their cats' exposure to various potential risk factors (e.g., diet, medications) and these exposures were compared. Elevated odds ratios were associated with regular treatment with flea sprays or powders, living strictly indoors and having reported exposure to lawn herbicides, fertilizers or pesticides. Cases were also more likely to receive canned food and were less likely to be Siamese than controls. The relevance of these factors to the etiology of feline hyperthyroidism is discussed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether sensitivity of detecting an anomalous portosystemic blood vessel during operative mesenteric portography varied with patient positioning. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 34 dogs with a portosystemic shunt diagnosed via scintigraphy or surgery. PROCEDURE: Portograms were evaluated for a portosystemic blood vessel. Sensitivity was calculated from results obtained with dogs in left lateral, right lateral, and dorsal recumbency and from results obtained with dogs in 2 or 3 positions. Differences in sensitivity among positions and between 2 examiners were evaluated. RESULTS: Sensitivity was 85, 91, and 100% in dorsal, right lateral, and left lateral recumbency, respectively. Sensitivity was lower in dorsal recumbency than in left lateral recumbency, although differences were not significant. There was no significant difference between sensitivity of results obtained in dorsal and right lateral recumbency or right lateral and left lateral recumbency. Sensitivity for combined right lateral and dorsal positions was 97%, which was better than that in dorsal recumbency alone, although the difference was not significant. Because sensitivity in left lateral recumbency was 100%, there was no need to evaluate the improvement obtained by combining the result of this position with the results of other positions. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results of mesenteric portography varied with patient positioning. The optimal position varied among patients but left lateral recumbency may be better and dorsal recumbency worse. Sensitivity may be improved by performing the test with the patient in orthogonal recumbent positions.  相似文献
