Killer whales were used to evaluate peripartum changes and interactions between body temperature and circulating progesterone concentration. Daily body temperature was measured between 0800 h and 0830 h before activity. Body temperature clearly increased during the first phase of pregnancy, and this was followed by a gradual decline until full term. The initial increase was paralleled by circulating levels of progesterone. A decrease in body temperature was first detected on day 5 (p < 0.01) before parturition, and body temperature decreased significantly every 2 days until delivery. Five days before delivery, body temperature was 0.3 C lower than the mean value during the pregnancy period, and the decrease was more marked on day 1 before delivery (0.8 C). Serum progesterone levels during pregnancy showed a general pattern of initial rapid elevation (increasing phase), followed by a gradual decline (decreasing phase) throughout the remainder of pregnancy. However, statistically significant correlations between body temperature and progesterone pattern were only found only during the increasing phase. These results suggest that monitoring body temperature variation can be considered valuable for predicting impending parturition in killer whales.  相似文献

The uptake and metabolism of DDT, fenitrothion and chlorpyrifos were studied in cultures of the ciliate protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis. When cultures were treated with DDT in concentrations varying from 0.01 to 0.5 μg ml−1, concentrations found in T. pyriformis were 3.8 to 335 μg g−1 dry weight. The accumulation of fenitrothion ranged from 28.7 μg g−1 in cultures treated with 1 μg ml−1 to 2260 μg g−1 in cultures treated with 10 μg ml−1. Under similar experimental conditions chlorpyrifos was accumulated from 24.7 to 15400 μg g−1. The patterns of uptake were dependent on the growth cycle, the ability of the organism to metabolise insecticide and the type of the insecticide used. Maximum accumulation of DDT, fenitrothion and chlorpyrifos occurred in 2, 4 and 6 h respectively. Tetrahymena metabolised DDT to DDD and DDE but failed to metabolise fenitrothion and chlorpyrifos. The effects on growth and morphology of T. pyriformis were studied over a period of 5 days. Higher concentrations (10, 50 and 100 μg ml−1) of DDT inhibited only the growth of the organisms and did not change cell morphology. Fenitrothion was extremely toxic to the organisms and at 5 and 10 μg ml−1 cells became more or less spherical and died after 48 h. However, concentrations of 0.5, 1 and 2.5 μg ml−1 fenitrothion caused growth inhibition, but only at 2.5 μg ml−1 was this permanent. Chlorpyrifos inhibited the growth of the organisms at 1, 5 and 10 μg ml−1 but the morphology was affected only at 5 and 10 μg ml−1.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the arsenic toxicity, its accumulation and phytoremediation potential of bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) grown in soils contaminated with different species of arsenic such as arsenite (As(III)), arsenate (As(V)) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA). Bean plants were grown in soils amended by aqueous solutions of 20 and 50 mg kg?1 of As (III), As(V) or DMA. Arsenic species negatively affected the yield and growth of the plant. The study demonstrated arsenic accumulation in the plant parts. The concentration of arsenic compounds in the shoots decreased in the order arsenate > arsenite > dimethylarsinic acid while in the roots as arsenite > arsenate > dimethylarsinic acid. Most arsenic is accumulated in the roots with limited transfer to shoots. Thus, bean plants can be considered as an arsenic excluder and has the potential for phytostabilization of arsenic contaminated sites. The study also reveals that removal of arsenic by boiling the vegetables with excess of water is not possible.  相似文献

The estrogenic efficacy of topical vaginal application of Pueraria mirifica extract (PM) on the restoration of vaginal atrophy, and the presence of any systemic side effects, were investigated in postmenopausal cynomolgus macaques. Twelve postmenopausal cynomolgus macaques, with complete cessation of menstruation for at least 5 years before start of this experiment, were divided into three groups. They received a topical vaginal application daily of 0.1 or 1% (w/w) PM cream or a conjugated equine estrogen (CEE) cream (a mixture of estrone, equilin, 17β-dihydroequilin, 17α-estradiol and 17α-dihydroequilin at 0.625 mg total estrogen/g cream) for 28 days. Estrogenic efficacy was assessed weekly by vaginal cytology assay and vaginal pH measurement, whilst the plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) and sex skin coloration levels were determined at the end of each treatment period to evaluate the systemic side effects. PM significantly increased the proportion of superficial cells in a dose-dependent manner, with a similar efficacy between 1% (w/w) PM and CEE. Together with increased vaginal maturation, PM decreased the vaginal pH to acidic levels, as observed in the CEE group. PM induced no detected systemic side effects, whilst CEE decreased the plasma LH level and increased the reddish color of the sex skin during the posttreatment period. Topical vaginal treatment with PM stimulated the maturation of the vaginal epithelium without causing systemic side effects in postmenopausal monkeys. The implication is that PM could be a safer alternative to treat vaginal atrophy in postmenopausal women.  相似文献

Determinations of digestibility of dry matter (DM), digestible energy (DE), and metabolizable energy (ME) in cassava chips with different levels of crude fiber (CF) were measured in growing pigs (20 kg) and finishing pigs (60 kg). The treatments were (1) cassava starch (0% CF), (2) peeled cassava chips (2.5% CF), (3) non-peeled washed cassava chips (3.9% CF), and (4) non-peeled and non-washed cassava chips (5.2% CF). In the growing pigs, peeled cassava chips, non-peeled washed cassava chips, and non-peeled and non-washed cassava chips had DM digestibility of 87.51%, 78.63%, and 73.89%, respectively. Their DE was 3.69, 3.49, and 3.32 Mcal/kg DM, respectively (DE of cassava starch is 3.90 Mcal/kg DM). ME was 3.54, 3.35, and 3.19 Mcal/kg DM, respectively (ME of cassava starch is 3.74 Mcal/kg DM). On the other hand, in the finishing pigs, the digestibility of DM was 89.13%, 80.63%, and 76.13%, respectively. Their DE was 3.72, 3.53, and 3.43 Mcal/kg DM, respectively (DE of cassava starch is 3.91 Mcal/kg DM). ME was 3.57, 3.38, and 3.29 Mcal/kg DM, respectively (ME of cassava starch is 3.75 Mcal/kg DM). These values increased with decreasing CF content, and the peeled cassava chips had the highest values (P < 0.01). These suggest that the digestibility values of DM, DE, and ME of cassava chips is inversely related to the CF content in cassava chips. It is recommended that cassava chips be peeled for better nutrition for growing and finishing pigs.  相似文献

Glutamate is the dominant excitatory neurotransmitter in a large number of physiological processes including neuroendocrine regulation. Some pharmacological studies have shown that different subtypes of glutamate receptor, such as the N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) and alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methy-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptors, are involved in stress-induced adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and prolactin secretion. However, the roles of the respective glutamate receptors and the mechanism of ACTH and prolactin secretion during stress via these receptors have not been investigated in detail. In the present study, we evaluated the role of AMPA-type glutamate receptor in ACTH and prolactin regulation under restraint stress in adult male rats. Male rats pretreated with a selective AMPA receptor antagonist, 2, 3-dihydroxy-6-nitro-7-sulfamoyl-benzo(f)quinoxaline (NBQX; 50 microg), through a lateral ventricle cannula were stressed by immobilization. Administration of NBQX inhibited ACTH and prolactin secretion in response to restraint stress. However, NBQX had no significant effects on the activity of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme in dopamine biosynthesis, as measured by the accumulation of 3, 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA). In addition, administration of NBQX suppressed stress-induced prolactin secretion in the male rats pretreated with alpha-MT, an inhibitor of dopamine synthesis, and infused with dopamine solution (2.5 microg/200 microl/10 min). These results indicated that the effects of NBQX on prolactin secretion might be mediated by non-dopamine mechanisms. The contents of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) in the median eminence (ME) of the male rats decreased during restraint stress; however, the fluctuations in CRH and AVP were eliminated by NBQX administration. These results suggest that stress-induced ACTH and prolactin release mediated by neurotransmission via AMPA receptors might be partly attributable to hypophysiotropic regulatory factors in the hypothalamus.  相似文献

Peel yellowing is a major postharvest problem of lime fruit. Research was conducted to control peel yellowing by UV-B irradiation. Mature green lime fruit were irradiated with UV-B doses at 0 (control), 8.8, and 13.2 kJ m?2 and then stored at 25 °C in darkness. UV-B treatment at 8.8 kJ m?2 efficiently delayed the decrease of chlorophyll content. A high level of chlorophyllide a accumulated in mature green fruit and then gradually decreased with the progress of peel yellowing. The chlorophyllide a level was higher in 8.8 kJ m?2 UV-B-treated fruit than it was in the controls. The pheophorbide a level declined in lime fruit treated with 8.8 kJ m?2 UV-B, especially during the development of yellowing. In addition, the pheophytin a level increased by 8.8 kJ m?2 UV-B treatment at the late period of storage. We concluded that UV-B treatment effectively suppressed chlorophyll degradation in mature green lime during storage, which suggests that UV-B irradiation is a usable method for prolonging the postharvest life of lime fruit.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of liquid brewer's yeast (LBY) addition on chemical composition and fermentation quality of mixture of LBY and cassava pulp (CVP) with rice straw (RS) in different ratios during preservation periods. Four mixtures of LBY, CVP and RS were made, that is mixture ratio of LBY : CVP : RS of 0% LBY, 20% LBY, 35% LBY and 50% LBY were 0:70:30, 20:50:30, 35:35:30 and 50:20:30 as fresh matter, respectively. The bags were opened at weeks 0, 1, 2, 4 and 8 after storage. The contents of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber ranged 36.4‐40.0, 88.9‐90.8, 4.0‐12.0, 1.1‐1.3, 58.8‐61.6 and 37.6‐40.0, respectively, and the contents of CP and EE increased and the other components decreased in proportion to LBY inclusion (P < 0.01). 50% LBY had the highest (P < 0.05) pH (4.81) and ammonia nitrogen per total nitrogen (NH3‐N/TN) (7.40%) and the lowest V‐score (90.3). Propionic and butyric acid contents were 0.01% or lower in each mixture and storage period. There were rapid pH decrease and NH3‐N/TN increase during the first week of the storage period. The increases of NH3‐N/TN and acetic acid content and decreases of pH, lactic acid content and V‐score during the preservation were more drastic as LBY inclusion increased. Although higher proportion of LBY produced higher CP and lower fiber contents in the mixture, attention should be paid for the reduction of fermentation quality during longer storage periods.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the effects of mixtures of liquid brewer’s yeast (LBY) and cassava pulp (CVP) with rice straw (RS) on feed intake, digestibility, rumen fermentation, and growth of dairy heifers. Sixteen Holstein crossbred heifers (13.8?±?1.6 months old, 210?±?23 kg body weight (BW)) were randomly allocated to four feeding treatments with four replications, which were 0:0:100 (RS), 0:70:30 (0%LBY), 20:50:30 (20%LBY), and 50:20:30 (50%LBY), respectively, for LBY/CVP/RS on a fresh matter basis. The heifers were offered conventional concentrate at 1.5% initial body weight daily and fed the treatment diets ad libitum. Average daily gain and feed intake were not significantly different among the treatments. The heifers fed 50%LBY had the highest crude protein (CP) intake and DM, OM, and CP digestibility (P?<?0.05). The ruminal pH did not differ significantly among treatments, while NH3-N was the highest (P?<?0.05) in 50%LBY. Total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations and the molar proportion of each VFA were not significantly different among the treatments. Blood urea nitrogen concentrations of 50%LBY were the highest among the treatments (P?<?0.05). The results indicated that 50%LBY improved CP digestibility.  相似文献
