Effect of pore water pressure on tensile strength Direct tensile testing with measurements of the pore water suction was used to investigate the relationship between tensile strength and suction. The tests were conducted on a till and a clayey soil, both homogenized. A closer view is focused on the relationship between material strain and the development of suction. Beyond, the factor χ of the effective stress equation for unsaturated soils by Bishop (1959), which was calculated by the data of tensile strength and corresponding matric suction is compared to the volumetric χ of the tested soil specimens. It could be shown, that the pore water pressure changes with strain. Therefore, not the initial suction of a soil is relevant for its failure but the actual one that can be measured in the failure zone at the moment of fracture. In addition the application of the volumetric χ in the effective stress equation compared to the χ derived from tensile testing leads to an 1.6 to 2.8 fold overestimation of the contribution of matric suction to soil tensile strength. 相似文献
Calcium penetration from salt solutions of calcium chloride and calcium acetate was measured through isolated tomato fruit (Solanum lycopersicum L., cultivar ‘Panovy’) cuticles after 4, 24, and 48 h. Droplet spread area (volume = 1 μL) and the area ultimately covered with calcium were determined with a scanning electron microscope which has an integrated energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis system. An ethoxylated rapeseed oil surfactant (RSO 5) was used for inducing different degrees of droplet spread and together with different calcium concentrations of the solutions to vary the concentration gradient in the penetration experiments. As a rule, penetration of calcium from CaCl2 was higher than that of Ca(CH3COO)2. The addition of RSO 5 to salt solutions resulted in enhanced calcium penetration in comparison to unformulated solutions. However, extending penetration time from 4 to 48 h predominantly did not enhance the penetrated calcium amount significantly. Droplet spread area was enhanced up to 4-fold after adding RSO 5, whereas the area ultimately covered with calcium did not exceed twice as much. This resulted in lower percentage area covered by calcium in droplet footprints from formulated solutions in comparison to solutions without addition of RSO 5. Correlation analyses showed that penetration was not related to droplet spread area but significantly correlated with the area covered by calcium. These observations were true for unformulated calcium salts as well as for calcium solutions with addition of RSO 5. Therefore, the area ultimately covered with calcium or even other xenobiotics within a droplet footprint should be considered in developing mathematical models to simulate active ingredient (a.i.) penetration. 相似文献
Contrast paranasal sinusography was a simple procedure that enhanced evaluation of the paranasal sinuses in the standing horse. Two techniques of positive-contrast paranasal sinusography were developed using cadavers and sedated horses. For both techniques, 37% organically bound iodine was used. For the first technique, the conchofrontal sinus was injected with 30 ml of contrast medium followed by an additional 100 ml and 70 ml. For the second technique, the rostral maxillary sinus was injected with 20 ml followed by an additional 50 ml. Each technique enhanced visualization of different paranasal sinuses, and each was necessary for complete positive-contrast radiographic evaluation of the paranasal sinuses. Eighteen cycling, virgin, Holstein heifers daily were given 250 mg of 99% purified zearalenone in a gelatin capsule orally, and 18 controls were given an empty gelatin capsule once a day. The study lasted through 1 non-breeding estrous cycle and the next 2 consecutive estrous cycles during which the 36 heifers were bred, using artificial insemination. Serum concentrations of progesterone and complete blood cell counts were determined throughout the study. The treated and control heifers had conception rates of 62% and 87%, respectively. There was no effect (P less than 0.05) on the serum concentration of progesterone or the complete blood cell counts. Three heifers, bred but not pregnant by the end of the study, were euthanatized and necropsied. The treated heifer did not have any zearalenone-attributable lesions, and there was no effect seen in the bone marrow smears. The remaining 33 heifers were sold as a herd, and the 31 pregnant heifers calved normally. There was no effect (P less than 0.05) on the sex ratio of the offspring, which were all clinically healthy. Zearalenone did lower the conception rate of the treated heifers (P less than 0.065). 相似文献
Vanadium phosphates are important catalysts for the oxidation of alkanes, and commercial catalysts comprise a complex range of V4+ and V5+ phosphates. We used three complementary in situ characterization methodologies-powder x-ray diffraction and laser Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies-to show that the metastable phase omega-VOPO4 is very sensitive to many of the reactants and products of butane oxidation. A rapid transformation from omega-VOPO4 to delta-VOPO4 occurs on exposure to butane at the reaction temperature, and hence the metastable omega-VOPO4 may play a role in the formation of commercial catalysts. 相似文献
Sesquiterpene lactones are a major class of natural bitter compounds occurring in vegetables and culinary herbs as well as in aromatic and medicinal plants, where they often represent the main gustatory and pharmacologically active component. Investigations on sesquiterpene lactones have mainly focused on their bioactive potential rather than on their sensory properties. In the present study, we report about the stimulation of heterologously expressed human bitter taste receptors, hTAS2Rs, by the bitter sesquiterpene lactone herbolide D. A specific response to herbolide D was observed i.a. for hTAS2R46, a so far orphan bitter taste receptor without any known ligand. By further investigation of its agonist pattern, we characterized hTAS2R46 as a bitter receptor broadly tuned to sesquiterpene lactones and to clerodane and labdane diterpenoids as well as to the unrelated bitter substances strychnine and denatonium. 相似文献
In this study a specific taste modulating flavor ingredient, N-lactoylguanosine 5'-monophosphate (N-lactoyl GMP), was determined in bonito (Japanese, Katsuobushi, dried fermented skipjack) and in powdered bonito using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization (+) mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI(+)-MS/MS) with a methanol/ammonium acetate or formate gradient. Furthermore, the influence of ion suppression due to sample matrix effect was investigated and was found to substantially influence the total MS response of N-lactoyl GMP; by adjusting the LC conditions the response could be approximately 5-fold-enhanced. The N-lactoyl GMP concentrations in different types of bonito products were between 0.2 and 2.4 microg/g. 相似文献
Pollutants can be introduced to soil through the application of organic and inorganic fertilizers and pesticides and through atmospheric depositions. The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of long-term (9–17 years) tillage systems on the behavior of pollutants in soils. Bioavailability and enrichment of heavy metals, arsenic, and organics, i.e. polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) and a chlorinated phenol (2,4-DCP) were measured in a Eutric Cambisol and a Luvisol under conventional tillage (CT), reduced tillage (RT), and no-tillage (NT). Soil samples were collected from 0 to 3, 3 to 10, and 10 to 25 cm depths.
The upper layer of NT soils was enriched in pollutants, but concentrations decreased with increasing soil depth. Atmospheric deposition of pollutants and input via organic fertilizers was noticeable in soils under long-term NT. Total amount of zinc (59 mg kg−1) was significantly enriched in the 0–3 cm depth of the Luvisol under NT and this was attributed to higher sorption capacity for heavy metal input via liquid manure. In the Eutric Cambisol, NT resulted in significant increase of cadmium extracted by aqua regia in the arable layer of 0–25 cm. As a result of higher soil organic C, long-term accumulation of PCB’s in NT soils was more pronounced than in plowed soils. In plowed soils the mixing effect resulted in homogeneous distribution of pollutants within a soil depth of 0–25 cm.
The enrichment of organic C in RT and NT soils emphasizes the role of soils as a sink for pollutants, buffering the contaminants against leaching and transfer into crops. 相似文献
Surveys with a submersible at offshore islands and banks in southern California found that white abalone were most abundant at depths between 43 and 60 m. This is deeper than estimates taken when white abalone were more abundant. Densities were highest at sites far from fishing ports. Controlling for depth and site found that white abalone were significantly more abundant in areas with Laminaria farlowii (an alga) but abalone were not associated with areas high in the cover of other algae (Pelagophycus porra or Eisenia arborea) or the amount of sand in the habitat (except that abalone always occurred on rock). Within an area with abalone, the particular rock they occurred on was significantly larger than unoccupied neighboring rocks. Occupied rocks were not significantly different in algal cover or in sea urchin density than unoccupied neighboring rocks. The position of abalone on a rock was nearer to the rock-sand interface than would be expected based on a random distribution. More white abalone were feeding when in association with red urchins, perhaps because both grazers capture drift algae to eat. These data may aid future efforts to locate white abalone brood stock and identify locations for outplanting. 相似文献
