Red-Yellow soils are widely developed on terraces and hilly lands in the south-western half of Japan. They do not show any evidence of bleaching in the lower part of the A horizon, and are characterized by an extremely strong acid reaction, and a very low base-status9). There are few studies on clay mineralogy of Red-Yellow soils in Japan. Egawa et al4). have reported on clay mineralogy of soils derived from the Pleistocene and the Tertiary sediments most of which may be regarded as Red-Yellow soils. Matsui and Katô10) have described clay minerals of Red-Yellow soils derived from the Pleistocene sediment in the environs of Shinjobara, Shizuoka Prefecture. These investigations indicated that clay minerals of Red-Yellow soils derived from the Pleistocene sediments consisted mainly of kaolin minerals, whereas those of Red-Yell ow soils derived from the Tertiary sediments were of the kaolin-illite association. 相似文献

Introduction Paddy (irrigated) rice is the most important single crop in Japan. Nearly half of the total arable lands covering approximately 6.5 million hectares, are devoted to the growing of the rice plant. It is grown mainly on the alluvial plains which are intensively cultivated, and are the most productive soils of the country. Since the idea of modern pedology was introduced into Japan, some work has been done by some Japanese investigators to classify paddy soils on the basis of their morphological characteristics. A brief historical review on the soil survey work in Japan has been given by Kamoshita8). In 1936 Kawamura described methods of soil survey in Korea through a careful study of the work developed by Stremme and his colleagues in Danzig. In those days Kamoshita9),10) devised a scheme of paddy soil classification by applying the concept of the wet soil types (mineralische Nassböden) proposed by Stremme, and he established five predominant soil types as follows: Bog soils (Moorböden), Half-bog soils (anmoorige Böden), Meadow soils (Wiesenböden), Gray lowland soils (graue Auenböden), and Brown lowland soils (braune Auenböden). The names in parentheses represent the wet soil types proposed by Stremme. These soil types are subdivided into soil kinds (Bodenarten) on the basis of differences in texture, rusty mottling, and humus content. Abstract The phosphate sorption (P sor) capacity of soils increased when the soils were reduced (Willet and Higgins, Aust. J. Soil Res., 16, 319–326, 1978). The present study aimed at the elucidation of this mechanism using Na2S2O4 and 5 different soils. The P sor of the 5 soils increased with the addition of a small amount of Na2S2O4. Fe(II) was released from the soils with the addition of the same small amount of Na2S2O4. Furthermore, when the amount of FeCl2 corresponding to the amount of Fe(II) released along with the small amount of Na2S2O4 was added, the P sor of the soil increased. However, the P sor of the lowland soils, of which the hydrous Fe oxide content was lower than the others, decreased when the amount of Na2S2O4 addition was increased up to 150–200 g kg?1. Based on these results, the following process is inferred for the increase in the P sor of the soils when they are reduced. Hydrous Fe oxide in soil takes the form of very fine, high-density particles and reacts with P mainly on their surface. When a small amount of Na2S2O4 is added, the hydrous Fe oxide is partially reduced, dissolved and finally re-precipitates with P by oxidation with O2 from the air during the experiment. 相似文献

The Japanese sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus has a pelagic-lecithotrophic larva. Here, we clarify larval dispersal among Japanese sea cucumber populations by describing the levels of distinctiveness and gene flow among red and green variant populations of A. japonicus across Toyama Bay using 11 polymorphic microsatellite markers. Samples of Japanese sea cucumber populations were collected from three localities (Noto, Shinminato, and Uozu) around Toyama Bay. Geographically separated populations of red and green variants were determined to be genetically distinct, supported by phylogenetic analysis and the distinctiveness range values of pairwise multilocus estimates of F ST. Contemporary migration analyses indicated that the majority of estimated migration events occurred within A. japonicus populations comprised of only either red or green variants. In a historical gene flow analysis, two best-fit models (n-island and stepping stone models) showed circulation for the gene migration in Toyama Bay among red variant populations. Our results provide useful information on the genetic structure of Japanese sea cucumber populations and will be helpful for genetic conservation and fisheries management of sea cucumber populations in Toyama Bay. 相似文献

Sterile insect technique (SIT) is widely used to eradicate target pest species. Its effectiveness depends on the ability of released sterile males to mate with wild females. In pest species with a female choice mating system, there is potential for female preference to evolve in the wild population in view of the resulting zero-fitness in females that mate with sterile males. The evolution of female preference against sterile males can, therefore, reduce the efficiency of the SIT as the likelihood decreases that sterile males will mate with wild females. We examined this experimentally by using the solanaceous fruit fly Bactrocera latifrons, a serious pest of solanaceous crops, by allowing female preference in mass-reared fruit flies to select between fertile and sterile males over 12 generations. However, this did not generate a rapid evolutionary response. Also the remating rate of females did not increase, even when the first mating partner was a sterile male. We discuss the implication of the results for the eradication project by the SIT program. 相似文献

Fucoxanthin (Fx) is a marine carotenoid found in edible brown seaweeds. We previously reported that dietary Fx metabolite into fucoxanthinol (FxOH), attenuates the weight gain of white adipose tissue of diabetic/obese KK-Ay mice. In this study, to evaluate anti-diabetic effects of Fx, we investigated improving the effect of insulin resistance on the diabetic model of KK-Ay mice. Furthermore, preventing the effect of FxOH on low-grade chronic inflammation related to oxidative stress was evaluated on 3T3-L1 adipocyte cells and a RAW264.7 macrophage cell co-culture system. A diet containing 0.1% Fx was fed to diabetic model KK-Ay mice for three weeks, then glucose tolerance was observed. Fx diet significantly improved glucose tolerance compared with the control diet group. In in vitro studies, FxOH showed suppressed tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) mRNA expression and protein levels in a co-culture of adipocyte and macrophage cells. These findings suggest that Fx ameliorates glucose tolerance in the diabetic model mice. Furthermore, FxOH, a metabolite of Fx, suppresses low-grade chronic inflammation in adipocyte cells. 相似文献
