Environmental influences on histological changes in the reproductive cycle of four New South Wales sea urchins

The suitability of a sea urchin population for commercial harvesting and culturing depends on the timing and duration of the spawning season. Pilot studies have shown that the New South Wales echinoids produce mature gonads for several months.Investigations were made into the influence of those exogenous factors which could be modified under aquacultural conditions.Temperature and food appeared to affect gonad (roe) development, while depth and density did not. The relationship between macro and micro changes in the gonads was established and methods of estimating stages of gametogensis were compared.  相似文献

Muscle cells that conitract spontaneously and rhythmically can be obtained from adult mouse myocardium. Contractions are observed immediately after homogenization in a solution that is ionically similar to intracellular fluid. Contraction frequency varies directly with temperature and decreases as a function of time after homogenization. At 16 degrees C rhythmic relaxation and contraction occur for about 20 minutes. Contractions are dependent on the presence of adenosine triphosphate in the homogenization medium.  相似文献

Two lymphocytoid cell lines have been established from a patient with the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. The cells are deficient in hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase, as demonstrated by their failure to incorporate [H(3)]hypoxanthine and by their inability to grow in medium in which they were nutritionally dependent upon exogenous hypoxanthine. This represents the first establishment of presumptively permanent human lymphocytoid cell lines that are deficient in a specific enzyme.  相似文献

The prefrontal cortex is a higher brain region that regulates thought, behavior, and emotion using representational knowledge, operations often referred to as working memory. We tested the influence of protein kinase C (PKC) intracellular signaling on prefrontal cortical cognitive function and showed that high levels of PKC activity in prefrontal cortex, as seen for example during stress exposure, markedly impair behavioral and electrophysiological measures of working memory. These data suggest that excessive PKC activation can disrupt prefrontal cortical regulation of behavior and thought, possibly contributing to signs of prefrontal cortical dysfunction such as distractibility, impaired judgment, impulsivity, and thought disorder.  相似文献   

Submergence of the Connecticut Coast

Radiocarbon-dated samples show that the Connecticut coast has submerged about 9 feet in the last 3000 years and about 33 feet in the last 7000 years. The rate of submergence is similar to rates reported from other coasts. The finding strengthens the hypothesis that a worldwide postglacial rise of sea level is the cause.  相似文献

A specific immunofluorescent histochemical method for cyclic adenosine monophosphate was used to study rat cerebellum. After topical treatment with norepinephrine or stimulation of norepinephrine-containing afferents from locus coeruleus, there was a striking increase in the number of Purkinje cells with strong cyclic adenosine monophosphate reactivity. Other putative inhibitory transmitters had no significant effect on staining of Purkinje cells. The results provide the first histochemical support for the hypothesis that cyclic adenosine monophosphate can be generated postsynaptically in central neurons in response to noradrenergic stimuli.  相似文献
