Occurrence of cutaneous infections of Myxobolus episquamalis (Myxozoa: Myxobolidae) in sea mullet, Mugil cephalus L, in Australia

Objective To report the occurrence of Myxobolus episquamalis in sea mullet, Mugil cephalus L , caught in estuaries in eastern and western Australia.
Design A prospective study of commercial catches of mullet in the Clarence River of NSW and individual cases from other areas.
Results The organism caused pale, white to pink, raised lesions on the scales and fins of sea mullet. Occurrence of infection was highest in spring and in a marine (down-river) environment compared to a brackish environment. Up to 6% of fish were affected in commercial catches.
Conclusion The infection is widespread in Australian mullet, but rarely causes significant economic loss.  相似文献   

Detection and quantification of cocaine metabolites in urine samples from horses administered cocaine

Cocaine is a naturally occurring alkaloid that is commonly abused by human-beings for its psychostimulatory effects. Occasionally, very small concentrations (i.e. <100 ng/mL) of the primary cocaine metabolite, benzoylecgonine (BZE) have been detected in urine collected from horses competing in athletic events. In this study urine samples, collected from four horses following the administration of 2.5 and 20 mg of cocaine sublingually and 50 mg of cocaine intravenously, were analyzed for the presence of cocaine and/or its metabolites by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results of ELISA analysis of urine samples collected from all four horses suggested the presence of cocaine and/or its metabolites up to 10, 48, and 72 h after administration of 2.5, 20, and 50 mg of cocaine, respectively. The results of GC-MS analysis confirmed the presence of BZE above the limit of quantification (LOQ = 5 ng/mL) in urine samples collected from all four horses for up to 24 h after administration of 2.5 mg of cocaine and for up to 48 h after administration of 20 and 50 mg of cocaine. No obvious behavioral effects or overt alterations of heart rate or rhythm were noted in any of these horses after cocaine administration.  相似文献   

Distribution of lesions in ovine salmonellosis

SUMMARY Four forms of salmonellosis were recognised in feedlots and during transport by sea: septicaemic, and acute, subacute and chronic enteric. The severity and distribution of lesions in the enteric forms varied according to the progression of the pathological process. The acute disease involved the abomasum and small intestine whereas the subacute disease centred on the lower small intestine and upper large intestine. Chronic disease involved considerable mucosal repair in the ileum, caecum and proximal colon. Septicaemic salmoneiiosis was often accompanied by acute enteritis and occasionally by cholecystitis. S typhimurium was the most frequently encountered serotype.  相似文献   

Distal tibial fractures in dogs and cats

A total of 43 fractures of the distal tibia in dogs and cats were evaluated for fracture patterns, methods of stabilization, and time to bone union. Fractures of the metaphysis (9.3%), physis (30.9%), epiphysis (2.3%), and malleoli (58.2%) were classified. Open reduction and internal fixation, with combinations of Kirschner wire, orthopedic wire, and bone screws, were the methods of fixation used in the majority of fractures. These relatively simple methods of fixation were applied to all sizes of dogs and cats and resulted in an average bone healing time of 6 weeks.  相似文献

Modelling the impacts of group ranch subdivision on agro-pastoral households in Kajiado,Kenya

Pastoral communities in East Africa are facing considerable challenges arising from shifts in land tenure policy from communal to individual landholdings and high human population growth rates. Over the last 30 years, livestock-to-human ratios have generally declined to levels that will no longer support pure pastoralism. Many Maasai have thus diversified into cultivation, wage labour, and small businesses. Livelihood expectations are rising, with concomitant increases in the need for cash. We describe the modification of PHEWS, a simple rule-based model that tracks cash flow and calories in agro-pastoral households. We use it, coupled to Savanna, a sophisticated ecosystem model, to quantify some of the effects of subdivision and land fragmentation on household livestock numbers and on food security. For the group ranches simulated, model outputs indicate that subdivision results in substantial reductions in livestock numbers, partially because households have to sell more animals to generate the cash needed, with serious long-term consequences on herd sizes and food security. If subdivision occurs, even to parcels as large as 196 km², livelihood strategies may need to be modified to maintain current levels of household well-being. Model results have been discussed in community meetings in southern Kajiado, but more work is needed on communication mechanisms to utilise more effectively the results of imperfect but useful integrated assessments of complex problems concerning land use and human well-being.  相似文献

Nucleation of branched actin filaments by the Arp2/3 complex is a conserved process in eukaryotic cells, yet the source of unbranched actin filaments has remained obscure. In yeast, formins stimulate assembly of actin cables independently of Arp2/3. Here, the conserved core of formin homology domains 1 and 2 of Bni1p (Bni1pFH1FH2) was found to nucleate unbranched actin filaments in vitro. Bni1pFH2 provided the minimal region sufficient for nucleation. Unique among actin nucleators, Bni1pFH1FH2 remained associated with the growing barbed ends of filaments. This combination of properties suggests a direct role for formins in regulating nucleation and polarization of unbranched filamentous actin structures.  相似文献

The myb gene is the transforming oncogene of the avian myeloblastosis virus (AMV); its normal cellular homolog, c-myb, is conserved across a broad span of evolution. In humans, c-myb is expressed in malignant hematopoietic cell lines and in primary hematopoietic tumors. Partial complementary DNA clones were generated from blast cells of patients with acute myelogenous leukemia. The sequences of the clones were compared to the c-myb of other species, as well as the v-myb of AMV. In addition, the carboxyl terminal region of human c-myb was placed in an expression vector to obtain protein for the generation of antiserum, which was used to identify the human c-myb gene product. Like v-myb, this protein was found within the nucleus of leukemic cells where it was associated with the nuclear matrix. These studies provide further evidence that c-myb might be involved in human leukemia.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to isolate and characterize the gene and gene product of a human hematopoietic colony-stimulating factor with pluripotent biological activities. This factor has the ability to induce differentiation of a murine myelomonocytic leukemia cell line WEHI-3B(D+) and cells from patients with newly diagnosed acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL). A complementary DNA copy of the gene encoding a pluripotent human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (hG-CSF) was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant form of hG-CSF is capable of supporting neutrophil proliferation in a CFU-GM assay. In addition, recombinant hG-CSF can support early erythroid colonies and mixed colony formation. Competitive binding studies done with 125I-labeled hG-CSF and cell samples from two patients with newly diagnosed human leukemias as well as WEHI-3B(D+) cells showed that one of the human leukemias (ANLL, classified as M4) and the WEHI-3B(D+) cells have receptors for hG-CSF. Furthermore, the murine WEHI-3B(D+) cells and human leukemic cells classified as M2, M3, and M4 were induced by recombinant hG-CSF to undergo terminal differentiation to macrophages and granulocytes. The secreted form of the protein produced by the bladder carcinoma cell line 5637 was found to be O-glycosylated and to have a molecular weight of 19,600.  相似文献
