A two-channel ultraviolet photometer aboard Pioneer 10 has made several observations of the ultraviolet glow in the wavelength range from 170 to 1400 angstroms in the vicinity of Jupiter. Preliminary results indicate a Jovian hydrogen (1216 angstrom) glow with a brightness of about 1000 rayleighs and a helium (584 angstrom) glow with a brightness of about 10 to 20 rayleighs. In addition, Jupiter appears to have an extensive hydrogen torus surrounding it in the orbital plane of Io. The mean diameter of the torus is about equal to the diameter of the orbit of Io. Several observations of the Galilean satellites have also occurred but only a rather striking Io observation has been analyzed to date. If the observed Io glow is predominantly that of Lyman-alpha, the surface brightness is about 10,000 rayleighs. 相似文献

Endonuclease restriction (Hind III) fragments of DNA from Chinese hamster X mouse somatic cell hybrids hybridized with proline-rich protein complementary DNA clones only when the DNA was isolated from cells containing mouse chromosome 8, or a fragment of chromosome 8. We used molecular markers to study genetic relationships in a diverse collection of 85 domestic dog breeds. Differences among breeds accounted for approximately 30% of genetic variation. Microsatellite genotypes were used to correctly assign 99% of individual dogs to breeds. Phylogenetic analysis separated several breeds with ancient origins from the remaining breeds with modern European origins. We identified four genetic clusters, which predominantly contained breeds with similar geographic origin, morphology, or role in human activities. These results provide a genetic classification of dog breeds and will aid studies of the genetics of phenotypic breed differences. 相似文献

Magnetospheric substorms explosively release solar wind energy previously stored in Earth's magnetotail, encompassing the entire magnetosphere and producing spectacular auroral displays. It has been unclear whether a substorm is triggered by a disruption of the electrical current flowing across the near-Earth magnetotail, at approximately 10 R(E) (R(E): Earth radius, or 6374 kilometers), or by the process of magnetic reconnection typically seen farther out in the magnetotail, at approximately 20 to 30 R(E). We report on simultaneous measurements in the magnetotail at multiple distances, at the time of substorm onset. Reconnection was observed at 20 R(E), at least 1.5 minutes before auroral intensification, at least 2 minutes before substorm expansion, and about 3 minutes before near-Earth current disruption. These results demonstrate that substorms are likely initiated by tail reconnection. 相似文献

A collaborative study was conducted in 18 laboratories to assess the performance of the hydrophobic grid membrane filter method against that of the AOAC official first action method 46.013-46.016 for enumerating total and fecal coliforms and Escherichia coli. The study was carried out on frozen breaded fish, raw comminuted poultry, unroasted walnut pieces, ground black pepper, and cheddar cheese. The hydrophobic grid membrane filter method recovered significantly larger numbers of target bacteria in 7 of the food/analysis combinations: fecal coliforms in fish; E. coli in poultry; fecal coliforms and E. coli in walnuts; and total coliforms, fecal coliforms and E. coli in black pepper. Random error (Sr2) associated with the hydrophobic grid membrane filter method was significantly lower than that of the reference method in over 30% of the paired sample series. A detailed procedure for isolated microspore culture of barley is presented along with examples of response across genotypes.
Over 30 genotypes, including winter and spring growth habit and 2-row and 6-row genotypes, have shown an essentially genotype
independent response, averaging about 10,000 embryos per 5 cm petri culture plate. The regeneration frequency, checked on
samples of 500 embryos per plate ranged from 36 to 97% with most genotypes being in the range of 70 to 90%. About 70 to 80%
of the plants regenerated have been completely fertile doubled haploids, thus eliminating the need to double the chromosome
number of plants. Many little details are critical to success of the microspore procedure and while it saves much time compared
to anther culture, greater attention to details and cleanliness is essential.
