A series of 25 horses with olecranon fractures are reviewed. Twenty-one cases were treated surgically by the application of a tension band plate to the caudal aspect of the ulna. Seventy six per cent of these regained full limb function. The results of treatment are compared with two other series of conservatively and surgically treated cases.  相似文献

The clinical signs and radiographic appearance of 19 cases of fracture of the accessory carpal bone of horses are described. In 17 cases the fractures were in the frontal plane and occurred palmar to the groove on the lateral aspect of the bone. In six cases radiographs taken six months to three years after the fracture occurred showed no evidence of bony union; nevertheless, these and five other horses for which follow-up information was available for up to seven years all became sound, and seven of them returned to competitive activity.  相似文献

Current trends in bovine fracture repair are reviewed with reference to 59 cases. Thirty-one cases were managed surgically, 14 by external fixation, and six by stall confinement. Eight animals were slaughtered without treatment being attempted. A successful outcome was achieved in 90 per cent of the surgically treated cases, compared with 57 per cent for those treated by external fixation methods.  相似文献

Rice-milk and rice-toasted mung bean diets, and a high-protein rice (IR58 milled rice) were evaluated as part of a study on the protein requirements of toddlers consuming rice-based diets following the multilevel N balance method. Milk or mung bean contributed 1/3 of dietary N. At a daily energy intake of 418 kJ/kg body weight, weight losses were observed for all diets. The safe level of protein intakes obtained allowing 10 mg N/kg body weight/day for miscellaneous integumental losses and 15 mg N/kg body weight/day for growth was 1.11 g/kg body weight/day for the rice-milk diet and 1.34 g for the rice-mung bean diet. Preliminary data on four children indicate a safe level of protein intake of 1.44 g/kg/day for the IR58 milled rice. The protein quality of the high-protein rice as determined by the very short term N balance index on three children was 79–80% relative to milk.  相似文献

Extracellular polysaccharides (EPSs) likely provide phytopathogenic bacteria a selective advantage both inside and outside plants. Despite the relatively scant knowledge about EPS biosynthesis in phytopathogenic bacteria, it clearly is a well controlled, complex, energy-intensive process. Unexpectedly, three phytopathogenic bacteria have been found to autoregulate EPS production in response to extracellular signal compounds (pheromones) that they produce. Like many bacteria, Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii produces a N-acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) autoinducer. However, unlike most AHL-dependent autoinduction systems, that in P. stewartii subsp. stewartii somehow represses EPS production in the absence of autoinducer. Instead of an AHL-dependent system (which it also has), Ralstonia solanacearum uses a novel autoregulator identified as 3-hydroxypalmitic acid methyl ester to regulate EPS biosynthesis. A lack of this autoregulator in R. solanacearum results in repression of EPS biosynthesis by a complex two-component sensor/response regulator signal cascade. Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris has two partially overlapping autoregulatory systems. The autoregulators are incompletely characterized, but one diffusible signal factor (DSF) is thought to be a fatty acid derivative and the other diffusible factor (DF) may be a butyrolactone. The autoregulation pathways in X. campestris pv. campestris are essentially unknown, but EPS production is controlled by both the DSF and DF systems, whereas production of extracellular enzymes and pigment production are regulated independently. In a confined micro-environment, population density and intercellular concentrations of an autoregulator will increase in parallel, so autoregulation is one way that bacteria can coordinate gene expression to synthesize EPS only at high cell density. However, because there is often limited evidence that it is actually cell density that is being detected, researchers should not assume a priori that autoregulation must function for quorum sensing. Some possible reasons for why phytopathogenic bacteria would benefit from delaying EPS production are discussed.  相似文献
