Inflammatory processes induced by viral or bacterial infections are believed to be one of the major pathogenetic mechanisms in myocardial diseases. Although the reason for progression to myocardial failure is not fully understood, postulated mechanisms include persistent viral infection alone or in combination with autoimmune processes. A variety of cardiotropic viruses have been identified to elicit myocarditis, with enteroviruses and adenoviruses as the most frequent causative agents in children and adolescents. However, parvovirus B19 (PVB19) has recently emerged as another potential pathogen in adult patients associated with inflammatory heart disease. Many dimensions of inflammatory heart disease coexist while different phases of the disease progress simultaneously: phase 1 is dominated by viral infection, phase 2 by the onset of (probably) multiple autoimmune reactions, and phase 3 by the progression to cardiac dilatation without the role of an infectious agent and cardiac inflammation. Taking these mechanisms into account, screening for viral and bacterial genome by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and detection of inflammatory infiltrates by immunohistochemistry are considered crucial for establishing an aetiological diagnosis, thereby allowing initiation of specific therapeutic strategies. In a large cohort of 3345 consecutive patients with left ventricular dysfunction evaluated over a period of 10 years, prevalence of PVB19, coxsackievirus (CVB), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), influenza A virus and adenovirus (ADV) genome was assessed by PCR. Inflammatory infiltrates within the myocardium were detected by immunohistochemistry according to the WHF criteria and by histopathology according to the Dallas criteria of myocarditis. For control, endomyocardial samples of patients with arterial hypertension were studied. Parvovirus B19 was the most often detected virus in all patient subgroups, with positivity ranging from 17% to 33%. Except for PVB19, CVB RNA (3%), ADV (2%) and CMV (3.9%) were the most frequently detected viral genomes. Interestingly, detection of PVB19 genome was significantly correlated with inflammatory heart disease and reduced ejection fraction. Importantly, an aetiological diagnosis requires the immunohistochemical and molecular biological investigation of endomyocardial biopsies. Such an approach may change the management of these diseases in the future. Pine decline poses a serious threat to forest sustainability in the south‐eastern United States. Complex interactions between biotic and abiotic factors are involved in the decline and include root‐feeding bark beetles and their associated fungal genera, Leptographium and Grosmannia. A study was conducted to determine the relative tolerance of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) families when challenged with either Leptographium or Grosmannia species. In the first study, bare root seedlings from 23 loblolly pine families were screened with L. procerum, L. terebrantis, G. huntii and G. alacris using an artificial inoculation method. In a second study, containerized seedlings from 27 loblolly pine families were screened with G. huntii and L. terebrantis. Measured seedling responses to the inoculations included lesion length, lesion width and occlusion of vascular tissues, measured 8 weeks after inoculations. The most common host response was dark brown lesions and resinous occluded stem tissue. Seedling families had a wide range of host responses to the different Leptographium and Grosmannia species and showed that it could be possible to select the families that may be tolerant to Leptographium and Grosmannia fungal species based on these results. 相似文献

The Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) project estimates the frequencies, amplitudes, and linewidths of more than 250,000 acoustic resonances of the sun from data sets lasting 36 days. The frequency resolution of a single data set is 0.321 microhertz. For frequencies averaged over the azimuthal order m, the median formal error is 0.044 microhertz, and the associated median fractional error is 1.6 x 10(-5). For a 3-year data set, the fractional error is expected to be 3 x 10(-6). The GONG m-averaged frequency measurements differ from other helioseismic data sets by 0.03 to 0.08 microhertz. Transition to turbulence in pipe flow is one of the most fundamental and longest-standing problems in fluid dynamics. Stability theory suggests that the flow remains laminar for all flow rates, but in practice pipe flow becomes turbulent even at moderate speeds. This transition drastically affects the transport efficiency of mass, momentum, and heat. On the basis of the recent discovery of unstable traveling waves in computational studies of the Navier-Stokes equations and ideas from dynamical systems theory, a model for the transition process has been suggested. We report experimental observation of these traveling waves in pipe flow, confirming the proposed transition scenario and suggesting that the dynamics associated with these unstable states may indeed capture the nature of fluid turbulence. 相似文献

Doppler velocity observations obtained by the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) instruments directly measure the nearly steady flows in the solar photosphere. The sun's differential rotation is accurately determined from single observations. The rotation profile with respect to latitude agrees well with previous measures, but it also shows a slight north-south asymmetry. Rotation profiles averaged over 27-day rotations of the sun reveal the torsional oscillation signal-weak, jetlike features, with amplitudes of 5 meters per second, that are associated with the sunspot latitude activity belts. A meridional circulation with a poleward flow of about 20 meters per second is also evident. Several characteristics of the surface flows suggest the presence of large convection cells. 相似文献

The electrical properties of individual bundles, or "ropes," of single-walled carbon nanotubes have been measured. Below about 10 kelvin, the low-bias conductance was suppressed for voltages less than a few millivolts. In addition, dramatic peaks were observed in the conductance as a function of a gate voltage that modulated the number of electrons in the rope. These results are interpreted in terms of single-electron charging and resonant tunneling through the quantized energy levels of the nanotubes composing the rope. 相似文献
