OBJECTIVE: To evaluate correlations between plasma concentrations of norepinephrine and Doppler echocardiographic variables for dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) or dilatative cardiomyopathy (DCM) to better understand the time course and magnitude of sympathetic activation in dogs with heart failure (HF). ANIMALS: 15 healthy dogs, 15 dogs with DMVD, and 15 dogs with DCM. PROCEDURES: Dogs were positioned in lateral recumbency with minimal restraint for at least 20 minutes. Plasma samples were obtained and assayed by use of high-performance liquid chromatography. Concentrations were correlated with HF classification and with the main Doppler echocardiographic variables for each group. RESULTS: Mean +/- SD norepinephrine concentration was significantly higher in dogs with DMVD (494.4 +/- 204.8 pg/mL) or DCM (655.7 +/- 652.5 pg/mL) than in healthy dogs (205.8 +/- 78.9 pg/mL), but concentrations did not differ significantly between the 2 groups with HF. Correlations were not detected between norepinephrine and heart rate or any M-mode echocardiographic variables evaluated, except for fractional shortening (FS) in DCM dogs. In that group, norepinephrine was inversely correlated with FS values. In DMVD dogs, no significant correlation was found between norepinephrine and the left atrium-to-aortic root ratio or mitral regurgitation. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A proportional inverse correlation exists between norepinephrine and FS values in dogs with DCM. However, norepinephrine concentration was not correlated with the evaluated echocardiographic variables in dogs with DMVD. Sympathetic antagonists should be evaluated as a treatment option because of the increased plasma concentrations of norepinephrine detected in dogs with HF.  相似文献

Recent plant diversity changes on Europe's mountain summits   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In mountainous regions, climate warming is expected to shift species' ranges to higher altitudes. Evidence for such shifts is still mostly from revisitations of historical sites. We present recent (2001 to 2008) changes in vascular plant species richness observed in a standardized monitoring network across Europe's major mountain ranges. Species have moved upslope on average. However, these shifts had opposite effects on the summit floras' species richness in boreal-temperate mountain regions (+3.9 species on average) and Mediterranean mountain regions (-1.4 species), probably because recent climatic trends have decreased the availability of water in the European south. Because Mediterranean mountains are particularly rich in endemic species, a continuation of these trends might shrink the European mountain flora, despite an average increase in summit species richness across the region.  相似文献

Melanodermas and leukodermas are conditions involving skin pigment changes. Vitiligo, an acquired leukoderma, is an uncommon canine and feline skin disorder, with a likely autoimmune pathogenesis. It is seen more frequently in young adult purebred animals and has no apparent sex predisposition. In Brazil the first report of vitiligo was in 1986. In a 16‐year period, 12 cases of vitiligo, including 11 dogs (six Rottweilers, two Doberman pinschers, one great dane, one boxer, and one mongrel dog) and one cat (Siamese), were diagnosed at our hospital. Diagnosis was based on history, physical examination, Wood´s lamp examination, and histopathologic evaluation (H&E and Masson‐Fontana stains). Among the dogs, seven were male with a mean age of 34.5 months. The clinical evolution was known in five patients. Skin lesions included leukotrichia (100%) and leukoderma of the nose (100%), buccal mucosa (66.5%), lips (85.7%), and footpads (8.5%). Leukonychia was rarely seen. The only lesion in the cat was depigmented footpads. Funding: Self‐funded.  相似文献

Forest soils from field plots, subjected to long-term acidification by H2SO4 treatment, or to liming, were examined for the effects of treatment on net mineralization and turnover rates of carbon and nitrogen during incubation. The total soil respiration was decreased as a result of acidification, whereas the proportion of labeled C, introduced as 14C-glucose at start of the incubation, was increased in the CO2 pool emitted. The accumulation of mineral N (ammonium) was not significantly influenced by acidification, whereas the rate of microbial N turnover, obtained from 15N-dilution data for the exchangeable NH4+ fraction, was markedly decreased.  相似文献

Eighty-five animals were used to develop an embryo transfer programme including a study on how oestrus synchronization influenced the ovulation rate. The animals, both ewes and ewe lambs, were divided into three groups: donors, recipients and controls. Oestrus was synchronized in donors and recipients by the use of progesterone-impregnated vaginal pessaries. The donors also received one injection of 600 IU PMSG. Samples for microbiological investigation of the vaginal flora were taken in connection with synchronization. The ovulation rate was determined by laparoscopy in the control animals and by laparotomy in the donors and recipients. The embryos were surgically recovered from the donors by flushing of the uterine horns seven days after pessary removal. The embryos were classified according to developmental stage and quality. At transfer each recipient received 2–4 embryos (moruhs or blastocysts) by a surgical method. A ± 1 day asynchrony in oestrus between donors and recipients was tolerated. All synchronized animals came into oestrus within 2.5 days after pessary removal. The interval was shorter if the animals had been injected with PMSG. The largest number of ovulations occuwed in the synchronized and PMSG-treated animals (mean 4.5 ± 2.1). Synchronized animals that did not receive PMSG had almost the same ovulation rate as the control animals (2.6 ± 0.9 versus 2.5 ± 0.7). The pessary treatment influenced the bacterial flora of the vagina. The number of ewes with bacterial growth in the vagina increased. The number of isolated organisms also increased. The embryo recovery rate was 80.8% and 3.7 ± 2.7 ovas was recovered on average. Eighty-eight percent of all donors yielded transferable embryos. Morulas and blastocysts comprised 84.4% of the recovered oocytes/embryos. Only 5.2% of these were of poor quality. Of the transferred embryos, 65.1% developed into lambs and 91.3% of the recipients lambed. The ewe lambs were as suitable as donors and recipients as the older ewes.  相似文献

Dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease) is a parasitic disease which is endemic in 18 African and two Asian countries. It has a marked potential for eradication by a combination of water supply management, health education and controlled medical intervention. While data on the disease are, in many cases, both in short supply and unreliable, increasingly the tools of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) are becoming important components of the eradication effort. In particular, remotely sensed data from LANDSAT have allowed the identification and location of remote and small settlements in dracunculiasis-endemic areas. When coupled with additional information available in remotely sensed data from LANDSAT, and when used in conjunction with a GIS containing digitized maps and field data collected from hand-held global positioning system receivers, the eradication effort has developed an epidemiological tool of potential power. While at first this system is finding uses in managing existing data in a unified inventory, the system shows potential for use as an effective management decision-making tool as the control effort moves from disease reduction to disease eradication. This paper will use a single province within one country, the Zou Province of Benin, to demonstrate the varied data sources involved in the system, the software and hardware components of the system, and to discuss the specific problems involved in using the system in the field. Of particular consideration, and of potential use to other similar programs, is a consideration of the management and implementation of the system. The paper concludes that a combination of remote sensing and GIS technologies offers the epidemiologist a new and important means by which to effectively implement solutions to public health management problems.  相似文献

A method for in vitro production of antibodies to bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV) by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was developed. The PBMC were cultured in microtitre plates coated with detergent-solubilized BVDV and the supernatants were tested in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay which detects IgG antibodies to BVDV. Following incubation of PBMC with an optimal concentration of pokeweed mitogen for 5 days, antibodies to BVDV were detected in culture supernatants of PBMC from immune cattle, but not in supernatants of PBMC from seronegative cattle, from persistently BVDV-infected cattle or from a 5-day-old calf that received BVDV antibodies via colostrum. This antibody-production assay may therefore be used as a tool to discriminate between passively acquired antibodies and those actively induced.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the surface epithelia from the uterotubal junction (UTJ), and the adjacent tubal isthmic and endometrial regions, was studied in preovulatory oestrus gilts, either unmated or inseminated 12 h before with fresh boar semen. The simple columnar epithelium of the UTJ consisted of non-ciliated (secretory) and ciliated cells. Secretory vesicles occurred in the secretory cells, especially in inseminated gilts. Lymphocytes, monocytes and macrophages were found dispersed basally among the epithelial cells. Phagocytosis of epithelial cells undergoing apoptosis was seen throughout the UTJ at oestrus, increasing after insemination. Neutrophilic granulocytes were found in the lamina propria of the uterine component of the UTJ, but only occasionally in the epithelium. After insemination, neutrophils invaded the uterine epithelium, to actively participate in intraepithelial phagocytosis or move into the lumen, engulfing spermatozoa. Neutrophils were absent from the UTJ proper and the isthmic epithelium, irrespective of the presence of spermatozoa in the lumen. Those spermatozoa in the uterine lumen that escaped phagocytosis had severely damaged plasma membranes, whereas those in the UTJ proper--concentrated towards the deep furrows of the diverticulae--mostly showed normal sperm ultrastructure.  相似文献
