A thorough review of the existing Western language equine acupuncture literature was conducted and studies selected based on the existence of objective criteria for evaluation. When the most rigorously designed studies were evaluated, the results do not support the contention that acupuncture has clinically relevant effects. The purpose of this report is to describe the clinical, imaging and pathological findings in a Quarter Horse colt admitted to the Texas A&M University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for lameness of the left forelimb and left hindlimb. A presumptive diagnosis of left forelimb septic navicular bursitis was made ultrasonographically. A cyst‐like lesion of the calcaneus was diagnosed radiographically and better characterised with computed tomography. The cyst‐like lesion of the calcaneus was caused by infection with Actinobacillus sp. and extended into the adjacent tarsocrural, proximal intertarsal and talocalcaneal joints causing septic arthritis. The owner elected for euthanasia due to the poor prognosis. The diagnoses were confirmed on histopathology.  相似文献

One million to two million years ago, most of today's large, predatory mammals coexisted with larger extinct species, such as saber-toothed cats and giant running bears. Comparisons of tooth fracture frequencies from modern and Pleistocene carnivores imply that predator-prey dynamics and interspecific interactions must have been substantially different 36,000 to 10,000 years ago. Tooth fracture frequencies of four Rancho La Brea species-dire wolf, coyote, saber-toothed cat, and American lion-were about three times that of extant carnivores. Consequently, these findings suggest that these species utilized carcasses more fully and likely competed more intensely for food than presentday large carnivores.  相似文献

The identification of lactic acid bacteria in a complex microbiota using bacteriological culture in combination with phenotypic and genotypic identification techniques is laborious and time-consuming. New molecular methods permit a fast and culture-independent characterisation of such microbiota. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of PCR fragments of the 16S rRNA gene has been proven to be a suitable tool. Here the use of PCR-DGGE with group specific primers is described to investigate the dynamic of sourdough microbiota from addition of the starter until the microbiota remained stable. Species were identified by applying an identification ladder obtained from reference strains or by sequence analysis of the PCR fragments. Furthermore, a method for detection of strains in complex microbiota is described. A strain specific chromosomal DNA fragment of Lactobacillus paracasei LTH 2579 was isolated applying the subtraction hybridisation. Based on the acquired target sequence a specific PCR system was established and combined with a PCR system specific for the species L. paracasei. Use of this detection system permitted to identify and quantitatively detect L. paracasei LTH 2579 in fermented sausages and upon consumption in faecal samples.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Getreide gehört zu den Grundnahrungsmitteln. Kontamination mit Schadstoffen aus der Umwelt kann daher wegen des regelmäßigen Verzehrs von Getreideprodukten zu gesundheitlichen Schädigungen führen. Es ist daher wichtig, zu wissen, mit welchen Stoffen bei der Kontamination von Getreide gerechnet werden muß und in welcher Menge sie auf Getreide und in den daraus hergestellten Erzeugnissen gefunden werden.Zu den belastenden Stoffen gehören Radionuklide, die vor allem in den Jahren der großen Kernwaffentestreihen auftraten, Pflanzenschutz- und Schädlingsbekämpfungsmittel sowie Schadstoffe, wie polycyclische Kohlenwasserstoffe und Schwermetalle, die aus Industrie- und Kraftfahrzeugabgasen auf das Getreide gelangen können. Ihre Verteilung im Korn während der Lagerung sowie Möglichkeiten, sie auf technologischem Wege zu vermindern, werden diskutiert.

Contamination of cereals and their products

Cereals are basic foostuff. Contamination by chemicals from the environment can be injurious on health of human beings. Therefore it is necessary to know, what types of compounds, and in which quantities, can be found in cereals or cereal products.To the dangerous compounds contaminating cereals belong radionuclids, which set down on plants by radioactive fall out. Furthermore the dangerous compounds involve polycyclic carbohydrates and heavy metals, which occur in cereals as pollution of automobiles and industry exhausts.The distribution of these compounds in grain during storage as well as the possibility of reducing them, are discussed.

Herbicides and fungicides inhibit Ca²⁺ uptake by plant mitochondria: A possible mechanism of action

The herbicides trifluralin, oryzalin, ioxynil, dichlofopmethyl, and dinoseb, and the fungicides chloraniformethan and dichlofluanid inhibited energy-dependent Ca²⁺ uptake in plant mitochondria at concentrations where they did not inhibit ADP phosphorylation and did not interfere with tubulin polymerization. We suggest as a common mechanism of action for these pesticides the inhibition of the regulation of cytoplasmic free Ca²⁺ concentration which may in turn lead to many physiological malfunctions.  相似文献
